Writing - RIP Colin Dexter
One of the most influential writers of the twentieth century died today. Colin Dexter created the detective Inspector Endeavour Morse. Morse became a top watched TV series and has generated two spin off programmes in Lewis and Endeavour.

Colin Dexter is very readable and his story lines are incredibly convoluted. John Thaw immortalised the policeman on the small screen but Dexter made cameo appearances in the programmes rather like Alfred Hitchcock.

Actor Shaun Evans played the role of Endeavour Morse in the prequel Endeavour.
[image error]Shaun Evans as Endeavour
The Morse series ran from 1987 - 2000 and has been repeated almost daily ever since. Endeavour is a much smaller project but has already been repeated a couple of times.
In fact I have read ten Morse stories and as with Ian Rankin's detective series they started rather slowly but were thoroughly cracking by the time I got half way through.
My own books are easy to criticise as are all stories but I would hope that people see the development.
Even though I wrote this story I understand that it is raw but what I hope is that people can engage with the characters and then through the sequels understand from whence I am coming.
Synopsis
Patrick Steele is an accountant with training for various physical skills. He has made himself a self-styled Robin Hood available to right the wrongs of society using his skills as an accountant and a man of violence. The Gurentai, a sub-group of the Japanese Yakuza, employs him to prevent the incursion of the Mafia into England - specifically the northeast. The Mafia have blackmailed, or so it seems, a member of the local government planning committee to give contracts to a building firm under their control. That is James Thompson, but his wife Janice is hiding a secret! The Gurentai set Steele up with a Swiss bank account with sufficient remuneration to purchase an empty factory unit and set it up as a training facility and garage for himself. He also is to follow Aikido training to hone his skills in hand-to-hand combat and to adopt the spiritual attitudes of the Gurentai. The action begins near the Thompson household and at a building site operated by the Italian sponsored building firm. He indulges in some property sabotage and minor wounding of one of the hierarchy of the building firm. This does not have the desired effect however, and in an effort to discover the prime movers heads after the source of the funds, to The Marche, a region on Italy's east coast. Here Steele discovers the 'family' responsible for the fraud that is taking place in England and assassinates the member who controls all family business. He is caught twice in getting away but manages to escape himself, the second time with the help of two members of the Gurentai, Sumisu and Misaki. They fly him out to their HQ in Osaka, Japan and he learns more of the group he has been employed by. They, Steele, Mr Sumisu and Misaki, return to England to finish the job they had started. There is a modicum of love interest between Steele and Misaki that ends in tragedy later on in the story when Misaki is killed. Steele tries again to put the 'frighteners' on James Thompson but to no avail. Thompson is then assassinated in his front hall and shortly afterwards the Thompson females escape heading for the Newcastle quayside. Steele takes Janice off a cargo vessel and while being watched by Misaki escapes but then Misaki is killed. In the ensuing chase Steele catches up with Janice and her party and ends the matter. Throughout the story Steele is struggling with his newfound wealth and the morality of what he is required to do. The twist at the end concerning Janice Thompson is intended to heighten the suspense.

Tuesday Food Blog - My own corned beef hash
As a very amateur cook I have rarely attempted my own take on a particular dish. I don't know enough about combinations of flavours etc. to be fully confident or indeed successful at innovation. However, as someone who occasionally likes to push the borders of restraint I have had a go.
David's corned beef hash
Ingredients
2 tins of corned beef, diced1 sweet potato, diced1 onion, chopped,2 cloves garlic, chopped1/2 pint gravy14oz tin of baked beans3 chopped mushroomspotatoes for mashing, cheddar cheesesalt and black pepper2 tbsp olive oil
Method
Preheat the oven to 170 degrees Celsius.Pour the oil into a frying pan, put in the chopped onion and fry until clear. Season with salt and ground black pepper and then add the garlic. Add the sweet potato and fry for five minutes on a high heat stirring continuously. Add the diced corned beef and turn gently as the cubes tend to break up.In an oven proof dish pour the tin of baked beans evenly across the bottom of the dish. Then add on top the fried mixture and the sliced mushrooms. Pour in the gravy.Boil the potatoes for 15 - 20 minutes then allow them to dry in the hot pan for a couple of minutes then add butter, milk and salt and pepper and mash.Cover the meat and vegetable mixture with the mashed potato and place in the oven for 30 minutes. Remove and sprinkle with cheese and return to the oven for a further 20 minutes. Serve with green vegetables.
Tip: Store the corned beef in the refrigerator overnight, it makes it easier to dice and holds its shape in the pan.
I enjoyed this simple dish and believe that is because in part there is a 'comfort' food feel about the end result.

Writing - Words from raindrops
As I have been focusing on my books the final one is Words from the Raindrops. Now the first collection of poetry was as much a learning curve as is writing a first novel and so this second collection I believe to be more grown up. There is a fuller description below.
We don't read poetry because it is cute.We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race, and the human race is full of passion.(Robin Williams)
The reaction of people when I say that I write poetry is often odd. Usually they don't know what to say, but mostly it is almost an embarrassed silence. Perhaps they are expecting me to wear beds dark glasses and a pony tail. I think this stems from the fact that they understand that poetry is about emotions and us Britishers don't talk about our emotions.Robin Williams opinion of poetry catches it all.
This second collection of poetry is different from ‘The Musings of a Confused Mind’ in that it is NOT intended as a semi-educational experience in which I explore a range of styles with examples and rules. This collection apart from some recent insertions, if read chronologically, could almost be biographical in that I write poetry weekly and the enclosed works are from the last three years. When I write poetry I choose a style that feels appropriate to the subject and mood I’m feeling at the time. It is my wish, as always, that when this is read it delivers something to the reader and provides a level of entertainment. Also if you need an outlet for tensions of your own then try writing.

Writing - News in verse
In the time of Robin Hood, the 15th century, news was broadcast by minstrels who were also itinerant entertainers. In fact rhyming news is even older. One of the earliest records of the happenings of the Battle of Hastings was The Carmen de Hastingae (Song of the Battle of Hastings). It is in poetic style in 835 lines written in Latin.
[image error]An arrow in the eye
The minstrels were in fact giving hints about Robin Hood as early as 1283.
Lytil Jhon and Robyne HudeWayth-men ware commendyd gudeIn Yngil-wode and BarnysdaleThai oysyd all this tyme thare trawale.
It is interesting that there is also mention of his famous sidekick Little John. For the curious Barnysdale, is supposedly near Pontefract in Yorkshire. The importance is that these ballads giving information, sometimes celebrating or deriding, events of the day were passed down the years in song.
A ballad has poetic form ABABBCBC over 13 lines of couplets of rhymed verse, each of 14 syllables. It would be interesting to write the ballad of Sturgeon and May.

Review
This collection of poetry is both varied in style as well as content. The author has provided the reader with informative explanations of the origin and design of the different types in which he has written. Some of the subject matter is quite dark but very thought provoking as a result, and other poems are as up-to-date as they could possibly be. Entering into the pages of this work will cause the reader to examine their own soul.

Within the shiny covers of this book you will find educational information about a variety of styles of poetry as I am continually frustrated by media descriptions of certain types such as haiku. Haiku is not simply a 17 syllable poem written in three lines of 5 - 7 - 5 construction. The Japanese masters who created this form added other conditions which can be read in this slim volume.
As with all poetry much of the content is personal and I ask that you read it with that fact in mind.

Poetry Thursday 255 - Spring to Life
The season has had an influence on this weeks writings. But beware of false dawns.
Ne'er cast a clowt till may is out!
The first poem is slightly more serious in that it is an exhortation to beware of wanting too much too quickly.

Is this the real life?
Well what can you expect? The best laid plans of mice.Things don’t go, even without neglect,as one would like, to be nice.
But what can you do?Only one course – grin and bear, the arrows thrown at you, then carry on and don’t much care.
Then possess your soul.Things will turn out for the best,or be okay, on the whole.Just let time pass and take your rest.
One day when you open your eye,you will feel the wind of change, lights of hope will appear in the sky,and good things come into range.©David L Atkinson March 2017
There are arguments to be made for the sayings of sages and old
wives about possessing your soul in patience and as I have aged I
can see the reasoning.

Ladybird
Bright ladybirdflies out when warm, tells of the summeryet to come.
We shiver in late spring’s chill, wonder at the bold insect, appearing at a hint he will, should show spring more respect.
His creatures are not ready yet,he cannot farm his food, too early, too cold and too wet, back to sleep would be good. ©David L Atkinson March 2017
As I enjoy the natural world seeing a ladybird in early March is significant. It reminded me of the saying about casting off winter clothing before may is out. In this case the saying refers to the may flower and not the month.

Writing - Be informative
As someone who has been involved in education his whole life I find the research element of writing to be stimulating. The discovery of new knowledge, to me, is quite exciting and I have great pleasure in sharing that information.
As well as having written 11 novel I also produce poetry by the ton. Usually that's in the hope that some of the work is good - quantity not quality! The collection featured below is a marriage of poetry inspired by traumatic times in my life while at the same time hopefully educating the reader and so encouraging others to write poetry themselves.

Writing - How much for a letter?
The value of letters increases annually. I am not talking about letters you post but the letters you use to make up the words that you write. However, in comparison with their shelf life they are still relatively inexpensive but then of course some value has to be attached to letters according to who wrote them. So when a lady bought Silas Marner in a bookshop for £1 a letter that had found its way into the book was written by Enid Blyton. It will sell for a lot more I'm sure. Now my words and letters are, as yet, are no where near as valuable but you never know!
[image error]A woman has found a letter by popular children's author Enid Blyton in a book that cost £1.
Jacqueline Ralph found the note in a copy of Silas Marner, by George Eliot, which she purchased in the Cinema Bookshop in Hay-on-Wye.
The letter reads: "Dear Mary, my warm congratulations on winning one of my prizes.
"You did very well and you deserve a prize. I am very pleased to send it. Well done! Love from Enid Blyton."
Here are some of my letters!
7 Hours After may well be described as historical even now. If it is available in the future it will be more so and that is because it is my take on a real event.
Synopsis
Patrick Steele is off crusading once again with his sidekick, fiancée Naomi Kobayashi. This time he is risking life and limb by returning to the hostile shores of the USA. He has had brushes with the authorities in that vast country on previous occasions, but now has been stimulated to return because of apparent dodgy dealings over the World Trade Centre disaster of September 11th 2001.
After discovering numerous ‘theories’ concerning 9/11 and who was behind it, Steele identifies possible links between large corporations with financial interests and political parties. In a presidential election year he is concerned that those vying for that prodigious post may have links with the disaster.
Has Steele discovered underhand dealing by the US security services?
Did one of the major political parties have a hand in the destruction of 9/11?
Will Steele be caught by the CIA or can he escape back to the safety of the UK?
What was Building 7?

Writing - Conspiracy theories
Continuing the theme of authors as social commentators I offer you my last completed novel, 7 Hours After. It is in print as a result of the various reports on events of that fateful day and the speculation in the media since. Included at the end of the novel are appendices containing evidence published in the US about the horrific day in 2001.
More specifically this story focuses on Building 7 which seems to have been demolished seven hours after the planes hit the twin towers of the World Trade Centre.
In all honesty this type of writing can be emotive as it creates an opening for the conspiracy theorists and their evidence.

More specifically this story focuses on Building 7 which seems to have been demolished seven hours after the planes hit the twin towers of the World Trade Centre.
