What the Cluck? Yes, that’s a Brahma Chicken

Featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!

Brahma Chicken

Have you seen a Brahma Chicken?

We’re guessing you’ve never really thought about the best chicken breed to raise in your backyard, right? From laying eggs to tender meat, the Brahma chicken was once the American choice.

These chickens can grow anywhere from nine to eighteen pounds!  That’s why people are losing their feathers after seeing a video of a gigantic Brahma nonchalantly walking around a farm. It’s been said that chickens are the closest living relative to a dinosaur, and this Brahma is a T-rex!

Am I the only person wondering why this chicken is so damn big

Turkish Court to Decide: Is Gollum Evil?

Featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!

Gollum-Turkish-President

Is Gollum Evil?

Experts have been asked by a Turkish court to determine whether Gollum, from The Lord of the Rings, is evil.

This knowledge is crucial in deciding a libel case between Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan and defendant Bilgin Ciftci.

Ciftci posted pictures online comparing the president to the creature from Middle Earth, and prosecutors want reparations for the purportedly offensive comparisons.

is gollum evil

The post in question

Turkish Law

Insulting the president of Turkey is punishable by up to 4 years in prison.

Erdogan’s administration is notorious for pursuing critics. They have sued cartoonists, Miss Turkey, and even teenagers for social media posts.

They have the record for most Twitter post takedowns and even banned YouTube for two years because the company refused to stop hosting videos that disparaged the president.

The Defense

The defendant’s lawyers argue that Gollum isn’t evil, and the prosecutors have not seen the movie.

“Gollum can’t be defined as evil. The character itself is a war between good and bad.” – Ciftci’s lawyer

The judge, who is not very familiar with the films, is unsure if the character is evil.

Experts have been called in, including a cinema specialist, a behavior scientist, and a psychologist. Their task will be to arbitrate whether Gollum is a true antagonist.

Peter Jackson’s Opinion

Director of The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies Peter Jackson weighed in on the issue along with screenwriters and determined none of the images compared to Erdogan were even Gollum.

“All of them are images of the character called Smeagol.” –Peter Jackson

He goes on to say that isn’t malicious at all.

For the uninitiated, Smeagol is the Hobbit, who is eventually corrupted by the ring. The corrupted Smeagol becomes Gollum.

The case is ongoing, but we will post an update once a decision has been made. In the meantime, tweet or comment your thoughts. Is Gollum evil, or is he a misunderstood and tragic character?

#twitterpolls! Is #LOTR character Gollum evil? A Turkish court is deciding that issue right now. Blog in the reply.

Shipwrecked Fox II Found!

Featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!

Fox II shipwreck

Last year, Stein Hoff of Norway spent 84 days at sea, rowing from New York to the Isle of Scilly off the coast of England. Stein had to be rescued from a storm at sea by a passing ship, but the cargo freighter had no way of towing his rowboat home. The Fox II had to be abandoned. Now, nine months later, the lost boat has been spotted in the desolate icy shores of Spildra, Norway, an island near the 80-degree latitude mark.

14-year-old Trygve Tidemann Bjørklund and his father spotted the boat frozen to the shoreline of the island of Spildra. Having been out fishing for the day, they were certainly intrigued by the small shipwreck on the remote island. They went ashore to investigate the curious craft, finding it to be none other than Stein Hoff’s lost boat.

They reported damage to the side rail and main cabin, but a compartment on the front was still sealed. All of the compartments they managed to open were filled with ice, and they don’t expect it to thaw until June.

Stein continues to work on his book about the journey while he waits to recover the boat he spent 84 days rowing in stormy seas in. Due to the remote location of the island, no roads exist to reach the boat.

Ripley’s, along with Stein, think their best shot is the Hurtigruten, which takes cars and tourists to and from Norway’s northern- most islands.

Cosmic Jellyfish Illuminates the Deep-Sea

Cosmic Jellyfish Illuminates the Deep-Sea

Cosmic Jellyfish

This mesmerizing Cosmic Jellyfish was found during the exploration of the Utu Seamount in the National Marine Sanctuary, 2.3 miles beneath the surface by members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

While the jellyfish was first identified as a Rhopalonematid trachymedusa, it might be a whole new species.  Why may you ask? Well, this Cosmic Jellyfish has two rows of tentacles where one row is facing up and the other down. Jellyfish tentacles usually hang down from its bell.

Now that’s what we call a flying saucer.

Did you know?

Jellyfish have no hearts, brains or eyes.
Jellyfish can eat ten times their body weight in one day.
The Cosmic Jellyfish reproductive organs are yellow and its digestive system red.

It should come as no surprise that we’ve thought jellyfish looked like something out of a sci-fi movie. In 2014, we stumbled upon a galaxy named Jellyfish Space.

Take a look at this majestic jellyfish. And try not to stare at it for too long; that hypnotic sway will transport you.
