Work In Progress #Blog Hop ~ The Next Big Thing
Rules:
***Answer the ten questions about your current WIP (Work In Progress) on your blog
***Tag five other writers/bloggers and add their links so we can hop over and meet them.
It’s that simple.
Thanks Michele Richard for tagging me!
Ten Interview Questions for The Next Big Thing:
What is the working title of your book?
Hidden Under Her Heart
Where did the idea come from for the book?
While helping with my friend Melisa Hamling's book promotion of Twenty Weeks, I got the idea to write about an older character who is faced with the dilemma of whether to have an abortion or not. I made her a nurse so she'd be aware of all of the facts and upped the ante on the circumstances of her pregnancy.
What genre does your book fall under?
Multiracial Romance, Contemporary Issues
Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
I really hadn't thought of actors. I do have stock photos of the characters in mind. My two main characters are Lucas Knight, a triathlete and Maryanne Torres, a nurse. My cover reveals Maryanne Torres. She is of mixed ancestry, Ohlone Indian, Mexican, Irish, Portuguese and Chinese.
Lucas is a handsome devil, of course. He most resembles this awesome model at this URL
You can read a character interview of Lucas on my blog post: Rachelle, Do you Always Write A**hole Men?
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
Raped and pregnant, a young nurse seeks justice while holding onto a shameful secret.
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
Self-published.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
I'm about 62K words into my first draft and it has taken me 28 days. I estimate it will take me 40-50 days to complete the first draft.
What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
Twenty Weeks , by Melisa Hamling
Waiting on Hope , by T.M. Souders
Who or What inspired you to write this book?
My best writer friend, Melisa Hamling, of course! She wrote an awesome book exploring the same issue for the Young Adult crowd. My son Ross, who passed away at 21 days old, inspired me to portray the life of a baby who was of the age of other babies who were aborted. He was delivered prematurely just shy of the third trimester. And of course all the men and women out there who have experienced abortion and are hurting from it deserve a chance at redemption and forgiveness.
What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
This book features a multi-racial romance. I have always grown up in a diverse environment and to me, multi-racial relationships are the norm. As with any relationships, there are issues, but the added kaleidoscope of a multi-racial relationship piques my interest. At the end, people are people, and we are all created from one blood, so this aspect is a subplot that makes my characterizations richer.

#BookChat The Tangled Web by J. P. Lane

The Tangled Web is a story of passion, patriotism and political intrigue; of drug trafficking culminating in an assassination. The plot travels between London, Prague, New York and Cali, but the central location is a Caribbean island, which I’ve chosen to remain nameless.
“Still gazing out the window of his plane, Armstrong could see the island now, or rather he could sense it. Though lit by brilliant moonlight, only lights twinkling down the mountains to the harbor were visible from the air. It always amazed him how much subliminal energy this island had. He could almost hear it rising from the earth like the distant beat of rasta drums. It had been more than twenty years since it had been his permanent home, but now, as his plane prepared to land, he had that familiar feeling of coming home. It always felt good to be back, though this time would be different.”
From the AuthorI’m always observant of the patterns of life –how all the dots connect and so it’s easy to see that The Tangled Web came about because of a call to an old friend I hadn’t spoken with in years - who just happened to have been the person who roped me into a career in advertising. At the time of the call, I was a retired copywriter, sworn off ever writing again. But when my friend suggested I write a novel, I had to pause and think. Knowing the path he had once persuaded me to take had led me to a lot more than becoming a writer, I had every reason to heed the signpost pointing to a new adventure. I’m glad I did.
What Readers are Saying“The heat of the tropics is not as intense as the heat from this fascinating novel reaching out beyond the pages it is written on to imprint in the reader's memory and heart.” Linda Nance“It was disturbing to read about the real life misery and fear that many of the poor have to endure on such a beautiful and idealic island, due to corruption at the highest levels of government.” Debra Wright“This is a work of fiction, but very relevant in today's society.” I. Entenza
Behind the Scenes with J.P.There are a lot of books entitled The Tangled Web, as I discovered after I published mine. I don’t know why those other authors named their books The Tangled Web. I can only tell you my novel got its name because weaving that web was a dizzying task. I’ll share something I haven’t shared before - there was a lapse of about six months between when I completed the first draft and when I returned to it with a fresh eye. I trashed about half of it. There was a sub plot that served no purpose except to detract from the main story. Lauren was a huge struggle, but it seems the struggle paid off because readers like her a lot. Though I’m bemused by them thinking she’s the main character. I thought Logan was. But what do I know? I’m only the author. Once you write a book, it’s over to the reader.
J.P. Lane was born and raised in Jamaica. She’s lived in London, Southeast Asia, Puerto Rico, and Miami where she was an award-winning writer for The Miami Herald’s marketing team. Lane, who has been published in other leading Florida publications, now resides in rural north Florida

#BookReview Deep as Bone by Malla Duncan #psychthriller

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
It is hard to let go of this complex and thrilling book.
Ilsa Joubert is an unreliable first person narrator, a woman steeped in tragedy, looking, always looking for what she cannot have. Ilsa takes a job as nanny to a troubled child, Amy, a girl with nightmares and subject to violent outbursts. Meanwhile, bits and pieces of Ilsa's troubled background are gleaned while Ilsa investigates the disappearance of Amy's favorite aunt, Clare.
A cold blooded murderess keeps tabs on Ilsa, but Ilsa is not so innocent herself. The interweaving of Ilsa's storyline in South Africa with the mysterious deaths surrounding Amy's family keeps the reader on his toes. Can Ilsa's narration be believed? Or is she hiding things from us? What excuses does she give herself for the unsavory tidbits she occasionally lets us in on?
Couple with the author's poetic descriptions of both the Karoo in South Africa and the typical English country manor, Deep as Bone is a haunting and fascinating tale of deep seated emotional dysfunction that spirals into a climatic and tragic ending.

#BookReview Always and Forever by Chantel Rhondeau

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Lily is a heroine you'll love to cheer for. An abused woman, she runs from an unjust accusation to start a new life as a companion to a wealthy matriarch, one who just happens to have an unhappy hunk of a grandson.
Their love story begins with deception and through many trials, excitement and danger, ends with trust. Zach is a hero any woman would want to take home. Several times when I was reading the book, I screamed at Lily. "If you don't want him, send him to me!" He was considerate and caring, always thinking of what would be good for Lilly. He was also quick to forgive her and understood her issues, dealing with low self-esteem and guilt.
The warning is spot on. If you enjoy a bit of steam, this book's for you. Zach and Lilly know how to enjoy each other thoroughly despite the danger at their door. 5 stars and a bang-up debut for a new author!

#BookChat MALDENE by Mark Anthony Tierno

Maldene is a world of fantasy and science, a world of fantastic creatures, characters that range from the crazy to the wise, and home to many astounding secrets. It is also home to the most villainous evil known: Miro (Pronounced MY-RO). It is said that even the gods fear Miro, though they aren't saying why, and stories of this evil wizard go back many thousands of years.
The Maldene series spans several continents of this giant Earth-swallowing world, crosses to other dimensions, and later on in the series other worlds and even far distant periods in its history. But it all begins in the first book (currently published as Volume I and Volume II), in which we follow Sabu, Eldar, Sindar and their companions on a search for secrets, destiny, and discovery of what REALLY goes on in the world. Three different continents, journey to a second world, the Sea of A Thousand Islands, Tedelnosho (The Great Whirlpool), the mysterious King who is the only one willing to stand up to Miro's forces, over a dozen main characters, several alien races (from the sea-going Thirdocians to the avian-evolved K˙ecians), and this is just the first book, as but the first chapter in a story that spans several books.
_________________________
How I came to write this book:
This book evolved in my mind from the germ of an idea to adding in different elements over the years. I'd always wanted to do the ultimate villain, and I loved fantasy and SF, of which this story combined both. Finally, while in the course of helping my mom care for my dad (he had Parkinson's Disease), my grandfather's old house burned down, the insurance money from which gave us some breathing space and allowed me some time to start into writing my epic. Just the writing of it did a lot to raise the bleak atmosphere that had settled upon the house and family.
_________________
Behind the scenes with the author:
I wrote this book under pretty bleak conditions. My Dad got Parkinson's Disease when I was in High School, so by the time I started this little epic he was pretty bad off. Could barely walk without falling, looked like a walking corpse. I was helping out my Mom full time while beating myself up about my own lack of employment (my mom would say, "You have a job, taking care of us"). When the Eaton Canyon fire took out my grandpa's old house (he'd been dead for 20 years but my mom never had the heart to sell the place) that brought in some relief in the form of insurance money. While now helping my mom also clean up the mess left by the fire, I began to write. And write. and write. Now my Dad was saying "when you gonna get a publisher?" in the same tone of voice a parent would scold "when you gonna get a job), and my mom was always trying to sneak a peak over my shoulder to see what I was up to. It lifted the general spirit of the house, more so because what I was working on seemed to be somewhat brilliant by all accounts.
My Dad never lived to see my first book published. My kom lived long enough to see it published under my now-former publisher then see me do a reading in a library. She passed away before I found out that my old publisher was a waste of time.
What readers are saying:
Rupa Dore, reader: "A world beyond time... an adventure beyond imagination"
Charles Saunders, copywriter and author (taken from a review on his site): In the preface to his two-volume epic, Maldene, author Mark Anthony Tierno invites readers to imagine "a giant, Earth-Swallowing sphere, swaddled green with the color of life, the glare of its giant blue star glistening off its atmosphere in colorful, almost aurora-like bursts of light... a planet all filled with magic, mystery, and utter strangeness." It takes a big imagination to envision a story equal to such a setting. Tierno, a Californian who holds advanced degrees in physics and mathematics, has created a story that fills a huge sprawling canvas upon which numerous nations, deities, sorcerers, thieves, and warriors vie for glory- although more often than not, mere survival will suffice.

Meet #Sexy Sable from Dariel Raye's Dark Sentinels Series #CharacterInterview
Sable is a ultimate alpha, a shifter and a Sentinel, born to protect their pack. The life of a Sentinel is fraught with danger and often lonely, but Dariel has agreed to let Sable talk to us here at Rachelle's Window! Yay!

Interesting. How do you think you came to be so calm? Well, I didn’t say I was calm, but I’m the calmest. There’s a difference. It’s just my nature, I guess. I’m a Libra. That might have something to do with it (grins and winks his left eye). Don’t want to misrepresent. A wolf is a wolf.
Sable, I’ve read some of “Dark Sentinels,” and I know you and Syreena lost your parents when you were just cubs. That had to be extremely hard. How did you manage? Well, day to day, it was hard. I had to learn to hunt and find shelter early. We were small, and I had my sister to protect.
The other adults didn’t help you? No. There’s kind of an unwritten law that Sentinels are born to protect – not to be protected, no matter how young we are. It’s the same reason none of the adults want to mate with us. They’re afraid their offspring will be sentinels, and that would mean facing danger and possible death all the time. It’s just second nature to us, though.
Well, I bet you have much better luck in your human form. Does it make you angry that your own pack would shun you? Not angry – just sad sometimes. On the other hand, if it hadn’t been for the stupidity of my native pack, I never would have met my Akila. (stands suddenly and begins looking at pictures and other objects)
Oh, I can tell you're really into Akila. Getting restless, huh? A bit (sheepish smile). Not used to being still long, especially not just talking about myself.
I understand. So, it’s not that you mind talking about Akila? What’s she doing today? Don’t know. Haven’t seen her. Guess that’s another reason I’m feeling a bit agitated.
Sit, sit. (pats the cushion) Come closer.... I don't bite. Sure (glances at watch) Speaking of Akila, I need to...
Just a couple more questions, okay? No prob.

Can readers expect to learn more about you in other “Dark Sentinels” books? Yes. I can’t elaborate much or Dariel will be pissed with me, but yes. Book one was just an introduction.
That’s good. I look forward to getting to know you better in the series. So, what do you think made you care so much for Akila? Mmmm. Everything. She’s caring, honest, sexy as hell, passionate, and protective. I’d never had anyone besides my sister feel protective towards me. That’s a real turn-on.
So, you’re protector of your pack, right? Right. What kind of reaction do you expect from them about Akila? Ah! (exasperated sound) Not good. They wouldn’t want me around if I hadn’t spent my life keeping their sorry asses out of slings, so I’m pretty sure their reaction won’t be good. I don’t guess Dariel will mind me saying we’ll deal with that more in book two (stands, smiles, and extends his hand for me to shake it.)
Well, it's sure been nice having you, Sable. I know it's hard to keep a manly, alpha, studly, sexy, wolf man like you on a leash, so I'll... ah... just let go of your hand. Bye!
Be sure to check out Dark Sentinel's Book Trailer here.

#AuthorInterview Jen Talty and Dark Water
1. Hi Jen Talty, glad to have you on my blog today, I hear you have a new book coming out. Can you tell us a bit about it?

In the first book, Frank was a supporting character. He was a protégé to the Hero (Jared Blake) and he was so much fun to write. He kept Jared on his toes, but never got in the way. I think I secretly had a crush on Frank it must have shown in the writing, which is why readers responded so positively toward him, so I had to dig deeper into his character to find his story. Here is the blurb for Dark Water :
Lacy DeGeorgio never imagined she'd have to be responsible for anyone but herself. She's strong, stubborn and fiercely independent. She needs no one. She's a woman determined to do things her way, on her own. But when a freak boating accident takes her sister Hannah's life, Lacy finds herself not only back in her hometown of Lake George, New York, but in a custody battle for her eleven-year-old nephew, Andy. Just when things couldn't get any worse, pesky State Trooper Frank Harmon starts showing up, tearing down all her defenses, making her want things she's never wanted before. She'll trust him with her nephew, but can she trust him with her heart?
New York State Trooper Frank Harmon is a man of honor and duty. He's always done things by the book, believing the law always works in favor of those who uphold it. Until the day he took a domestic disturbance call at the DeGeorgio trailer, and even though he knew something bad was about to happen, he had to walk away. Two days later, he pulled Hannah DeGeorgio's body from the icy cold waters of Lake George, changing his life forever. He sets out to make sure Hannah's killer is brought to justice and in the process makes a home for a family he thought he never wanted.
2. Sounds like a real thriller and a romance with sparks. What genres do you like to write in? Do you pay attention to genre rules or bend them?
I love to write Romantic Suspense. I’m fascinated by the darker side of human nature and often ask myself ‘what would cause someone to cross a line they thought they would never cross’? My business partner, NY Times Bestselling Author Bob Mayer has taught me the 3 rules of rule breaking: 1) Know the rule 2) break the rule and 3) have a good reason for breaking the rule. So, I pay attention to the rules, but I have been known to break a few, but I understand why it was important to the characters or to the story that the rule be broken.
3. That's the kind of questions I ask myself. What kind of books do you like to read? Which authors influenced you?
I love to read suspense, science fiction and novels that would be considered dark. The author that has influenced me the most over my entire career as a writer has been my business partner, Bob Mayer. I was a fan of his work long before I meet him. I was lucky enough to take a weekend retreat from him and that is how we began working together. Authors like Sandra Brown, Allison Brennan, Laura Benedict and of course Stephen King have influenced the way I write.
4. Are you a character driven or plot driven writer?
I look to plot first—suspense tends to lend itself well to the ‘what if’ question. Dark Water, the what if was: what if the only way to save your nephew was to come back to the one place you swore you’d never ever return to? It’s a simple question, and really isn’t the bulk of the story, but it gives me a place to start. From there I focus on character. Who is the protagonist and who is the antagonist and how do they fit into my story question?
5. Do you have any advice for writers who are just starting out?
The best advice I ever got was from Bob Mayer, of course. Read. Write. Read. Write.
6. I agree. Reading is an extension of experiencing. Who is your favorite character?

7. Ha, ha, I bet. Okay, who was your most difficult character?
The most difficult is the heroine in a book that will be released sometime next year titled Legacy of Lies. Katie Bateman has an attitude the size of Texas and I find it hard to tone her down, but I have to, or she comes off too harsh and unlikeable. The problem is, she’s very opinionated and not afraid to say exactly what is on her mind. This tends to get her in a bit of trouble. She is sort of harsh and unlikeable in the beginning and during the course of the book she learns sometimes its better to keep your opinion to yourself.
8. Hmmm....you don’t have to tell us, but who in your life did you pattern him/her after?
Well, probably me!
Thanks a lot, Jen, for telling us about your writing and your penchant for Alpha Males. To find out more about Jen, please visit her sites:

#BookChat Whether I'll Live or Die by Stacy Eaton

Synopsis
“It sounded so simple in theory; ready... aim... fire... but what actually transpired was so much more.”
Officer Nicole Nolan holds the gun steady in her hands, knowing that life will be forever altered once she pulls the trigger. Her position as a small town police officer is to protect those who cannot protect themselves. It is her job, her career and her life.
Amanda stands where protection does not exist. With several failed relationships behind her, Amanda turns a blind eye to the possessiveness Josh displays in order to sooth her desperate need to be loved. As the mental abuse turns violent, Amanda must deal with the denial and embarrassment of being a victim once again. With her emotional and physical health siting on the edge, she must fight to regain control of her life.
A gripping story with one final destination, but will it be life or death?
*** A Portion of the proceeds will be donated to Domestic Violence Centers ***
From the Author:
I have felt the hand of Domestic Violence in my life. I deal with it every day in my job as a police officer. It is a tough subject that few want to tackle, but it needs to be spoken about. Victims need to understand they are not at fault. They need to know they can get help and get away. They need to know that there are people who will help them.
Whether I’ll Live or Die is a very intense novel that will bring to light the nasty parts of domestic violence; the fear, the embarrassment, and the self-blame. It will show you what a young victim goes through while at the same time showing you how a female police officer must deal with it in the legal sense.
It is not a light hearted love story, no fairytale romance here. This is what real life is like in the hands of an abuser.
What Readers are Saying:
“I could not put this book down until I finished reading it. Whether or not you have ever gone through mental, verbal or physical abuse, this book will strike the cord somewhere deep inside, it will make you feel the pain and anguish of the people brought to life in the story. The book will also give hope. Hope that no matter what the circumstances are, life does not have to stay this bad. It can change and be different. This book helps to learn to protect ourselves (whether you are a man, a woman or a child) against the situations anyone can come across when they expect it the least.” Reader…Tatiana L.

#AuthorInterview Christian #Author Paulette Harper
Today I'd like to welcome Paulette Harper, a Christian author who has written mainly non-fiction but has two fiction books in the works. Paulette, would you like to introduce yourself to readers?Hello Everyone! I am originally from Northern California by way of the San Francisco Bay Area. For the past year I’ve transplanted to sunny central Florida. My husband and I pastor Word of Faith Worship center in Bradenton and North Port Florida. I am the youngest of eight children, first published author and preacher. I am the mother of two adult daughters and two beautiful granddaughters. I am a radio host and owner of Write Now Literary (WNL) Virtual Book Tours .

What is your current or most recent project? My current book is Completely Whole . The inspiration came from a nudge from God. I had gone through a bad ordeal, which left me broken and scared. In order for me to write about becoming whole, I had to experience it myself. There were areas in my own life that I needed to confront and deal with. Those areas that hindered me from moving forward needed to be addressed. Once God began to point out those areas and I accepted where I was spiritually, the healing and restoration began. The process of becoming Completely Whole is continual for any believer desiring to live, walk, and pursue a life on purpose. Completely Whole is one of those books that will challenge the reader to do a self-examination of where they are as it relates to their own spirituality.
What are you planning to write next?Currently, I’m working on my first Christian fiction book. The first of two installments in the Trinity Lake series is called “The Sanctuary.” I’m extremely excited to be able to introduce to readers another side of my writing ability. My first two books as well as the two anthologies were non-fiction. I’m also working on another non-fiction book for Teens. This project will consist of teaching young girls how to handle life and deal with such issues as gossip, behavior, dress, and sex. Are you a member of a writers group? Have you attended writing courses or seminars? Have these been helpful to you?
Yes. I am a member of several on-line writing groups including some on Facebook. I have also attended several writing courses that have helped me develop my craft. I believe anyone wanting to write a book should consider attending any one of a number of courses or seminars. Have you other interests outside of writing? What do you do with your spare time?Outside of writing, I am heavenly involved in ministry with my husband. We pastor two churches in the Florida area which demands much of my time. In my spare time (what little I have) I enjoy playing board games and cardsWhat's the most useful 'how to' advice you've encountered?
The most useful “how to” advice came from a friend who shared with me on how to become an indie author. It was the greatest advice that has opened up great opportunities to help others walking that same journey.
Tell us a little about your book(s).I have authored two non-fiction, inspirational books, one author's manual, and co-authored two books. My first book, That Was Then, This Is Now, This Broken Vessel Restored, was written from my personal journey while facing divorce. Within the pages of this book are my personal struggles with rejection, abandonment, and low self-esteem. I had no idea that God was going to have me write my first book that exposed my brokenness, vulnerability, and weakness; from that, I realized He was going to use my pain to help others. My latest book, Completely Whole, is a resource-filled guide, full of practical and Biblically-based principles, real-life application strategies, and prayers to give the readers a holistic approach to living a life of wholeness through Jesus Christ. This book is inspiring, optimistic, hopeful, and encouraging, while providing a clear-cut, Scriptural blueprint for each reader to follow as they allow the Word and the power of God to transform their pain and restore their lives on their road to becoming Completely Whole.
Write Now Authors Manual was released this year. The idea around this manual is twofold: First, I want to help writers maneuver through the process of writing, promoting, and publishing their books as easily as possible. Secondly, I want this manual to be used as their guide to answer some of their questions as it pertains to the publishing industry. This manual is their handbook, author’s guide, writer's workbook, dictionary, how-to book, and instructional tool to help them become all that they desire in the area of writing. In this manual are keys to success; it is loaded with website links, terminology used in the industry, recommended books, marketing strategies, and promotional ideas that will help them bring their books to life. What genre do you consider yourself? The genre I consider myself is Christian non-fiction Inspiration.
How many books have you written, so far? Do you plan to write more?Currently my library has three of my published books along with two non-fiction anthologies. I am working on two more books. My first Christian fiction book “ The Sanctuary ” will be out later this year. I’m also working on a young girl’s teen book “ My Sista Girl , A guide to loving you, will be out early 2013. This year I released my first Write Now Author’s Manual which is a guide that I use to teach my seminars and workshops. Also available on Amazon.
Why do you write? Is it something you've always done, or always wanted to do? Or is it something that you started fairly recently?I started my writing career in 2007 with a desire to help other women that were facing the same issues I was going through. Some people are born writers; others develop the craft after facing life transitions--and this was how my writing journey began. The purpose of me writing today is to inspire others to develop and tap into every gift that God has placed within them so they can become all that He has created them to be. Where can we purchase your books?

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Locked, Loaded and Livid, but Lovely at the end.
Rebecca Ross is sarcastic, witty, and hilarious with her dry humor. We meet her on her wedding night to Mr. Wrong. Rebecca goes back in time to explain exactly how she ended up in this horrific situation. Following her dreams and inspired by Grandma Emma, Rebecca flies from her comfortable middle class suburban nest to the hills of Hollywood.
Her adventures there are full of ups and downs and include crazed roommates, sleazy agents, and a devilish man who gives her a double wallop, sending her back to the arms of dear mom.
Rebecca brings the narration to the aftermath of the wedding, including delectable descriptions of an Italian honeymoon from hell, her newlywed husbands insane and ridiculous acts of stupidity and rescue by an unlikely knight in shining armor.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE SURPRISING TWIST AT THE END. But I cannot give it away. Guaranteed you will walk away cheerful that all the stars lined up, rewarding Rebecca Ross with her happily ever after.
