Reynaud observed his mistress in silence. Her nervousness was charming in its purity. To an outsider, Liviana would appear as tranquil as one of Bernini’s marbles, but Reynaud knew better....

The Force Awakened: And It was a Mix Tape

On Friday the 18th Marzio and I went to see Star Wars Episode VII. As each of the trailers was released Marzio got more and more excited, while I held on to my reservations. Like Anakin Skywalker, and mostof you,I was left terribly scarred by the prequels. After Lucas’cinematic abominations, misa thoughtStar Wars was poo doo and best left in the trash compactor. Still, I’ll admit, that some small part of me held on toa glimmer of hope. Somewhere beneath the scars left behind by Lucas’ hubris...

The Tendrils of Fate Cover Reveal

During the last three years Marzio Ombra and I have been busy co-authoring Tendrils of Fate, a romantic fantasy novel that features a naera–a watery abomination with eeltails for legs and the torso of a woman. The term naera is one of my own making, derived in part from the Greek nereids and naiads–mischievouswater spiritsthat were said toinhabitseas and rivers.

How Tendrils of Fate Came About

Back in 2012 I was working on the manuscriptThe Soulbinders Covenent, Book One of Lirios and had gr...

The Story of a Comfortably Curious Cookie

Storytelling has always been a welcome occurrence in my life. I am not talking about books or movies or television but rather verbally transferring experiences from one soul to another. Since I was a child I would happily listen to the stories my older family members would share. Tales about colorful family members and strange events, of challenges faced and crises experienced. There’s no way to tell how much of those tales was embellishment, but it doesn’t really matter. The telling itself w...

Whisperers: An Excerpt From “The Tendrils of Fate”

Whisperers

Mir’kadi, Eighteenth of Sund’im

Rime thickened along the Swoughünd’s hull until she began to list sideways. The cries of her captain pierced the morning fog, sending sailors scampering into the frozen harbor. They descended along the docks with pickaxes and clubs, ready to break the ship free of the ice.

Ice floes the size of barges had washed down from upriver into the channel, where they buckled upon each other and blocked access to the sea. Somewhere in the fog, Gøran heard the...

Our Schizophrenic Relationship with Sex and Violence

sexvsvioleance

One of the more frustrating aspects of American culture is our schizophrenic relationship with sexuality and violence in media. As George RR Martin states, Americans have no problem with violence, but sex is a huge issue. For a long time I have grappled with understanding sex and violence in American media.

Our highest grossing films tend to be violent. Our TV shows revel in violence.Showtime’s Dexter, CBS’ Criminal Minds, Fox’s The Followingand AMC’s The Walking Dead, are gore fests that no...

Writing Reality Check

Sometimes it can seem that everyone, their mother, and their grandmother is jumping on the novel-writing bandwagon. The indie publishing sphere has graduated to the terminology “artisanal publishing” for a reason: because it’s closely approaching the well-oiled machine mechanics of the big six. Indie authors are writing books in record numbers and in record time. 4,500 new books are uploaded to Amazon each day. There are countless DIY publishing books that prescribe get-rich-quick formulas fo...

The Gardens of Skylands Manor in the Fall

I spend long hours at the computer. When I’m not designing, I’m writing or tweeting or doing something computer related. Timespent hunched over the keys can quickly add up to burnout if I’m not cognizant of taking breaks. Working around the clock may seem important until you realize that you’re not getting nearly as much done as you thought. Taking a break and getting some distance from the work is one of the best things you can do for your body and your soul. When the weekend comes around I a...

My Main Character Comes to Life in 3D

My Graphic Design Background

Ibecame interested in CGI and 3D modeling in college. That was back in the day of betacams and Avid editing systems when 9Gig hard drives were serious business. I spent the days in dark rooms splicing quarter track, 16mm and occasionally, time behind hulking monitors working with 3D Studio Max, Lightwave and AT&T RIO. No one even remembers RIO now but back in the day it was cutting edge for creating 3D titles on screen.

My very first rendering wasan awkward lookin...
