Flute virtuoso Claire Chase brings her acclaimed Density 2036 project to Toronto - “a rare combination of grace and guts” The New Yorker

Tickets & Subscriptions

Toronto – On October 4, Soundstreams presents the first concert of the 2016/17 Ear Candy series dedicated to big ideas in small venues: Density 2036 at Buddies in Bad Times Cabaret.  Claire Chase, dubbed “the young star of the modern flute” by The New Yorker, and praised by The New York Times for her “extravagant technique, broad stylistic range and penetrating musicality”, returns to Soundstreams with this ambitious and highly-acclaimed endeavor following the sold-out success of The Whisper Opera in 2015.  The October 4 concert offers a rare opportunity for audiences to experience the intensity, power and virtuosity of a Claire Chase performance in a very intimate setting.
Claire ChaseDensity 2036 is a 22-year project which Chase began in 2014 to commission new works in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of Edgard Varèse’s groundbreaking 1936 flute solo, Density 21.5.  Each season between 2014-2036, Claire will premiere a new 60-minute program of solo flute work commissioned that year in a special performance at The Kitchen in New York City, and on tour in select cities thereafter.  The October 4 performance at Buddies in Bad Times Cabaret marks the Density 2036 project’s first Toronto visit and features works by Du Yun, Steve Reich, Marcos Balter, Mario Diaz de León, plus Edgard Varèse’s Density 21.5.

Each cycle of works (Density 2014, Density 2015, Density 2020, etc) will have its world premiere recordings released annually, and scores, performance notes, and materials will be made available digitally as educational resources for flutists everywhere.  Every three years of the cycle (Density 2016, Density 2019, etc) a retrospective event will be held in which Claire will perform cumulative concerts of all Density work commissioned up until that date.  In 2036, a 24-hour marathon will take place.

Claire Chase is considered a model for a new generation of American classical musicians – her career embodies entrepreneurship, technical virtuosity, and performance charisma.  Heralded globally for her passion for and support of new and experimental music, Chase is the founder and co-artistic director of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE).  Since its inception, ICE has premiered more than 650 works, making new music and audience engagement some of its hallmarks.  In 2012, Claire Chase was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship for her work with ICE.  Other recipients of the “Genius Grant” include pianist Jeremy Denk, pianist Stephen Hough, and composer John Zorn.

Claire Chase will also perform as part of Soundstreams’ 2016/17 Main Stage concert season on October 12 in a “surround-sound” concert entitled Magic Flutes at Koerner Hall.

Ear Candy is supported by NOW Magazine and Sovereign State.

So - I'll be back to posting this weekend.

Lead Single From Baz Luhrmann & Nas' The Get Down

On the heels of  their critically acclaimed single featuring Ty Dolla $ign, French Montana and Lil Yachty, “In My Foreign”, Los Angeles-based music collective The Americanos (Louie Rubio, Alexander Shultz and James Corrine) are very excited to share their new single for one of streaming television’s most hotly anticipated shows to date - The Get Down. Co-produced by Baz Luhrmann and Nas,The Americanos' new production "Set Me Free" (ft. Nile Rodgers) with Herizen Guardiola as Mylene Cruz on the show, is featured in the series trailer, and lands digitally today. Highlighted by Herizen Guardiola’s rich vocal stylings and and Nile Rodgers on guitar, the track builds to a genre-bending soundscape that illustrates a very personal sentiment. The group comments:

"When Baz Lurhman came to us to work on one of the most important hit songs in 'The Get Down' we were honored. He needed a huge dance anthem that could seamlessly combine Gospel, Afro-Latin, Disco, and Hip Hop, and so "Set Me Free" was created. Baz loved the track so much he ended up extending certain parts of the song so he could use it as much as possible in the show. We're a DJ group with a crazy vinyl collection but we're also multi-instrumentalists and big Baz fans so this was a perfect fit for us."

Baz Luhrmann, director of Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby, Romeo + Juliet and Strictly Ballroom, says of the project: "This is living history. The forefathers of it are actually living… There have been times when I haven't known if I could do this. I haven't had a break of any kind in two years. It is constant and relentless."
The Get Down on Netflix

In addition to The Americanos, The Get Down features original music and onscreen appearances by the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Jaden Smith, Christina Aguilera, Donna Summer, Nile Rodgers, Teddy Pendergrass, Leon Bridges, Janelle Monáe and up-and-coming young actors Herizen Guardiola, Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen. Madrid's Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum presents an enthralling retrospective on the French artist and his ability to depict intimacy in its various forms (social, among friends, family or sexual).
Woman with a Parasol in a Garden’, a painting in the Museum's permanent collection. © Museo Thyssen-BornemiszaMore than 70 works from museums and collections all over the world draw us into the world of textures and suggestions Renoir used to express intimacy in his paintings. In his impressionist paintings, Renoir strongly evokes tactile sensations in volumes, materials and textures. We find this at every stage of his development and in a wide variety of genres: group scenes, portraits, still life, landscapes, and nudes.

The filmmaker Jean Renoir described how his father “looked at flowers, women and clouds in the sky as other men touch and caress”. In contrast to the habitual conception of Impressionism, which reduces it to “the purely visual”, the exhibition to be shown at the Museum in the autumn of 2016 singles out the central role of tactile sensations in Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s canvases, which are evident in all the different phases of his career and which he expressed in a wide range of genres, including group scenes, portraits and nudes, as well as still lifes and landscapes.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir. A nymph by a Stream, 1869-1870. The National Gallery, London. This survey comprising more than 70 works by the artist, loaned from museums and collections world-wide, will reveal the way Renoir made use of the tactile qualities of volume, material and textures as a vehicle to depict intimacy in its different forms – social intimacy, among friends and family, or erotic – and how that imagery connects the work and the viewer to the sensuality of the brushstroke and the pictorial surface.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir, The Source, 1906. Zurich, Colección Foundation E.G. Bührle.Commissioned by the Museum’s Artistic Director Guillermo Solana, the exhibition will subsequently be shown at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao from 7 February to 15 May 2017.

Spaceborne by Astronaut & photographer Donald R. Pettit
(PSG Books - November 2016)

Find out more & Buy/Pre-order the book

It's maybe one of the most universal dreams shared by nearly all human beings - to view earth from space.
Aurora borealisI’d like to introduce you to the next book PSG is releasing, Spaceborne, by active NASA astronaut and photographer Donald R. Pettit with a foreword by Alan Bean, member of Apollo 12 and the 4th man to walk on the moon.
Star trailsPettit has lived in space - worked and walked in space. During his 370 days aboard the International Space Station, Pettit created a unique portfolio of fascinating photographs of the earth, the stars, and everything in between.
Betiskoba River, MadagascarThe spirit of exploration runs deep in so many of us. To see what's "over there" or "around the next corner"...to discover exotic new lands and, even new worlds, has lead people to do extraordinary things. For astronaut Donald R. Pettit it has propelled him to spend 370 days aboard the International Space Station.
Aurora on earth from ISSBeing afforded that rare privilege of viewing earth from space was not lost on Mr. Pettit. Feeling a strong sense of duty to share what he witnessed, he was inspired to use his talents as a photographer to create an amazing array of worldly and other-worldly images of earth, the stars, the auroras and everything in between. Many of the best of those photographs are included in this museum quality, hardcover, coffee table book.
Florida from aboveThe foreword is by Alan Bean. Mr. Bean is widely known for his artwork depicting various space-related scenes and documenting his own experiences in space as well as those of his fellow Apollo program astronauts. In November, 1969, aboard Apollo 12, Bean became the fourth person to walk on the Moon. He made his final flight into space on the Skylab 3 mission in 1973. After retiring from NASA in 1981, he pursued his passion for painting full time.
Ganges delta from ahove“Art is woven into the fabric of space, and we will only fully sense its forms by venturing there. Astronauts are privileged to be the explorers of this age, and I believe we should share our experiences with everyone on earth.” - Donald R. Pettit.
Star trails and the ISSExcerpt: The history of spaceborne photography has been colored, too, by tragedy. On February 1, 2003, I was on the International Space Station as a member of the Expedition 6 crew. That was the day the Space Shuttle Columbia, STS-107 burned up during its return to Earth. All seven astronauts aboard perished. U.S. space shuttles remained grounded for more than two years while the accident was investigated and NASA engineers fixed the problem. The Expedition 6 mission was extended to nearly six months, and we returned to Earth on our Russian Soyuz spacecraft. The Soyuz also suffered a minor malfunction during entry, causing us to ballistically return. Basically we became a person-packed meteorite, and missed our intended landing site by 300 miles.

In Conversation With…:

In Conversation With… Genevieve Nnaji and Kunle Afolayan
This onstage conversation will explore Genevieve Nnaji and Kunle Afolayan’s inspiring stories, illuminating the complex dynamics behind Nollywood’s rise to prominence at home and all over the world.

Following in the footsteps of his father, the beloved actor-producer-director Ade Love, Afolayan garnered accolades out of the gate with his directorial debut, The Figurine (2009), and continues to innovate as a cinematic storyteller and industry heavyweight. Afolayan has elevated the standards and ambitions of Nigerian cinema over the past decade; from shooting on 35mm instead of digital cameras, to devising elaborate release strategies for his films, including his most recent venture, The CEO (2016), which took place on an Air France flight from Lagos to Paris.

DUFFTOWN (SCOTLAND) - Since its inception in 2002 our programme has seen The Glenfiddich Distillery play host to one hundred and twenty artists from around the globe. Each artist spends three months in residence to be inspired by the unique environment Glenfiddich offers.
This summer, once again, Glenfiddich has invited eight visual artists to live and work together in the heart of Speyside. Each one creates works of art in reaction to their new surroundings and as a reflection of their experiences. This opening, the second of our 2016 summer exhibition schedule, will provide an opportunity for four of this year’s residents to display the art they have been working on over the past few weeks.

Eleanor KingEleanor King is the twelfth Canadian artist to participate in our programme and has spent her summer at Glenfiddich attempting to live using only technologies and materials that would have been available in the year 1900. She describes her summer project, known as the FUTURE PAST, as being a complex and ridiculous performance concerned with modernisation, technology and time. Yet it is not a romantic retreat into the past but rather an earnest attempt to re-learn traditions and imagine sustainable and utopian futures.

Imagination and reality are brought together in the skilfully executed drawings of Korean artist Min Joon Park whose thoughtful observations of life at Glenfiddich have been captured in a number of delicate pencil and ink works and bound together in to a series of dream like illustrations heavily influenced by his appreciation of great artists such as Di Vinci.

For Emily Binks, the second resident artist to be selected through Glenfiddich’s collaboration with the New Contemporaries Exhibition the past weeks have been spent collecting unwanted sofas to be brought together into a sculptural installation inspired by mountain bothies and rudimentary shelters.

Min Joon ParkAlso in a final flourish before she heads back to Australia Joan Ross has brought together an eclectic range of materials from expanded foam and polystyrene to fur from red deer and kangaroo to create a collection of frivolity that also critiques capitalism and consumerism, drawing on the kitsch side of Scottish tourism.

Finally Ross and Binks have also come together to create a collaborative work celebrating their combined love of Hi Vis Fluoro colours, with an external installation that is inspired by the scarecrows they have observed protecting the highlands.

A private view will be held on the evening of Friday 26th August. The exhibition is then open to the public from Saturday 27th August until Sunday 18th September.
The gallery is open each day apart from Mondays and Tuesdays from 12.30 till 5.30 pm. -  Admission is free
