January 24 will mark the publication of my debut picture book, Cut!: How Lotte Reiniger and a Pair of Scissors Revolutionized Animation , illustrated by Matt Schu

I Have a Picture Book Coming in 2023!

I'm so excited to announce that I'm now the author of a picture book biography! Cut!: How Lotte Reinger and a Pair of Scissors Revolutionized Animation, illustrated by the talented Matt Schu, will release from Greenwillow Books in Winter 2023. Thanks to my Greenwillow editor, Martha Mihalick, for acquiring the book back in the darkness and chaos of early 2020, and to my agent, Barbara Poelle, for helping me embark on this new adventure.

Fall 2021 Updates

Hello, dear readers!

It's been a while since I've posted any news here, mainly because the book news I'm sitting on can't be shared publicly just yet. I'm shrouded in secrecry right now! All I can say is that I sold a book last year and hope to be able to announce it publicly next year. 

I'm also working on a secret new project, and I have another book out on submission . . . so, again, all the things I could possibly talk about are projects I can't actually talk about.

Eight Years of IN THE SHADOW OF BLACKBIRDS


April 2 marked the eighth anniversary of the publication of my debut novel, In the Shadow of Blackbirds . This past year I've often felt like I've become trapped inside the book's 1918 setting, when another pandemic threatened lives, shut down cities, and turned masks into a means of keeping everyone safe. As so many businesses continue to struggle from the economic effects of the pandemic, I urge you to buy from indie bookstores. Supporting local libraries is also important and helps readers, authors, and local communities immensely, but if you're able to and would prefer to buy your newest read, please consider shopping at a site such as Bookshop.org, which raises money for indies.

A Dark Winter's Night: A Virtual Painting & Poetry Workshop

Embrace the chill of winter with an online poetry and watercolor painting workshop I'm hosting with my sister, artist Carrie Raleigh, on Tuesday, December 29, 5:00 - 6:30 pm PST. 

Carrie will teach participants how to create an atmospheric watercolor painting of a moonlit winter’s night. I'll then lead everyone in a poetry lesson that transforms the dark beauty of winter into verse.
