A comment about solarpunk

Doctorow's Walkaway, Demon and Freedom(TM) by Daniel Suarez, Bruce Sterling's The Caryatids, and Woman on the Edge of time by Marge Piercy, are some of the best solarpunk I've ever read. Ernest Callenbach's Ecotopia novels, and Poul Anderson's "Maurai" universe, are also excellent. For nonfiction, this by Eric Hunting is probably the best: https://medium.com/@erichunting/solar...
Unfortunately, the "solarpunk" genre tends to attract two very different cultural types. The good kind is high-tech but Kropotkinian and decentralist. The bad kind likes pictures of brutalist architecture with plants growing on the outside.

The Undeclared Condominium: The USSR As Partner in a Conservative World Order

My latest research paper at C4SS. From the Intro:
Although the Right has typically framed the Soviet Union and “International Communism” as an aggressive and subversive revolutionary force, the reality is — at the very least — considerably more nuanced. In fact, it would be more accurate to describe the USSR’s relations with the West over most of its history as collusive: it has facilitated capitalist states’ repression of revolutionary forces far more than it has backed such forces.

No, Stossel. The Pilgrims Were Starved by a Corporation, Not by Communism.

For the first time in I don't know how many years, Reason hasn't run Stossel's ass-brained piece about how communism almost killed the Pilgrims but teh private proppity saved them. I'm not sure why. But I'm continuing the annual tradition of posting my response:

Tantura: Birth of a Nation

Watch this to put high-sounding Israeli rhetoric about "standing against barbarism" and "the most moral army in history" in perspective.
It's a clip of excerpts from interviews with Israeli veterans of the Nakba, in which they confess to crimes against humanity.
From the independent film Tantura, about the Palestinian village of that name that was erased in 1948.
