Book Review: Periodic Rise: Unveiling the Darkness by E Brad Smith

Title: Periodic Rise Series: Unveiling the Darkness #1 Author: E Brad Smith Publisher: Rapid Mountain Publishing Release Date: July 22nd, 2020 Your past has a way of coming back to haunt your future … At a young age, Todd O’Brien’s life went spiralling out of control. In the midst of a savage beating, he became a helpless victim. With each sting of the belt, he watched his life slowly fade, and in a desperate attempt to save himself, he made a rash decision that changed his life. Even today, that one horrific event continues to play out in Todd’s mind. He can still feel the helplessness, the fear, and the vivid pain of being bullied and abused. That day and his resulting four years in juvenile detention have shaped him into the man we find today— one who is strong, determined, and who sees the world with a jagged edge. Years later, Todd manages to meet the woman of his dreams. Gail brings the light back into his life and they begin to build a life together, marrying and having two children. But will their peaceful existence be threatened when Todd’s tragic past resurfaces, returning the turmoil to his life? Will their family and the community be strong enough to endure what the future unveils? Or will it be ripped away by the one intent on destroying them? Grab your copy of Periodic Rise: Unveiling the Darkness on Amazon!   ~ Review ~   Periodic Rise is a wonderful book about bullying, the effects it has on people, and the consequences of our actions. Sometimes we don’t know what people are facing at home or why they bully, but it will always affect someone. It is important to always remember that we must deal with the consequences of our actions, even if we don’t mean to have something happen. Sometimes what we think will just be words or a harmless punch or two ends up costing us something much more. This book was written well and allowed me to dive into the scenes and feel as though I was right there with the characters. It has been a long time since I’ve cried while reading a book and one part had me crying like a baby. As a mom I feel like I was able to connect with the characters and the hardships they were going through. I think the book does a great job of showing what bullying does to not only a person but to a community. It is also important to listen to people who are being bullied and to step in and help whenever we can. So much heartbreak can be adverted if only we stop and listen.   ~ Rating ~       Stay You & Happy Reading,

Book Review: Big Pickle by JJ Knight

Title: Big Pickle Author: JJ Knight Genre: Fiction, Satire, Romance Publisher: Tantor Audio Release Date: April 25th, 2020 Format: Audiobook Pages: 316 They call me Big Pickle. It’s not what you think. (Although that’s true too.) I happen to be the oldest Pickle in the family deli business. And we have the best salami. Take that one however you like. But when my father announces the franchise will go to the most profitable of the three brothers, I learn that even though I’m the eldest Pickle, I’m dead last. I hightail it to Texas to see what’s happened to my restaurant, only to find a sassy little spitfire named Nova Strong in charge. She’s amazing. She’s sexy. She runs our deli like she owns it. But despite the way we nearly melt the permafrost in the industrial freezer, I have to control myself. Nova thinks I'm a new employee. She has no idea I’m only there to spy. Or that I'm her boss. As I get to the bottom of why my franchise is failing, I desperately need to know one thing: Is Nova Strong everything wrong with my deli, or everything right for me? Grab your copy of Big Pickle on Amazon! ~ Review ~ Jace Pickle is the oldest son in a family of deli owners. He has the money, the women, and a carefree attitude. His deli is doing well and he is off living his life to the fullest. Then his dad announces that he will be putting the Pickle sons to the test. He launches a competition to see which son’s deli can make the highest revenue through the end of the year. The prize? Control over the entire Pickle franchise. But when the numbers come in, Jace learns that his deli isn’t doing well and may be on the brink of bankruptcy. How did his deli get in such bad shape? Jace doesn’t know but he is headed to Texas to go undercover and see what is going on. Nova is determined to make sure that her life stays on track while also keeping Austin Pickle, a deli in the Pickle franchise, open. The manager is gone, she doesn’t have access to the books, and her boss, Jace Pickle, refuses to return her phone calls. Somehow she makes it work but she doesn’t know how much longer she can keep things up. But when a new hire, Jason, strides in and gets a job because he is friends with the owner, she is not happy. I’m reviewing the audiobook version of this book. The two narrators, Chris Chambers and Loretta Rawlins, do a wonderful job of bringing this story to life. The book is written with alternating chapters dedicated to each Jace and Nova so having two narrators allowed me to connect with the story better. I also enjoyed the parts where Jace’s character would talk directly to the readers. It added an extra element that made me smile as I felt like I was part of the story too. With the addition of pickle puns like “He’s apparently a really big dill” and “I’m done dilling with you,” Big Pickle provided me an entertaining story. The chemistry that is brewing between Nova and Jace is undeniable and provides us with a lot of hot moments. Sometimes relationships are like making bread, if they don’t have the right ingredients they won’t rise. So you’ll have to read (or listen) to Big Pickle to see where the story goes. ~ Rating ~ Stay You & Happy Reading,

They coast through life, blissfully unaware of how their time is ticking away. I wasn’t like most people. I welcomed death, wanted her to take me away from the prison I called life, but she refused. I tried twice only to survive. And then, when I thought I had nothing left it came. A reason to live. Rex was a small, unexpected ray of light my world of darkness that blossomed into a beam of sunshine. I thought, maybe this was why Death didn’t take me. Maybe she knew that if I held on a little longer things would turn around. But the third time Death came to my door wasn’t by choice. Someone else brought her, and I fear this time she might take me. Rex Being the son of a country star sucks. My parents are never around, I move every year or so, and I have no real friends. Everyone around me has an agenda. Everyone except Piper Lovelace. I can’t get that girl to notice me. Trust me I’ve tried. Thankfully, fate stepped in and gave me the break I needed. I’ve got her attention, now I need her to give me a chance. Amazon | Goodreads ~ About the Author ~ Bailey B is an up and coming New Adult author. She lives in Lehigh Acres Florida with her husband, twin girls, and two fur babies. She enjoys (but doesn’t get to take part in because of her crazy daughters) the simple things like Disney+ binge watching, Netflix romcoms, reading and sleeping. She reads two to three books a week and thinks if narwhal’s are real animals then unicorns might be too. Amazon | Twitter | Facebook | Goodreads | Website | Instagram a Rafflecopter giveaway “Stop,” I mumble, my smile growing harder to contain. There’s a playful energy building between us, one I wish he’d act on. The corner of Rex’s lips twitch as he tries to hold a straight face. “Stop what?” “Looking at me. It’s weird.” My heart hammers in my chest, beating against my flesh like a caged animal desperate to get out. I lick my lips. Why? I don’t know. Apparently, my tongue has a mind of its own and wants his attention. Rex’s gaze flickers down to it for a full second then finds my eyes again. He shifts, turning his body towards me, leaning an inch closer. I can do this. If he can touch me, he can kiss me. What’s the worst that can happen? I don’t know, a debilitating panic attack where you seize up and die? Meh, I’ll risk it. “I can’t help it,” Rex says breaking eye contact to take a sip of his water. “You’re beautiful.” Butterflies swarm in my stomach. I don’t know how he’s doing this to me. I feel alive again. Maybe this is why Death didn’t take me. Maybe she knew Life had a plan and something good was coming. Rex could be that something good. I roll my eyes, a nervous laugh escaping me. “Yeah. Okay.” Rex leans back against the arm of the couch, his brows knitting together. “Can I ask you something?” Oh gosh, this is it. He’s going to ask to kiss me like a true gentleman. Yes! The answer is yes! “Maybe.” He chuckles, and the sound sends the butterflies into overdrive. So much flipping and thumping inside me. I can’t take the anticipation anymore. I’m ready.

Amazon | Twitter | Facebook | Goodreads | Instagram | Website ~ Giveaway ~ a Rafflecopter giveaway ~ Excerpt ~   Greta Meier dashed down the carpeted hallway of Swift Financial, ignoring the agony of power walking in three-inch heels. That pain was minuscule compared to the dread pooling in her stomach. She’d lost track of time. Again. Sure, she’d managed to fix the in-house software issue but, meanwhile, had forgotten the new client meeting. Glancing at her tiny gold Rolex, she groaned. Less than five minutes to make it to the other end of the building. She could picture her boss’s disappointed face, made all the more stressful because it was her father. The image had Greta quickening her pace to a near sprint. Rounding the final corner, she sighed. The large glass doors were propped open. Relief calmed some of her anxiety. She wasn’t late. Inside the conference room, her assistant Rae motioned to the empty seat next to her. Greta nodded and skated alongside the outermost edges of the table, wishing she were smaller, invisible. She hoped no one would notice her near tardy arrival. The last thing she wanted was to come across as the empty-headed daughter of the boss. Someone who’d gotten the internship through nepotism. Therefore, any misstep ate at her confidence like termites to wood. She took her seat next to Rae and tried to squash her rampant doubts. Running a shaky hand over her chignon, she made sure every hair was in place. “Where’s Allen?” Greta glanced around the table while needlessly straightening the collar of her pale, pink blouse. Realizing she was fidgeting, putting her anxiety on full display, she stilled and met Rae’s gaze. She handed the client folder Greta hadn’t had time to open and sighed. “Another virus was detected on Blake’s computer. He demanded we fix it, like yesterday. Allen’s working on it.” Greta accepted the portfolio, her worry shifting to annoyance. She didn’t want to talk about her ex-fiancé, much less be reminded he was in-house counsel. Before their breakup, they hardly ran into each other at work. Now Blake kept inventing problems with his PC and contacting the IT department. Rae and Allen found it hilarious, but Greta despised the drama. It made her and Blake appear unprofessional. Refusing to meet Rae’s playful smile, Greta peered down the table at her father. His back was to a large window with its blinds pulled. The leaves from the giant elm and oak trees swayed in a lazy breeze, helping to block Michigan’s hot summer sun from the room. She’d love to be out there, relaxing in the shade, enjoying her summer and free of stress. Her gaze zeroed back in on her father, and the usual mixture of pride and discontent filled her. She understood he only wanted the best for her, but sometimes his rigidness was stifling. Carrying her father’s expectations, and his disappointment of her, was a heavy burden to shoulder. Thankfully, he hadn’t noticed her near-late arrival time. There’d be no displeased glances, no lectures concerning punctuality. He appeared distracted, deep in conversation with a man she assumed was a new client. She gave an inward sigh of relief, allowing some of her distress to dissolve. Father’s career talks turned back the clock, and suddenly she was closer to seven than twenty-seven. Enjoying the reprieve, she relaxed into her seat and studied the client. He sat sideways, elbow propped on the table, large hand covering most of his face as he talked with her father. There was something familiar in the set of the client’s broad shoulders and his inky black hair. Inexplicably, her heart began to race. Watching him filled her with trepidation and an unexpected yearning. Her father faced the room, pulling her gaze from the stranger to the wall clock. Yup, ten on the dot. A meeting never started late. She glanced back at the client and choked on an exhale, her heart plummeting. He’d dropped his hand and was facing forward. It can’t be him. Her heart skipped with joy. Then promptly flooded with dread. “You okay?” Rae whispered. Her voice sounded far away, wrapped in fog. Greta couldn’t answer because the client’s familiar icy-blue gaze had locked on hers. His eyes widened in recognition. He was clean-shaven, and today his hair was neat and combed back, but there was no mistaking him. Jacob. He had one of those striking faces, impossible to forget. The memories of the way those bedroom eyes had heated as he’d taken in her naked body, or how those full lips had ravished her, made him unforgettable. However, she wished he’d slip from her memory and the conference room. Whatever his reason for being here wouldn’t be good for her. “Good morning. Let me introduce Mr. Jacob Grimm.” Hearing his name, he turned toward her father, allowing her to breathe. Rae nudged Greta, probably waiting for an answer. Too bad. She was admitting nothing. “He runs Rework, a business repairing and refurbishing antiques. We’re taking it to the next level,” continued her father. “He plans on opening a brick-and-mortar shop in Detroit and developing a better online presence.” Business owner? No, no, no. There had been some mistake. He wasn’t supposed to be sitting at her father’s conference table. Jacob was a deliveryman. He worked for his uncle. It’s what he told her at her mother and stepfather’s home. So, why wasn’t he lifting heavy things and breaking promises? Greta flipped through the file Rae had given her. Successful was an understatement. His client base was impressive, as were the big names in the dossier. Stapled to the back of the folder was a copy of Jacob’s license. Foolish woman. Hadn’t her father always told her to come to a meeting prepared? Had she even glanced at the file, she’d have recognized Jacob in an instant. Weeks had passed, but that foolish, impulsive afternoon was far from forgotten. As her father addressed the room, Greta focused on Jacob’s picture. She found it safer than facing the actual man. They’d only spent a couple of hours together, but his wicked full mouth and penetrating gaze had been impossible to forget. Along with his magical ability to destroy all her restraints. Greta still couldn’t quite believe how easily her inhibitions had fled in the company of a perfect stranger. She closed the folder and rubbed her sweaty palms on her pleated linen skirt. She stared at her father and tried to concentrate on his words, though he could’ve been speaking another language and she wouldn’t have noticed. There was no way she could swallow her embarrassment and work with Jacob. Not even for a day, let alone a week or more. Her pulse thudded in her ears. What if he bragged about his one-night-stand with the boss’s daughter? Father would kill her. Not literally, but professionally. He wouldn’t want the family name smeared with tawdry office gossip. He’d promised, after she graduated with her Master’s in Web Development, she’d take over Swift’s websites and handle the clients needing web development help. Would the offer still stand if he learned of her history with Jacob? So much for proving herself with a summer internship. Greta wanted to weep at the disappearance of her imagined stellar portfolio. Swift Financial would have been wonderful on her resume. Focus. I need to focus and get control of the situation. Leaning in, she whispered to Rae, “I need to go. Would you and Allen mind handling this account? I’ll owe you one.” “What’s wrong?” Rae’s forehead furrowed in concern. That question was too big to answer now. Later. “Will you do this for me?” Rae bit her lip. “I’ll try, but you know your father wants you in charge of web designing.” Yes, I know. Hopefully I’ll come up with a stellar excuse to wiggle out of the Rework contract. She’d worry about it later and mouthed a thank you and gathered her papers. When there was a pause in the main conversation, she addressed the room. “I’m sorry. There’s been a mistake. Allen Carnaby will handle this account with Mrs. Caitlin.” She stood. “I’ll find him.” Her father’s stern voice stopped her. “No, Ms. Meier, the account is yours and Mrs. Caitlin’s. I have another project in mind for Mr. Carnaby.” His tone brooked no argument. Darn it. There went her quick and painless getaway. She nodded. To argue was pointless and would only anger her father. Returning to her seat, she glanced covertly at Jacob. He’d lost most of his color and looked like he’d been poked with a cattle prod. Replaying the exchange, she realized she’d been addressed by her last name. Jacob must have caught it, grasped its significance. He appeared rattled. Good. Maybe he didn’t want to share their secret any more than she did. Thank goodness. It would save her from her father’s wrath. Next challenge—squashing her lingering thrill at seeing Jacob again.   Stay you,

I received a Book Excellence Award!

I am incredibly excited to announce that I have been recognized as a Book Excellence Award Finalist for my book, The Lurking Collection in the Anthology category. This is the first award that this collection has won and I’m so honored to have been selected because I know there were hundreds of books entered into the competition. The book was released in September 2018 and is a collection of three short stories that I wrote for the award-winning Lurking anthologies with my publisher, CHBB Publishing. Check out the three stories included below: Is the sacrifice worth the reward? The Reluctant Seamstress is an outcast among her people. Cursed to never set foot on land, she swims in the dark depths below the ocean’s surface. Now her life depends on making the perfect suit for her master. The only problem is that everyone knows human flesh is a fickle material. Some family traditions must come to an end. The House on Juniper Lane had always been a mystery. After a family was violently slain within its walls, it quickly became an attraction for teens looking for a thrill. It was just an empty house to Grace. So when the hottest guy in school wanted to take her there, she accepted. It was all fun and games until she woke up tied to a chair. One night will change her life forever. Blind Justice is what she provides. Molly wasn’t going to let blindness stop her from holding psychological criminals accountable for their actions. Now the bodies are piling up and Molly must identify the killer before her own secrets are brought to light and she becomes the next victim. This collection is perfect for fans of horror stories with touches of paranormal and suspense. You can get a copy for yourself on Amazon. If you’ve read this collection already, I would love to hear your thoughts! Be sure to tag #JuniperGrove on social media so I can find your posts! Stay You, Jaidis
