Making Comics – Page Turns and Pacing

In this new tutorial video I cover a couple storytelling techniques unique to comics- page turns and panel size/configuration for dialogue. In my demonstrations I use page artwork by Max Dunbar, Cory Smith, Steven Cummings, and Djibril Morissette-Phan, with lettering by Neil Uyetake, Travis Lanham, and Marshall Dillon.

Give it a watch and, if you enjoy it and find it useful, please share it as well.

This September: CONAN THE BARBARIAN #300!

In September:
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #300

I’ve always wanted to be part of one of these big anniversary issues and now, finally, I get to write the lead story on one of my absolute favorites.

Conan and Bêlit in a harrowing adventure like no other! Pre-order now, Hyborians. It’s going to be EPIC!

CELEBRATING 300 ISSUES OF CONAN THE BARBARIAN…AND THE RETURN OF BÊLIT!

By Crom and Mitra, it’s been 300 issues since Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith first brought the Barbarian to comics in 1970’s CONAN THE BARBARIAN #1! CONAN’s oversized 300th-issue spectacular kicks off with Jim Zub and Cory Smith’s ongoing saga, as we return to Conan’s much-lauded days sailing with the queen of the seas herself, BÊLIT! But – past, present and future will collide in ways unexpected and strange!

World of Darkness: Crimson Thaw Begins in Septemeber!

Just announced on Comic Book Resources, I’m part of the team writing WORLD OF DARKNESS: CRIMSON THAW, a crossover event with vampires and werewolves fighting for survival and supremacy in the Twin Cities.

I’ve been a fan of Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse since the early 90’s when they first launched and am ecstatic to add to their lore with this action-packed supernatural showdown. Click on through to the article to find out more.

Making Comics – Dialogue Order and Page Thumbnails

In this new tutorial video I go over one of the most common problems I see with new writers and in new comic artist portfolios – setting up clear dialogue order. In my demonstrations I use page artwork by Cory Smith and Max Dunbar, with lettering by Travis Lanham and Neil Uyetake.

Give it a watch and if you enjoy it and find it useful, please share it as well.

Conan the Barbarian #22 Reviews

Blake’s Buzz: “This entire arc has been incredibly strong, and the tension refuses to let up. No matter how many foes he slays, or women he beds, Conan can’t help but fall into weirdness, and Zub’s Conan run celebrates this. Longtime fans, and new ones like me, are in for one hell of a ride through Khitai!”

Comic Book.com: “Just when I was starting to think that this arc had run out of steam, Jim Zub and company found a way to keep me intrigued. “

The Pullbox: 9.2/10 “Fans of epic fantasy action, readers who like their heroes stoic & terse, anyone interested in seeing where the ‘swords & sandals’ sub-genre came from, get thee to the nearest comic book shop and pick this one up. “
