mortisia:

Edgar Allan Poe

born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849 was an American author, poet, editor, and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story, and is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. Read More | Edit | More Edits

just-shower-thoughts:

If you smoke cigarettes you’re entitled to a cigarette break but if you don’t smoke you can’t step outside for a breath of air.

This has always bothered me as a non-smoker.

Real Women Have Curves…So I Must Be Fake!

pandorataggart:

It’s no secret that we feel better when we think we look our best.  Everybody wants to be thought of as “good”…but “good” changes for everybody!  I have multiple piercings and pink hair, which isn’t most people’s cup of tea; ironically, I’m not very into tea, but I know a lot of people who are.

The other day I heard a song called “All About That Bass”.  It’s a catchy little tune, but when I started listening to the lyrics, I wasn’t amused at all!  The long and short of it is big girls are better at sex and “skinny bitches” are evil.  First of all, this assumes that sex is the only thing that matters and the only way to know if you are attractive or not, which I don’t have the time or patience to address now.  No doubt the point is supposed to be that you are perfect, no matter what you look like…but she sure doesn’t allow that to be possible if you are, as she mentions, a size 2.  And, yes, Photoshop is a problem, but they Photoshop EVERYTHING now – even those “real women” adds!

Having grown up in a society that condones eating disorders and praises the waif figure, I understand the very real concern it brings.  If you weren’t into the stick look, there were plenty of exercise options to get you fit: yoga, Pilates, buns of steel, tae bo, etc.  Of course, we aren’t even going to talk about all the plastic surgery options!  As long as you ended up thin, it didn’t matter how it happened.

Because of these past fallacies, I whole-heartedly support the “love who you are” mentality.  It may sound cliché, but Oscar Wilde was right when he said “Be yourself – everyone else is already taken”.  Sadly, this is not how people are choosing to alter perspective.

What started as a pressure to remain thin began to evolve into pure nastiness from those who didn’t have what they thought they wanted.  I got quite upset years ago when a woman on a national talk show announced that girls under a certain size (I think she listed size 6) shouldn’t be allowed to get a job because it only encourages eating disorders.  The reasoning sounds good (the audience loved it!), but how many women would be unemployable simply because they are under 5’ tall?  This was when I first realized that, in order to feel good about yourself, it’s okay to completely devastate another –even if it means taking away their livelihood.  After all, they should have thought of that before they became so skinny!

I started paying attention to my own personal encounters with people.  I often got made fun of for being “bony”, which they usually found “gross”.  I have actually had “playful” death threats (yes, plural!) because I was skinny and the other person didn’t feel that they were.  It was all in good fun, of course…I mean, who doesn’t like to be called a bitch repeatedly?  Fun!

The problem is that these kinds of negative interactions can cause the very problem you are trying to eradicate.  When I get upset – I mean truly upset – I can’t eat.  I simply can’t eat.  Some people are the exact opposite.  This doesn’t make either one better or worse, it just makes us individuals.  It makes us human!

Feeling good about yourself is essential to a happy life, but you don’t have to pull others down to do that.

Silent Movies 101: So you want to watch a silent movie (and what to do about it)

Since day one, my goal at Movies Silently has been to make silent films accessible to casual viewers. However, the topic is so massive that it can be intimidating for newcomers to even get started.
