H Is for Hamunaptra
The A to Z Challenge continues on my blog! At this rate, I’ll probably be wrapping up with Z about the time every other blogger in the world starts up again. I’m having fun though and I hope you are too.
The first thing that comes to my mind for the letter “H” is Hamunaptra, mostly because
I spend entirely too much time cruising eBay and look what I found and HAD to have! It’s only a resin replica of the Key to the Book of the Dead (in the movie) and doesn’t actually open (so no treasure map in...

More First SciFi Reads Tom Corbett Space Cadet
Doing a second column over at USA Today HEA today on what the first science fiction or fantasy novels were that various SF&F authors read. Hop on over and check it out, see if anyone mentioned your favorite!
My Dad gave me a set of theTom Corbett Space Cadetbooks when I was a kid. They weren’t the first science fiction I ever read, but they were the first SF series. Until then the series I’d been reading were more along the lines of Trixie Belden, Nancy Drew, and the Dana sisters. I fell total...

Science Fiction Romance Favorite Lines and Guilty Pleasures
Over at the USA Today/HEA blog I’m featuring two interviews on my SciFi Encounters column – (1) Linnea Sinclair and (2) the husband-and-wife duo that make up “Ilona Andrews” . I always like to know what an author regards as their guilty pleasure (if they own up to one). Mine would probably be nutella, straight from the jar. Not that I’ve ever actually eaten it that way (ahem) of course. Linnea shared that Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream was hers and when I went over to see the website, I could tota...

What Was Your First Science Fiction Read?
I can still remember the moment when I was a kid and I picked this book up from my Dad’s bookcase -Catseyewas the first ever science fiction book I read. I loved it (although I thought it was too short and I always wished there’d been a sequel.) Of course after this, I tracked down every single book by Andre Norton I could find, even the Young Adult and the romances.
I still have most of them. She was my gateway into science fiction. I loved the glimpses of romance that popped up in a few of h...

when Tyema has returned to her office as the ceremonies are complete for the morning and the scribe was so pleased with himself that he’d denied Sahure’s request for an audience. I’m skipping some byplay between Tyema and Jemkhufu...

G Is For Giant Gila Monster Movies
I’m combining my ongoing “A to Z Challenge” with my occasional reviews of old and/or favorite movies. As I’ve said before, when I was a kid, my brother and I would stay up late to watch old SF movies in black and white on the TV. The movies were always much cut up to allow for noisy used car dealer commercials and we sometimes fell asleep before the end.
“The Giant Gila Monster” of 1959 (“Devouring people as if they were flies!”) was one of the favorites of whoever programmed movies at the lit...

F is for Fairies or Flowers or Both
Hmmm, I seem to have a few too many stream of consciousness ideas for my letter “F” in my ongoing attempt to work through the A to Z challenge!
Let’s start with fairies though, since that came to mind first and I had fun playing with a set of Schleich figurines to illustrate this post! They could be fairies or elves or Other, not sure and the company just says “fantasy”, which covers it all, I guess. I take my grandson to the local toy store to get him dinosaurs and other animals for his prete...
