TuffGnarl.com Q&A
When we last spoke to Alex Segura here at TuffGnarl.com he was embarking on giving readers and crime fiction fans their second dose of the Miami set noir adventures of reporter Pete Fernandez. Almost a year later Segura is bringing us a third new novel, Dangerous Ends, set in the magic city. The book hits shelves this week. As both a huge fan and a fellow Miami native, I was super stoked to be able to once again chat with Alex about his latest book, what influenced it and what lies ahead for his flawed hero Pete Fernandez.
Criminal Element on DANGEROUS ENDS
Dangerous Ends by Alex Segura is the 3rd Pete Fernandez mystery—a fast-paced, hardboiled and surprising novel that pushes Pete Fernandez into a battle with a deadlier, more complex threat, as he tries to shake off the demons haunting Miami’s own, sordid past.

Bookreporter on DANGEROUS ENDS
Pete Fernandez is a quietly likable protagonist, the type of guy you want to know and have on your side, and not just because he drives around town with Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew on his car stereo. Segura knows his territory, and the combination of the knowing and troubled detective with the seething backdrop of contemporary Miami makes this a hard series to resist and DANGEROUS ENDS a book you’ll want to read immediately.

A Dangerous Dance: A Conversation with Alex Segura & Thomas Pluck
You’d be hard-pressed to find crime-fiction protagonists more different than Jay Desmarteaux and Pete Fernandez. One is a grizzled ex-con, the other a washed up ex-journalist struggling to be a PI. And while they’re not really running in the same social circles, both come from the minds of two crime-fiction contemporaries in Thomas Pluck and Alex Segura.

Robots From Tomorrow Interview
If the brightest light casts the darkest shadow, then novelist Alex Segura made the perfect choice in setting his Pete Fernandez series of mystery novels in Miami. And if his name seems familiar, it should be to anyone reading this site on a regular basis: Segura is not only the “PR guy” for Archie Comics, he also edits their Dark Circle line of titles as well as writing a few from time to time. But today’s interview focuses on those mystery novels, the third of which (“Dangerous Ends”) hit bookstores earlier this week. Greg finds out how Alex handles having to hit certain genre expectations while still finding something personal to say in his work, the benefits of writing more than one book at a time, some advice for how to promote your work without turning people off, and just what “Noir at the Bar” entails. All that and more on this week’s episode!

Machete Kills!: Alex Segura – “Dangerous Ends”
When I last left Miami P.I. Pete Fernandez, he was venturing “Down the Darkest Street.” Some time has passed and now I find him up to “Dangerous Ends.” His best friend Kathy Bentley has published not one but TWO best-selling true crime books based on his exploits, and so it’s no surprise when he’s contacted (and contracted) by Maya Varela, the daughter of a notorious murderer; she means to exonerate her father, who was convicted on relatively slim evidence for a murder that, Maya insists, he never committed.

Alex Segura is a bit of a renaissance man at Archie Comics. His business card identifies him as Senior Vice President of Publicity and Marketing, but he’s also the editor of Archie imprint Dark Circle Comics and the writer of several Archie comics of his own (Archie Meets KISS, Archie Meets Ramones). His latest is The Archies, a one-shot with writer Matthew Rosenberg that follows Archie Andrews as he attempts to turn his songwriting dreams into a reality, with a little help from his friends.
