Book Review: APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur-How to Publish a Book by +Guy Kawasaki
I finished reading this two days ago. I went into it feeling confident as an author, and I have navigated the logistics of getting my work on the online retailers in ebook and POD. Even so, I picked up some excellent pro tips in the Author and Publisher sections of APE. The Entrepreneur section was just what I needed—from a practical POV as well as for inspiration. Anyone who's thinking of publishing, traditional or indie, would benefit greatly from this book.

By Others: Liaisons Galantes: A Scientific Romance By David D. Levine
I’m starting a new meme on my site called “By Others”, in which I link to or recommend short stories that I didn’t write but which I think you should read.
My first selection appears at Beneath Ceaseless Skies. Go read this delightful fantasy set in an alternate Paris, where one’s love is manifested by a creature called a galante.

How do I know my vacation is almost over?
Because the (nearly) nine year old, Ella, is inside watching YouTubes instead of frolicking in the pool and enjoying the balmy breezes and sunshine. Wisconsin will be here too soon. Much too soon.

The Original Undermountain Idea Outline
So I was digging through some old documents and ran across a doozy. My original concept for The Undermountain Saga.
This was from December of 2007! Five years ago. I didn’t start writing Undermountain until November of 2010 when my nephew callenged his friends to NaNoWriMo.
So here it is, unedited and uncensored:
Big Foot Underworld
Book 1 is basically an exploration of their world, hinting at a bigger story, but contained within a smaller story arc.
Book 2 picks up with the development of a much bigger story with characters that were hinted at or met briefly in book 1.
Book 3-X tell the story that takes the “kids” through the universes to save not only the Earth, but all life everywhere.
Kids (10 through 18 years old) on camping trip in the mountains stumble upon an injured or trapped Big Foot. They help it to a nearby cave where they are captured by some other big feet.
Turns out the big foot they were following is a kid too, and wasn’t supposed to be out on the surface.
They are taken deep under the Earth into a Big Foot technologically advanced civilization. So advanced that they occupy a galactic civilization. They don’t travel via spaceship very often and never from or to Earth. They have teleportation chambers straight to other places in the galaxy.
They have remained completely undetected by humans for the most part. There radio emissions don’t travel far through the ground and aren’t noticed.
They power their whole civilization using geothermal energy. In fact, the Big Feet are very green and have very low environmental impact.
The few times they have been seen by humans have created many of the mysterious sitings. Yeti, abominable snowmen, Sasquatch.
There are probably a few factions of BF. One favors complete isolation from humans, another wants to establish some sort of relationship to stop them from wrecking the Earth, and the last one wants to just take over the planet and get rid of the humans that resist.
Something has happened recently that has made things more tense. The galactic portals shut down all of a sudden (100 years ago) and they’ve been cut off. They need to investigate, but they have to do it on the surface for some reason and it’s not something they can do subtly.

My friend +Moses Siregar has just published The Children of Wind and Wood, a 50k word preview to his next book. His first novel The Black God's War was an excellent epic fantasy. This takes place in the same world, but isn't a direct sequel. After I post this, I'm going over to pick up my copy for .99!

2012 Year in Review: A Post About Me (as usual)
Not too shabby, really. I wrote and published two novels (Afterlife and Starkiller) and a novella (Shadow of the Oak) and a couple short stories. In addition, I wrote some rather long fragments of two more short stories and a novella. Fragments don’t count, I suppose, but the words do. The best part of all this is that people continue to buy, read, and love them!
In spring I attended the Superstars writing seminar in Las Vegas. Twas excellent. The next one is in May in Colorado. I haven’t decided on that one since I haven’t figured out my schedule for 2013 yet.
This summer I went to Texas for a weekend Million Dollar Outlines seminar with Dave Farland.
Looking ahead, I’ve set some solid goals for 2013.
Write three novels
Write twelve short stories
Attend at least one con (I’ve never been to one)
What are your goals?
Cloudy morning in paradise

Not too shabby, and a huge improvement over Wisconsin. (St. Croix, USVI)
