Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Season Is One of the World’s Largest, Most Impressive Winter Festivals
As the hotter weather cools down in the northern hemisphere, people are getting ready for the chilly (or at least, chillier) weather and all the travel experiences that come with it. In Saudi Arabia, the cooler months are among the best times to visit the country. One of the reasons is for the monumental event that is Riyadh Season.
Riyadh Season is a state-sponsored entertainment and sports festival that happens in Saudi Arabia’s capital every year from October to March. It started in 2019 as part of Saudi Vision 2030, the broad national effort to increase tourism in the country, and has since exploded in popularity and size. The event is organized by different zones and attractions, which range from highlighting Saudi culture to showcasing various athletic spectacles, as well as international food and entertainment. If you’re planning a trip to Saudi Arabia this winter, make sure to spend a few days exploring this sprawling festival. Here’s what to look forward to during Riyadh Season 2023.

Boulevard Riyadh City
One of the festival’s most popular zones is making its triumphant return this year. Revamped with 60 percent new experiences, including a Barbie world, House of Hype VR experience, and Disney Castle with Disney-inspired shows, Boulevard Riyadh City – located in the Hittin neighborhood – is certainly the center of the action. Sports are a huge part of this zone, with the opening of a Legend Museum, the world’s largest museum dedicated to soccer that’s home to 30,000 pieces of memorabilia. The region’s very first striking gym, conceived in collaboration with Mike Tyson, will open its doors in this zone, and another museum, the CR7 museum, will be dedicated solely to the athletic feats of Cristiano Ronaldo. Two different world tennis championships and WWE matches (featuring John Cena) will also take place.
Boulevard WorldLike Boulevard Riyadh City, Boulevard World is another favorite making a return this year. Expanded by almost 40 percent since last year, the zone contains a huge shopping area with over 1,180 shops, 120 restaurants, tons of artistic shows, and entertainment experiences designed to capture various international flavors. Explore different food stalls and markets to taste cuisines from all around the world, and listen to live musical performances from a variety of international artists. Think of it as Riyadh’s version of the Epcot World Showcase.
Wonder Garden Riyadh SeasonA brand new zone this year, the Wonder Garden is the largest mobile amusement park ever built, located in the northern part of the city. The zone will feature over four amusement park gardens, and be home to over 70 rides and experiences, two arcade halls, 15 stores, 26 restaurants, and over 60 roaming acts and shows. When you’re not getting an adrenaline rush on one of the rides, you can hang out by Flamingo Lake with over 50 flamingos, or wander the Bloom area full of floral-inspired art installations. There’s also the Butterfly Garden, which has over 1,000 different types of butterflies.
New zones to look forward toWonder Garden isn’t the only new area coming to Riyadh Season 2023. You can also look forward to Boulevard Hall, Al-Murabba (a previously temporary zone now becoming permanent), and the Souk Al-Awalain shopping market (with a weekly auction). There’s also the Riyadh Zoo and Al Suwaidi Park. The zoo, which has previously made an appearance at the festival, has expanded by 25 percent with more animal attractions, as well as a park with diverse cultural events and musical performances.
Riyadh Season begins with a bang on October 28 with the Baddest Man on the Planet fight between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou.
Cheap Flights To the Caribbean: 9 Islands, Starting at $52 Each Way
It seems like hotel, food, and travel prices in the last two years have gone through the roof, but that doesn’t mean budget flights to the Caribbean are a thing of the past — it just means you may need to be a bit more flexible with when and where you go.
Below are nine of the best places to visit in the Caribbean this year or next, along with some exceptionally cheap flight fares we found. Note that flight prices usually follow a pattern: they generally climb over time, then get cheaper within a month or two of take off. So it may look like the cheapest prices for destinations below are all coming up soon, but in reality, there’s probably a good chance you’ll be able to find a similar fare at multiple times throughout the year. So check prices frequently before you book.
Tips for finding cheap flights to the Caribbean:Fly midweek: This one isn’t a surprise, but most flights are much cheaper if you do a midweek trip, or even something like Monday to Saturday. Trips that are Friday through Sunday, or Saturday to Saturday, will always be the most expensiveBe flexible: If your goal is to hang out on a beach for a few days, you can head to just about any Caribbean island. But you may be surprised to learn what some islands have to offer. For example, while Bonaire and Curaçao are known for scuba diving, you can actually find amazing scuba diving in St. Maarten. And yes, Cuba and Puerto Rico may be most known for salsa dancing, but you’ll find find plenty of lively dance nights at bars and clubs on Barbados.Fly to a cheaper airport: You can save potentially hundreds of dollars but flying to a different airport and leaving from there. Many cheap flights to the Caribbean are least expensive from nearby airports like Miami and Atlanta. So if you can fly to one of those airports (which you often can on budget airlines for under $100), you may still have a huge net savings. Just be sure to give yourself enough time to go out and back into security (TSA Precheck can help).Check multiple websites: Skyscanner is an excellent tool for comparing what months and days a flight is the least expensive, so we’ve included Skyscanner links below. However, Google Flights and Kayak Explore are also two useful tools for finding great deals on flights. Eagle Beach is the largest beach on the island, and Palm Beach has plenty of places for everything from beachside cocktails to snorkel and kayak rentals.
And if you like national parks, look more into Aruba. It’s one of the best cheap flights to the Caribbean you can book to do on-land exploring, with a landscape adorned with cacti and divi-divi trees, shaped by centuries of trade winds. Arikok National Park showcases this rugged beauty, with hiking trails leading to natural wonders like the Fontein Cave and Natural Pool. Aruba also offers a taste of history in its capital, Oranjestad, where colorful Dutch colonial architecture stands proudly alongside modern boutiques and restaurants.
Slow season in Aruba is December to April, which makes that the cheapest time to visit. But you can visit year round, including in October, as Aruba is well removed from the region’s Hurricane Belt.

It’s also warm when the mainland US is quite chilly, and since the vast majority of people speak both English and Spanish, it’s a pretty easy place to visit for travelers just starting to step out of their comfort zones.
One of the defining features that sets Puerto Rico apart is its rich cultural heritage. Influenced by a fusion of Indigenous Taíno, Spanish, and African traditions, the island has a vibrant arts scene, lively music (salsa!), and tantalizing cuisine that reflect its diverse roots. It also has quite a lot of variety in terms of terrain and ecosystems, from pristine white-sand beaches to lush rainforests; specifically, El Yunque National Forest. You can also kayak in a bioluminescent bay, explore centuries-old historic forts, bar hop through historic San Juan, or go spelunking in Rio Camuy Cave Park.
But it’s not all about San Juan. You can head to the southern part of the island to Ponce, called the “Pearl of the South.” It’s the island’s second-biggest city and is a little less touristed, with tons of museums, great food, and the popular Hacienda Buena Vista Coffee Plantation. And if you want to surf (or just like sitting on sunny beaches), head to the lower key town of Aguadilla. It’s not overly touristy (yet).
If you want the convenience of visiting the States with the adventure (and great food) of visiting the Caribbean, you’ll want to book a cheap flight to Puerto Rico ASAP — and they’re pretty cheap.

There are regular inter-island flights connecting the islands, too, providing a convenient way to move between them on one trip.

Punta Cana, on the eastern coast, is famous for reasonably priced and luxurious all-inclusive resorts, so it’s a great destination if you just want a quick and relaxing trip to a warm-weather island this winter. But other good beach destinations include Puerto Plata, Samaná, and La Romana.
Outdoor-focused travelers can check out rainforests, soaring mountains, and unique attractions like the Cordillera Central mountain range. Or you could hike Pico Duarte, the highest peak in the Caribbean. Also leave time to check out the El Limón waterfall in Samaná and Los Haitises National Park. Music and dance are integral to Dominican life, and visitors can explore the local music scene along Santo Domingo’s Malecón, with merengue and bachata bars easy to find. And traditional Dominican Republic dishes are delightful fusion of flavors, offering traditional dishes such as sancocho (spicy beef stew) and mangu (mashed plantains).
Peak season for tourism is December through April, when it tends to be the least rainy. But the rainy season (summer) also tends to be cheaper.

Saudi Arabia is the largest country in the Middle East, and it’s culture and traditions have proliferated throughout the region. This is particularly true when it comes to food. The country’s arid climate and nomadic history have given rise to cuisine distinct in flavor and character, reflecting the bounty of the desert through the use of spices, rice, dates, fruits, milk, and meat.
There are various dishes that a Westerner visiting Saudi Arabia for the first time should expect to encounter whether visiting the desert oasis of AlUla, the magic of Hegra, or urban Riyadh.
Traditional breakfast in Saudi ArabiaBreakfast can be a relatively simple affair in Saudi Arabia. A spread of bread, cheese, and jam (typically date jam) is most typical. For something that involves a little more preparation, there’s shakshuka (eggs poached in a flavorful spiced tomato sauce) and banana masoub (a type of bread pudding).
Eating in Saudi Arabia during RamadanVisiting Saudi Arabia during Ramadan is a whole different experience, both culinary and cultural. It’s important to remember that Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country, and many of the same rules apply here as when visiting any Muslim countries during Ramadan.
This month-long period in spring is considered the most sacred month of the year for people of the Muslim faith. During this time, followers fasts every day from dawn to sunset to focus on spiritual discipline and contemplation. Smoking cigarettes and engaging in any sexual activity are also strictly prohibited. Businesses and schools may reduce their hours during the day or close completely, and special prayers are recited in the early morning and at night.
Fasting during Ramadan entails abstaining from all food and liquids between sunrise and sunset. What does this mean for visitors? Well, while travelers to Saudi Arabia aren’t expected to adhere to the rules of Ramadan, it’s important to be aware that since many restaurants will be closed, there won’t be many dining options available. It’s also considered extremely rude to eat or drink on the street (or anywhere in public) during Ramadan, so your meals will have to be consumed in private.
If you’re big on evening meals, however, Ramadan can be an interesting time to share a midnight feast with your Saudi friends. As you can imagine, people are pretty hungry after fasting all day, so they break their fast with a large meal after sundown. Thareed is one of the most traditional Ramadan evening meals. A spicy lamb stew, thareed is eaten with a thin flatbread, and was purportedly one of the Prophet Mohammed’s favorite dishes.
As for food restrictions outside of Ramadan, eating pork is forbidden year-round, as is drinking alcohol. Though these rules are rooted in Islam, foreigners are expected to abide by them.

A staple across the region, shawarma can be found pretty much all over the Middle East — as well as pretty much any city in the world with a Middle Eastern cultural presence. Originating during the era of the Ottoman Empire, shawarma is a pita wrap containing meat, tomatoes and other vegetables, lettuce, pickles, and sauce. The meat is marinated and placed on a spit, which turns slowly in front of a fire or other heat source before being sliced off. The meat could be anything, but is usually lamb, chicken, beef, veal, turkey, or mutton that’s spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, paprika, cumin, and turmeric.

While dates are probably the most common sweet snack, ka’ak is among the most popular Middle Eastern desserts (and there are many, many incredible Middle Eastern desserts). The category refers to a variety of biscuits. In its simplest form, ka’ak is a hard, dry, corkscrew-shaped pastry that’s baked with sesame seeds and fermented with chickpeas. Inside, it can be filled with things like ground walnuts, dates, and pistachios, and it’s commonly eaten as a street food.

Even sweeter than ka’ak is jallab, a fruit syrup drink made with dates, grape molasses, grenadine syrup, rose water, and carob (a tree fruit that tastes somewhat similar to chocolate). It’s often smoked with Arabic incense to give it a strong aroma and soothing flavor. Beyond Saudi Arabia, jallab is popular in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt.

Fan favorites on the menu include the Signature Doughnut Sliders and boozy milkshakes, which make for a memorable meal.
Across the hallway, The Rally Bar serves “elevated twists on ballpark staples,” with signature drinks such as “Southpaw’s Old Fashioned” made with Breckenridge Bourbon, and bites like Rally Snack Mix and entrees of steak and burgers. For breakfast or a snack, stop at The Grandstand Café, a café with coffee first thing in the morning and a bar with snacks, cocktails, and entertainment after 5 p.m.
Up on the roof, High Society acts as a seasonal rooftop bar and grill serving handcrafted cocktails and poolside bites by day and night. The Skybridge Rooftop Deck plunge pool and hot tub boasts sunny lounge chairs and spectacular views of the city and mountains.

Mile High Jinks is a locally brewed beer made exclusively for The Rally Hotel in collaboration with Colorado Native. The beer has a slight cherry aroma and an almost ripe banana flavor with herbal, hoppy-tasting notes and a smooth honey finish featuring four different malted barleys: Colorado Pale, Colorado Pilsner, Colorado Munich, Colorado Honey Malt and additional locally sourced Colorado wildflower honey. All the grain sourced for this hyper-local beer comes from Colorado and is malted, to varying degrees, in nearby Boulder.
There’s complimentary drip coffee at The Grandstand Café from 7 until 10:30 a.m. daily and free Coca-Cola Floats or a scoop of ice cream served in a souvenir Rockies helmet from 4 until 6 p.m. daily during Social Hour at The Grandstand Café.
Fitness fanatics will enjoy the on-site Skybridge Fitness Center, which has its own yoga room and a variety of weightlifting equipment and cardio machines. I loved the views from this gym that seemingly floated in the sky out above the stadium.
But one of my favorite free amenities was the complimentary courtesy shuttle car that will take guests to local destinations within a two-mile radius — meaning we didn’t have to worry about renting a car once we got to the property.

I spent the night in one of the MVP King Suites, which was incredibly spacious and showcased some seriously spectacular sights of the city from my balcony. I loved lounging on the comfortable couch in the living area and basking in all the natural light the floor-to-ceiling windows filtered in. My room faced inward toward the city instead of out toward the ballpark, but every time I went to the gym, I was able to admire a view that looked quite literally straight into Coors Field, which felt especially majestic.
I am a big sports fan, myself — and admired how all of the decor in the room felt baseball-themed — but not too aggressively so. It was just the right amount of “all-American” sportiness (think: cabinets that subtly resemble gym lockers and furnishings that remind you of being inside of a stadium) without making someone who might not be a huge sports fan feel hassled.
Another detail I admired about being on-site was the sense of community within the walls of this hotel. Just spending time in the lobby with its authentic decor and “rah-rah” spirit is energizing. It’s a fantastic spot to spend time in a trendy neighborhood in downtown Denver for local baseball fans and visiting boutique hotel lovers alike.
