Eighteen-year-old Trinity Marrow may be going blind, but she can see and communicate with ghosts and spirits. Her unique gift is part of a secret so dangerous that she’s been in hiding for years in an isolated compound fiercely guarded by Wardens—gargoyle shape-shifters who protect humankind from demons. If the demons discover the truth about Trinity, they’ll devour her, flesh and bone, to enhance their own powers.
When Wardens from another clan arrive with disturbing reports that something out there is killing both demons and Wardens, Trinity’s safe world implodes. Not the least because one of the outsiders is the most annoying and fascinating person she’s ever met. Zayne has secrets of his own that will upend her world yet again—but working together becomes imperative once demons breach the compound and Trinity’s secret comes to light. To save her family and maybe the world, she’ll have to put her trust in Zayne. But all bets are off as a supernatural war is unleashed…

CHAPTER ONE
I stood outside the familiar door, a notable absence at my side. The Dark One had left me to meet Demeter on my own, claiming he needed to secure the perimeter while I was inside, though I could not fathom why. We were secluded in the woods, not a soul to be found for miles. But as with everything Oz did, his motives were inexplicable, though undoubtedly present.
And I was not privy to them.
What I could only assume was trepidation coursed through my body when I thought of what I was about to do. Confronting Demeter was something I had never done, but now I had reasons beyond my own to do just that. If she was harboring Persephone or knew her whereabouts, I would know by the time I was finished.
One way or another, I was going to track down Hades’ wife.
As I raised my hand to rap on the door, it opened, seemingly of its own volition. There was no one standing there to greet me. Pushing it wider, I walked in to find my adoptive mother on the other side of the room, her expression every bit as tense and bitter as it always had been when I returned to her. It was as though nothing had changed.
And yet everything had.
“Demeter,” I said coldly, stopping in the center of the modest cabin. The isolation she had kept me in for centuries appeared to have been not only for my benefit. She liked living deep in nature, far away from human contact, though she had rarely been around during the six months each year I had spent as her ward. She could not tolerate the sight of me.
“Khara,” she replied in an equally icy tone, leaning against the rustic wooden cabinets behind her.
“I will keep this encounter brief for both our sakes. Where is Persephone?”
Her eyes narrowed slightly. “The covenant has been broken,” she said as though I were daft. “She is in the Underworld, where she will remain indefinitely.”
“And yet she is not,” I countered, stepping deeper into the room.
“Impossible,” she said, her features tightening.
“She has done something—something unthinkable—and I must find her. It would be wise of you to share her whereabouts with me before the others track her down. I may show her mercy. I cannot promise that much from the others who hunt her.”
“Who?” she asked, tightening her grip on the cup in her hand. “Who hunts her?”
“Many do. Myself, the Patronus Ceteri, the Dark One—”
“Dark One?” she gasped. The sharp sound of her mug shattering on the floor accented her surprise. “Then they have found you…” Her words were merely a whisper. I watched her trembling hand pale as she put it to her mouth. It was as though she were trying to put back the statement that had just escaped her lips.
“They have,” I replied, taking another step toward her.
She leaned away. “Persephone is not here,” she managed to say while staring me down with a new intensity; one driven by fear. “I have not seen her since she was taken to the Underworld before her time.”
“I do not believe you,” I said, striding toward her. She all but stumbled backward over herself as she tried to maintain distance between us.
“You must go now.” Her voice was strong but shaky. It gave me pause.
Then I watched as her eyes rolled back in her head and she fell to the ground, mumbling indecipherable words as she convulsed. Foamy drool pooled at the corners of her mouth as her head banged rhythmically against the floor. When I moved toward her, attempting to come to her aid, the cadence of her seizure increased and became more violent.
I retreated a step. The jerking slowed.
Another step. The incoherent rambling ceased.
Another step. Her head fell limp against the floor.
Then a voice from behind me drew my attention. I turned to find Oz hovering in the doorway, his expression a dark look of concern.
“Time to go, new girl.”
“What is happening to her?”
His dark expression grew tighter. “She’s overcome with fear.”
“Fear? Fear of what?”
He hesitated for only a moment. “What you’ve become.”
I stood there motionless, contemplating his mysterious words. Demeter had always known of whom I was born. Surely she could not have been surprised that I would take after my mother in some way; and that I would harbor some of my father’s traits as well.
“What exactly does she think I’ve grown to be?”
Oz’s eyes drifted to the unconscious former goddess on the floor, then back to me. His hesitation was plain. The struggle for words played out in the tight set of his features and the sharp furrow of his brow. He was weighing precisely how much he should tell me, which implied that he knew far more about my adoptive mother than he had ever let on.
With a sharp exhale, he finally spoke.
“Her worst nightmare realized. Now, let’s go. We need to get back to your brothers.”
He turned and stepped outside without so much as a glance back at Demeter and me. I looked down at her on the floor, her breathing fast and shallow but steady, and I wondered what kind of monster she saw when she looked at me—I wondered if she had always seen it when she looked upon my face. Her absence during my time on Earth would have been more understandable if that were true.
I was far more than a simple burden to her.
With that weight upon me, I left her alone in the house I had spent half of my life in and joined Oz. He took one look at me, then launched into the sky with me close behind. We flew straight back to the Victorian.
We had much to discuss with the others.

I raced through town and into Gramps’s neighborhood. When I got to the house, there was a generic-looking sedan, not unlike the one my father used to drive, parked outside. I hadn’t even pulled all the way into the driveway before Agent Douchecanoe was out of his vehicle and headed my way, file in hand.
“So you’re the errand boy,” I said to him as he scowled at me.
“You know you can hear that environmental hazard coming from a mile away, right?”
“Weird . . . kinda like your hostility and hubris.”
His frown deepened as he extended the file in his hand toward me. I reached for it, but he pulled it back at the last second.
“Striker said to make sure you got this.”
“Hence the errandboy comment—”
“Do you know what’s in here?”
“Do you know what’s in there?” I countered, knowing damn well he would have looked. The suspense would have killed him.
“They’re copies of evidence from you father’s trial.”
“Ding, ding, ding!” I exclaimed, snatching the file from his hand. “Consider your errand complete. I’d tip you, but . . . I don’t get paid until next week.”
“Why did Striker want you to have those?” he asked, totally unfazed by my jab.
“Because I asked for them.”
He shook his head.
“That’s adorable. You think you can find something that a defense lawyer and a team of FBI agents couldn’t find.”
“They weren’t really looking, though, were they? They approached his investigation as if he was already guilty. Hard to be objective when your singular focus is to bring down the fall guy.”
“Says the girl with the singular focus of freeing her daddy,” he replied. “What a sad day it’s going to be for you when all you find in those files is the truth of your father’s guilt.”
“We’ll see about that.”

How in the hell did I end up here?
It’s been a LOOOONG time since I’ve written a blog post, primarily because I’ve been busy writing books instead. When you had a fixed amount of time to write at all, you learn how to prioritize–quickly. So now, with my trade debut hitting shelves in three months and twenty indie/APub titles available online, I thought I had earned a hot second to write something else. Something involving NON-fictional characters for once (mainly me).
I’m sure the voices in my head will be thrilled with this idea.
If you’d asked me in 2009 when i started toying with the notion of writing a book that i would one day have sold hundreds of thousands of books and have some in stores, i would have taken your temperature and asked if you were well. Never in my life did i think to myself “hey….i think i want to be a writer.” Not even once. Writing seemed like such an intangible job; something you did if you were super artsy and hung out in coffee shops and waxed poetic about things that i didn’t notice and couldn’t have cared less about. That was my perception, and, as it so often does, became my reality. So i went through school with a science focus and got my doctorate instead. That seemed the sensible, responsible thing to do.
And i love that career. I wouldn’t give it up.
But what i didn’t realize while i zoned out in organic chemistry and neuroanatomy (FYI: not the best classes to zone out in), thinking about dreams I’d had that i wanted to keep reliving was that my “imagination” was really my creativity trying to come through (sometimes in not so subtle ways). I’d always been a daydreamer–i thought everyone was. I thought it was normal to create stories in your head all day long, to use your thoughts as a means to escape the boring, the mundane, or, on occasion, the unbearable. So i never thought anything of this until i was in my mid-thirties and pregnant, and having the CRAZIEST dreams ever. I wondered if maybe i should try to capture some of them on paper. With a little help from a friend, who basically dared me to do it (i don’t back down from those easily unless they involve deep water…or clowns), I started writing what would turn out to be the first book i ever published. CAGED was eventually uploaded to Amazon at the end of 2011. I thought, “well, that was fun,” and never expected anyone to ever buy it.
One month later, it took off.
Three months later, it had sold 35000 copies.
So about that time, i remember sitting in my kitchen with my husband, thinking HOLY SH*T…this is a thing! I’m a writer! How the in the hell did i get here?
I continued to self-publish until 2013 when i signed a deal with Amazon Publishing’s 47North imprint. The next evolutionary step in my publishing career–now, i was a hybrid author. One foot on either side of the publishing divide (and, MAN, is there a divide, but that’s a post for another day…).
I got an agent around 2014, one who had been a fan before she even started her career. Choosing Jess was easy, and I’ve never doubted it was the right one. She understood who i was as an author and how i wanted to write/publish. I can’t even begin to tell you how important that is to me.
And it was her understanding of who i am that was crucial in matching me up with my current editor. We pitched her two different fantasy novels before she asked if i wrote any YA (which, at the time, i didn’t). I’d had an idea for a series that i never expected to get to write. But we pitched her the idea and she loved it. I wrote the book exclusively for her and it was picked up two months later. In 2016, i got my fist Big Five publishing deal.
Look out world, they’re gonna put my words on a bookstore shelf!
While I’m patiently waiting for that book to release September 4, 2018, it made me think about me unconventional road to this point. I wanted to share that story for any aspiring writers who might happen to come across it. There is NO ONE WAY TO PUBLISH. You don’t have to know from the moment you’re born that you want to be a writer. You don’t have to fit a certain stereotype. It’s okay if you have a day job. It’s okay if you like to write at night in front of the TV or at the coffee shop around the corner. You can write quickly or slowly. You can be a plotter or pantser (#TeamPantser). It really doesn’t matter. What DOES matter is that you write. Yeah, it won’t likely be pretty at first; Lord knows mine wasn’t. Show me someone who claims they wrote a beautiful first draft of anything and i’ll show you a liar. It’s a PROCESS–not a clear cut destination. But, if you’re at all like me, a kid whose head loved to escape to the clouds–who found refuge in her own mind–then maybe, just maybe, you should join me on this journey.
Who knows… maybe yours will turn out just as crazy as mine.
