Amazon urges you to read banned books… while banning books

~Originally posted on One Handed Writers~ Sorry for the lengthy title, but I don’t know how to put it any better than that. Back in June you may recall that we had our Amazon publishing account suspended. The reason given was that we had tried to republish books that they had previously blocked – fair enough. Last September they’d asked all erotica authors to republish their books with more subtle titles, covers and blurbs, so when we had a couple books blocked, we figured that’s all it was. Republish with cleaner terms, and all would be fine. Unfortunately, they were blocked again, and several months later we got an email from Amazon stating they had suspended our account. I could argue until I was blue in the face about how unfair it was that they didn’t give us clearer guidelines, or more transparency. I could complain about the fact that this is our living that Amazon is screwing with, and taking food out of hungry mouths (mine) by continually shifting their rules on acceptability. The Ways In Which We Write and Reach Out

Normally we talk a lot about the typical sort of thing, us authors do enjoy talking about our for-sale books, and why wouldn’t we? That’s what puts the food on the table for many, that’s the substance of our dream before us: our physical (or at least e-physical) proof of authorship. So it hardly comes as any surprise to hear that we might skirt over our other little writing excursions. Especially when they so resemble the unpaid work of wannabe-writers. However, with the ever changing playing field of publishing, especially for us vulnerable indies, it’s important to embrace the many ways in which we communicate with our readers. For instance, I occasionally write little erotic vignettes to go along with titillating pictures that tickle my fancy. You can find them over on my tumblr under the Erotica tag here. Mostly they’re just little snippets of inspirations I get from pictures that never quite flourish into something longer. Similarly, you’ll find the occasional free story on the erotica community we own, Darknest.  There’s tons of budding writers there besides us, so there’s never any shortage of stories to read and comment on. Censorship, the End of Erotica, A Hope?

Despite our best efforts to play by Amazon’s rules (their rather unhelpful “about what you’d expect” rule that is) our publishing account was suspended this week. We watched in horror as our whole livelihood — my full time job — was threatened before our very eyes, leaving us powerless to do anything about it. Just a month ago Amazon had given us the option to change and tweak our books covers/titles to meet their acceptability standards. Then this week they decided without warning that if they deem something out of their standards, there’s no second chances at all. So that’s Amazon, their store, their “rules”. If you can truly call a statement so vague as “no offensive material” a rule. We can publish our material again with them, but only after a written promise not to repeat our actions. Oh, and extra review processes for all our books. So what does that mean for us and our readers going forward? It means we can never have a set book launch date, even for our romance novels.
