Jacqueline Rhoades Talks Shifter Romance
I recently sat down with the talented Jacqueline Rhoades and asked her all about her shifter romance books. Here's the scoop! If you haven't read her books before, you're in for a treat!
MICHELLE FOX: How did you get started writing? What was your first book?JACQUELINE RHOADES: I can't remember a time when I wasn't daydreaming stories in my head. I wrote my first novel about thirty years ago. It lives in a box under my bed and will remain there until I die. My first published book was Guardian's Grace, followed by Guardian's Hope, and Joy. All three were written before I self-published.
MF: Not only do you and I have books with the same title (great minds, think alike!), we've also both set stories in Appalachia. For me, my grandmother grew up in that area, I lived there briefly as a teen and I knew there was a lot of wilderness there for a pack to call home. What made you choose that area of the country?JR: I do a lot of travelling through those mountains over the years and fell in love with them and the language. The down-hominess and practicality of the dialects and idioms found there appeals to me since my stories are about finding a home and community (pack) as well as the man of your dreams. There's an earthiness that seems to fit with creatures who are so closely connected with nature. Like you, I also needed a place where my Wolvers could hide in plain sight. The added attraction was that those mountains were settled by the Scots-Irish. You'll see why in a minute.
MF: I fell in love with the rich emotion of your stories. Your characters are so real that I cry and laugh with them. How do your stories come to you? Are you meticulously outlining or flying by the seat of your pants, waiting for inspiration to strike?JR: I'm happy to hear I made you laugh and cry. Laughter and heartbreak are part of the human condition and make the story feel more real. Reading your books, I know you feel the same, because I can picture some of myself in your characters. We may write about shifters, but we relate to their humanness (or lack of it).My stories always begin with a fairly typical woman who doesn't see herself as special or beautiful, quite the opposite in some cases, who comes to realize she is both – because true beauty really does come from within.I then put them in a situation and ask myself, "What if?" What if you moved to a lovely little mountain town and found out these friendly people are not what they appear to be as in the Alpha's Mate? Wouldn't you question their motives and your sanity?'I've tried outlining, but it doesn't work for me. I'm a seat of the pants writer because my characters are so real to me they won't always go in the direction I'm heading. When I hit a patch of writer's block, it's usually because I'm not listening to my characters. So far, they've been right, so I don't argue with them too much anymore.
MF: Readers say your stories are something special and unique in paranormal romance (I happen to agree). How did you come up with the idea of the Wolvers. And...do Wolvers celebrate Thanksgiving? If yes, what's on the table?JR: The original story of wulfers or wulvers comes from the Shetland Islands of Scotland. Unlike other werewolves of legend, these creatures weren't bitten and transformed. They were born part man, part wolf. Peaceful creatures, they were known for helping the poor or leading lost travelers to safety. They would, however, fight to protect their own.My Wolvers were born from the legend. Where would they settle when they emigrated from Scotland to America when our country was still young? The Appalachian Mountains, of course! Don't you love it when the pieces all fit together?Yes, they celebrate Thanksgiving, and there'll be whole lot of turkey, ham, and venison, because they're not fond of vegetables. As a matter of fact, there's only one known vegetarian wolver. She lives in the little town of Gilead in the Ozarks. You'll meet her in The Alpha's Daughter.
MF: Haha! I have a vegetarian in my book First Moon! We must be sharing a wavelength! What's your next book about and when can everyone read it?JR: Right now, I'm finishing up New Beginnings, the third book in my contemporary Hidden Mountain series which also takes place in the Appalachians. It'll be published in January. Then it's back to the Wolvers with Wolver's Reward, the third (stand-alone) novel in the second Wolver trilogy. That's a story that's been brewing in my head for quite a while, but since the character is one from The Alpha's Choice, I had to give him time to mature. His day has finally come!

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds--A Halloween Tradition
Every year my family and I go out to the pumpkin patch and then roast the pumpkin seeds once we're done carving our jack 'o lanterns.
They are yummy plain or added to a salad. My personal favorite is a goat cheese-dried cranberry-Cajun roasted pumpkin seed salad with a honey balsmic dressing.
Here's how I roast my pumpkin seeds:
IMPORTANT: Use a low temp on the oven, around 290F.
Ingredients
Seeds of one medium sized pumpkin1 tsp sea salt (try to use the best salt you can)
1 tbsp brown sugar1 tbsp Cajun seasoning
1 1/2 tbsp butter
Instructions
1.Preheat your oven and rinse your seeds.
2.Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix.
3.Roast for roughly 20 minutes, checking frequently to ensure they aren't burning.
They come out of the oven looking something like this...

Does Amazon Understand How Poorly Their Technical Platform Performs? Because They Should.
I sat down today and did a rundown of my book sales for the last several months. I analyzed the ROI of my marketing and looked at what my top sellers were and why. A startling piece of data emerged as I audited the performance of my book catalog.
Amazon's self-publishing portals are one of the biggest barriers to my success.
For the last three months it's been glitch after glitch after glitch. And it hasn't been just me. Oh, no. I am not an isolated case. Hundreds of authors and thousands of books have been affected.
Technical issues happen. Things break. Stuff goes sideways. This is life in the internet age, but things shouldn't always break and stuff shouldn't constantly go sideways.
Everyday, I touch base with my social media networks and find yet another author dealing with a glitch. It doesn't stop!
From the outside looking in, here's what Amazon's self-publishing portals (KDP and other platforms they utilize to distribute books) seem to be designed to do:
-Allow authors to upload ebook files for sale.
-Integrate those ebook files with the retail Amazon.com website so that what is uploaded is delivered to the reader.
-Allocate ebooks to the proper categories based on keywords and categories selected by the author.
-Provide accurate and timely technical support.
-Accurately track and report sales and returns.
And here's what actually happens to an author like me....
August 2015: I was pleased to be invited to write for a Kindle Worlds (KW) launch, but the project ran afoul of Amazon's publishing platform right out of the gate.
Amazon grossly miscategorized my Kindle Worlds book, Furever After, and the fix was slower than watching paint dry.
(For those that don't know, being visible in the right category is one big way readers see your book. Being in the wrong category is the kiss-of-death for a book. Not only that, my book displaced legitimate books that should've been ranking in the top 100 bestseller list for the category my book was stuffed into. There's a cascading effect here, one glitch can damage multiple books.)
September 2015: Amazon failed to send out the updated book file of First Moon that I had uploaded in advance of my Bookbub promotion. This is an ongoing glitch and there's been no fix. There have been discussions among authors about this glitch since the spring with no end in sight.
(They say they fixed my book file by the way, but I had to bug them about it. Why do I have to even ask? Why do I have to spend money to gift the book to readers so they can double-check the file for me? Shouldn't KDP work as intended?)
October 2015: Returns on my preorder don't add up for my new release, Moon's Law. Amazon also sent me a quality flag saying I'm missing a page break when I'm not. When I questioned it, they said the problem was a lack of chapter breaks and a Table of Contents. (Why can't they properly identify what should be black-and-white quality issues? Why is it a different answer every time?)
I also have no idea what book file they will actually distribute. KDP has a bad habit of sending out the wrong book file (as per September). This just happened to a colleague a few days ago, which makes me wonder if KDP is glitching unchecked.
Meanwhile, Amazon also decided to dump a bunch of books into the erotica category just this past week...including children's books and cookbooks. This led me to unpublish seven of my romance books that were shoved into erotica because I don't even want to try and argue with Amazon.
Historically, they're inconsistent in their responses to these purges. It's better to just get rid of the books they seem to think are a problem in the hopes Amazon won't tank the rest of my catalog.
Speaking of inconsistent, in the last twenty-four hours Amazon abruptly reversed their mass mis-categorization of books, returning them to their original categories. The cost to authors is enormous, however.
We lost sales. We lost visibility in very competitive categories, visibility that can cost four figures in advertising fees to achieve. (Pity the author who had a new release or a massive advertising blitz that hit just as their book categories were rearranged.)
Returning books to their previous categories does not give authors a do-over. Instead, we face worse sales ranks and even lower sales volume. We'll have to spend more money to market our way out of the hole Amazon dug for us.
(A quick aside: Amazon has been dithering about what to do with erotica since at least 2012. It's past time to figure out a long term, proactive solution to Amazon's business concerns with erotica. These erratic scorched-earth campaigns hurt their bottom line, too--just think of the man hours and opportunity cost involved in reversing the latest purge.)
Now, if these issues were one-time incidents, I would not be writing this blog post. Unfortunately, these problems have become pervasive, widespread and constant. They undermine everything authors do to earn a living. Even more alarming, the glitches I've outlined here are not the only ones. There are more, they just aren't my stories to tell.
The media misses all of this. Shareholders seem to have no idea. I don't even know if Jeff Bezos understands how profoundly KDP malfunctions on the user side. Do they care? I don't know.
And there's nothing authors can do but hope they have enough readers to turn the tide in the face of all these glitches. This is why reviews and support from readers are so vital. Sometimes it's the only thing authors can count on.
(Also, I laugh hysterically whenever the media says Amazon is going to deliver packages via drones.)
