The Lord of the Rings, written by Oxford professor J.R.R....

The Lord of the Rings, written by Oxford professor J.R.R. Tolkien in the mid-1900s, might just be the single greatest body of literary work from the twentieth century, and one of the greatest mythologies of all time. Countless people have fallen in love with his stories of hobbits, wizards, elves, and evil rings. The complexities behind these closely-drawn tales make this mythology deeply appealing. Delving further into the background of Tolkien’s mind and writings reveals a dragon-horde of rich layers within the stories. This 12 week course has been designed to take students through Tolkien’s three volume epic, exploring the mythical, moral, and linguistic themes of the story. At the same time, they will study Tolkien’s life, in order to understand how his own experiences shaped his writings. By the end, students should be enriched in both mind and heart by these phenomenal works.
