What, How, Why: Cheri L. R. Taylor

CheriWHAT?

Falling Down Girl, the first novel in a series, about a woman trying to create something new in her life after it doesn’t look the way she thought it would. Her 67 year old mother is a wild eccentric, enjoying a hearty dating life, while our 30-something protagonist spends most nights with her cat—who doesn’t even seem to like her.

WHY?

My first novel, Leaving Walloon, was loosely based on some of the experiences of my childhood with my very difficult family situation. It’s heavy duty....

What, Why, How: Roberta F. King

Roberta

WHAT?

I write mostly nonfiction. I’m a Leo, an only child and a Boomer, so therefore I think I’m endlessly interesting and need to tell you all about it. Most everything I’ve written is based on my life. I’m experimenting with hybrid pieces—fiction that is born from nonfiction, but has a fictional twist or more desirable outcome. I’d like to write true, pure fiction some day, but am still waiting for that compelling plot or imperfectly interesting character to appear in my head.

I enjoy writ...

What, Why, How: Caroline Maun

img01WHAT?

I am a poet and a scholar of American poetry, particularly focusing on a neglected group of early- to mid- twentieth century women poets who created an outpost of modernist poetic practices and followed innovativestrategies for their poetry after modernism’s force had shifted. They are less-known now often because of circumstances (poverty, trauma, and/or illness) that prevented them from fully participating in the critical marketplace during developmental stages of their careers; neve...

When Writing Takes Over Your Life

writingWould you be surprised to know that much of your writing work is done in places other than at your desk or computer?

You know your writing has taken over your life when:

You idly roam the supermarket, not because you left your shopping list on the counter at home, but because you’re puzzling over plot. You toss and turn at night, not because your credit card bill is growing while your hours are being cut, but because your characters are stuck in a rut. You are in the back seat of a nice, big...

What, Why, How: Matt Orlando

Morlando

WHAT?

My current project is a Young Adult Sci-fi trilogy called Askers Well. The story centers on 17-year-old Brenn Bailey, who is trying to reacclimate herself back into home life after spending three years in a city-run behavioral rehabilitation center. However, the town’s leader, and a time portal known as Askers Well, put a damper on Brenn’s plans to live a simple, unassuming life. I wrote Book 1, Askers Well, during National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) 2014 and plan to draft Book 2...

Love and Loss – The only permanence we know

radiant vestiges - loss and love

Each loss evokes all losses. We long for permanence, for our children to remaincuteand lovable, for our parents to never leave us, and for our loves to always stand by our sides. Lifeis constant change, however, and every change represents a loss of what there was before. Fall has become a difficult time for me. Four years ago today I lost my eldest child to suicide. Two years ago on October 31, I lost my mother.

So, I have a clear understanding of life’s impermanence, yetin a strange way, I...
