Man Uses a Flimsy Piece of Paper to Cut Through Wood

Featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!

MINI BELIEVE IT OR NOT –

Curious to see just how bad a paper cut can be, a carpenter replaced his buzz saw blade with a piece of paper and cut through wood.

John Heisz was curious about whether a flimsy piece of paper could actually cut anything
He created a paper saw by replacing his buzz saw blade with a piece of circular cut paper
The paper saw cut through paper, cardboard, and even a small piece of wood
The flimsy paper could not cut all the way through a thicker block of wood or an aluminum can

MINI BION
“BIONs” – short for Believe It or Not – is the word we use at Ripley’s to refer to anything that is unbelievable and worthy to become part of Ripley’s lore and collection.

This Tigger Might Have More in Common with Roo

Like the character in the A.A. Milne series, the most wonderful thing about Tigger is that he’s the only one. That might not be, strictly speaking, true, but he is certainly unique.

Tigger was born with a condition known as ectrodactyly. This congenital deformity has made him more of a Roo than a Tigger. He spends a lot of time on his back legs than on all fours.

But this hasn’t limited Tigger at all. He’s still a ball of energy who loves to run and play with other dogs and animals.

Tigger is a delightfully outgoing, mostly normal dog. What makes Tigger not normal is just how much harder he has to work to accomplish all the things he loves to do.

Ectrodactyly

Also known as split hand or cleft hand malformation, ectrodactyly is a disorder that is known to affect many different animals.

In Tigger’s case, the bones of his front legs developed wrong. They’re the equivalent of the bones in a human’s forearm, and they started growing in a manner that had them bowing and rotating outward. His wrists didn’t form properly, and his toes didn’t fully develop. The few toes he does have resemble claws and not padded feet.

This all means that Tigger can get around on all fours, but it’s very hard and painful for him. But like any two-year-old, he doesn’t let his condition get him down.

Efforts to Help

Tigger is currently in foster care. He was brought to the attention of the Savin’ Juice Medical Dog Rescue when his previous owner couldn’t afford to take care of him any longer.

Now, the rescue and his foster family is looking to raise money for a surgery that will help him get around with a little more ease. The way he’s been getting around has been doing more damage to his joints. In an effort to stop this before the damage is permanent, Tigger will need surgery and prosthetics.

You can learn more about Tigger on his Facebook page, and his family have put together a collection to help them afford his operation.

There’s a Mosquito Appreciation Festival in Russia

Featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!

Russian Mosquito Festival

MINI BELIEVE IT OR NOT –

Each summer, the Russian town of Berezniki hosts the Russian Mosquito Festival.

The festival was started four years ago as a joke
Prizes are given to the person with the most mosquito bites
In previous years, there were contests for who could catch the most mosquitos
Unusually hot and dry weather has limited the mosquito population, but didn’t cancel the festival

At Civil War Tails, the Civil War is Reenacted With Cats

Featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!

The Civil War

If you live in the South, Civil War reenactments are commonplace. You can’t go more than a few months without hearing about another one. In all fairness, the Civil War Tails museum doesn’t actually do reenactments. What they’ve produced are dioramas of key moments from the war, and depictions of life during that time. But the dioramas all feature cats instead of people!

However, Civil War reenactments with kittens do sound like an adorable idea, and someone should get on that. Can you imagine them all silly in their outfits gamboling towards one another to play and wrestle? Too cute!

Civil War Tails

Located in Gettysburg, the museum offers a unique and fun take on history. But that’s not to say that the founders of the museum, Rebecca and Ruth Brown, don’t take their subject matter seriously. They create their scenes while thinking about soldiers, their families and loved ones, while they craft it.

If anything, the museum strives to give people a view into an important history while not getting too bogged down in the horror and tragedy of that history.

In some of the diorama scenes, the fact that the people are actually cats is obvious. But in others, the cats are not the first thing you notice.

This is because the fact that the soldiers are cats is, in a lot of ways, secondary. The point of the dioramas is still to teach people about life during the Civil War, and in the midst of some of the more gruesome scenes, that intention comes through loud and clear.

All in all, Civil War Tails Museum presents a unique and interesting look at the Civil War. Sometimes whimsical, sometimes heartbreaking, but always featuring cats.
