Author interview: Melanie Toye author of Entice Me

I’m delighted to share this interview with author Melanie Toye about her book, Entice Me.

What is your book about?

Entice Me is about three women who are living their lives unsatisfied and unfulfilled but are unsure how to break free and live the life they really want. Which begs the question – what do they want from life? It is not until life forces them out of their daily routines that they are forced to discover what the world has to offer. Complication arises when one woman is set out to be the best in the business and when things don’t go her way no one suspects what she will do next.

How did you come up with the idea for your book?

Entice Me was created when I had just left a very demanding job that I loved but was treated very poorly. I had never felt fulfilled in any of the jobs I worked in and had spoken to many people who had worked in their careers for decades yet were unfulfilled, they were stuck. I wanted to create Entice Me to hold a motivating message through an entertaining story to not wait for life to force you to change paths, but to think about what are your ultimate dreams in life and each day work towards it.

After writing Entice Me, it seems my life has also changed directions, writing is my dream and at the time I didn’t realise it. I wanted to escape the rat race but I was not sure what I wanted to do. It seems I have been writing and telling stories all my life I just never realised it was my dream career until recently. Now I want more than ever to share with everyone to chase their own dreams. It can be daunting and push you out of your comfort zone to the max, but it is incredibly rewarding.

What makes your book different than others in your genre?

Entice Me is a chick lit novel that pushes the boundaries that this genre would not normally write about. Drama, suspense, eating disorders, fraud and even suicide make this chick lit a book that will have you hooked to your seat wanting to read more. What makes Entice Me even more compelling are the characters which can relate to anyone in any stage of life.

Who is your favorite writer? Why?

Currently it is Janet Evanovich, I love her characters, her writing style and the fact that I can’t put her books down.

What strange writing rituals do you have?

Now, I write mainly in the evening, so I like to have a cup of herbal tea and something to eat as I sit down and write. For sanity purposes I have a pen and notepad in every room of the house as well as in my bag and in my child’s pram because when I get a thought for a good story or just a conversational piece, I have to write it down as soon as possible.

Is your writing style similar to any well-known writers? If so, which one(s)?

A good chick lit novel is one filled with girly fun and adventure, which is light and entertaining that will leave you smiling throughout the read. Entice Me portrays this and adds even more thrill to your read.

I don’t think I could really compare my writing to any one else’s, as all writers add their own uniqueness and specialty. I would say my story telling is combined with self-help as I want to inspire and send a message through my novels to chase your dreams in life but be sure to have fun on the way.

Who is your Muse?

My motivator is my son. I was writing before he was born but he motivated me to self-publish my novel and become a freelance writer. I love that I am showing my son that I am chasing my dreams and he can too.

What are your hobbies?

Writing! Generally all my spare time is spent on writing and marketing. But I love it. I love spending time at the beach and exploring new adventures and places too.

Does your main character resemble anyone in your family or circle of friends?

Most likely, one cannot help but write about personalities and traits that are known to the person. When my husband and brother read the first two chapters, they said ‘this sounds just like you’. Not that I would ever go around sleeping with strangers in a drunken manner and throw my underwear on their bed (as I am happily married!) but I guess my voice came through the novel, which is great. Although once the characters where created the story just flowed through me, these characters created their own paths.

How long did it take you to write your book?

Longer than one would appreciate. I spent two years writing Entice Me, when my computer crashed I lost everything except for three chapters. I took four months off, when a friend suggested perhaps it was a sign to start again. Then I rewrote Entice Me again adding in Sally and Mr Perfect to really spice up the storyline. I believe most of the story changed but for the better. Took me another 1 year and a half to write Entice Me again. I was also working full time in another role. I would write in lunch breaks, at night time and on weekends.

What are some writing goals for the future?

My immediate goals are to become an International Best Selling Author. I would love for my novels to be turned into movies. And I will be aiming to write and self-publish some short stories and non-fiction eBooks as well as release my next fiction novel by the end of next year. My main goal at this stage is to earn a full time living from writing.

If you were stranded on an island which book would you bring with you?

I would be sure to pack a notepad and pen so I could write my own story.

What was the most difficult thing you have learned being a writer?

When writing Entice Me I had to be absolutely focused to finish the novel. Then once I finished it, I had to let go of all my fear of rejections and go out and spread the word to the world about Entice Me.

What makes a good chick lit?

Two Versions of the Same Song - eBook out now!

Chap 5, Two Versions of the Same Song.

Serena

Then he started to play again, and this time I recognised the intro of the song - that beautiful beginning of the cover version that had grabbed my attention the first time I had heard it. I was blown away - especially since he did not seem to be following the music sheet. As he moved further into the song, my mouth gaped and he laughed again.
“Wow, that’s amazing” I said.
“Thanks.”
Only then did it hit home that Paul was a musician in a band, while I was just some girl who sang in the shower and occasionally in my friend’s living room.
“Now your turn" he said.

Author interview: Lisa Day author of The Stepbrothers

1) What is your book about?
It’s about two stepbrothers. George was the oldest of the two. George was very cruel to Clint. Every opportunity he found he saw that Clint either got blamed for something he didn’t do, or actually caused him pain. What George didn’t think about was that some day Clint would grow up. When Clint did become a man he had a mission. He promised to seek revenge against George. Clint bided his time. When George announced his pending marriage Clint finds the prefect chance. Clint decides to kidnap the bride-to-be. A sweet innocent young woman. He intends to ruin the woman to hurt George. Clint didn’t count on Samantha being her own woman. And he certainly didn’t see his best friend falling for her.

...What no one considered was how George would react.

2) How did you come up with the idea for your book?
Having A stepsister myself allowed for tho know how mean step-siblings can be...Just kidding Sis...
My sister and I get along fine.. well we did until you asked the question.

3) What strange writing rituals do you have?
You mean like when I dance around the yard naked and the neighbors call the police, kinda thing? OH you mean when writing eh... nope one a one.

4) Is your writing style similar to any well-known writers? If so, which one(s)?
Can’t really say after they stop laughing they’d probably sue me for damages for mentioning any similarity between them and me.

5) Who is your Muse?
Well let’s see there’s Mickey, Minnie, Stuart Little or of course my childhood favorite Mighty Mouse. What muse not mouses...ooops silly me!

6) What are your hobbies?
I know this one. I like to create bead jewelry. And lately, I have been designing hats.

7) What are some writing goals for the future?
To bring world peace through my writings ...ok ok... even I can’t go there... 1. To stop the voices inside my head. 2. To sell books and make lots of money or at least a few dollars here and there.

8) What was the most difficult thing you have learned being a writer?
That I have no idea what I’m doing. But I am having fun doing it. A nice trade off don’t you think?

9) What are you reading at the moment?
‟How to answer blog questions and not sound like a fool.”.. Maybe I need to re-read?

Disclaimer l:
I believe if you can’t enjoy what your doing then don’t bother doing it. Then again I can say things like that because I retired. I really feel for those writers with much more to offer than I that must work outside the industry to provide a living for their family or themselves. Any writer works hard, but a self-published ones hardest of all. Kudos to them.

Disclaimer II:
Warning: my heroes are never the typical kind a guy. Their alpha-males who are domineering, stubborn, and sometime salvageable.

Author interview: Jessica Kong, A Lost Kitten

Jessica A. Kong lives in Somerset, New Jersey with her loving husband of twenty years and teenage triplets. She is an avid reader of fantasy, futuristic, and paranormals. When she is not reading she enjoys arts and craft, puzzles, crocheting, and video games. A Lost Kitten is Jessica’s debut novel. She is currently working on the second installment to the Sea-anan Saga entitled, “A Kitten’s Tale”.

1. When did you know you wanted to be a writer? I began to dabble in the art of writing during High School. I was a fan of the then popular singing boy group and created short stories about meeting them. My friends all loved the plots, characters, and dialogue even though I felt the sentence structure needed help.

2. As an indie author, what has been the most difficult part about being a writer? The most difficult part for me is marketing. I would rather write and edit my book than market it. But I know without marketing no one would know who I am.

3. Who are the authors who inspire you? That’s easy. Nora Roberts, Ann Rice, and Christine Feehan.
4. Do you plan/sketch your scenes before you write, or do you wing it? I write outlines of my story then go back and flesh them out.

5. Do you start writing your scenes as dialog or plot? Both. While I’m writing my outline, if my character has something to say then I jot the dialog down. If they are only doing something then I write that. I would go back and flesh it out when the rest of the story comes to me.
6. Please tell us more about the universe in which your book is set? My book is set in our universe and beyond, in other words, this dimension we live in. In my book, our dimension is called Guildhall. In a distant section of Guildhall, mixed breeds of felines have built a peaceful empire. This empire is under attack, as well as all of Guildhall by a tyrant bent on ruling Guildhall and all the other dimensions.

7. Who are your favorite characters in the book? John McCall. I love all the members of the Ruling Clan of Sea-ana. The Ruling Clan is made up of three families that are not related. Each family goes through hardship, starting with the parents, that each member becomes loyal and faithful to one another. Their bonds are strengthened because of all the hardships they endured over the years, creating one large family and a force to be reckoned with.
8. Tell us more about the book’s them? My book’s themes are family loyalty, love, faith, racial prejudice-yes aliens have that issue too-finding one’s soulmate, and the consequences of war.

9. How did you come up with the idea for your book? I watch a lot of movies and read a lot of books that give me a lot of crazy dreams. And like all writers, I keep my notebook on my bedside table for the more interesting dreams.

10. What’s next on your agenda? I am working on establishing a fan base. I would love to hear from my fans through their reviews of A Lost Kitten and by visiting my Facebook and Goodreads pages and leaving me comments. They can also twitter me. I am also working on the next Sea-anan installment, which I plan to release next year.

Author interview: Brenda Perlin author of Home Wrecker

What is the working title of your book?

Home Wrecker

Where did the idea come from for the book?

The original idea I had was to write about the fraudulent wedding business while I was a stressed-out nailing biting bride-to-be. The story altered after fifteen some odd years when this married woman found herself a boyfriend.

What genre does your book fall under?

This is a “true life” story but I call it fiction to protect my reputation (not really) and from having more people come after me than already have.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

You don’t even want to know!!!! Let’s just say it was years in the making!

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Honestly I haven’t compared my story to any other writers but I liked that in my interview with Wiz (Mark Barry) made a lovely little comparison of my writing to Elizabeth Wurtzel’s of “Prozac Nation” fame. He also mentioned Woody Allen’s movie Manhattan...Wow!!! I am going to take that and run

Who or What inspired you to write this book?

All the credit really should go to my ex-husband. Had he not put so much pressure on me to do something....anything...I would not have started writing my story. Also I have him to thank for spreading all the nasty rumors about me all over the web. Had he just sat back and let fate run it’s course there would not have been a “Home Wrecker.”

What else about your book might pique the reader's interest?

Well, the drama still continues. Hurry up and read Home Wrecker because I am now working on a revision and hope for many good changes and new stories. Also, stay tuned for a second book in the series called Home Wrecker Redemption! I do share a lot of naughty secrets. But you will have to read the booK to find out what they are.
