Devil’s Food Cake and White Lies

a mother and her modern blender

My motherhad anelectric mixer with a rotating bowl that blended her cakes into creamy smoothness, and she always let me lick the bowl clean. All that yummy raw batter.

Shehad nothing but contempt forbox cakes: “Mrs. So-and-So made one of those cakes from a box for the party. It tasted terrible.”box cakes

I asked her what terrible tasted like. “Chemicals,” she said. I was quite impressed with herknowledge.

To my mother, box cakes were a sign of laziness. Youmadea cake “from scratch” for yourfamily, wi...

What, Why, How: Erin Rolfson

WHAT?

I’m plodding my way through the first draft of my first novel.

It’s historical fiction (stay with me, it gets more exciting) set in Renaissance Italy. A young woman’s father disappears in the middle of the night, along with several other merchants. She suspects foul play but the local authorities don’t believe her. She forms a group with several other concerned women who take it upon themselves to go, find, and rescue these men. When they do find them it is not only their lives at sta...

What, Why, How: Diana Rubino

Diana Rubino is here to answer 3 basic questions about creativity for my series titledWhat, Why, How!

A curious writer - Diana RubinoAt the Library for the Study of George Washington, Mt Vernon, Virginia

WHAT?

The one-word description of me is ‘curious.’ I hesitate to say ‘nosy’ but ‘curious’ implies the burning desire to learn, and ask ‘why?’ as often as ‘why not?’ So ‘why not’ dedicate at least half my life to a passion that gives me a chance to make a living at it, writing? Coupled with my passion for history, I decided...

Voices of Victims Need to Be Heard

file000832426847

Day five into my iRead Blog Tour, I was wowed by aninsightful review of In the Context of Love from A Splendid Messy Life. Blogger Jenn begins:

Stories of women who have suffered sexual abuse have been at the forefront of media recently. How do we empower these women to find strength within darkness? How do we ensure that they are heard? Those are questions that Linda Sienkiewicz has us think about in her debut novel, In the Context of Love.

What, Why, How: Kate Dolan

Writer Kate Dolan is here to answer 3 basic questions about creativity for my series titledWhat, Why, How!

Kate Dolan, writer with a big sense of humorWHAT?

Oh geeze, what don’t I write about? On my blog, The Bro Chick, I write in the voice of a twenty-something bro chick (i.e., myself) stumbling through life and the ups and downs that come along with it. This can range from learning to think in ‘we’ terms when you enter your first serious relationship, to how to survive being hungover at work. I really love to make people laugh; it’s...
