**Author Peek** Interview with T. Strange

**AUTHOR PEEK** Interview with T. STRANGE

INTRODUCING…T. Strange.

Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a full-time writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share to introduce yourself.

Hi! I’m T. and I’m Canadian. That sounds like a confession or something…anyway, I’m originally from British Columbia, but now I live in a little house on the prairies. My house is purple (which is my favourite colour) and black so it looks more than a little witchy! Which suits my wife and I just fine, as we’re more than a little witchy. We have lots of animals—guinea pigs, rats, salamanders, cats, finches, a snake, and a horse.

1. How did you get started writing?

I didn’t want to learn to read or write. I tend to pick up most skills quite quickly, and I get frustrated by ones that take longer to learn…but as soon as I could write, I was unstoppable! My best friend and I spent many, many hours writing stories about ourselves as unicorns.

2. What genre(s) do you write in and why?

I write M/M romance, both BDSM and vanilla. My first two published works were both BDSM. I’ve been into BDSM literally as long as I can remember (the above friend and I were unwittingly into ponyplay!) and I consider kink a large part of who I am and of my relationship with my wife, so it’s natural that it would be something I write about. As for why M/M…it’s the first fanfiction I started reading, which carried into the fanfiction I wrote. It’s what works for me and what I find most natural to write.

3. What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?

I don’t have a car…but I do have a horse! When I’m on my horse, I mostly think, “OMG I’m on my own horse!!!!

4. What is your favorite part of writing?

The first initial burst, when I’ve just had an idea for a story and the words just don’t stop coming until I’m a panting mess with sore fingers.

5. What is your least favorite part of writing ?

Editing. I know it’s good to be your own harshest critic, but I pendulum between “This is the best thing I’ve ever read!!!” and “This is terrible no one should ever read it!” and it’s exhausting.

6. Pick two celebrities to be your parents. Who would they be and why?

Parent #1 is an easy choice: Mark Hadlow. He is seriously the world’s biggest sweetheart. I had the pleasure of meeting him at the Calgary Expo this year, and he’s even sweeter in person than he seemed to be from interviews. Parent #2 I think I’ll go with Graham McTavish, because Mark is already sort of in a relationship with his legs, and Graham seems really nice and snuggly. I haven’t gotten a chance to meet him yet, but I hope to in the future!

7. Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

That is a secret so…secret…that not even I know. I’m happy to just sit back and let them arrive.

8. Tell me about your ideal reader .

Ummm…someone who enjoys what I write, the stories I have to tell. Of course I’m not going to say no to being paid to have someone read what I’ve written, but I didn’t start out writing for money, and that’s not the ultimate reward for me. Having someone really ‘get’ a story is so special to me.

9. What is your “go to” routine that helps you get in the mood to write? Special beverage? Music? Etc.

I don’t really have a writing routine—I usually wait until the mood strikes, but I highly recommend OmmWriter. It’s a distraction-free word processor, and it’s so effective that I call it my word vacuum! I have more of a ritual when I’m writing by hand, but that’s only if I have the urge strike when I have my ideal things at hand. I have a special writing notebook and I only write on the right hand page, leaving the left for notes (except when I forget and I just keep writing), and I have a Halloween pencil that I prefer to write with.

10. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?

Boy howdy will I! Unless I manage to get my ass in gear and get something else finished, my next book (first novel/print book) will be released April 2015 by Torquere Press. It’s called My Zombie Boyfriend, and it’s an M/M paranormal borderline-urban-fantasy romance that I recently found out is classified as NA (new adult).

It’s about Edward, your typical medical student/necromancer; Kit, the body he found in a park and reanimated; and Boo, Edward’s undead cat and the first zombie he ever raised. At the age of four. And a half.

Everything you want to know about MZB (that I’m willing to disclose this early) can be found here: http://tqstrange.blogspot.ca/p/my-zombie-boyfriend.html

There’s more information about the novel, excerpts, and rubber ducks. Seriously, go check it out. It’s not your traditional ‘grr argh’ zombie novel, but I think zombie fans will love it too.

Fun fact: I used the Halloween pencil from question nine to write at least 70% of MZB.

GOING HOME
A Nugget Romance
By STACY FINZ

Book Blurb

The small mountain town of Nugget, California, has a strange way of giving people unexpected reasons to start over—and find the most irresistible chances to fall in love…

Maddy Breyer needs to prove she can make her own life after betrayal blew up her previous happily-ever-after. Staying totally focused on renovating a decrepit mansion into a bed-and-breakfast might help her—and this recession-hit town—finally turn things around. But the mysterious new sheriff is the kind of lawbreaking temptation that’s an even bigger challenge to resist…

Detective Rhys Shepard is only back in Nugget long enough to care for his ailing father. He’s got a big-city promotion far away from this place that never accepted him. He does not need a sudden crime wave to solve. Or one leggy case of heartbreak stirring up all kinds of trouble and challenging his rules. Which might explain why he’s suddenly finding it hard to leave…

GOING HOME
A Nugget Romance
By STACY FINZ

Excerpt

The place was modest to say the least. Maddy had to walk through the bedroom to get to the kitchen, and the bathroom was in the back of the house.

But with a little imagination, she could probably make it habitable. Maybe even cute. Since deciding on her move to Nugget she’d put off house hunting until the last minute. At least this little duplex apartment would only be temporary. As soon as the contractors spiffed up quarters in the soon-to-be-renovated Lumber Baron Inn, she’d move in there so she could supervise the entire overhaul. In the meantime, she could walk to the inn from here.

“So you taking the place?” The guy who’d introduced himself as Rhys Shepard, the duplex owner’s son, leaned against the doorjamb.

“Maybe,” she said, noticing the way his shoulders filled the doorway. Maddy suddenly wished she’d put on makeup, maybe even wore her hair down instead of piling it up on top of her head like a mop.

She gave the apartment one last walk-through, staring out the windows at the breathtaking views. She could see the river, snow-covered mountains, and the town, which from here looked almost quaint.

“Did the Donner Party come through here?” she asked. Ever since her brother, Nate, had found her holed up in her Pacific Heights Edwardian, inconsolable over her husband’s deception, and had dragged her to Nugget, she’d become obsessed with the tragedy. She stared out at a distant mountain peak and thought maybe it happened there. Maybe that’s where the snowbound pioneers started feasting on the dead.

She’d have spatchcocked Dave, that’s for sure.

She turned to face Rhys. “Is that why this street’s named Donner Road?”

“Yeah . . . I think so. If you’re not interested–”

“I’ll take it.” She reached in her purse for a checkbook. “Deposit and first month’s rent, right?”

“That’ll do you.” He continued to stand there while she wrote the check. “So, you’re fixing up the old Lumber Baron place?”

“Yes. How’d you hear about it?” she asked.

He grinned, showing a nice set of white teeth against his tan skin. “The whole town’s talking about it. No secrets in Nugget.”

She caught him checking out her wedding ring as she handed him the payment.

“Let me get you the key.” He disappeared into his dad’s side of the building and returned a few minutes later. “Here you go.”

“Thanks. I probably won’t need it until Monday,” she said, stashing the key in one of the zippered compartments of her handbag. “That’s when the movers are bringing my stuff.”

“You know what time? Mine’s also coming Monday. I don’t think there’s enough room in the driveway for two trucks.”

Her curiosity must’ve shown, because he gave her a tight smile and said, “I’m your new neighbor.”

“I thought your dad lives here?” The apartment barely had enough space for one person, let alone a second, tall, really built one.

“Me, too, now.” He didn’t elaborate, just jutted that strong square jaw of his at her in a way that said, Wouldya answer my original question?

“Hopefully in the morning. What time’s yours scheduled?”

He shrugged. “They’re coming from Houston, so whenever they get here. Maybe it won’t be a problem. We’ll have to play it by ear.”

“Texas, huh?” Curiosity was killing her. “Job transfer?”

“Something like that,” he said, and Maddy thought she detected a tint of bitterness in his voice. “When’s your husband arriving?”

When he’s done screwing our best friend’s widow. For all Maddy knew Gabby had already joined Dave in Paris. “I’m not sure yet,” she answered, gazing out at the railroad tracks. “Do the trains run frequently?”

“Only every four or five hours.”

Super!

As if reading her mind, he said, “Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it,” and flashed those pearly whites again.

Maybe it was just Maddy, but the smile seemed slightly sadistic. She got the feeling that moving here didn’t rank high in his top picks of places to live and you know what they say . . . misery loves company.

“Well . . . I guess I better get going. I have a meeting with the contractor and the carpenter.” Folding the rental agreement, she stuffed it in her purse.

He pushed himself away from the door. “I’m on my way to the bowling alley, too. Want a lift?”

She jerked her head up in surprise. “How’d you know the meeting was at the bowling alley?”

He grinned again. “I told you: no secrets in Nugget. You want that ride?”

She looked over at her new Subaru. The locals told her she’d need all-wheel drive for the rough winters. So she traded Dave’s right-out-of-the-showroom Porsche Carrera for an Outback and kept the change for her divorce fund.

What the hell. She’d take a ride with a stranger. It was just a short walk back and Maddy could certainly use the exercise. Ever since finding Dave and Gabriella’s emails she’d been eating nonstop, lying on the couch, watching the Shopping Channel, stuffing her face with Cheez-Its. At one point she’d thought about taking a pair of scissors to her husband’s designer suits, scattering his pant legs and jacket arms across the front lawn. Instead, she’d just wolfed down another morning bun. The Porsche had been Nate’s idea. All that business acumen had turned her brother vicious.

“Thanks,” she said and got in the passenger side of the Ford Focus while he held the door open.

“It’s a rental,” Rhys said. “My truck’s coming with the movers.”

Maddy tried not to roll her eyes. “You grow up around here?”

“Yep.”

She fastened her seat belt and waited for him to say more, but he didn’t. “So what was that like? Growing up here?”

A deep chuckle rumbled through his throat. It was a good manly sound that gave her a little tingle. “I left as soon as I turned eighteen. So that should tell you how much I liked it.”

CODE BLUE MACARONI AND CHEESE
[Serves 8 as a side dish]

Ingredients:

1 1b. cellentani pasta
Salt and paper to taste
4 ounces of diced or cubed pancetta (Italian bacon)
4 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons flour
Two cups cream or milk (more if needed)
8 ounces crème fraiche
8 ounces shredded gruyere cheese
8 ounces shredded sharp cheddar cheese
6 tablespoon finely ground bread crumbs

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Make the pasta according to the package directions. While the pasta is cooking, fry up the pancetta in a small pan until browned (like bacon). When the pasta is done, strain in a large colander and let sit in sink. In the same pot used to make the pasta heat the butter on medium heat until melted, then add the flour, stirring constantly to make a roux. Add in the milk and crème frache, continuing to stir. Pour both cheeses into the mix and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste, stirring constantly until the cheddar and gruyere melts and the mixture resembles a gooey cheese sauce. If it’s too thick add a little more cream or milk. Turn heat to low. Add pasta and the pancetta to the pot and mix until the noodles are completely coated with the cheese mixture.

Pour mixture into a 3-quart glass Pyrex baking dish. Sprinkle with the breadcrumbs and bake for 10 minutes. If the breadcrumbs are still not browned, turn oven to the broil setting and remove after three minutes (watch closely or it will burn). Serve immediately.

KILLING SECRETS
      Thorne’s Thorns Series, Book One
       By K.L. DOCTER

Excerpt

Denver, Colorado.

At the first crack of gunfire, Rachel dove headfirst into the garden she was weeding. Listening for the second report she expected to follow, she prayed Amanda stayed at Patrick Thorne’s house where she’d gone an hour ago to play with her new friend, Suze.

Gasping for air, she inhaled the rich, spicy scent of freshly turned soil and crushed nasturtiums instead. Dirt and grit bit into her cheek and the bare flesh exposed by her cutoffs and T-shirt. The mid-afternoon sun beat hot against her shoulders and legs, and all she could do was lie there and watch a fat bumblebee dip into a russet blossom three inches from her nose.

Had she run almost nine hundred miles only to die like this, grubbing alone in the dirt like a spineless worm?

A surge of anger gave her impetus to lift her head. She peeked over the flimsy wall of twelve-inch annuals between her and the street. A second gunshot rang out, belched in a cloud of black smoke from an ancient Volkswagen bus that disappeared around the corner.

Backfire?

She groaned, more relieved than embarrassed by her overreaction. Her chin dropped. Taking several deep draughts of the thin Colorado air, she worked to calm the pound of her heart against her ribcage. Her efforts made her head swim. A minute later she was able to push herself out of the three-foot section of garden she’d mown down.

Her nerves had been on edge since she fled Dallas on Friday, five days ago. If she weren’t so overwrought it would have occurred to her Greg would never stand at a distance and take potshots at her. No. Greg liked to look into her eyes when he meted out his punishments.

An icy shiver skimmed her skin. Each day that passed without his appearance should have reassured her she’d made the right decision to accept Katy’s arrangements with the Thornes. As long as Greg didn’t track her and Amanda to Denver, they were safe.

Problem is she hadn’t felt safe since Amanda was born and she discovered what kind of man she’d married. Now she couldn’t pluck enough weeds from Evelyn Thorne’s gardens by day to tear the anxiety from her heart at night. Her growing sense of trepidation kept her awake long after the morning stars dimmed above the mile-high city’s cloudless skies.

How could the justice system simply hand Greg a “get out of jail free” card? She’d always known the man had connections in high places, but how had he arranged for the evidence in his case—evidence she’d risked everything to provide—to disappear before he even went to trial? If he’d accomplished that feat while behind bars, how in the world was she and Amanda going to stay out of his clutches?

She felt like there were giant bull’s-eyes painted on their backs, that it was only a matter of time before Greg tracked them down. During their marriage the man would spend weeks, even months, laying meticulous groundwork for one of his cons. He’d had six months to plan dozens of new punishments for his betrayer.

“‘Til death us do part, darlin’.”

His words echoed over the expanse of time and distance, ringing a fresh peal of dread in Rachel’s breast. With one hand, she brushed clumps of soil off her tangerine T-shirt and whispered a small prayer. Please don’t let him find us!

A TASTE OF CHARDONNAY
The Napa Wine Heiresses – Book One
       By HEATHER HEYFORD

Excerpt

The St. Pierre sisters tumbled into the Napa County jail, stopping short at the transparent barrier in front of the reception desk. Chardonnay vaguely recalled the floor plan from her last visit. From a holding cell in the rear, they could hear Papa bellowing in his unmistakable Franglais.

“I am American citizen! I have gun license! Wait until my daughter gets here. She is lawyer! I will sue your—”

Papa had always had a flair for the dramatic.

Following an interminable wait during which the incessant click of her older sister’s pacing echoed off the tile walls, they were let into a processing area and a young officer holding a clipboard came out to meet them.

“Which one of you is”—he raised the clipboard to eye level and squinted—“Sauvignon?” he said with the audible equivalent of an eye roll.

This guy must be new to the force. The St. Pierres weren’t accustomed to going many places in the valley without being recognized.

Savvy stepped forward. “I am.”

Thank heavens Savvy was an attorney. Well, almost. She’d recently graduated law school but had yet to take the bar.

“And these are my sisters, Chardonnay and Merlot.”

The cop stared.

Was it their fault Papa had named his daughters for grape varietals?

He started to smile, furrowed his brow, and then hitched up his pants with his free hand. With a half chuckle, he said, “Cheese-oh-man. You can’t make this stuff up. Wait till I tell the folks back in Ohio.”

読書About the author, Heather Heyford…

Born in the Northeast, Heather Heyford learned to walk and talk in Texas, and then moved to England. (“Ya’ll want some scones?”) While in Europe, Heather was forced by her cruel parents to spend Saturdays in the leopard vinyl back seat of their Peugeot, motoring from one medieval pile to the next for the lame purpose of ‘learning something.’ What she soon learned was how to allay the boredom by stashing a Cosmo under the seat. Now a recovering teacher, Heather writes love stories, feeds hardboiled eggs to suburban foxes, and makes art in the Mid-Atlantic. See more at HeatherHeyford.com

**Author Peek** Interview with K.L. Docter

Killing_secrets(1)SMALLER(2)

**AUTHOR PEEK** Interview with K.L. Docter

INTRODUCING…K.L.

Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a full-time writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share to introduce yourself.

I’ve lived most of my life in Colorado and, despite a couple of moves outside of the state, I’ve come back every time. I love my mountains and the wonderful weather here. Give me a chance to go camping or fishing in the mountains with my husband and my laptop and I’m so there! I talk a lot about going to the beach and I do love Maui, but I’d never move there permanently. A three month writing vacation there wouldn’t be out of the question though! :)

1. What genre(s) do you write and why?

I write two different kinds of romance novels…Romantic Suspense w/a K.L. Docter and Contemporary Romance w/a Karen Docter: Romance.

My contemporary romances are cute and spicy, and run about 50,000 words. They’re lighthearted, make-me-sigh kind of romances. I have tremendous fun throwing the hero and heroine together with a tickle and a smile. I read a lot of Harlequin/Silhouette romances and wrote for many years with those kinds of stories in my head. And, despite the fact that my characters deal with serious issues – for instance, in Satin Pleasures, the heroine is dealing with an intense drive to right a wrong and it makes her a workaholic, while the hero has left his stressful career behind – I allow them to have fun while they’re learning something about themselves and each other. I didn’t set out to deliberately write humorous books. It’s just the way these characters develop in my head. I tend to write the kind of stories that I can see an actress like Meg Ryan playing the lead role.

My romantic suspense, on the other hand, is twice as long. Killing Secrets is around 110,000 words, closer in word count to the more traditional single title books. For years, I had been writing only shorter contemporaries, but many of my stories had suspense elements in them. I love suspense and mysteries, too, so I decided a couple of years ago to explore the darker suspense angle. These books are a lot more complicated to write. I not only have to develop a romance, but find a way to carry the characters through the dangers that unexpectedly drop into their everyday worlds. I actually have two antagonists in Killing Secrets, so the hero and heroine don’t always know where the danger is coming from. These stories also demand that I dig deeper into the psyche of a serial killer, which I find fascinating. I’m a huge Criminal Minds fan.

I have so many stories in my “Book File” that I won’t run out of material anytime soon. I love to write at both ends of the spectrum, lighthearted one moment, psychological suspense the next. Now, if I could only write faster!

2. If you were to choose one superpower, what would it be?

Healing. I would love to be able to touch someone and help them to heal, whether it’s mental or physical illness/damage. There is so much pain in the world, I think I’d be pretty busy. But it would be so worth it!

3. Do you ever get stuck when you’re writing a book? What do you do to get “unstuck”?

Like most writers, I do get stuck occasionally, although it’s not generally writer’s block, per se. I’m both a pantser (writing by the seat of my pants) and a plotter. I began writing as a pantser, but discovered myself in perpetual revision. Then, I learned the “W” plotting technique years ago. (I loved it so much, I taught others how to use it for about 12 years.)

Anyway, the “W” has become such an integral part of my writing that the only time I really run into walls is if I haven’t properly done the plotting. Now I know chapter-by-chapter and scene-by-scene where my stories are going. Whenever I find it difficult to motivate myself through a scene, my pantser tendencies kick back in. I seldom write in a linear, chronological, straight line. If I get stuck with a scene, I’ll skip to another scene…even if it’s chapter eleven and I’m only on chapter five. If I wake up with a particular scene running through my head, that’s the one I focus on because it’s “there”. Those scenes seem to write themselves. Who am I to argue with my muse? :)

4. What is your least favorite part of writing ?

Marketing. Don’t get me wrong. I love social media and talking to my readers. I’ve made oodles of friends. I don’t, however, like selling myself and my books. This is a problem for an Indie writer like me. I have no one to sell me…but me. A dichotomy that makes me crazy. I just want to write my books and everyone to know they’re out there and worth reading.

Hmmm, maybe I need to look into telepathy as my superpower. Then, I can shoot you all a mental picture about the book I have coming out so we can just play the rest of the time.

5. If we came to your house for dinner, what would you prepare for us?

Anyone who reads my blog knows I love to cook. My Karen’s Killer Fixin’s blog on Fridays highlights all of the recipes I’ve collected over the years. Lately, I’ve been sharing other author’s recipes.

If you came to my house for dinner, I’d make something you loved. You’d be a friend so I’d know your favorite meal. Love lasagna? I’d make that. Chicken enchiladas? You got it. I make a mean Enchilada Chili Chicken over Basmati Rice, my own creation. I probably have a recipe you’d love…and I take very good care of my friends.

6. What is your typical day like?

I don’t generally get to bed much before 1:00 am., so I don’t get up too early. But I’m usually in my office with my first cup of coffee by 8:00 or 9:00. I spend the morning taking care of business, social media, my seven emails, blog, etc. (I have multiple emails for the various hats I wear.) As soon as I clear those decks, I try to write. On a good day, that means 10:00ish. On a not-so-good day, it might be noonish. I don’t write at night because I’m not nearly as productive and I used to battle insomnia. Generally, though, I’m on the computer 10-12 hours a day, seven days a week. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I join several of my writing buds for Just Write days, when we get together outside of our usual lives and just write for several hours. I love my Just Write days!

7. How likely are the people you meet going to end up in your next book?

I think the better question is: How likely are the people I meet NOT going to end up in my next book? :) I’m an observer of life and find more wonderful character traits and storylines and personalities to give me ideas and fill my creative well.

Oh, everyone, don’t freak out! You’ll never recognize yourself in my stories…I hope. But it’s fun to find something unique or special that I can use to make my characters and stories richer, more full-bodied. I don’t want to write cardboard characters so I tap the world.

8. A penguin walks into your office, right now, wearing a sombrero. What does he say to you and why is he here?

He says he’s here to snuggle with the purple flower penguin sitting on my printer. She’s a cute, little thing, with a bright smile, one of the “writing partners” my granddaughter gave me. I don’t know how she’ll feel about the sombrero though…the penguin, not my granddaughter. :)

9. What’s your favorite beverage?

Anyone who knows me can answer this question. I’m a coffee hound. I haven’t met a coffee I didn’t like. I drink coffee all day, all flavors, although I do move to decaf in the late afternoon so I can actually sleep at night. I especially enjoy favored coffees, cappuccino, espresso, and the occasional latte. Yes, I have a cappuccino/espresso machine and a Keurig, and I know how to use them!

10. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?

Actually, I just released (April) the first book in my romantic suspense, KILLING SECRETS, Thorne’s Thorns Series ~ Book 1.

When I started writing Killing Secrets, I only had Patrick’s story in my head. But, brainstorming his backstory, I discovered his father was a retired police officer and his mother was a woman who came from money who did volunteer work. It wasn’t a far leap for Ross Thorne to be like his wife and want to help some of the young boys he might come into contact with in his police work. Patrick was their only biological son, but Ross and Evelyn gave him foster brothers. All of the boys were in minor trouble at one time or another growing up, so they became known as Thorne’s Thorns. Once I knew who Patrick’s brothers were, I had to write their stories.

Making the brothers’ stories credible standalone novels is a matter of developing distinctive individuals with specific goals and problems. These men are real to me now and their stories are different, but they’re connected by their upbringing and their love for each other. All of Patrick’s foster brothers might have different last names but they’re still family. I’m currently working on Ben Zancanelli’s story, KILLING PROOF. I’m estimating the book will release January or February 2015.

I’m also working on a contemporary romance called I DO, I DO…FOR NOW. It’s a cute romance about a firefighter and a divorce lawyer who were best friends as children, separated until adulthood. When they meet again, they end up using a faux engagement to convince his ex-in-laws and her bosses that they’re in a committed relationship, despite their desire to avoid familial entanglements. They soon learn there’s family, and then there’s family. I DO, I DO…FOR NOW is a December release.

Karen’s Killer Fixin’s: Empanadas

Following_RecipeSMALLER   It’s time for Karen’s Killer Fixin’s! Over the years, I’ve filled two 4-inch, 3-ring binders with my own creations as well as recipes my family and friends were willing to share with me. I simply love to cook and want to share that love with my readers. So every Friday, I share one recipe I think you and your family might enjoy. It might be a main course recipe. A cookie or baked item. Candy. Salads. Whatever strikes my eye and fancy…which today is EMPANADAS!

Empanadas are a little bit of work for a lot of fun and flavor. But so worth it! Who doesn’t like little meat or fruit pies? I think they can be just as good eaten cold for lunch, depending on the ingredients you use. I personally don’t like cold beans but a meat, onion and red pepper empanada is a nice alternative to a sandwich.

I hope you enjoy today’s Killer Fixin’s. Happy eating!

Karen

P.S. We’re at 165 recipes and counting with this posting. Hope you find some recipes you like. If this is your first visit, please check out past blogs for more Killer Fixin’s. In the right hand column menu, you can even look up past recipes by type. i.e. Desserts, Breads, Beef, Chicken, Soups, Author Specials, etc.

Karen’s Killer Fixin’s Blog

EMPANADAS
[Makes 10]

DOUGH:

2 cups flour
½ tsp. salt
2/3 cup shortening
6 T. water (approximate)

SAVORY FILLING OPTIONS:

1 lb. browned/cooked meat (beef, chorizo, chicken, pork)
1 diced onion
1 diced green or red bell pepper
1 can black/red/pinto beans
Salt & pepper to taste

SWEET FILLING OPTIONS:

About 2½ cups fresh fruit (apples, raisins, blueberries, pitted cherries, etc.)
1 tsp. cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg
1 cup sugar

Make dough: Mix flour and salt. Cut in shortening until pieces are the size of small peas. Add a small amount of water to slightly moisten. Form dough into a ball. Roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thick and cut into 4-inch circles. Lightly flour both sides of the circles.

NOTE: If you don’t have a professional pastry cutter, you can use two table knives and “cut” (crisscross) the flour and shortening together.

To make savory filling: Brown beef, green or red peppers, and onions together. Drain excess fat. Mix beans into the meat mixture and cook until hot.

To make sweet filling: In a saucepan, mix fruit, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Heat over medium heat until hot, thoroughly mixing.

Place large spoonful of filling in the center of a round circle. Place another circle on top and pinch edges together with a fork. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven until golden brown, approximately 30 minutes.

PRIMA DONNA
       By Laura Drewry

Book Blurb

In USA Today bestselling author Laura Drewry’s witty, sizzling, and tender romance for readers of Jill Shalvis and Susan Mallery, a woman who can’t slow down discovers that the perfect guy is in hot pursuit.

Even when her hair salon goes under and she’s on the brink of breaking, Regan Burke keeps her “I’m just fine” attitude. She’s had a tough life, coping with a difficult family and keeping her act together…barely. Right now, she just needs a job, any job, so she can pay her mother’s medical bills. It’s the exact wrong time for Carter Scott to come into her life—and to be so damn sexy, so distracting, and so determined to get close.

Carter isn’t looking for anything serious—his heart belongs to the kids who depend on his pediatric practice—but something about Regan makes him reconsider. Maybe it’s the scars she hides so well, the secrets she can’t share. Carter knows all about that kind of pain, and he wants to help. But offering Regan a job in his office only makes things worse, even if their chemistry is off the charts. Lucky for them both, Carter isn’t about to let go of love without a fight.

PRIMA DONNA
      By Laura Drewry

Excerpt

Carter hung his helmet on the handlebar, then sauntered over to where she stood in front of the glass door, shivering in her way-too-big green sweatshirt as she watched the truck pull away.

“Hey.” She wrapped her arms over her stomach, pressed her lips together, and blinked up at him. No mistake about it, the guard was down and she was fighting like hell to get it back up. “What’re you doing here?”

“There’s someth . . . you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m f—” She snapped her mouth closed, took a second to breathe, then tried again. When her mouth opened and closed two more times without uttering a sound, Carter pushed the door open and ushered her inside. She covered her mouth with one hand and held the other up, palm out. “Give me a minute.”

Without a backward glance, she bolted to the back of the salon and disappeared into the bathroom, her long ponytail bobbing against her back as she moved. Carter stood inside the door with his hands stuffed in his pockets, staring at the compact empty space. The guy in the truck really did take everything; the sinks, the chairs, the shelves. Hell, even the mirrors were gone.

It seemed smaller with everything gone but for some reason the void was huge. What was he supposed to do now? Offering her a new job so soon after her own business closed seemed wrong, sort of like he wasn’t giving her time to . . . what? To grieve?

Maybe he should call Jayne. This was definitely one of those chicks-needed situations where they could cry and eat ice cream and do each other’s nails or whatever it was they did. It was definitely not something a guy was good at.

He’d just pulled his phone out when Regan stepped out of the bathroom; no tears, but her eyes were still glassy, and if she chewed her bottom lip any harder, she’d chew it right off.

“Sorry ’bout that.” She smiled brightly—too brightly—and stopped well out of his reach. “What’s up?”

“Regan—” Carter stuffed the phone back in his pocket and took a step toward her, but she backed away, keeping a good wide gap between them. “You sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah, of course.” Her voice was quiet, soft, and when it started to waver, she cleared her throat and spoke louder. “I’m fine.”

“Right. Fine.” He tipped his head to the right and stared back at her. She could say whatever she liked, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out her bullshit meter was getting dangerously close to red-lining.

Frozen Series – Book 1

Excerpt

I stood up right as another bolt of lightning struck, and I saw Kiri’s eyes. She was staring straight at me. She didn’t jump in fear, but instead shook her head and turned towards her apartment. With one hand firmly on the doorknob, she punched the door once, and returned her gaze to the emptying clouds.

“That wasn’t even fair,” she said. Her voice sounded defeated.

“Kiri,” I eked. “Kiri, wait.”

“Voices,” she growled. “Plural! Because the one that has been tormenting me for years just wasn’t enough for you.”

I leapt so I was standing right behind her and placed my hand on her shoulder.

“What is it you want, Kiri?”

“For you to be real.”

“I am real.”

Her wet, silken, skin goosebumped under my hand.

“You can’t be,” she said, still facing the door. “You said you’d never come back. That I’d never see you again. And here I am. Imagining your face, hearing your voice. Wishing your hand…was…”

“Wishing my hand was what?”

“Really there, that…I could taste…”

I spun her around and brought her lips to mine. As our mouths fused, her body went lax between my arms. Her fingers slid softly down my cheeks. When my tongue touched Kiri’s, a moan came from deep inside her. I held her right hand in mine, then rose it above her head to lock her wrist against the wall. My body fell against her soft frame. I could feel myself harden, and God forgive me, as I rubbed against Kiri the light strokes had me returning her moan.

When our lips finally parted, she looked up at me and trembled. The rain streamed down her face. When the lightning flashed again, her eyes lit up as she looked at me.

“Don’t wake me,” she begged, pulling me to her again.

As her tongue danced in my mouth, I marveled at the sweet taste of it. Her fingers slipped down my chest and up and under my drenched shirt. Her lips trembled against mine as she started to explore my body, then her soft fingers slid to my waist and began unbuttoning my trousers. I pulled back and looked at her.

**Author Peek** Interview with Michel Prince

SharedRedemption_MED RedemptionofBlood_MED

**AUTHOR PEEK** Interview with Michel Prince

INTRODUCING…Michel.

Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a full-time writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share to introduce yourself.

I’m from the Twin Cities area… which I learned recently not everyone in the world immediately thinks of Minneapolis and St Paul, Minnesota when they hear. What can I say I’m a Midwest girl and everywhere I’ve lived the Twin Cities was always MSP. Since I’m not a full time writer currently I work in the refunds department in a large hospital and clinic organization. Additionally I’ve recently picked my camera up again after a break to create exclusive stock photographs for book covers. Hobbies tend to be following my son around to athletic events. As he’s gotten older the distance traveled keeps extending. What can I say at least I get to see the U.S.

1. How did you get started writing?

How I got seriously writing was to silence the voices. I’ve always had scenes running through my head with various ideas, but after listening to an interview with an author I was reading I finally put finger to keyboard, three weeks later I had finished a rough draft of my first book Chrysalis, sadly the story wasn’t done and after four books I became hooked on telling my stories.

2. What appeals to you about the genre that you write?

I write in multiple genres, but with paranormal I do quite a bit of historical research because I love intermixing real events in my stories. What’s better than making people rethink the history they know? Is there something great about that little bit of what if in the world.

3. What is your favorite part of writing?

My readers. True story, I was almost in tears as I edited a book. It wasn’t even to my editor at the time I was just reviewing it. It though it was horrible. My son looked at me and asked what was wrong. I replied. “I suck at writing and this book is horrible.” He just shrugged and said “Then everyone will love it. That’s what you say and the more you think it’s bad the more they want it.” What can I say every time I’m really in deep doubt about what I do a stranger posts a review and remind me that I was able to take them away and make their day better.

4. If you had to give up writing and do something else, what would you do instead?

I’m probably go back to photography full time, but I wouldn’t family and weddings again. I’d focus on models and trying to learn more about make up so I could help make awesome covers.

5. What’s your favorite meal of the day?

Second breakfast, I don’t know I’m a grazer. Although I try to get dinner together for my family, I’m not really a planner and like my writing most of my accidents are everyone’s favorite.

6. Which are your favorite characters to write, the female characters or the male characters? The heroes and heroines, or the villains?

Smart ass ones. I love one liners and characters that pick with each other. In my Growing Strong Series we follow a group of four best friends. They have their own language and how they interact and I get lost in their snips and comments sometimes. I can hear them clearly in my head and sometimes forget to add the tags because it can go so fast.

7. Are you an avid reader? When you do read someone else’s writing, what is your favorite genre?

I go in spurts when it comes to reading. Since I’ve got on a publishing schedule I’ve had to back off my reading, but before that I was reading constantly. Now, thanks to audiable I’ve been able to at least keep up with reading somewhat. I usually have one book on audio, one on ereader and one in paperback that I’m reading at the same time. I’ve learned to expand my horizons as far as genres. I love mysteries, those authors amaze me at how they do what they do. Phillippa Gregory writes amazing historicals. I do love paranormal and sci-fi, but a regular contemporary romance or fiction ends up on my radar quite a bit too.

8. Many writers dream of having the ideal location to write. If you could live anywhere in the world or live a particular lifestyle, where would you be answering these questions right now?

At a cabin by a lake. Now cabin in Minnesota can rugged to nine thousand square feet with all the amenities. For me I’m somewhere in the middle. I’d like a regular house, where there are a few neighbors but it’s mostly only weekend traffic. A great view of the lake and little to no TV to distract me. Having Wi-fi is distracting enough.

9. If you were a color, what color would you be and why?

Plaid, sure there are various forms and it usually has at least two to six color combos, but if you haven’t caught on by now I don’t tend to stay in one place or one subject very long.

10. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?

My next book is Redemption of Blood, book 2 in the Frozen Series. It’s being published by Secret Cravings Publishing in October 2014. It’s the next book in the Frozen series following the romance of Trisha and James as they get twisted and turned by Lucifer’s daughter LaDressa who’s in search of the ashes of her love.

Trisha O’Driscoll started tending bar for the flexible schedule and quick cash, never imagining the young solider with a fake ID would want a woman almost twenty-years-older. They start an affair, but draw the line at commitment. Six months later, Jimmy’s changing the rules and Trisha learns this young man is anything but.

James Schmitt regrets taking his life to escape his pain. He finds salvation by joining Gabriel’s demon-hunting Frozen, but his inner demons won’t stop tormenting him. Spending most days lost in a bottle of Jack, he stays under Gabriel’s radar by following orders. Hunting demons with his new partner, Kiriana, he’s given one order: keep her safe.

Lucifer’s daughter, Princess LaDressa, seeks revenge on the woman who killed her love. Kiriana holds Damarion’s ashes and his only chance for resurrection. As the Princess’ blood begins to turn, she focuses her bloodlust on Kiriana’s partner and his woman.
