Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Season Is One of the World’s Largest, Most Impressive Winter Festivals

As the hotter weather cools down in the northern hemisphere, people are getting ready for the chilly (or at least, chillier) weather and all the travel experiences that come with it. In Saudi Arabia, the cooler months are among the best times to visit the country. One of the reasons is for the monumental event that is Riyadh Season.

Riyadh Season is a state-sponsored entertainment and sports festival that happens in Saudi Arabia’s capital every year from October to March. It started in 2019 as part of Saudi Vision 2030, the broad national effort to increase tourism in the country, and has since exploded in popularity and size. The event is organized by different zones and attractions, which range from highlighting Saudi culture to showcasing various athletic spectacles, as well as international food and entertainment. If you’re planning a trip to Saudi Arabia this winter, make sure to spend a few days exploring this sprawling festival. Here’s what to look forward to during Riyadh Season 2023.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by موسم الرياض | Riyadh Season (@riyadhseason)

Boulevard Riyadh City

One of the festival’s most popular zones is making its triumphant return this year. Revamped with 60 percent new experiences, including a Barbie world, House of Hype VR experience, and Disney Castle with Disney-inspired shows, Boulevard Riyadh City – located in the Hittin neighborhood – is certainly the center of the action. Sports are a huge part of this zone, with the opening of a Legend Museum, the world’s largest museum dedicated to soccer that’s home to 30,000 pieces of memorabilia. The region’s very first striking gym, conceived in collaboration with Mike Tyson, will open its doors in this zone, and another museum, the CR7 museum, will be dedicated solely to the athletic feats of Cristiano Ronaldo. Two different world tennis championships and WWE matches (featuring John Cena) will also take place.

Boulevard World

Like Boulevard Riyadh City, Boulevard World is another favorite making a return this year. Expanded by almost 40 percent since last year, the zone contains a huge shopping area with over 1,180 shops, 120 restaurants, tons of artistic shows, and entertainment experiences designed to capture various international flavors. Explore different food stalls and markets to taste cuisines from all around the world, and listen to live musical performances from a variety of international artists. Think of it as Riyadh’s version of the Epcot World Showcase.

Wonder Garden Riyadh Season

A brand new zone this year, the Wonder Garden is the largest mobile amusement park ever built, located in the northern part of the city. The zone will feature over four amusement park gardens, and be home to over 70 rides and experiences, two arcade halls, 15 stores, 26 restaurants, and over 60 roaming acts and shows. When you’re not getting an adrenaline rush on one of the rides, you can hang out by Flamingo Lake with over 50 flamingos, or wander the Bloom area full of floral-inspired art installations. There’s also the Butterfly Garden, which has over 1,000 different types of butterflies.

New zones to look forward to

Wonder Garden isn’t the only new area coming to Riyadh Season 2023. You can also look forward to Boulevard Hall, Al-Murabba (a previously temporary zone now becoming permanent), and the Souk Al-Awalain shopping market (with a weekly auction). There’s also the Riyadh Zoo and Al Suwaidi Park. The zoo, which has previously made an appearance at the festival, has expanded by 25 percent with more animal attractions, as well as a park with diverse cultural events and musical performances.

Riyadh Season begins with a bang on October 28 with the Baddest Man on the Planet fight between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou.

Cheap Flights To the Caribbean: 9 Islands, Starting at $52 Each Way

It seems like hotel, food, and travel prices in the last two years have gone through the roof, but that doesn’t mean budget flights to the Caribbean are a thing of the past — it just means you may need to be a bit more flexible with when and where you go.

Below are nine of the best places to visit in the Caribbean this year or next, along with some exceptionally cheap flight fares we found. Note that flight prices usually follow a pattern: they generally climb over time, then get cheaper within a month or two of take off. So it may look like the cheapest prices for destinations below are all coming up soon, but in reality, there’s probably a good chance you’ll be able to find a similar fare at multiple times throughout the year. So check prices frequently before you book.

Tips for finding cheap flights to the Caribbean:Fly midweek: This one isn’t a surprise, but most flights are much cheaper if you do a midweek trip, or even something like Monday to Saturday. Trips that are Friday through Sunday, or Saturday to Saturday, will always be the most expensiveBe flexible: If your goal is to hang out on a beach for a few days, you can head to just about any Caribbean island. But you may be surprised to learn what some islands have to offer. For example, while Bonaire and Curaçao are known for scuba diving, you can actually find amazing scuba diving in St. Maarten. And yes, Cuba and Puerto Rico may be most known for salsa dancing, but you’ll find find plenty of lively dance nights at bars and clubs on Barbados.Fly to a cheaper airport: You can save potentially hundreds of dollars but flying to a different airport and leaving from there. Many cheap flights to the Caribbean are least expensive from nearby airports like Miami and Atlanta. So if you can fly to one of those airports (which you often can on budget airlines for under $100), you may still have a huge net savings. Just be sure to give yourself enough time to go out and back into security (TSA Precheck can help).Check multiple websites: Skyscanner is an excellent tool for comparing what months and days a flight is the least expensive, so we’ve included Skyscanner links below. However, Google Flights and Kayak Explore are also two useful tools for finding great deals on flights. So shop around if you’re super price-conscious.

We hope you love the flights and destinations we recommend! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to book a flight. Listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication.

Cheap flights to Aruba: from $52 each waycheap flights to the caribbean - flamingos in aruba

Aruba is an island in the southern Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Venezuela. It’s part of the group called the “ABC Islands,” along with the nearby islands of Curaçao and Bonaire. Of the three, Aruba is generally the least expensive and has the most variety for hotels, activities, and restaurants. It’s also known for beaches with powdery white sands and and some of the most crystal-clear water in the Caribbean, making it ideal for snorkeling. Eagle Beach is the largest beach on the island, and Palm Beach has plenty of places for everything from beachside cocktails to snorkel and kayak rentals.

And if you like national parks, look more into Aruba. It’s one of the best cheap flights to the Caribbean you can book to do on-land exploring, with a landscape adorned with cacti and divi-divi trees, shaped by centuries of trade winds. Arikok National Park showcases this rugged beauty, with hiking trails leading to natural wonders like the Fontein Cave and Natural Pool. Aruba also offers a taste of history in its capital, Oranjestad, where colorful Dutch colonial architecture stands proudly alongside modern boutiques and restaurants.

Slow season in Aruba is December to April, which makes that the cheapest time to visit. But you can visit year round, including in October, as Aruba is well removed from the region’s Hurricane Belt.

Cheap flights to Puerto Rico: from $87 each way old town san juan cheap flights to the caribbean

Great deals on cheap flights to San Juan:Flights from Washington, DC: as low as $53 one way (January)Flights from Chicago, IL: as low as $74 one way (January)Flights from Las Vegas, NV: as low as $84 one way (December)Flights from Detroit, MI: as low as $51 one way (February)

Puerto Rico will forever be one of the most attractive cheap flights to the Caribbean for a few reasons: first, Americans don’t need a passport, so it’s an extremely easy last-minute destination. It’s also warm when the mainland US is quite chilly, and since the vast majority of people speak both English and Spanish, it’s a pretty easy place to visit for travelers just starting to step out of their comfort zones.

One of the defining features that sets Puerto Rico apart is its rich cultural heritage. Influenced by a fusion of Indigenous Taíno, Spanish, and African traditions, the island has a vibrant arts scene, lively music (salsa!), and tantalizing cuisine that reflect its diverse roots. It also has quite a lot of variety in terms of terrain and ecosystems, from pristine white-sand beaches to lush rainforests; specifically, El Yunque National Forest. You can also kayak in a bioluminescent bay, explore centuries-old historic forts, bar hop through historic San Juan, or go spelunking in Rio Camuy Cave Park.

But it’s not all about San Juan. You can head to the southern part of the island to Ponce, called the “Pearl of the South.” It’s the island’s second-biggest city and is a little less touristed, with tons of museums, great food, and the popular Hacienda Buena Vista Coffee Plantation. And if you want to surf (or just like sitting on sunny beaches), head to the lower key town of Aguadilla. It’s not overly touristy (yet).

If you want the convenience of visiting the States with the adventure (and great food) of visiting the Caribbean, you’ll want to book a cheap flight to Puerto Rico ASAP — and they’re pretty cheap.

It’s no secret that passport processing has been moving slowly recently, so if you’re still waiting on yours, head to the US Virgin Islands. It’s one of the best cheap flights to the Caribbean you can book where just a drivers license is enough, as the USVI is an unincorporated territory of the United States.

The main islands are St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. Each of these islands boasts its own individual character and attractions. St. Thomas is the most populous and developed and known for its bustling capital, Charlotte Amalie, with a lively downtown districts and a busy marina and port. St. John, on the other hand, is renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty; Virgin Islands National Park covers much of the island. And St. Croix has the most history, with Danish colonial architecture in towns like Christiansted and Frederiksted, along with beautiful beaches.

The main airport is on St. Thomas, but in terms of travel between the islands, there are several convenient options available. Regular ferry services operate between St. Thomas and St. John, given their close proximity, making it relatively easy to explore both islands in a single trip. There are regular inter-island flights connecting the islands, too, providing a convenient way to move between them on one trip.

The Dominican Republic, which shares Hispaniola Island with Haiti, is known as the “Birthplace of the New World.” If you’re looking for cheap flights to the Caribbean where you can enjoy the outdoors and take in historical sites, the DR is a good choice.

The historic capital, Santo Domingo, has a beautifully preserved colonial zone that holds the distinction of being a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can take walking tours past sites like the Columbus Lighthouse and the Alcazar de Colon, or spend the evening tasting cocktails at historical bars like Pat’e Palo European Brasserie. Supposedly, it was a pirate hangout in the 1600s.

You’ll find pristine beaches stretch along both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Punta Cana, on the eastern coast, is famous for reasonably priced and luxurious all-inclusive resorts, so it’s a great destination if you just want a quick and relaxing trip to a warm-weather island this winter. But other good beach destinations include Puerto Plata, Samaná, and La Romana.

Outdoor-focused travelers can check out rainforests, soaring mountains, and unique attractions like the Cordillera Central mountain range. Or you could hike Pico Duarte, the highest peak in the Caribbean. Also leave time to check out the El Limón waterfall in Samaná and Los Haitises National Park. Music and dance are integral to Dominican life, and visitors can explore the local music scene along Santo Domingo’s Malecón, with merengue and bachata bars easy to find. And traditional Dominican Republic dishes are delightful fusion of flavors, offering traditional dishes such as sancocho (spicy beef stew) and mangu (mashed plantains).

Peak season for tourism is December through April, when it tends to be the least rainy. But the rainy season (summer) also tends to be cheaper.

Jamaica’s culture and history is rooted in African slavery and European colonialism, resulting in a vibrant and distinctive culture unlike any other island in the Caribbean. More recently, Jamaica has become renowned for reggae music, and the legacy of legendary musician Bob Marley is deeply ingrained in the island’s identity. So it’s one of the best cheap flights to the Caribbean to book if you’re looking for a cultural, musical, and generally lively vacation.

However, the island offers a wide range of natural attractions, including dozens of waterfalls the world-famous Blue Mountains. You can also tour coffee plantations or visit Dunns River Falls, where they filmed the James Bond Movie “Dr. No.”

Jamaica is also known for mouthwatering cuisine, with dishes like like jerk chicken and ackee and saltfish. Jamaica also has an excellent street food culture and local markets, which add to the island’s culinary charm.

Most people start their trips in Kingston, the capital, with attractions like the Bob Marley Museum and the National Gallery of Jamaica. Montego Bay, known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife, is also a popular destination. Ocho Rios boasts attractions like Dunn’s River Falls and Mystic Mountain, while Negril is famous for its stunning Seven Mile Beach and breathtaking sunsets. All have great hotels and budget-friendly Airbnbs.

High season in Jamaica ends in April, and Hurricane season doesn’t really get started until July, so April and May can be great months to visit.

In the Caribbean, Saint Maarten stands out for its unique blend of Dutch and French influences, breathtaking scenery, and vibrant culture. The island blends two European cultures in a one tropical paradise. The Dutch side is known as Sint Maarten, and the French side is called Saint-Martin. The Dutch side is known for its bustling casinos, duty-free shopping, affordable hotels,  activities like sunset tours and kayaking, and vibrant nightlife in places like the capital Philipsburg. The French side offers a more laid-back, European ambiance with charming villages, boutique shops, and a strong culinary scene. Fortunately, it’s easy to move between the two.

Visitors can work on their tans at Maho Beach. It’s famous for its proximity to Princess Juliana International Airport, and airplanes swoop down directly over the beach before landing. Orient Beach, on the French side, is another beloved spot, known for its lively atmosphere and water sports.

Adventure-seekers can explore Saint Maarten’s natural beauty through hiking trails, zip-lining, and snorkeling excursions. The Loterie Farm Nature Reserve on the French side provides a lush escape into the island’s interior, offering hiking trails, a treetop zip line course, and a serene pool area. And the Flying Dutchman, on the Dutch side, is the steepest zip line in the world, offering great views of nearby islands like St. Barth.

St. Maarten also has excellent scuba diving and snorkeling, and is especially known for wreck diving. It’s also the hub for many of the best ferry route in the Caribbean. So if you know you want cheap flights to the Caribbean, but don’t know which island you want to visit, pick St. Maarten. Ferry service will take you to St. Barts, Anguilla, or even Saba.

Barbados is sometimes called the “Little England” of the Caribbean due to its long history as a British colony. This colonial influence is still evident in large aspects of the culture (its parliamentary system) and smaller aspects, too (its love for cricket). Barbados also has a distinct accent and a strong sense of national identity, making it different from other Caribbean nations that may feel more alike.

One notable feature is Barbados’ geography. Unlike many other Caribbean islands, Barbados is relatively flat and lacks the volcanic or mountainous terrain found elsewhere. This results in a unique landscape characterized by rolling hills, limestone caves, and beautiful coral beaches with calm, clear waters. Barbados is famous for its vibrant festivals and celebrations, such as Crop Over, which showcases the island’s rich cultural heritage and love for music, dance, and colorful costumes. Its bustling capital, Bridgetown, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers a blend of historical sites like the Parliament Buildings and modern amenities. So if you’re more into lounging, cultural activities, or culinary travel, booking a cheap flight to the Caribbean island of Barbados may be a good idea.

Oh, and Barbados is known for one other thing: rum. Between distilleries, tasting rooms, and walking and factory tours, you’ll have no shortage of places to find the island’s most well-known spirit.

Cheap flights to the Turks and Caicos: from $175 each wayturks and caicos cheap flights to the caribbean

Photo: jpbarcelos/Shutterstock

Great deals on cheap flights to Turks and Caicos:Flights from NYC: as low as $222 one way (January)Flights from Atlanta, GA: as low as $219 one way (January)Flights from Boston, MA: as low was $180 one way (December-April)Flights from Washington, DC: as low as $175 one way (December-April)

Turks and Caicos is considered part of the Caribbean, but it’s not actually in the Caribbean Sea. It’s in the Atlantic Ocean, to the east of the Bahamas, so it has a more arid climate compared to the lush and humid tropical landscapes of many other Caribbean destinations.

Turks and Caicos is home to the third-largest coral reef system in the world, so look for cheap flights to this Caribbean island if you’re an avid snorkeler or diver. Most hotels are on the islands of Providenciales, North Caicos, and Grand Turk, so the other islands are mostly undeveloped. On them, you’ll find extensive cave systems, lush landscapes, and historical sites like the plantation ruins at Wade’s Green.

Food aficionados shouldn’t miss traditional dishes using conch, readily available on the island. You’ll find lots of various preparations, though cracked conch is probably the most popular. In terms of hotels, you’ll find everything: luxury resorts that feel like you’re on St. Barths (with the prices to match) or more budget-friendly dive hotels with open-air bungalows and easy access to reefs.

Low season is June to November, mostly because that’s when hurricane season is. Since the islands are solidly in the Hurricane Belt, you may not want to plan for those months (or may at least want to wait and book last-minute based on how the weather is looking).

Cheap flights to Dominica: from $199 each waydominica waterfall in the caribbean

Don’t confuse Dominica with the Dominican Republic — they’re two totally different countries. Dominica is often referred to as the “Nature Island of the Caribbean,” with much of the country undeveloped. Unlike in the DR, you won’t find many all-inclusive, budget-friendly resorts for a quick long weekend. But what you will find if you book a cheap flight to the Caribbean destination is an abundance of eco-adventures.

With more than 300 miles of hiking trails, it’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. A must-visit attraction is the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site home to Boiling Lake, Titou Gorge, and Trafalgar Falls. The island’s volcanic activity also created lots of natural hot springs, like the ones found at Wotten Waven and Soufrière, where the warm and mineral-rich waters are an ideal place to relax surrounded by jungle.

Dominica’s natural beauty continues below the surface, making it a very popular snorkeling destination. Good sites you won’t want to miss include Champagne Reef, named for the bubbles that rise from the geothermal vents on the seafloor; the Salisbury Marine Reserve, known for clear water and very healthy reefs; and Scott’s Head Pinnacle, so named for the unique underwater shape of the reef.

The Best Foods To Try When Visiting Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is the largest country in the Middle East, and it’s culture and traditions have proliferated throughout the region. This is particularly true when it comes to food. The country’s arid climate and nomadic history have given rise to cuisine distinct in flavor and character, reflecting the bounty of the desert through the use of spices, rice, dates, fruits, milk, and meat.

There are various dishes that a Westerner visiting Saudi Arabia for the first time should expect to encounter whether visiting the desert oasis of AlUla, the magic of Hegra, or urban Riyadh.

Traditional breakfast in Saudi Arabia

Breakfast can be a relatively simple affair in Saudi Arabia. A spread of bread, cheese, and jam (typically date jam) is most typical. For something that involves a little more preparation, there’s shakshuka (eggs poached in a flavorful spiced tomato sauce) and banana masoub (a type of bread pudding).

Eating in Saudi Arabia during Ramadan

Visiting Saudi Arabia during Ramadan is a whole different experience, both culinary and cultural. It’s important to remember that Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country, and many of the same rules apply here as when visiting any Muslim countries during Ramadan.

This month-long period in spring is considered the most sacred month of the year for people of the Muslim faith. During this time, followers fasts every day from dawn to sunset to focus on spiritual discipline and contemplation. Smoking cigarettes and engaging in any sexual activity are also strictly prohibited. Businesses and schools may reduce their hours during the day or close completely, and special prayers are recited in the early morning and at night.

Fasting during Ramadan entails abstaining from all food and liquids between sunrise and sunset. What does this mean for visitors? Well, while travelers to Saudi Arabia aren’t expected to adhere to the rules of Ramadan, it’s important to be aware that since many restaurants will be closed, there won’t be many dining options available. It’s also considered extremely rude to eat or drink on the street (or anywhere in public) during Ramadan, so your meals will have to be consumed in private.

If you’re big on evening meals, however, Ramadan can be an interesting time to share a midnight feast with your Saudi friends. As you can imagine, people are pretty hungry after fasting all day, so they break their fast with a large meal after sundown. Thareed is one of the most traditional Ramadan evening meals. A spicy lamb stew, thareed is eaten with a thin flatbread, and was purportedly one of the Prophet Mohammed’s favorite dishes.

As for food restrictions outside of Ramadan, eating pork is forbidden year-round, as is drinking alcohol. Though these rules are rooted in Islam, foreigners are expected to abide by them.

The best foods to try when visiting Saudi Arabia

Dishes like matabaq, shakshuka, and thareed are classics, but they’re far from the only dishes you’ll find around the country. These are the other foods you should have on your radar.

MatabaqMurtabak or martabak, also mutabbaq, is a stuffed pancake or pan-fried bread which is commonly found in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Thailand.

Photo: Papa Annur/Shutterstock

One of the most popular street foods in Saudi Arabia is matabaq. This snack is made with thinly rolled dough that’s folded into a square around a filling of minced meat (typically chicken or mutton), eggs, vegetables, lemon, chiles, and spices before being fried. Exactly what makes it inside largely depends on the place it’s made, with variations that swap out the meat or egg, use different types of spices, or even make sweet varieties with fruit and cream.

KabsaChicken kabsa - homemade arabian rice, top view

Photo: hussein farar/Shutterstock

The national dish of Saudi Arabia, kabsa is a staple of Saudi cuisine and one of the best Arabic dishes you’ll find across the Middle East. Made by cooking meat (often chicken, but shrimp, camel, or fish are also sometimes used) in water with rice and spices, this lunch dish is typically served on a large platter alongside salad. The name means “squeeze” or “press,” because cooking it involves pressing the ingredients in a single pot during cooking so the flavor permeates throughout. It’s the spices that really make this dish come alive, which most commonly involves clove, cinnamon, black pepper, saffron, and black lime.

MandiMandi is a traditional dish from Yemen of meat, rice, and spices. It is now very popular in other areas of the Arabian Peninsula, and it is also common in Egypt and Levant and Turkey.

Photo: Alaa AbuMadi/Shutterstock

One of the most traditional dishes originating on the Arabian Peninsula (specifically Yemen), mandi is a fairly straightforward rice and meat dish that generally uses lamb, goat, camel, or chicken. The most distinctive feature, however, is how it’s cooked. Mandi is cooked inside a pit, usually a tannour (clay oven). Dry wood is placed inside the pit, or oven, and burned until the wood becomes charcoal. The meat is boiled with whole spices while suspended inside the tannour above rice, and then the pit is closed and allowed to cook for up to eight hours. So, clearly, you’ll need a fair amount of patience to enjoy a mandi meal, but it’s worth the wait.

ShawarmaChef preparing and making Traditional Turkish Doner Kebab meat. Shawarma or gyros. Turkish, greek or middle eastern arab style chicken doner kebab food on isolated white.

Photo: Hakan Tanak/Shutterstock

A staple across the region, shawarma can be found pretty much all over the Middle East — as well as pretty much any city in the world with a Middle Eastern cultural presence. Originating during the era of the Ottoman Empire, shawarma is a pita wrap containing meat, tomatoes and other vegetables, lettuce, pickles, and sauce. The meat is marinated and placed on a spit, which turns slowly in front of a fire or other heat source before being sliced off. The meat could be anything, but is usually lamb, chicken, beef, veal, turkey, or mutton that’s spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, paprika, cumin, and turmeric.

Ka’akka'ak saudi arabia dessert

Photo: yousef tarek/Shutterstock

While dates are probably the most common sweet snack, ka’ak is among the most popular Middle Eastern desserts (and there are many, many incredible Middle Eastern desserts). The category refers to a variety of biscuits. In its simplest form, ka’ak is a hard, dry, corkscrew-shaped pastry that’s baked with sesame seeds and fermented with chickpeas. Inside, it can be filled with things like ground walnuts, dates, and pistachios, and it’s commonly eaten as a street food.

JallabArabian juice of jallab served in holy month ramadan

Photo: diplomedia/Shutterstock

Even sweeter than ka’ak is jallab, a fruit syrup drink made with dates, grape molasses, grenadine syrup, rose water, and carob (a tree fruit that tastes somewhat similar to chocolate). It’s often smoked with Arabic incense to give it a strong aroma and soothing flavor. Beyond Saudi Arabia, jallab is popular in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt.

The Rally Hotel Is Denver’s Freshest Take on Urban Lodging

New urban hotels regularly promise a fresh take on big-city lodging. Thing is, all too often, hotels fail to be much more than cookie-cutter cutouts of high-end properties found in other cities. The Rally Hotel at McGregor Square, the baseball-themed commercial hub adjacent to Denver’s Coors Field, breaks this mold with an experience as intoxicating as the roar of the crown after a dinger bounces off the left field concourse across the street. The hotel, the newest in Denver’s Lower Downtown (LoDo) neighborhood, features 182 rooms rising above the McGregor Square complex, also home to a food hall, beer garden, and shopping. Immediately upon walking through the doors, it felt to me like a spirited spot to spend a night in a bustling entertainment district just two blocks from Denver’s Union Station, which provides direct access to Denver International Airport and other attractions via local rail lines and bus routes.

Guests traveling with a dog can get a custom Rally dog bandana at check-in, in addition to dog beds, bowls, and treats available upon request.

Guestrooms at The Rally Hotel at McGregor SquarePhoto: Abigail Brown/The Rally HotelPhoto: Abigail Brown/The Rally Hotel

The rooms at the hotel feel clean, spacious, and contemporary (some rooms are perched at exactly 5,280 feet above sea level on the “Mile High Floor,” a nod to the equally-elevated Purple Row of seats at the stadium) and feature curated art, distinct furniture and furnishings, and comfortable beds.

The 182 guest rooms and 29 suites span 16 different layouts across room types, including a variety of ADA-accessible options. Every guestroom features a mini-bar with local grab-and-go snacks and drinks for purchase, a Keurig, a book bundle curated by Denver’s iconic Tattered Cover Book Store, a mini fridge, a Bluetooth speaker, and Beekman 1802™ bath products.

Design choices differ in themes — like the “All-Star” rooms, which feature leather-finished decor and signature plaid carpeting, giving off All-American baseball vibes. Or, the “Mile High” rooms, which, yes — are perched at 5,280 feet above sea level, feature decor that’s inspired by the natural colors of a sunset over The Rockies and Coors Field (including a purple, black, Colorado orange color scheme). The “MVP King Suites” include more than 500+ square feet of space and a separate bedroom and living area with a sofa. As a unique accommodation, the Mile High King Corner Suite sleeps four people — featuring a master bedroom overlooking Coors Field, a separate living area, and a corner nook with a bunk bed with twin-sized beds.

The penthouse options sit on the top floor and boast stunning views of the city. These include amenities like a kitchenette, a bar equipped with top-shelf selections, custom furniture, locally curated artwork,1.5 baths, and a separate living room area with towering floor-to-ceiling windows.

Both hotel guests and the dining public can eat at the on-site restaurant, The OG, which prides itself as a daytime neighborhood brunch spot serving classic American menu items alongside what it labels as playful, contemporary flair. Fan favorites on the menu include the Signature Doughnut Sliders and boozy milkshakes, which make for a memorable meal.

Across the hallway, The Rally Bar serves “elevated twists on ballpark staples,” with signature drinks such as “Southpaw’s Old Fashioned” made with Breckenridge Bourbon, and bites like Rally Snack Mix and entrees of steak and burgers. For breakfast or a snack, stop at The Grandstand Café, a café with coffee first thing in the morning and a bar with snacks, cocktails, and entertainment after 5 p.m.

Up on the roof, High Society acts as a seasonal rooftop bar and grill serving handcrafted cocktails and poolside bites by day and night. The Skybridge Rooftop Deck plunge pool and hot tub boasts sunny lounge chairs and spectacular views of the city and mountains.

Guests who are of legal drinking age can enjoy a complimentary check-in pour of the hotel’s exclusive Mile High Jinks craft beer or Bubble Universe sparkling wine. Mile High Jinks is a locally brewed beer made exclusively for The Rally Hotel in collaboration with Colorado Native. The beer has a slight cherry aroma and an almost ripe banana flavor with herbal, hoppy-tasting notes and a smooth honey finish featuring four different malted barleys: Colorado Pale, Colorado Pilsner, Colorado Munich, Colorado Honey Malt and additional locally sourced Colorado wildflower honey. All the grain sourced for this hyper-local beer comes from Colorado and is malted, to varying degrees, in nearby Boulder.

There’s complimentary drip coffee at The Grandstand Café from 7 until 10:30 a.m. daily and free Coca-Cola Floats or a scoop of ice cream served in a souvenir Rockies helmet from 4 until 6 p.m. daily during Social Hour at The Grandstand Café.

Fitness fanatics will enjoy the on-site Skybridge Fitness Center, which has its own yoga room and a variety of weightlifting equipment and cardio machines. I loved the views from this gym that seemingly floated in the sky out above the stadium.

But one of my favorite free amenities was the complimentary courtesy shuttle car that will take guests to local destinations within a two-mile radius — meaning we didn’t have to worry about renting a car once we got to the property.

The on-site experienceMcGregor Square in Denver

Photo: Brianna Buffo/The Rally Hotel

I spent the night in one of the MVP King Suites, which was incredibly spacious and showcased some seriously spectacular sights of the city from my balcony. I loved lounging on the comfortable couch in the living area and basking in all the natural light the floor-to-ceiling windows filtered in. My room faced inward toward the city instead of out toward the ballpark, but every time I went to the gym, I was able to admire a view that looked quite literally straight into Coors Field, which felt especially majestic.

I am a big sports fan, myself — and admired how all of the decor in the room felt baseball-themed — but not too aggressively so. It was just the right amount of “all-American” sportiness (think: cabinets that subtly resemble gym lockers and furnishings that remind you of being inside of a stadium) without making someone who might not be a huge sports fan feel hassled.

Another detail I admired about being on-site was the sense of community within the walls of this hotel. Just spending time in the lobby with its authentic decor and “rah-rah” spirit is energizing. It’s a fantastic spot to spend time in a trendy neighborhood in downtown Denver for local baseball fans and visiting boutique hotel lovers alike.

Most are free but those from Monterosso to Vernazza and from Vernazza to Corniglia require a Cinque Terre Trekking Card. After a landslide caused the closure of the Path of Love in 2012, this prized oceanfront hiking trail uniting Manarola and Riomaggiore is slated to reopen in 2024 in accordance with new sustainability measures.

In terms of where to stay in Cinque Terre, Riomaggiore – the largest, liveliest, and most southerly village – has a motley of activities for all tastes. Monterosso lures families to the north with its sandy beaches and promise of fewer ups and downs. The postcard-pretty streets and medieval ruins of Vernazza and the grapevine-drenched Manarola cast their spell on couples and honeymooners. Perched on a rocky promontory 377 steps above the main village, Corniglia is the quietest and least-visited.

Apartment rentals and vacation cottages are available in all five fraziones. Offering tantalizing views of the Ligurian Riviera and bucket loads of charm, add these Airbnbs in Cinque Terre to your wishlist today

Vail is Colorado’s take on Bavaria. Alpenhaus-style architecture lines the village, and the well-trimmed culture of mountain living is on full display in the pubs, restaurants, and shops. There’s also the legendary ski resort itself, the largest in Colorado and the type of place even a seasoned skier or boarder could spend the entire season exploring and still not have seen it all. Vail is comprised of three villages — Vail Village, Lionshead Village, and East Vail. Here are top options to rent an Airbnb in Vail to capture that Bavarian magic for your next mountain holiday.

We hope you love the top Airbnb in Vail options we recommend! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to book a stay. Listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication.
