Jared Weiss - Isolated Thunderstorms

Listening to his polished tenor on this release, it's no surprise to find that Jared Weiss is a veteran of the Off-Broadway musical theatre scene both in his native Manhattan and in regional theatre, with a BMus in vocal performance from NYU.
The songs, all penned by Jared, feature clever lyrics, delivered in a smooth tenor that sounds effortless. Interesting harmonies and a variety of approaches showcase his talents with an underlying theme of personal reflection. From a media release,
"Isolated Thunderstorms is an auto-biographical confessional, born out of a life or death need to tell the truth. I threw away the love of my life because I was too sick to care. My mind was warped. I hit rock bottom. What choices did I make to get me to this place of isolation? I order to re-examine the tragic, macabre moments of my life, I first had to embrace them. I don't know if I understand them, but Isolated Thunderstorms is my response to my examination."
It sounds dark and desolate, but while the words may be revealing, the music covers a variety of genres. Isolated Thunderstorms, is a driving modern alt-rocker about creating your own piece of heaven. Annalu (from Monterrey) falls into classic acoustic guitar singer songwriter territory, with the easy facility that speaks of his background in musical theatre. The piano driven Get out of My Head sounds like it could have come from Broadway's latest must-see.
The production is polished, and Jared plays both electric and acoustic guitar, piano, and harmonica. He set out to make a folk album and ended up with something more rollicking - let's call it pop rock with an attention to vocals and lyrics that come from folk.
Can't Remember Your Name has an acoustic riff that's like the opening of Led Zeppelin's Ramble On, with added layers of percussion, piano, and a churchy organ - perhaps the folkiest of the tracks on the release, but still with an edge that takes it into rock territory. It's a standout track.
I'll be waiting in the park till the leaves turn grey, hoping you come back again
I'll be waiting in the park till the grey turns ashen, and my heart has found a friend
I'll be waiting in the park till the sky bleeds red, and blows the winter wind
I'll be waiting int he park till my mind grows dark, and I can't remember your name
Isolated Thunderstorms II sounds like it could be in a musical theatre production, bright and bouncy. Darling, Reni is a nod to Americana with a minimalist arrangement of acoustic guitar strumming and vocals, and a story about losing the girl. Elusive Particle is an interesting track that's more difficult to classify, with some passages of prog rock and a soft edge of singer/songwriter, the lyrics a poetic and abstract message of togetherness.
Track List:
1. Isolated Thunderstorms
2. Annalu (From Monterrey)
3. Get Out Of My Head
4. Not Everything That Dies Grows Old
5. Can't Remember Your Name
6. Isolated Thunderstorms II
7. Julia

Taylor James - Insane
(Heart of Gold Music, LLC December 2, 2017)
• Stream it on Spotify
• Buy it on iTunes
If you like RnB, soul, and gospel in classic style, with lush arrangements that showcase soulful vocals, Taylor James is your man. A native of West Central Mississippi, Taylor began his musical career at 15.
Insane is characterized by earworm melodies and polished vocal facility - Taylor can easily manage all the fluid acrobatics of the genre but in a way that still feels genuine and not simply vocal pyrotechnics. As a songwriter, his lyrics cover the usual romantic territory with a soft edge of true love and all its pleasures.
Say It's Me has a nice bouncey vibe, with classic boy group harmonies on the chorus. The music has a timeless quality - not what you'd call retro, while still in the musical tradition. Say It's Me is melodic, with nuanced vocals, and complex rhythms that elevate the typical drum machine sound.
Insane, the title track, is a jazzy pop tune with a relentlessly upbeat vibe. He's the only instrumentalist listed on the credits, and that covers keyboards and production credits. He's got a great ear for thick production values that suit the music while retaining clarity. The effect is multi-layered and shimmering.
Good News leans toward hip hop and a cool horn line and a choir for harmonies in the background. Taylor has a nicely complex sense of composition that adds an unexpected touch to each song.
Cassandra Wilkerson sings on Rock (Throw Back Mix), the one track with a distinctly retro vibe as the title suggests. Her vocals range from soft to hard edged, and it makes for a nice foil for the other tracks. Make It Right ventures into gospel territory with a slow ballad and rich harmonies.
He's got terrific vocal chops that he can use judiciously through several styles, with enough stylistic variety to keep it interesting through the whole release.
Track List
1. Back 2 U
2. Say Its Me
3. Insane
4. Good News
5. Let's Go Steppin
6. Rock (Through Back Mix)
7. Make It Right
8. This Time

From a media release:
Toronto Travel News:
Kimpton® Saint George Hotel opens
Enjoy an authentic taste of Toronto in The Annex
• Check out the website
Kimpton Saint George, located at 280 Bloor Street West between Huron and St. George Streets, just opened its doors on June 19, 2018. The boutique hotel company’s first ever Toronto location is a sophisticated-yet-playful respite along the Bloor Street Culture Corridor bridging luxurious elements of bordering Yorkville with the bohemian hipness of the Annex.
Kimpton Saint George Hotel, lobbyIn honour of the Saint George’s commitment to arts, culture and philanthropy, the hotel welcomed its first guests Jeffrey Remedios, President & CEO of Universal Music and Board of Directors member of MusiCounts, and Lucia Remedios, Owner of Toronto’s Analogue Gallery, on opening day.
Bertrand Mangeot, General Manager of Kimpton Saint George, said: “We are thrilled to open our doors to bring our uniquely personal and authentic boutique hotel experience to Toronto and to welcome our esteemed first guests. Whether our guests are here for a dose of local arts and culture, business meetings or to enjoy the city’s dynamic culinary scene, the Saint George looks forward to offering that heartfelt Kimpton service and care our guests will come to know and love.”
With design and interiors conveying the nuances of neighbourhood life from Toronto-based interior design firm Mason Studio, in collaboration with Kimpton’s Ave Bradley, Global SVP Design & Creative Director, and Diana Martinez, Design Director, Saint George brings an exciting new 14-story hotel that seamlessly integrates elements of Toronto’s culture and personality. Its 188 artfully designed guest rooms, including 20 suites and a Presidential Suite, give guests a distinct sense of place with gentle nods to the Annex’s heritage homes and community in its contemporary design and all of the right residential touches.
As central to the hotel’s design story, virtually all of the art pieces are original works by Canadian artists, and every finish, colour selection, piece of furniture and object has meaning and a story to make guests feel the warmth and community of Toronto. Beginning with guests’ arrival, the hotel exterior features a hand-painted owl mural by renowned Toronto street artist, Birdo. The owl’s wit and curiosity symbolizes how guests unravel the hotel’s sense of discovery from one room to the next. From a heightened view of the city, the owl’s gaze shows the Toronto skyline – a beautiful view of the city from above.
In the reception check-in area, a sophisticated and original hand-painted mural by artist Tisha Myles depicts a misty Toronto-inspired scene, a nod to traditional landscape paintings. What’s more, a blue jay is seen flying over the mist, casting a patriotic spell over the distinguished piece of artwork. From the reception area, guests naturally flow into the Living Room, a refreshing departure from the fast exchange that is typical of a classic hotel lobby. Anchored by a focal point fireplace, the space is hospitable, inviting, casual and comfortable. The Living Room is the heart of the hotel, with a design that facilitates socialization and the locale for Kimpton’s popular morning coffee and tea service and evening social hour.
Fittingly located within steps of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Kimpton Saint George embraces the local community’s connection to music. Each of the hotel’s suites are equipped with TEAC turntable systems and vinyls from a variety of Canadian artists specially curated by Kimpton’s Director of Music, Lauren Bucherie, in collaboration with local record store, Sonic Boom Records. From the guest room corridors to the elevators, the music is carefully selected for every zone of this hotel – a nod to the many musicians that got their start in this neighbourhood, particularly through folk music.
Guest amenities at Saint George include all of Kimpton’s signature offerings, such as its “Forgot It? We’ve Got It!” menu of travel and vacation essentials; luxurious Atelier Bloem bath amenities; free Wi-Fi for IHG Rewards Club members; and health-minded wellness options, such as complimentary use of custom designed PUBLIC bikes, 24-hour access to the hotel’s fitness centre and in-room yoga mats.
The Fortunate Fox Gastropub
Adjacent to the hotel, and also accessible through Saint George’s living room, The Fortunate Fox is a hip gastropub that offers a familiar yet refreshing experience. The Fortunate Fox is an elevated take on the classic pub, with a menu of made-from-scratch items and a great selection of local craft beers and cocktails that can be paired with any dish. A soon-to-be neighbourhood staple, The Fortunate Fox has something for everyone – travellers, locals and students. The restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and will be servicing the hotel’s meetings and events, as well as in-room dining.

Four Days And Nights Of Rumba In Havana Cuba November 8 to 12 2018
From a media release:
Four Days And Nights Of Rumba In Havana, Cuba
November 8 to 12, 2018
Postmambo Cuban Music Seminar #8: El Rumbazo #2
With Special Guest Pedrito Martinez
Love music - and travel? Who doesn't? Come along for a state-of-the-art vision of Cuban rumba, featuring 17 of the slammingest groups / soloists in spectacular sites around Havana. We call it a seminar, but you could call it a festival; both are true.
This is a history-making rumba summit.
I'm Ned Sublette, and my company Postmambo Studies, Inc., takes people on educational music travel in Cuba. We've covered the length and breadth of the island in the three-plus years since the US opening to Cuba of December 17, 2014. It's 100% legal for US citizens - and of course Canadian citizens too.
Participants in last year’s El Rumbazo heard eight sets in the first 36 hours. It's off the chain, and it's educational, and 100% legal for US travelers. In the course of our study of Cuban rumba, we'll hear 18 different groups in a whirlwind 4 days and nights around Havana. If you know rumba, you know this is the ultimate. Our guest of honor, Pedrito Martínez, is internationally the best-known conguero of his generation. He's coming back to his home town to play, and it's going to be incredible.
Pedrito will play a reunion concert with Yoruba Andabo, the group he was in before he came to the US in 1998, and he'll sit in with the world's greatest rumberos, including the legendary Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, as well as with Osain del Monte (who together with Pedrito played the Rolling Stones' party in Havana in '16). Besides the rumba stars of Havana, El Rumbazo #2 will bring to Havana killer groups from Cienfuegos (Ochareo), Camagüey (Rumbatá), Ciego de Ávila (Rumbávila), and of course Matanzas (Los Muñequitos, Rumbatimba). Special guests include new Cuban superstar pop sensation Daymé Arocena, drummer Yissy García with her group Bandancha, and Cuba's #1 electronic music artist, DJ Jigüe. There will be dance workshops, and encounters with musicologists, historians, and practitioners.
Havana is one of the safest places you can travel to, and it's never been easier and cheaper to fly to Cuba from the US and Canada.

Postmambo Music Seminars are open to the general public, with no prior qualifications necessary for participation. Each seminar so far (there have been 7 to date) has included professional musicians as travelers, as well as producers, filmmakers, anthropologists, writers, and all sorts of music fans. The World’s Best Journeys list for 2018 was created by a collaboration between Flight Network and 500+ of the world’s top travel journalists, agencies, bloggers, and editors – the ultimate insiders of international travel. This year, that list has included yours truly. I've been writing about travel (and traveling, of course) for decades, and I was happy for the chance to add my input.
This extensive collaboration produced a thoughtful and detailed list of astonishing journeys – a list that will captivate and inspire travellers to embark on life changing adventures now, and for years to come.
It's a truly inspiring collection of the top 50 transformative trips every traveller must experience in their lifetime. This inspiring resource is an unparalleled guide to diverse and dynamic adventures with exhilarating activities in the most stunning, mystical, and culturally-rich lands on the planet.
My vote helped to put the Jordan Trail at Number 44.
Red cliffs, JordanNo. 44
Hike the Jordan Trail
Umm Qais, Aqaba, Jordan
Established in 2015 by the Jordan Trail Association, the Jordan Trail covers 650km from Umm Qais to Aqaba. It was created to revive the tourism sector in Jordan, and it's about time the rest of the world came to appreciate the incredible history and geography of this storied region of the world. It should take you about 36 days to hike through this diverse landscape.
Your journey will span eight regions, ranging from lush forests to craggy deserts. Lace up your hiking shoes in Umm Qais then head south toward your final destination of Aqaba. Along the way, you’ll encounter 52 villages, allowing you to peel back the layers of this culture by tasting local cuisine, interacting with villagers, and even spending the night in homestays.
on the Jordan TrailHighlights of the trail include jagged cliffs overlooking the Jordan Rift Valley, the rose-red city of Petra, and the towering sandstone mountains of Wadi Rum. Be sure to pack your bathing suit as you’ll be passing the Red Sea, whose crystal clear waters take on an orange-red hue when seasonal algae blooms. This warm sea is home to the world’s fastest fish, the solitary sailfish, and has a thriving biodiversity, thanks in large part to its coral reef ecosystem.
Significant historical sites, such as the ruins of the ancient church of Mar Elias and the Islamic castle of Ajloun will also be encountered on the route.
Red Sea, on the Jordan TrailGetting thereBefore hitting the trail, you’ll need to fly into Queen Alia International Airport, Jordan’s main airport. Nonstop flights from North America depart from Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Montreal. Direct flights from Europe fly out of London, Paris, Istanbul, Frankfurt, and Rome. From the Queen Alia International Airport a taxi is the most direct mode of transport to Umm Qais, which is about 2.5 hours away. The trailhead is located at the basalt ruins of the Decapolis of Um Qais. Be sure to plan your hike ahead of time, or hire one of the many local guide companies who can help you make the most of this trail. Or, check out the volunteer-run Jordan Trail Association, which offers an annual through-hike.

Significant historical sites, such as the ruins of the ancient church of Mar Elias and the Islamic castle of Ajloun will also be encountered on the route.

From Nacional Records: Latin Bitman's New Video for "Truss Me"
From a media release:
Latin Bitman's New Video for "Truss Me"
The single features Juan Ingaramo & Jesse Baez
2nd single from his new album, Homies
• Stream, watch or play
Performed at the LAMC Central Park SummerStage show last week
Latin Bitman’s music has provided the soundtrack to numerous video game franchises such as EA’s FIFA, Need for Speed, and The Sims as well as TV shows such as Dexter, Nip/Tuck, and Weeds.
This video is special to Latin Bitman - aka DJ Bitman, aka José Antonio Bravo - as it was filmed in his hometown of Arica, Chile. Here's what he has to say about the video:
We wanted to really show the forgotten part of the city, the emptiness of the desert...a sort of Mad Max - the dust, the rust, and the passing of time.
This whole production was done with the help of childhood friends, and it was a very memorable and personal experience for me. Having the opportunity to reunite with old friends, with the people who I share great memories and stories, it was truly remarkable. Now, I'm thankful to be together during a new stage in our lives, each of us doing what we're best at.
Because of distance and time, it was impossible to have Juan Ingaramo and Jesse Baez in the video, and we had to create a more esthetic-based video. We had a lot of elements surrounding us that helped us. Santiago, the director, was amazing. We had a great time,.
Latin Bitman is one of the most prolific producers and DJs in Chile’s music scene. Born José Antonio Bravo in Arica, Chile, the former Olympic surfer started his musical career as Bitman & Roban before going solo with his debut album, Sunset Beats.
Since then, Bitman has released three solo albums as well as numerous collaborative albums as a member of Ritmo Machine, featuring Eric Bobo of Cypress Hill, and RVSB, with fellow Chilean DJ/producer DJ Raff. He has consistently pushed his musical envelope with his skillful blending of hip-hop, electronic, funk, soul, and traditional Latin sounds with each album.
Fans around the world have witnessed his on stage skills live at events such as the LAMC (Latin Alternative Music Conference), Vive Latino, Lollapalooza Chile (having performed at 7 of the festival’s 8 editions), Lollapalooza Brazil, Lollapalooza Chicago,
SXSW, and Estereo Picnic.

Afropunk meets Shakespeare Uptown in Antigone - Free in Marcus Garvey Park Harlem July 7 to 29 2018
From a release:
Antigone
Classical Theatre of Harlem
July 7 - July 29, 2018
Free and open to the public
• Directed by Carl Cofield
• The Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park
• Tuesdays through Sundays - 8.30pm start
NEW YORK CITY - It's not just Central Park downtown where you will find high end Shakespeare al fresco. Join CTH for its sixth season of free theatre performances in Marcus Garvey Park, affectionately known as the 'Uptown Shakespeare in the Park'. CTH presents “Antigone,” inspired by the Afropunk movement and derived from the classic Greek tragedy by Sophocles.
Back for its sixth season of FREE theater performances in Harlem's Marcus Garvey Park, the company presents a work that showcases the strength and voices of audacious women responding to rigid societal inequities. This modernized play showcases ancient ideas that have taken center stage in the current climate: order, law, justice and marginalized voices confronting power and patriarchy.
Set in the city of Thebes in a dystopian future, the struggle for power, glory and the claim to the city shatters the bonds of brotherhood, leaving two men lifeless. The new king proclaims one brother a hero and the other a usurper, leaving his limp body lying in the street as an example to those who dare act against the state. The citizens of the city avert their eyes due to fear, turning instead to their new leader who vows to restore order to the war torn city. But when the sister of the slain young brothers protests the edict, she breaks faith with everything she has ever known in order to set things right at any cost.
Calling on the cultural landscape of African-American traditions and inspired by the Afropunk movement, while also adhering to the Greek tragic form; this fresh reimagining of the classic story will captivate, stun and inspire audiences from all backgrounds.
Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park
Enter the park from 124th Street and 5th Avenue. Walk south to the amphitheater.

Country/Americana/Folk
Maxwell James - Maxwell James
(Independent, Mar 22, 2018)
• Stream it on Spotify
Singer songwriter Maxwell James' eponymous debut EP is a high energy collection of songs that you could loosely put into the contemporary Americana slot. Originally from Cardiff, South Wales, Maxwell is now based firmly in Nashville, TN, where it sounds like he belongs.
His verison of country/Americana is infused with a funky rhythmic heart in Roll Down Your Window Slowly. It revolves around a driving beat, with an inventive sense of instrumentation and phrasing to add to the effect.
Feed My Evolution is slow yet relentless, with a rising and falling tension that drives the song. Growling guitars contrast with churchy organ chords. Maxwell's tenor has a nicely raspy edge that gives it character.
Track List:
1. Roll Down Your Window Slowly
2. Feed My Evolution
3. The More You Say, The Less I Know
4. Blatantly
5. When It's Real
Musicians:
Maxwell James - vocals, guitar; Jason Cheek - Drums, Percussion; Chris Croce - Bass Guitar; David Dorn - B3 Organ, Wurlitzer Electric Piano; Scotty Murray - Electric Lap Steel Guitar

What can I say when I know that I'll be wrong? His lyrics are clever, giving country a poetic makeover with an ironic sense of humour in The More You Say; The Less I Know. The tracks offer a variety of styles and genres, including the rootsy Blatantly and a slow country waltz in When It's Real.
