Southwest Is Offering Flights in the Path of the Total Solar Eclipse Next Year

Most of the time, we find ourselves witnessing celestial events with our feet on the ground. It’s not like a concert where you can buy a front row ticket to get closer to the action. Well, that’s until Southwest announced its plan to operate flights in the direct and partial paths of the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. The path of totality of the eclipse is slated to pass across several US states, including Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, New York, Ohio, and Texas, and now passengers can book flights to get a truly special perspective of this rare phenomenon.

“Our Meteorology and Network Planning Teams identified the best opportunities for a potential view of this breathtaking sight,” said David Dillahunt, Chief Meteorologist at Southwest Airlines, in a press release. “With our flight schedule, we’re able to offer hundreds of seats in the sky to view the eclipse, and we look forward to showcasing our hospitality on this day while celebrating with our customers.”

Southwest’s Network and Schedule Planners specifically planned the flight schedule that day to coincide with the eclipse. These are the flights that give passengers the best chance of glimpsing the celestial phenomenon, with the first three offering the highest probability of getting a front row seat:

This Food-Focused Norway Hotel Has a Michelin-Star Restaurant and the Country’s ‘Best Breakfast’

I checked into the Britannia Hotel in Trondheim, Norway, with a slight cold. I was tired, congested, and run down from a back-to-back wedding weekend in Seattle and three-day cruise on the Norwegian coast. All I wanted to do when I got to the hotel was slip into a warm bath, eat a nourishing meal, and get a good night’s sleep before my flight home to San Francisco.

When I entered my room in the hotel’s historic building, I was too distracted by a plate of macarons wrapped neatly in front of a floor-to-ceiling mirror to notice that there was no tub in the bathroom. There was a TV remote on the desk but, curiously, no TV. I clicked the remote as I sunk my teeth into a perfectly airy yet densely chewy raspberry macaron. A screen appeared in the mirror. It was the first mirror TV I’d seen in person and the last technology I expected to find in a hotel dating back to 1897.

From the outside, the Britannia Hotel looks as stately, pale, and polished as the White House. That’s the historic building where roughly half of the hotel’s 200-plus rooms are located, as well as the grand reception area, spa, and six different dining and drinking concepts, including a one-Michelin-star restaurant housed in a former ballroom, a French-style brasserie, a cellar-style wine bar, and one of the city’s classiest cocktail bars. The current hotel, which reopened in 2019 after extensive renovations, also connects to an impressive new building that doubles its capacity.

Whether you stay in the new or historic building, the Britannia Hotel promises classical luxury and state-of-the-art amenities. Rooms without mirror TVs, for example, may have retractable ones built into marble counters, and the high-tech elevators are operated by touchscreens. Some modern touches exemplify the hotel’s hospitality rather than its technological refurbishments, such as the pillow menu that allows guests to personalize the hotel’s cloud-like Hästens beds as part of the nightly turndown service.

After selecting my ideal sleeping accouterments for the evening and finishing off the plate of freshly baked welcome pastries, my excitement ebbed into a sniffly sigh when I discovered the shower-only bathroom in my Superior 1897 Room — until I remembered the hotel spa.

Guests of any Scandinavian luxury hotel likely expect the spa to have a sauna, but the spa at the Britannia Hotel has three: a dry Nordic sauna, a wet sauna, and an infrared cabin, which share a space with a steam room and ice bath that’s adjacent to the spa’s lap and mineral pools. A handful of treatment rooms and a 24-hour fitness center with complimentary group offerings, such as yoga and spin classes, round out the wellness experiences at the Britannia Hotel.

I beelined for the saunas, hoping that they might clear my sinuses, before moving to the mineral pool for the soak I’d been craving. The balmy waters calmed my aching joints while the astral lights dome overhead soothed my regrets over having missed the northern lights on the cruise I’d taken earlier in the week.

The last thing I needed to recuperate fully was a good meal. That evening, the group of journalists I was traveling with met at the hotel’s Jonathan Grill for a steakhouse experience anchored by Japanese-barbecue-style grills. We began our meal with small bites centered on scallops and langoustines, two seafoods for which Trondheim is renowned. Dry-aged steak was plattered up for the main, which we each grilled to our preferred doneness right there at the table, alternating slices of perfectly marbled meat with forkfuls of buttery mashed potatoes, saucy mushrooms, and braised cabbage.

Each course was accompanied by a wine pairing that hinted at the hotel’s impressive collection. A fuller representation awaits guests who visit Vinbaren, the hotel’s wine bar, whose walls are lined with bottles of some of the world’s most coveted vintages. Instead, for an after-dinner drink, my group headed upstairs to the Britannia Bar, where leather-bound booklets describe signature cocktails that pay meticulously researched tribute to the history of Trondheim and the hotel itself.

The Britannia Bar’s cocktail menu was nominated as the Best Cocktail Menu in Norway at the Nordic-focused Bartenders’ Choice Awards in 2020. But it’s not the most impressive food-and-beverage acclaim that hotel has received. That honor goes to the Palmehaven restaurant, which won the Twinings Best Breakfast in Norway award in 2022 alongside fellow Trondheim hotel Scandic Nidelven.

The beautifully curated breakfast buffet is relatively small, which helps to keep the service more sustainable, alongside a la cart options such as eggs royale with fine Nordic smoked salmon, vegan crêpes with coconut cream, and caviar and morning bubbly for those interested. Palmehaven, which is set inside a palatial indoor courtyard-style hall dating to 1918, also serves lunch, puts on a kid-friendly afternoon tea service, and stages Artist in Residence concerts throughout the year.

I didn’t have a chance to try the breakfast during my brief stay at the Britannia Hotel. In part, that’s because my flight was very early in the morning, but it’s also because I wanted to spend every last minute I could in what has to be the most comfortable hotel bed I’ve ever had the pleasure of sleeping in.

But hey, there’s always next time. Because you better believe I’m going to return to a hotel that’s so comfortable it can cure the common cold.

Saudi Arabia Announces a Trio of Futuristic Hotels Built Into the Mountains of NEOM

NEOM is central to Saudi Arabia’s push to encourage tourism and emerge as one of the world’s leading vacation destinations. Al’Ula and mega-projects inside of NEOM such as The Line and a new island destination called Sindalah have been the biggest locations to make headlines lately, but there are other moving pieces equally worthy of getting excited about. Take, for example, Leyja, a mountainous region within NEOM slated to be developed as a major tourism hub with three new futuristic hotels built right into the mountains.

Stretching west from the Gulf of Aqaba in the northern part of the country between natural mountains off the coast of the Red Sea, Leyja will be the site of three sustainable and innovative hotel concepts. Designed by world-leading architects to blend in with the surrounding nature, the three properties will have 120 boutique rooms and suites.

The first will be designed with a focus on active adventure, aptly called Adventure Hotel. “Its unique location, folded into the cliff top and valley sides, lends itself to those seeking rock climbing and other high-octane experiences in the surrounding area,” the official press release says. The second property, Oasis Hotel, emerges from the rock to sit in the heart of the wadi’s largest oasis, serving as the perfect base for exploring the valley with unrivaled views of the landscape and nature reserve. The third property, Wellness Hotel, is planned as a retreat that blends into the surrounding area and “promotes longevity, with a high-tech, reflective facade mirroring the surrounding beauty and valley walls.” This allows the wadi’s natural passage through the property’s center, providing visitors with a unique and interactive experience. All three will bring luxury eco-tourism to the region.

But Leyja is more than just its futuristic hotels. The region will offer a variety of fine dining experiences helmed by world-renowned chefs, wellness facilities, stargazing, rooftop infinity pools, guided wadi walks, hiking trails, and mountain biking opportunities. These all will highlight the 1,300-feet-tall mountains.

The exact date of when these hotels will be open for business hasn’t yet been set. But as plans for NEOM continue to crystallize and more information becomes available, excitement for these hotels of the future will only grow.

Relax and Rejuvenate at These 8 Alpine Colorado Hot Springs

Nothing caps an epic alpine excursion like a soak in a thermal hot spring. Colorado is one of the best places in the country for exactly that experience, with dozens of spring-fed hot pools scattered across the Rockies from Steamboat Springs up north to Pagosa Springs down south. Each location is different, and that goes for both the pools themselves and the experience of visiting (and sometimes traveling to) each.

Before you hit the road, take a second to get up to speed with the best practices for visiting Colorado hot springs. The hot springs below are on a mix of private land (as is the case with hot springs resorts) and public land. Either way, they aren’t your home, so loud noise, obnoxious behavior, and nudity (outside of specified times and locations) are not acceptable or permitted. Always follow Leave No Trace principles and pack out everything you pack in (including empty beverage containers). Colorado hot springs etiquette is to not overcrowd the pools — give people space, and don’t overstay your welcome.

No matter which part of the state you plan to visit, here are the best Colorado hot springs resorts and primitive hot springs pools.

The best wild Colorado hot springsPiedra River Hot Springs (Pagosa Springs)

Piedra River Hot Springs are the “hack” of Colorado hot springs. North of Highway 160 between Pagosa Springs and Durango, this natural soak is hidden alongside the Piedra River and is reachable via a one-mile hike from the parking area. There are multiple pools available for soaking during most of the year, though in particularly low-water times (often late summer and early autumn), some areas may be too low for comfort. Spring is the best time to visit, once the snow has melted from the trail. The pools will be at their deepest and the warm water feels great after a day spent hiking in brisk mountain air.

How to get to Piedra River Hot Springs: Drive 20 miles west of Pagosa Springs on Highway 160 (or 40 miles east from Durango). Turn onto County Road 166 just past Chimney Rock. Continue up the dirt road for 6.7 miles. You’ll see the parking area at the intersection with Monument Park Road. Hike one mile from the Sheep Creek Trailhead.

Just west of Kremmling, Radium Hot Springs is among the most picturesque of wild Colorado hot springs. There’s one pool tucked off the Colorado River, and it’s hardly ever visited by anyone other than locals — probably because few others how to get there. But it’s a chance to soak near the Colorado Rover headwaters overlooking the river basin with the mighty Rockies rising on both sides. You’ll need Chacos, Keen river shoes, or the equivalent to pass the hike to get here.

How to get to Radium Hot Springs: You’ll need an AWD or 4WD vehicle. Exit Interstate 70 onto Highway 40 north. At Kremmling, turn left onto Highway 9. Proceed for two miles to Trough Springs Road and turn right. Proceed for 12 miles until it hits a 4×4 road, and follow the road for about a mile to the river. Park, make your way down to the river, and walk upstream for a couple minutes until you see the hot spring pool underneath a rock outcropping.

In the Maroon Bells Wilderness outside Aspen, Conundrum Hot Springs is Colorado’s most epic — but you have to work for the reward. Reaching Conundrum requires an 8.5-mile hike with 2,400 feet of elevation gain. Fortunately, Mount Sopris, The Maroon Bells, and the rest of the Elk Mountains are your backdrop for the hike, which literally couldn’t be more beautiful.

Because of the effort of reaching Conundrum, many people opt to camp in the vicinity and make an overnight trip out of it. Because of this, the springs can turn into a bit of a party scene after dark on busy evenings. There is now a permit system in place for camping, due to issues with overcrowding in recent years. For the most peaceful experience, start hiking at dusk and plan to hit the springs in the late morning.

How to get to Conundrum Hot Springs: From Aspen, turn right at the Highway 82 roundabout onto Castle Creek Road. Proceed for five miles and turn right on Conundrum Road. Proceed for 1.1 miles to the trailhead parking area. Pparking is prohibited along Conundrum Road and you will be ticketed or towed, so only park in the lot.

The best Colorado hot springs resort staysDurango Hot Springs Resort & Spa

Now and then, something that once was, becomes something much better. The newly refurbished Durango Hot Springs Resort & Spa proves this. The resort just north of the southwest Colorado town of Durango came under new ownership in 2020. This brought with it $14 million in renovations that have transformed the tired Trimble Hot Springs into a pristine mountainside relaxation oasis with 32 hot spring pools, two cold plunge tubs, and multiple food and drink options.

There’s also plenty for kids to do, with the entire east side of the resort dedicated to families. I visited with my wife and two-year-old daughter on a fall afternoon and the springs were a perfect compliment to the nearby hiking along Cascade Creek. Temperatures in the pools range from lukewarm to roasting, and it’s easy to alternate between them without feeling like you’re awkwardly encroaching on other parties (something that is rife in other, more swamped, hot springs resorts).

How to get there: From Durango, head 10 minutes north along the scenic Highway of Legends. Turn left at Trimble Lane, and you’ll see the parking area. From Grand Junction, head south on Highway 50, which becomes Highway 550 past Montrose (the same Highway of Legends), with the total drive taking about 3.5 hours.

The Springs Resort (Pagosa Springs)

Pagosa Springs hot springs tops many of a list of visitors’ “must-see sights” in Colorado. And the Springs Resort & Spa, downtown on the San Juan River, is an ideal setup for a relaxing mineral bath getaway. With 24 riverside geothermal baths ranging in temperature from lukewarm to the roasty “Lobster Pot,” you’d have to stay a weekend in order to try each one. The property also has a cafe and spa, and hotel guests can use the pools 24 hours a day. If you’re not staying there, you can buy a day pass online to use the pools on a reservation basis between 9 AM and 10 PM.

Insider’s tip: Add a dose of Scandinavian flare to your experience by moving from the hot springs to the much colder river, then back into the springs. It’s basically a homemade Scandinavian spa experience, and while it may or may not do much for your body, it’ll definitely help focus your mind.

How to get to Pagosa Hot Springs: Take US Highway 160 into Pagosa Springs from either the east (Denver, Colorado Springs, Alamosa) or west (Durango, Grand Junction). Turn south on to Hot Springs Boulevard and proceed for about half a mile. The parking lot will be on your right.

Iron Mountain Hot Springs (Glenwood Springs)

Iron Mountain Hot Springs opened in 2015 on the west side of town as an alternative to the busy Glenwood Hot Springs pools downtown. Similar to The Springs Resort in Pagosa Springs, Iron Mountain Hot Springs offers a collection of small tubs along the Colorado River, each at a different posted temperature. You’ll need a reservation for a three-hour soak, with tickets starting at $40 per person. The resort has 17 pools and the onsite Sopris Cafe offers healthy snacks and smoothies, along with treats for the kiddos.

Insider’s tip: Iron Mountain Hot Springs is one of the only Colorado hot springs resorts that serves beer. It’s in the cafe adjacent to the pools.

How to get there: Take Interstate 70 to Exit 114 (Midland Avenue) in Glenwood Springs. Follow it to Devereux Road and turn left. Drive for two miles and the resort will be on your left after crossing the Colorado River.

Strawberry Park Hot Springs (Steamboat Springs)

Strawberry Park Hot Springs toes the line between wild natural experience and well-maintained Colorado hot springs resort. You’ll need to either book a stay in the onsite lodging options (including mountain cabins, a train caboose, a shepherd’s wagon, or a campsite) or reserve a day spot in advance and pay $20 (cash only) at the door to visit between 10 AM and 10 PM.

The wild part comes in after the sun goes down as that’s when the clothes come off. Strawberry Park Hot Springs is clothing-optional after sunset. Be advised that it gets quite dark, and guests don’t take kindly to people flashing their cell phone lights on them when they’re in birthday-suit mode.

How to get there: From downtown Steamboat Springs, head north on 7th Street. Merge onto Missouri Avenue, then North Park Road, then Strawberry Park Road. Take a left where Strawberry Park Road merges with County Road 36. Follow County Road 36 to the resort. Note: this road is steep and in winter, is often icy and/or covered in snow. You will need a 4WD vehicle with high clearance capable of off-road driving.

Where is Tenerife?

Although part of Spain, the Canary Islands are closer to North Africa. Tenerife, the largest of the seven, is located to the east of La Palma, El Hierro, and La Gomera and to the west of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. The island is served by two airports: one in the north and the other in the south. Ferries connect Cádiz and Huelva in Spain while further services link the archipelago.

Where to stay in Tenerife

North and South Tenerife could almost be two different islands. Coated in emerald forest, the mountainous north maintains a cooler, more humid climate. The regions south of Mount Teide are hotter and receive increased sunshine.

Southern Tenerife is the most popular part of the island with first-time visitors favoring Costa de Adeje for its supply of accommodation, activities, and amenities. Los Cristianos has a similar vibe although it’s a tad calmer and suits families with younger children. Wedged between the two, Playa de las Américas is the party capital of Tenerife. It’s easy enough to hop in a cab for a night on the town before returning home for some shut-eye.

The northern coast is particularly picturesque with plunging ravines and historic villages. Popular with couples and families with older children, this is the best part of Tenerife to stay away from the crowds and you can fill your days poking around cobblestone plazas, hiking to viewpoints, and surfing. A car is required and you’ll need to be confident driving on winding roads.

The port city of Santa Cruz and its neighboring San Cristóbal de La Laguna are where to stay in Tenerife for historical and cultural pursuits. La Laguna was the original capital and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The new capital is teeming with museums, gardens, and a lively harborside. Both cities are ideal bases for exploring the mysterious Anaga Rural Park. Smaller settlements and coastal villages near Santa Cruz and La Laguna promise a quieter vacation but again a rental car will be needed.

What is there to do in Tenerife?

Tenerife’s southerly resorts are consumed with beaches, watersports, aqua parks, zoos, and golf courses. There are scores of activities for travelers of all ages while the Playa de las Américas attracts young partygoers. A hiking trail guides you over the volcanic cliffs of Los Gigantes (the Giants) on the northwest coast but you can’t beat the views from the ocean. Catamaran cruises and kayaking tours operate from the town. North Tenerife has superior surf breaks but El Médano is a southern alternative.

Teide National Park is the chief natural attraction where you will find hiking trails, roadside vistas, cable car rides, and wineries. It’s also possible to visit Spain’s tallest mountain at night for extraordinary stargazing. Further north, Anaga Rural Park is a protected biosphere reserve where highland valleys and laurel forests are interrupted by hilltop hamlets and swimming coves. In order to see the Enchanted Forest, you’ll need to secure a free permit ahead of visiting.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is where you’ll find such attractions as the Museum of Nature and Archaeology and the Palmetum Botanical Garden. Spend a day exploring the preserved streets of San Cristóbal de La Laguna where Mudéjar facades rub shoulders with neoclassical and rationalist buildings.
