The Price of Faith by Rob J. Hayes – Review

For those who enjoy gritty, unflinching fantasy, it's precisely what makes this series stand out.

Review: Descent to Azakmar by Michael R. Fletcher

An excellent blend of action, world-building, humor, and heart.

SPFBO Finalist Review: By Blood by Salt by J.L. Odom

This was my favourite of the SPFBO books by quite some distance. It’s a powerful story about outsiders, how they try to fit in, and how they are treated.

Review: Summoned to the Wilds by A.K. Caggiano

The combination of lighthearted romance and quirky humor works perfectly here, and it’s a joy to read. The balance of both elements is refreshing, and it never feels forced, which is often the case with books that mix these genres.

Review: Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djélí Clark

Overall, Dead Cat Tail Assassins is an engaging read with a unique world, entertaining characters, and enough action to keep you hooked. It may take a little time to truly connect with the characters, but the journey is well worth it in my personal opinion.

SPFBO Finalist Review: Gates of Hope by J.E. Hannaford

The plot starts with a classic fantasy trope but quickly deepens into something more complex, balancing humor, action, and reflective moments.

Review: A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher

Overall, A Sorceress Comes Calling is a darker but still immensely enjoyable read, perfect for fans of Kingfisher who are looking for something a bit more serious, with the same delightful character work and unexpected twists that they are known for.

SPFBO Finalist Review: Runelight by J.A. Andrews

Also, Kate and Venn's passively antagonistic friendship . . . I love it!!! I wanna be there for ALL their interactions – to adjudicate, or just laugh. Their banter is witty and engaging, actually all the dialogue is very well done, and that is the best way to get me hooked – I relate more easily to characters through their dialogue.

SPFBO Finalist Review: Wolf of Withervale by Joaquín Baldwin

This year's finalists are all big on their worldbuilding but the stand out so far has been The Wolf of Withervale. The author has obviously spent a huge amount of time and imagination creating the world in which the book is set - from climatic disaster for which biodomes were built.

Review: To Shape a Dragon’s Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose

To Shape a Dragon is an engrossing read that robustly and convincingly tackles some real world issues in a fantastic setting. In so doing, like the best of literature, it holds up a mirror for us to view ourselves in - and to take heed of.
