Soooo Cute!
Marty’s photo of the day #2786: In this photo, I’m in a remote Amazon Rainforest camp, holding a pygmy marmoset—the world’s smallest species of monkey. The little guy belonged to a Yagua girl, who let me hold him in exchange for a t-shirt.

Why I will never visit Japan
Marty’s photo of the day #2785: I will never visit a country that supports whaling. So no Japan for me! Their withdrawal from the International Whaling Commission to resume commercial whaling for the first time in 31 years is reprehensible.
Today’s photo is of an old whaling dinghy, stuck in volcanic
ash, on Deception Island, near Antarctica. The dinghy makes a great subject for
an artsy photo, which is the only thing it’s good for.

The tears of a duck
Marty’s photo of the day #2783: I pushed the shutter button just in time to get this female mallard duck in mid-shake. What I didn’t know, until I looked at the photo later on my computer monitor, is that the water drops lined up perfectly under her eyes, so they look like tears.

Good morning Antarctica!
Marty’s photo of the day #2782: I was the first person to spot Antarctica—at least on the little ship I was on. At three in the morning, everyone was sleeping but me. I got out of bed and padded onto the bow. The month was February, so this was Antarctica’s summer, and the sky never grew totally dark. When I look at this photo now, I can still feel the chill that went up my spine at that moment—and that chill was as much from excitement as it was from the cold.
