Two fast sheikhs

I said last week I was off on the promotion trail for my old sheikh at a bargain price, and my new sheikh before I raised the price to $3.99. Things are up and down all over the place as the various promotions happen. Some bring a good result and some have been a total waste of time and money. There's no way to find out except by investing the $$$ and watching the sales figures.

Today I have a somewhat expensive feature on Choosy Bookworm. I've had good luck there before. To be honest I was expecting the two books on different days, but the double exposure might just work in my favour. Here's hoping!

Logistics of promotion

Writing a book is only the first step – even though it might feel like a massive undertaking.

I love writing. I’d probably be happy to write for the pure pleasure of it. But payment is very nice – and so are the emails and reviews from readers who enjoy the stories.

So we need to let them know there’s a new book out, and that’s easier said than done. I’ve just published ‘Desired by the Sheikh’ – the second in my Sheikhs of Al Sounam series.

Kris Pearson - cover, Desired by the Sheikh

Bookbub is by far the most successful book promotion site. Also the most expensive. $US 360 for a small one-day listing for a contemporary romance you’ve made Free. $US 720 if you price it down to 99 cents - and that’s if they’ll accept you. They don’t feature books at full price – even if that full price is only $2.99. They want deals for their customers. I can’t argue with that, but their list reaches 1,870,000 keen contemporary romance readers so it’s a great place to be.

Thinking strategically, and knowing they wouldn’t promote the new one at full price, I wondered if they’d take my all-time best-seller first in this series if I dropped it to 99 cents. No.

Well damn!

The cost of Indie Publishing

Yes, we’re talking dollars and cents – or sense. How much are some authors willing to spend launching their books? Of course there are ‘places’ who will do all the work for you, and charge accordingly. They’re in business to make money, after all. But the satisfaction of taking care of things for yourself is huge. The power! The control! Here’s a link to a very good Facebook post by Georgia Cates. Definitely worth a read.

https://www.facebook.com/georgia.cates.9/posts/839010402872754

This week I have three new books that might interest you. They’re all by writers in a special closed group I belong to; good friends who support each other and aren’t afraid of calling a spade a spade.

Public Love in a Private Place - Book 3 of the Private Love series by Toni Kenyon

Having faked his own death to escape his out-of-control lifestyle, rock star, Julian MacAvoy and his beloved Mags are lying low in the Far North of New Zealand.

Enjoying their newfound anonymity, Julian has to come to terms with the prospect of discovery when Mags turns their new life upside down by announcing that she's pregnant.

Will this reformed bad-boy be forced to return to his rock star roots?

Pre- orders

Hallelujah - my second sheikh novel is finally somewhere near completion. I can put it up for pre-order! But I’m shaking in my shoes a bit wondering just when to time the pre-order for. Life has been pretty ridiculous (elderly/sick/dying parents-in-law mostly) over the last year or so… and I’ve gotten myself involved in other writing projects… and you know how things go? Pear-shaped in a big way.

Kris Pearson - cover, Desired by the Sheikh

BUT, somewhere in the next couple of days I’ll bite the bullet and get the pre-orders set up for ‘Desired by the Sheikh’. In the meantime, enjoy the lovely cover. This is Stacy Cassano and Sheikh Akil al-Husayn bin Khalid. He calls her Miss Bikini. She’s so unsuitable that it can only possibly be a quick affair…

‘Desired by the Sheikh’ follows on from my top-selling novel ‘Taken by the Sheikh’. Akil is one of the sons of the twin who became king when his brother was assassinated.  There’s a third in this trio to follow – provisionally entitled ‘Craved by the Sheikh’. In this, Akil’s brother Qadir has to deflect the attentions of a nosy reporter who might just blow the family’s greatest secret sky-high.

Book trailers

Do you go looking for them? Do you watch them? I’m asking because the translator of my Spanish books has made one each for ‘Resisting Nick’ and ‘Taken by the Sheikh’ (the Spanish translations of course.) We want to try and get the Spanish books selling faster, and she’d like to offer book trailers as an addition to all her other work.

You get first look, although I’ve put earlier versions up on my Kris Pearson Escritora Facebook page.

I guess the next step is to get them onto my website pages, Amazon Author page, Goodreads page etc.

Hopefully I’ll be able to afford some English versions too.

So I come back to my initial questions: Do you go looking for book trailers? Do you watch them? And more importantly, do you think it’s worth me doing some more?

Joanne Hill on book reviews

My friend Joanne Hill is one of the authors in the Love Down Under boxed set. She’s just blogged about reviews, so I’ve stolen some of what she had to say. Here’s Joanne -

‘For a start, I was - I mean, we were - at the top of the Smart Bitches best seller list this week with the Love Downunder set. Very nice.

Smart Bitches newsletter

Second, reviews keep rolling in for said set, including reviews for  Falling for Jack.

A male friend and I were discussing names and how Jack was such a great boy's name, and how "Falling for Dick" (for example) doesn't have the same panache. This was in light of a Dear Author tweet on the subject... that if there is a Richard and a Jack in a novel, you know who the girl is going to end up with. Jack is completely over-used in books and film but it is such a good name.

Over to Rosalind -

This week I'm using my blog space to reprint a blog Rosalind James wrote about our boxed set. No point in re-inventing the wheel!

Are Boxed Sets Done?

Creating the Boxed Set LOVE DOWN UNDER
by Rosalind James

A little background: LOVE DOWN UNDER (Eight New Zealand & Australian Feel-Good Beach Romances), went up for sale on all outlets on May 20, and, one day later, has reached the 300s overall on Amazon US, the 100s overall on Barnes & Noble, and the 100s in Romance on iBooks. Not too bad!
