Anchorage’s Best Airbnbs: Where Your Only Neighbors Have Antlers and Fur

Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, serves as a gateway to the The Last Frontier’s vast landscapes. Located on the traditional land of the Dena’ina Athabascan people and the Native Village of Eklutna, the city is a blend of the natural Alaskan landscape and modern urban conveniences. Anchorage showcases the best of Alaska — art and culture, breathtaking scenery, wildlife viewing, parks and trails, and an outstanding food scene. It also serves as an excellent base for exploring further afield. From the city, you can take multiple day trips to nearby must-see places such as Chugach State Park, the Matanuska Glacier, and the resort town of Girdwood. Due to the wealth of things to do in and around Anchorage, it’s worth spending at least three, if not more, days here. When it comes to planning accommodation, consider booking a self-catering option such as an Airbnb. This will give you a home base where you can kick off your muddy boots after a day exploring, prepare a home-cooked meal, and have a more local experience of Alaska. The Airbnb Anchorage rentals listed here range from cabins in the nearby forests, chic downtown apartments suitable for couples, to large townhouses for groups or families. All have Superhost status, five-star reviews from past guests, and promise an unforgettable vacation to the state.
When to visit Anchorage
Photo: TripWalkers/Shutterstock
Depending on what you’d like to do and see, the best time to visit Alaska is between June and August. The weather is most pleasant during these months, with temperatures in the 60s to low 70s and long daylight hours, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and viewing wildlife. May is also favorable. It’s a shoulder season month, meaning it’s less crowded than the peak summer months, but the weather is still comfortable.
For those interested in winter sports like snowmobiling, cross-country, and downhill skiing, ice hockey, visiting between January and April would be ideal. October is when the aurora season heats up. Clear nights draw photographers and admirers to the many scenic viewpoints around the city.

As you might have guessed, the club is located inside a cenote, a natural sinkhole filled with groundwater, which is a distinctive feature of the Yucatan Peninsula landscape. The cenote setting provides a breathtaking backdrop for the club’s activities and events, making it a one-of-a-kind destination that captures the essence of the region.
Buuts’ Ha’ Cenote Club is an adults-only venue, open every day, offering a range of experiences, including live music from national DJs who play in the mystic cenote, adding to the club’s atmosphere. The club regularly hosts different shows every weekend, too, providing a variety of entertainment options for its guests. In addition to the club’s music and entertainment offerings, it’s also known for its cuisine, like tuna tataki, grilled octopus, and confit pork belly.
What is a cenote, anyway?A cenote is a natural sinkhole or pit that forms when limestone bedrock collapses and exposes groundwater underneath. This term originated in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico and is derived from the Mayan word “dzonot,” which means “well.” Cenotes are often found in caverns and caves, filled with fresh water that has been filtered by the earth, making it clear and pure. These beautiful formations play a vital role in the ecosystem and were also considered sacred by the ancient Mayans, serving as water sources and sites for rituals and sacrifices.

Common Spaces at the Conrad Los Angeles Pay Homage to LA artistsThe indoor/outdoor lobby is located on level 10, making for a truly “elevated” check-in experience. This common space features floor-to-ceiling windows with impressive views of the concert hall across the street, and an expansive outdoor terrace outfitted with greenery and seasonal decor.
Seemingly no little design detail has been spared — including the arrival bar, which itself offers a piece of history, made out of polished, glazed 11,000-year-old molten lava and Ceppo di Gre stone from the quarries of Lake Iseo in Lombardy. Even the linens and seating arrangements seem to add a vibrant, classic pop of subtle colors with sunny, clear California-esque shades of blue and yellows.
The modern art installations seen throughout the reception area, event lawn, and lobby spaces are inspired to speak to the theme of “California culture,” showcasing prominent local artists and offering guests an intimate look into Los Angeles’ art industry as part of the brand’s “Conrad Art Encounters” program. Here, Malibu-based artist Jon Krawczyk crafted the silver sculpture on the event lawn.
Eating on-site at the Conrad Los Angeles

The hotel hosts two signature dining concepts by acclaimed chef José Andrés and his team. San Laurel, which is just off the lobby, is the property’s signature dining experience. Here, guests can dive into “flavors of Spain as seen through a California lens,” meaning a blend of the bountiful and fresh agricultural elements found in the Golden State (straight from the Santa Monica Farmers Market), infused with Spanish inspiration. This restaurant serves breakfast and dinner — with classic menu highlights including Sanchoku Wagyu Coulotte, Gambas al Ajillo, and my favorite dish when I dined on-site — the Beefsteak Tomato Tartare. I also really enjoyed my drink, the “Foggy Hill,” which wasn’t just a drink, but an experience. The server came out and poured the orange-thyme aromatic cloud into my cocktail which was made with Del Maguey Vida mezcal, Yzaguirre 1884 Gran Reserva vermouth, Cynar, and Aperol — adding an especially smoky flavor to the cocktail in a more than creative way.
At the rooftop restaurant Agua Viva, which showcases the stunning views of the city, diners will feel laid-back beach club vibes while tasting a blend of Latin and Asian flavors and fresh cocktails. Menu classics include choices like the grilled octopus and chilled Maine lobster roll, which can be enjoyed in the open-air dining space featuring sweeping sights of DTLA.
At The Beaudry Room Bar on the hotel’s main level, which is designed to feel like a classic west-coast cocktail destination, enjoy a craft drink in a buzzy atmosphere. Finally, at Airlight, located alongside the property’s roof deck pool, enjoy a tasty menu of lighter bites and cocktails with views of the skyline, poolside. Spending time out on the private pool deck, which also has panoramic views of Downtown Los Angeles, feels like floating in the sky.

Relax and rejuvenate at the Conrad Spa Los AngelesRelaxing at the Conrad Spa Los Angeles felt like an elite version of coziness with its modern technology and holistic approach to wellness through both the body and mind. Before and after my massage treatment, I spent time in the relaxing, dim waiting room behind a special curtain that enclosed me into my own sort of “cocoon” underneath a weighted blanket, listening to a soothing soundtrack of nature sounds.
For those who want to spend time at this immaculate spa without having to book a treatment, the property offers a “Spa Club” wellness membership offering access to the immersive wellness technology as well as the on-site sauna, pool, and fitness center. It even includes a monthly treatment of either a Face Couture Facial or an Intuitive Massage. I was impressed with the clean and bright fitness center, which had upscale cardio and weight equipment, regularly restocked fresh fruit, weekly guided group workout classes on weekends, and never felt overly crowded no matter how many workout warriors were sharing the space with me.
One element of the spa I didn’t get to try this time around, but which fascinated me nonetheless, was the “Recovery Cabins.” This collection of pod-like spaces looked just large enough for users to lie down and become immersed in a blend of neuroscience technology said to diffuse stress and anxiety naturally.
Guest rooms at the Conrad Los Angeles
Guest rooms at the Conrad Los Angeles feel like a mix of classic contemporary designs, with pristinely clean, wide-plank light oak floors and natural linen walls. The floor-to-ceiling windows added plenty of natural brightness and showcased the sweeping views of the LA skyline (but are also equipped with blackout blinds for proper rest). A minimum of two furry family members under 25 pounds are welcome per room, with the payment of a $100.00 non-refundable fee (and service animals are always allowed).
I stayed in a Studio One King Bed guest room, which had 463 square feet of space on the 16th floor, with a view looking out over the pool and the courtyard area below. I loved sitting on a couch situated in front of one of the large windows, which was next to the cabinet holding the mini-bar goods and coffee supplies. The bathroom itself was an interesting design — featuring a separate shower area with three different settings, either opening up fully to let in more natural light with a sliding door or closing to allow for more privacy.
Other in-room amenities include a custom mini-bar, a high-tech lighting system, comfortable beds, and a Nespresso maker.
Other standout elements of the Conrad Los Angeles
One element of the property that especially stuck out to me was the effectiveness of the high-speed Wi-Fi offered everywhere on–site. I enjoyed waking up early grabbing a cup of coffee in the lobby, and sitting outside in the sunshine on the shared terrace space getting work done.
Also, the property does a seamless job of blending work with leisure — I didn’t notice how many visitors were there for work trips until I was told that I was sitting at a table that had been pre-reserved by a group of colleagues who wanted to collaborate on a project.
I felt like it was a great place for visitors to stay while exploring the vibrant arts and culture scene of downtown LA — and it’s also an upscale spot for business travelers in town for a meeting or convention.
A Man Made Shrimp in an Airplane Bathroom. Genius, or Disgusting?

There are two universal truths that can always be counted on. Number one, that airplane food will be, largely, unsatisfying. Number two, that passengers will go to all kinds of lengths to avoid airplane food and satiate their hunger in other ways. That may mean bringing snacks with them from home, buying airport food to bring on the plane, or indulging in the airport lounge buffet pre-flight. What you probably haven’t tried, however, is actually cooking your own food on the plane. Think it’s impossible? Unfortunately not, as this guy on TikTok just demonstrated.
TiktTok user barfly777 documented the step-by-step process of cooking garlic shrimp in an airplane bathroom, and it’s equal parts impressive and disgusting. He simply brought onboard a bag of roasted garlic and a bag of raw extra large shrimp, along with two 6-volt batteries wired to an immersion beverage heater. He filled the bathroom sink with water, tossed in the shrimp and garlic, some mashed potatoes, and then used the beverage heater to heat up the water until it was hot enough to cook the shrimp.
@barfly7777 With 2 6v batteries wired in series to an immersion beverage heater, one is able to get water scalding hot quickly. Raw shrimp will only need a few minutes. Adding instant mash to the shrimp water adds some extra flavor. Garlic butter makes everything go better. #terribleideawhattime #shrimp #garlicshrimp #mashedpotatoes #flying #bathroomchef #howtocookproperly #barfly7777 #innovation #privatechef #newidea #hack #Splice ♬ FUCK IT – xryce
You’re probably feeling one of two things right now. Maybe you respect the creativity and innovation, and even scheming immersion beverage heater recipes for your next flight. Maybe you’re gagging at the thought of cooking anything in airplane sink water, or at the idea of behind the next person in the bathroom after this guy, and smelling the garlic. Whichever camp you happen to fall into, you’ve gotta admit that the next time you’re hungry on a plane, or turning up your nose at airplane food, part of you will always wonder, “what could I do right now with a beverage heater, two 6-volt batteries, and some meat…?”

With Views of Edinburgh Castle, These Are the Best Central Airbnbs in Edinburgh

No first trip to Edinburgh would be complete without a visit to Edinburgh Castle. The world-famous icon of Scotland is part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site and is the most popular paid tourist attraction in the country. Dominating the skyline of the city, the fortress looms over the streets below from its position on the Castle Rock. Due to its strategic location, it has been a royal residence, a military stronghold, and a focus of countless sieges and battles. It also offers stunning panoramic views over the city of Edinburgh. Due to the size and walkability of the city center, the best way to explore Scotland’s capital is on foot. That means, if you are looking for a central Airbnb, you’ll be no more than a 30-minute walk from the Royal Mile — the main street leading to the castle gates. The Airbnb near Edinburgh Castle rentals we’ve selected here are steeped in history, have views of the iconic site, Superhost status, and five-star reviews from past guests.

The best time to visit Edinburgh Castle
Photo: godrick/Shutterstock
Edinburgh is a year-round destination. However, it’s suggested to opt for the shoulder seasons of September to October and April to May. Due to the popularity of the Edinburgh Festival the summer, particularly August, is horribly busy. Accommodation is also hugely more expensive during this time. If you do want to take advantage of the world-famous festival, make sure to book far in advance. Winter is also a magical time, it does get dark early, but the festive lights and Christmas markets are simply beautiful.

This Airbnb apartment is spread over two floors with a study area overlooking the reception space via a glass balcony. It’s seconds from the city’s most popular green space, The Meadows, and a ten-minute walk from Edinburgh Castle and the city center. The blend of modern amenities with the historical significance of the buildings perfectly suits the Scottish capital — a place where old meets new.

The center of Edinburgh is divided into Old Town and New Town. The Old Town is where Edinburgh began. It’s characterized by a medieval street plan and Reformation-era buildings. Here, you’ll find the famous Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. New Town, on the other hand, is where the city expanded in the 1700s. It’s recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its impressive urban planning and architecture. The streets in the area are peppered with charming gardens, boutiques, cafes, and some of the better restaurants and bars in the city.
This two-bedroom garden apartment is situated on Northumberland Street (considered one of the top addresses in town.) From here, you’re minutes away from Stockbridge and Broughton Street. To reach the castle, you’ll have around a 30-minute walk. The route takes you through New Town onto Princess Street and up The Mound, past must-see sights and interesting parts of the city. The apartment is bright, spacious, and contemporary, with two bedrooms, an open-planned kitchen and living area, and a beautiful garden.

Edinburgh Castle hosts a busy roster of events throughout the year. One of the key events is the Castle Of Light, which runs from November to January. Light installations bring the castle to life. This can be enjoyed inside the fortress’ walls or from the streets below. Edinburgh Castle is also renowned for its New Year’s Eve (Hogmanay) celebrations, which traditionally include a spectacular fireworks display. If you’re visiting during winter, this Airbnb is in prime position for a viewing party. Keep in mind that Airbnbs book up very far in advance for Christmas and Hogmanay, so plan accordingly.

Another larger option, with impressive 360 views of the city and castle, is this four-bedroom apartment. It’s located in a National Trust property that was once home to Sir Patrick Geddes, a Scot famed for his innovative thinking in the fields of urban planning and sociology. The apartment has retained many original features and is situated right next door to Edinburgh Castle at the top of the Royal Mile. It’s worth noting that this property, like many protected historic buildings in the city, is unfortunately not suitable for those with mobility issues.

It will be hard to find a more unusual Edinburgh Airbnb than this luxurious property with its stone spiral staircase and original 1880s features. It was renovated in 2015, and although there are nods to the past everywhere you look, it now features a modern open-planned living, kitchen, and dining layout and three plush en-suite bedrooms. This Luxurious Resort in Fiji Is One of the Most Expensive in the World, With Rooms Starting at $5,000

Fiji is synonymous with island luxury. COMO Laucala Island, a private island resort in Fiji, is known for its high-end luxury and natural beauty. Set over nearly 3,500 acres, it’s one of the world’s largest private islands. The resort features just 25 villas, ensuring privacy and tranquility for its guests, and each villa is designed in an open-plan style, blending traditional Fijian design with modern luxury. They each come with private pools, gardens, and many even have direct beach access.

The island also has five restaurants and bars, a fitness center, a spa, and a variety of water sports facilities. The restaurants exemplify not only Fijian cuisine — like sweet potatoes, taro, and coconut — but international foods as well. There’s a strong emphasis on sustainability, too, with much of the food served at the restaurants coming from the island’s own organic farms.
The resort offers an array of activities to keep guests entertained and engaged throughout their stay. From snorkeling and scuba diving to horseback riding, surfing, golfing on the island’s 18-hole course, or simply relaxing on the island’s white sand beaches, there’s something to suit every interest. For those looking for relaxation, the resort’s award-winning spa offers a range of wellness treatments and therapies in a serene setting.
As the saying goes — you get what you pay for. When it comes to pricing, COMO is undoubtedly a pricy destination, with prices for accommodations starting at $5,000 per night, though that may vary depending on season and type of villa. Sure, it’s probably one of the more expensive hotels you’ve come across — and indeed, one of the most expensive in the world — but just take one look at those private villas. If you’ve got the spare change, it’s totally worth it.
