Three 99p short story collections by Val McDermid

Gunpowder Plots - book cover
A bonfire night trio of short stories from bestseller Val McDermid

Published on: 01/11/2013

Available in ebook for the first time ever, this trio of classic crime short stories by Sunday Times number one bestseller, Val McDermid – HeartburnSneeze for Danger,The Consolation Blonde -  shows the early twists and turns that Val now uses in her bestselling crime fiction.

In Heartburn, a traditional bonfire night turns deadly when revenge is in the air. In Sneeze for Danger, a killer is unmasked by unfortunate means, and in The Consolation Blonde, a misunderstanding turns a bestselling author to crime…

‘Very smart and memorable . . . both stories are great reminders of a time when McDermid was sharpening her teeth on the crime fiction genre and the great writer she was to become . . . an excellent aperitif before the next McDermid novel’

Val McDermid’s Wire in the Blood series continues

10 October 2013

Crime writer and former tabloid reporter Val McDermid has written 30 books, including recently one for children.

But it is her novels featuring characters Tony Hill and Carol Jordan, which she is best known for, after they were adapted for ITV’s Wire in the Blood series.

Cross and Burn is the latest and eighth book in the series.

McDermid tells the BBC’s Nick Higham how she often has to “re-group” in between her Wire in the Blood novels by writing other stories.

My Granny is a Pirate

New Writing North brings Val McDermid’s children’s picture book My Granny is a Pirate to communities throughout Durham and beyond in October

New Writing North is delighted to announce that its touring production of Val McDermid’s My Granny is a Pirate will be visiting communities centre and libraries across County Durham during October 2013. Commissioned by the Durham Book Festival, playwright Carina Rodney and director Annie Rigby have turned McDermid’s debut outing into children’s literature into a rip-roaring, piratical musical adventure suitable for under-6s and their families. Granny’s high-seas shenanigans are brought to life on-stage by a talented cast of actors and musicians from Sage Gateshead. Workshops in crafts and music will also be available for small pirates in Durham venues before the show.

The tour starts with a premiere at Gateshead Old Town Hall on 5 October.

In addition to venues throughout County Durham, the production can also be seen at Newcastle Central Library, Hexham Library, Darlington Central Library and Hindmarsh Hall, Alnmouth. To find a venue near you go to the Granny Pirate website at www.grannypirate.com for the most up-to-late listings and information about where to book the workshops.

Saturday 12 October 10.30am: Val will attend the performance of My Granny is a Pirate at Durham town hall as part of core Durham Book Festival Programme and will be available to sign books afterwards.

Cross and Burn – Advance Copy Review

Advance Copy Review…

Cross and BurnNew Tony Hill / Carol Jordan book Coming in October 2013

First of all, thank you to the author and publishers for the advance copy of this novel via netgalley. I was overjoyed to receive it as I’m a long time fan of Tony Hill and indeed all books from Ms McDermid. My beautiful Hardback copy remains on pre- order. Hey, Bookshelf OCD. Can’t have a missing one from the collection…

So, the latest instalment finds Tony and Carol at odds in the aftermath of “The Retribution”..meanwhile Paula Mcintyre takes front and centre as she takes on the case of a missing friend…and also begins the hunt for a killer alongside her new Boss, someone she is not sure of. Paula can’t resist getting Tony involved, this must mean that Carol will not be far behind….surely?

I’m used to a high standard from these novels – I will admit to some slight concern about what would come next, The Retribution having had such an emotive storyline for those of us who are fans of the Carol/Tony pairing…and leaving us with such huge consequences for their relationship. How could she top that I wondered? I kept the faith though and my faith was more than justified. Here we have not only a top notch mystery as usual but a wonderfully written continuation of our favourite characters ongoing story.
