#BookReview: The Seeing Place by Aziza Eden Walker

The Seeing Place takes dares to pair an older, financially independent woman with a younger male who’s struggling to make ends meet. To boot, the heroine holds the hero’s next career step in her hands. I found this combination to be a refreshing change from the norm.

Set in Cape Town, South Africa, and centred around the world of theatre, the story stays true to the modern African entertainment scene. I could relate with the story and the setting. The main characters are not stereotypical as the author takes an angle that’s not often explored – i.e. a powerful, financially stable woman who has power over the hero.
The characters are the strongest aspect of this story. Both the hero and heroine are well-rounded with strong backgrounds that form the foundation of their personalities and aspirations. They celebrate modern-day South Africa without being cliché or whitewashed. They have vices that add to the story and help the reader appreciate their growth over the course of the story.

The cover has an artsy appeal and a very African character, which will attract a certain crop of African readers. However, it does not convey romance and may, therefore, be passed up by non-African romance readers.

Bear's Shadow is Book 2 in the Vendetta Series. The story thrusts us right into the life abuse that Nikki, the heroine, is enduring at the hands of her husband. She is able to escape, and in her attempt to get help, she ends up in Bret's nightclub.

Even though, Nikki and Bret haven't met before, Nikki has history with Bret's wolf pack family. Despite the years of abuse, Nikki's inner strength hasn't completely died and it comes out in her stubbornness and sense of determination.

Bret is a gentle giant and I liked him very much. He is a beta in the pack, but he's still a bear, so his gentleness and caring was sweet. The romance between Nikki and Bret is likewise sweet and develops evenly over the course of the story.

The story is quite dark, dealing with some heavy stuff like spousal abuse, sex trafficking and general violence. For a 140-paged book, I thought the story made a good attempt in dealing with these issues within a romance setting.

One main issue I had with the story was the level of focus on Nikki's husband. I'm usually not the biggest fan of books that start with the heroine still with her (soon-to-be) ex. In this case, it was understandable, because the husband is an integral part of the plot and even gets some scenes written in his POV. While it was interesting to read the scenes in his POV, I didn't think this was necessary. The main question I had about his motivation is answered through dialogue in a scene written in Nikki's POV.

There was also one issue that raised a brow. Nikki's ex had been watching the wolf pack for days and somehow didn't realise they were shifters. I found this odd. While the author mentions that they shifters have been discrete, their actual shifting seemed to have happened without any special precautions taken, so I would have expected someone watching the place closely to notice.

I would also have liked to see a few little more scenes of Nikki and Bret, which would have upped the sexual tension.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and would likely check out the Book 1.

Anyone who knows me could tell you, I am a friendly kind of person, never met a stranger and take up conversations anywhere at any time. I work hard, and my mind never seems to shut down, as I wake up often in the middle of the night with ideas pouring out and demanding to be dealt with. Of course that means much of my books were written in the middle of the night.
I grew up and still live in the great state of Texas where everything is bigger, where we have warm weather and a central location. I love my state, my town, and my family, which includes my four sons, my significant other, and many friends as well.

I have thoroughly enjoyed writing the books that are currently available and hope you will enjoy reading them just as much. And of course, there will be many more stories to come.

My Review

I'm a sucker for second chance romance, especially when it involves a married couple - in this case and married and divorced couple.

In order to fulfil a promise to do a book signing appointment at the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, Grace risks a ride in bad weather with Graham who happens to be going to Philly for Christmas. They have an accident in the town of Mirror Lake, where without the distractions of 'life' their passion re-ignite, and they are forced to confront their past mistakes, their fears and their possible futures.

I enjoyed the book owing to Ms Liasson's fluid writing style, which made this short story and a super fast read (I'm actually surprised at how quickly I completed it).

This book is so short that anyone can sneak in a read during the busy holiday period. A good one for anyone who is looking for a the magic of second chance romance.
