Poetry Thursday 276 - Holidays

As the holidays come to an end and I am contemplating my break in a couple of weeks, my mind turned to holidays as a source of inspiration.
I have produced three efforts including a haiku which seems to sum it all up.

As good as a rest
The break from the working mould, came with repetitive frequency. An annual tour of the world,no – but a visit to a different sea.
Living by the North was the norm, travelling to the Irish the alternative, signalled when the advancing swarmaimed for the resort more active.
The whole town transportedacross this green and sceptre isle,to spend the down time boarded,in guest rooms with the same home style.
Why go to this home from home, other than to judge which town’s best?Answered by the oldest chromosome,‘a change is as good as a rest’. ©David L Atkinson September 2017

The above was the annual pilgrimage during 'Shipyard fortnight'

Woolworth’s Corner
The chance to spend a fortune, soaring and plunging through the air, seeing spilled food and vomit, like an oil slick, everywhere.
Huddled in coats and jumpers,on the beach eating sand blown food.smelling the donkey effluent, reassuring Mum that it all tastes good.
Shopping for pointless presents, buying what you think you oughta, turning round Woolworth’s corner, into a gale to make your eyes water.
This was sunny Blackpool, ace resort of the north west,we’d travelled there for our holiday, and didn’t forget our vest. ©David L Atkinson September 2017

Writing - Disturbing time for baby boomers

The situation in North Korea and its possible outcomes is a strong reminder of 1963. I was a callow youth of 13 and hearing stories of Kruschev banging his shoe on the desk in the UN, blockades of Russian ships and the CIA making a 'pig's ear' of the Bay of Pigs.
Then there were the instructions of how to avoid radiation sickness in the event of a nuclear attack; stocking up on food, creating a nuclear bunker and films such as 'On The Beach'.
As a young teenager this was quite scary and yet here we are again. Only in this case it is the man with probably one weapon who could spark disaster for the world. That was a quote from the movie 'The Peacemaker' but when you consider the issue it could take just one to create the greatest disaster this world has ever known.
What is the barrier to this disaster? It isn't the number of bombs any other country has, it is the preparedness of the leaders of said countries to risk firing the first salvo.
When the ban the bomb movement was in full flow some considered it 'soft' or risky to get rid of such weapons. It doesn't really take intelligence to consider the state of the world after such a nuclear war, it takes imagination.
There were many stories and movies  created in the sixties around the subject and yet people favour military might to peaceful coexistence. This is the education that Kim John Un received when educated in the west and it is the premise upon which Donald Trump bases his responses to the North Korean leader. They are simply wrong.
Children's Peace Memorial Hiroshima, Japan
The protagonists should meet face to face in Hiroshima and see the devastation caused by a relatively primitive atomic bomb. They should examine the case histories of victims and try to empathise with the little girl whose frail body was burnt into the pavement. They don't need to consider the reasons why the bomb was dropped just the affects of one. If they have any shred of humanity they would get rid of those horrific weapons at once.

Tuesday Food Blog - Minimalist curry

This recipe was partly inspired by Jamie Oliver's 5 ingredients cookbook and a strong fancy for a curry.

This is a very simple dish but makes a great supper or lunch depending on how it is served.
Ingredients
Marsala - mustard seeds, tumeric, garam marsala, cumin, chilli flakes, ginger, curry powder and butter.500g beef mince1 onion, chopped1 tbsp tomato puree5 cherry tomatoes, halvedtin of garden peasbaby new potatoes, halved
MethodThe marsala is the sauce base upon which all of my curries are based. It is made by melting butter then cooking the mustard seeds until they start to pop then add the turmeric, garam marsala and cumin. When that has been blended thoroughly add the chopped onion and tomatoes and the remainder of the spices including the tomato puree.Season with salt and pepper.Brown the mince, add to the marsala and stir together. Then you can add the prepared potatoes and the peas. You will probably need extra liquid and I make 1/2 Litre of gravy and stir it into the curry. I then allow it to simmer for 40 - 60 minutes.
This was served with pitta breads. You could use rice, or chapatis.
You could make this even more simple by just stirring in curry powder but I like to make the marsala because of the fuller flavour experienced.

Writing - Castled

The term 'castling' is a chess move intended to protect the king from attack. Castling is something that politicians are constantly practising. Take G4S for example.
G4S is a security company that was an amalgamation of a couple of companies and has a number of politicians with vested interests, not least the prime minister Theresa May who has shares in Prudential which is a major shareholder in G4S. The passage below is from a Channel 4 news programme and sums up the massive vested interests of the government with certain private companies.'the beleagured security firm G4S, which benefits annually from £600m of contracts from government, has a former government minister, Whitehall advisers and civil servants on its board. These include, former home secretary and defence secretary John Reid (now Baron Reid of Cardowan), former Met police commissioner Lord Condon (who earns £124,600 as a non-executive director of G4S), former prison governor Tom Wheatley and helpfully for G4S’ energy meter monitoring arm, the former energy regulator Claire Spottiswoode is a non-executive director (earning £56,800).My book 'Castled' is not directly political but does involve the art of castling. Patrick Steele is placed in a position unfamiliar to him when his own personal space is burgled. The consequences are extensive at a personal level and to his property. The ghost of a previous operation drives Steele to take measures to retrieve the artefacts stolen from him and to avenge the death of a member of his team. He is handed a possible solution but then there arises a threat to his identity which he must keep hidden at all costs. The question is how high is the price that is paid to remain elusive?https://www.amazon.co.uk/Castled-David-L-Atkinson/dp/1849144737/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1504269722&sr=1-2&keywords=Castled God Bless

Writing - Earth plc

It's that craziest of days once again. 12 months have passed and once more millions of pounds will be committed by one club to another for the services of an idol with feet of clay. Transfer deadline day. There is only one difference - the sums of money have grown enormously. £35 million for a mediocre player!!!!

On the other hand in the UK 20 million free meals were given out at food banks in the last year!
The money spent on football is obscene!
Then of course there is the Earth. At the time of writing there is flooding in the USA, India and Bangladesh. The last flood in the US cost $100 million = one superstar footballer. That doesn't cover the heartache, loss of property and work that must follow.
Then there is fracking. In a world where global warming is a problem which has been exacerbated by the use of fossil fuels and yet our government with its guiding committee are overriding local planning authorities to enable fracking. The gas is a fossil fuel.
Some of these issues are referred to in Earth plc

A man is found dead in the massive Kielder Forest in Northumberland and the initial reports suggest suicide. A member of Patrick A Steele's team feels that is not the whole story and an investigation ensues that leads the team into conflict with some of the most powerful people in the UK. Steele can mete out his own brand of justice initially but when the power companies and the government become involved Steele has to tread carefully. This time Patrick has been drawn into a national issue that affects us all - Global warming. Steele comes up against the might of corporate finance with the backing of national government who are keen to maintain the status quo on the subject when in fact there is evidence to support a different view.
The team struggle to maintain their anonymity under intense pressure and the chances of success seem to be increasingly slim.
Has Patrick bitten off more than he can chew?
Is there collateral damage to other aspects of his life?
What is next for Steele and his team?

Poetry Thursday 275 - Speculation

I was reminded of abstract thought by the mention of Antigonish.

This led me on to a couple of offerings triggered by unrelated incidents in the last couple of days.

I planned to but …
I planned to go but didn’tand was relieved in the end,as the outcome wasn’t what I wanted, and being philosophical – I can’t pretend. That is often the case for me,when there are two possibilities. You could make a wager with money, that the winner will be the other. It is I’m sure the same for everyonein the realm of making choices,to wish for the emotionally satisfyingbut getting the emotionally challenging. An exercise designed to test usand make life more interesting, keeping us from complacency, and making us choose the risky.©David L Atkinson August 2017

It was a cricket match. The stimulus for below was in my church.

Did you ever?
Did you ever look up at the lantern,hand-crafted by a skilled artisan, and see the deft final brush strokesof the wood stain, pattern unplanned, and wonder how he was feeling that day?No defined plan or finished design to follow, just the knowledge that the work would end.In the grained wood surface is the art,the random shapes and unexpected patternthat he leaves – serendipitous art. Then he moves on to the next job unaware,of what masterpiece he will create this time.©David L Atkinson August 2017

Writing - Grace and Favour

The holiday lingers beautifully. Cricket is on and the writing muscle is in a state of relaxation.

Steele has had to accept changes in life style and yet he is required once again to tackle a situation of injustice, but has concerns that he is being commissioned to act by the authorities. Patrick is working alone trying to recover a youngster kidnapped from parents with a high profile role in the UK establishment. He is without the support of former allies, the Gurentai, and yet feels that the police and National Crime Agency, who have requested his involvement, have another agenda that is not necessarily in the interest of Steele. The action is shared mostly between the UK and Canada. In the early stages of the case Patrick is chasing kidnappers across the continent of North America when disaster occurs and he is forced to return to the UK. While in Canmore, Alberta, Steele seeks solace from the apparent loss of his long-time partner and fiancée Naomi Kobayashi, in the arms of a local girl. However, Steele becomes aware that he himself seems to be being kept in the dark regarding the whole truth of the case and returns home. Eventually Patrick’s home situation is threatened and it becomes necessary for him to take steps to protect himself and his team. All the while Steele has the feeling that he is not under control and in fact is being played like a pawn. In the end he takes steps to protect his and his team’s safety.Has Steele bitten off more than he can chew? Where is his love life going? Are former allies, the Gurentai, targeting Steele? Will he recover the kidnapped child or will he fail and become subject of retribution by the authorities?

Writing - 7 Hours

A lot can happen in seven hours.

Patrick Steele is off crusading once again with his sidekick, fiancée Naomi Kobayashi. This time he is risking life and limb by returning to the hostile shores of the USA. He has had brushes with the authorities in that vast country on previous occasions, but now has been stimulated to return because of apparent dodgy dealings over the World Trade Centre disaster of September 11th 2001.
After discovering numerous ‘theories’ concerning 9/11 and who was behind it, Steele identifies possible links between large corporations with financial interests and political parties. In a presidential election year he is concerned that those vying for that prodigious post may have links with the disaster.
Has Steele discovered underhand dealing by the US security services?
Did one of the major political parties have a hand in the destruction of 9/11?
Will Steele be caught by the CIA or can he escape back to the safety of the UK?
What was Building 7?

Writing - MH370

It's holiday time and there is little available option to write. So examples of previous efforts may inspire.

Steele has to travel back to Japan to justify recent behaviours that may have revealed his connection with the Gurentai. He is given a task to complete that finds him on the ill-fated Flight MH370 in Kuala Lumpur. Hours later he awakens in a cell in a place and country of which he has no knowledge.
Being the resourceful man he is, Steele manages to escape and travels north meeting up with his fiancée Naomi Kobayashi in Astana the capital of Kazakhstan.
Steele is naturally curious about the fate of the other 238 passengers from the plane which drives him onward to investigate further. He discovers that there are links between Russian organised crime and a Muslim group which stirs fears in his mind regarding the fate of MH370. This causes him to go to the Venice of the North, St Petersburg, where he finds the leader of the Russian mafia and a link with the Muslim pilots of the plane.
All does not go well however, and Steele and Kobayashi are captured by their mafia enemy and incarcerated in MH370 on the way to the target that Steele suspected all along - in London.
Can Steele extricate himself from this seemingly hopeless situation?
Has Steele convinced the Gurentai that he is trustworthy enough to deserve their support?
Will Steele manage to deflect the missile in which he is incarcerated from killing thousands in London?
This story is a speculative journey based upon the data and misinformation surrounding the loss of Malaysian Flight 370 in March 2014.
Currently available in all formats from Amazon at £1.81
