Variety
I love the range of writing that blogging enables, from long essays to one line link blogs and everything else in between.

The therapeutic potential of blogging
It is often said that the times when you find it most difficult to sit down and meditate are the very times when you need it most. I reckon blogging is the same.
I am facing some challenges at the moment that I know would be helped by blogging about them. But they involve family and I have always been very wary of writing in public about things that directly affect other people.
I know bloggers who have been very courageous in being open about the challenges that they’re facing. I know that their willingness to do so has helped others, including me.
But maybe, even after all this time, I’m just not ready yet…

Sweary place names
Every time I drive down Sodom Lane near my Dad’s house I entertain myself with the thought that there might be a Fuck’em Street somewhere in the world.

A world apart
A small fly accompanied me for much of my journey home from Croatia. I suspect all the way from Italy, but certainly from France. I finally managed to get it to go out an open window while traveling to my Dad’s place in Dorset.
I don’t know what the French or Italian equivalents of “Where the fuck am I?” are, but since saying farewell to my fly friend I have found myself pondering how flies orientate themselves, at what scale, and what the possible consequences of such a drastic displacement might be.

Hell is other people.
Other people are probably the biggest source of frustration and stress in our lives. People who don’t say what we think they should, don’t do what we think they should, aren’t the kinds of people we think they should be.
In our futile attempts to protect ourselves from this frustration and stress we expend huge amounts of energy trying to change other people. Or cut ourselves off from them altogether thereby ending up in our own solitary echo chambers.
And yet the solution is in our own hands, and staggeringly simple.
We can change our minds about them.

Fitting in
Enjoying the company of others is one thing, being worried about what they think of us is quite another.
Does being with others inevitably lead to worrying about what they think of us?
Is this question more pressing online?
