A roster jazz cats from Beantown got together to create this project - The Pearcy/Gratzmiller Jazz Quintet - and it took ten years to compile the original tracks on their release, Over The Edge.
"Our goal in creating Over the Edge was to create a modern album that classic jazz listeners could also enjoy. We made an effort to capture the spirit and tradition of classic quintets from 50's and 60's while mixing in modern elements, particularly in the areas rhythm and song form. We think contemporary jazz can be soulful and fun, but inventive at the same time."
"Over the Edge" is the title of the PGJQ's debut album. It contains 10 original compositions written over the course of nearly a decade by co-leaders Wayne Pearcy (Trumpet) and Aaron Gratzmiller (Saxophone). Joining them is an outstanding rhythm section comprised of Matt Savage on Piano, Greg Toro on Upright Bass, and Fabio Rojas on Drum Set.
Old style musicianship and classic be bop meet modern improvisation on this stylish release. Composers Pearce and Gratzmiller possess an inventive sense of melody and rhythm, and use the classic tropes to create new music.
All the jazz stops come out in Beantown Bahp, including sparkling piano, bass and drum solos against a cool retro groove. Poor Man's Doctor has the kind of feel you'd expect to find late night in a big city jazz club, with interesting rhythms and a killer drum track that embellishes the beats.
Blues 88 unfolds to a slow and sexy rhythm, with the horns and piano trading riffs. It's the perfect soundtrack to a fashionable cocktail party, and harkens back to the days when jazz was danceable.
Over The Edge is a standout track, with fluid horn and piano over a kinetic rhythm section playing at breakneck speed. Yellow Mood contrasts its high energy output with a smooth and melodic ballad.
The Defector is an intriguing, upbeat track that lets Aaron Gratzmiller shine on the sax. His tone veers from high and clear to fat and rich. He takes the spotlight again on Pieces of Mind, contrasting with Wayne Pearcy's warm trumpet.
Take a bunch of jazz cats from Beantown with a love of classic jazz and the other foot firmly in the present tense, and you've got this enjoyable release.

Indie World Cinema: A Moment In The Reeds - Available in Canada & the US December 4 2018
From a media release:
Indie World Cinema:
A Moment In The Reeds2017 | Drama, Romance | 107 Minutes | Finland / UK | Color
English and Finnish with English Subtitles
• Available December 4 2018 in Canada & the U.S. on DVD, Blu-Ray & digital download
• Check it out at the link
The feature debut of Finnish writer/director Mikko Makela is a moving gay romance between a young Finnish academic and a struggling Syrian refugee, set against an idyllic Finnish summer. Filled with nuanced and sexually charged performances from the film's two openly gay leads, Finnish theatre actor Janne Puustinen, and openly gay Syrian actor Boodi Kabbani (who fled Syria and eventually settled in Finland, where he is based - he is one of the very few openly gay Syrian actors in the world), A MOMENT IN THE REEDS is a potent, inherently political, and remarkably mature exploration of an LGBT immigrant refugee's experience in today's world.
One of the first LGBT-themed films made in Finland, Makela's intimate drama places at its center the freedom and acceptance of sexual and ethnic minorities, amidst the backdrop of breathtaking Finnish lake country.
Indiewire called it "one of the best queer international films of 2018," and Edge said the film is "a fresh new voice in queer cinema...pitch perfect performances." Film Inquiry wrote "one of the most moving gay romances of recent years...full of sexually charged, intimate moments."
After world premiering at the 2017 London Film Festival and a year of critical success on the worldwide festival circuit, the film was nominated for The Discovery Award at the British Independent Film Awards. It also opened theatrically to critical acclaim in Finland this past summer. A MOMENT IN THE REEDS will now be available for all U.S. and Canadian audiences.
Written & Directed by: Mikko Makela
Starring: Janne Puustinen, Boodi Kabbani, Mika Melender
FILMMAKER BIO:
Mikko Makela, born and raised in Finland, is London-based filmmaker and actor who, feeling compelled to fill the queer void in Finnish cinema, decided to return to his native Finland to make his debut feature. Since studying English Literature and French at Nottingham University and University College London, Mikko has directed music videos and fashion films in London alongside working as an editor in drama and commercials. Having also studied Drama at City Literary Institute, he was earlier this year seen acting on the stage in the Arcola Queer Collective's revival of Mae West's 'The Drag' as well as making an appearance in John Cameron Mitchell's film 'How to Talk to Girls at Parties'. A MOMENT IN THE REEDS is his debut feature film.

Ian - A Film About Inclusion
From a media release:
Oscar-Qualifying Animated Short by MundoLoco Has Unprecedented Release in Latin America"Ian", available now on YouTube, shares the important message of inclusion
I'm a few days late to spread the word about this short film, but it's a film with a message that is always worth checking it out. On November 30th, Oscar-qualifying film "Ian" was released in an unprecedented joint effort from all major children’s Networks in Latin America: Disney, Discovery Kids, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, YouTube Kids and Pakapaka in Latin America and YouTube Worldwide.
This emotional film is based on the true story of a boy called Ian. The film was created by Emmy nominee Gastón Gorali, produced by Oscar winner and two-time Emmy winner Juan José Campanella and directed by Abel Goldfarb. This important film aims to help children to understand disability and for the message of inclusion to reach every home.
Ian was born with cerebral palsy. All he wants is to make friends, although it seems impossible to achieve when discrimination and bullying keep him away from his beloved playground. However, this young boy is determined and won’t give up easily.
“Ian” was produced at MundoLoco CGI using a unique animation technique that combined stop-motion sets made out of recycled waste with the latest CG technology. The film doesn’t use dialogue to express the children’s feelings making it inclusive to everyone regardless of their age, race, or language they speak.
The Ian Foundation was created by Ian’s mother Sheila Graschinsky to fight the lack of information that often leads to people with disabilities being bullied and feeling isolated. Sheila originally approached MundoLoco CGI with the idea of using film as a teaching tool and Gastón Gorali wrote the film around the real story of Ian.
Latin-American filmmaker Juan José Campanella has written, directed and produced international box-office hits, like THE SON OF THE BRIDE, METEGOL, and Academy Award winner THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES.

It is my hope that these songs will inspire you to honor the callings of your Soul and appreciate your value in the world, while holding your heart as you dare to stand in the face of difficult challenges. These are songs of hope, redemption, and ultimately Divine Love.
Gina GravesAt 46, singer songwriter Gina Graves found herself pregnant, a life changing experience that led her to compose the songs that make up this release. With a background in studying classical music and jazz, and a 20 year career as a professional musician and composer, she plays everything but the drums on this album (handled by brother Rich) and produced the release as well.
Her classical training is evident on tracks like Everything You Are, where her ethereal vocals float above atmospheric keyboard accompaniment that swells into an atmospheric and orchestral arrangement.
There are some lovely vocal harmonies on the release that lend a sweetness to the message of songs like If You Dare. The ebb and swell of the music helps deliver the message. It only gets better from here...If you dare.
In this moment I take flight
In my sovereign soul, I
I am light
I am light
I am light...
In I Am Light, it's just piano and voice, her delicate soprano the perfect vehicle to deliver that messaage. In Your Beautiful Self, the drum pattern adds a nervous kind of energy underneath the vocals and piano. Turn Blue is a standout track that goes through several moods, including a lovely contrapuntal section where vocals play against the piano and rhythm section.

About The Palace
Schloss Schönbrunn - or Schönbrunn Palace - was the principle summer residence of the Hapsburg rulers, their territories the precursor of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire. Located in Hietzing, Vienna, the palace was begun by Emperor Leopold I as a hunting lodge for his son, the Crown Prince Joseph. It was refurbished between 1740 and 1750, and was gifted to Empress Maria Theresa as a wedding gift. Subsequently, Emperor Franz 1 redecorated the exterior into the neoclassical style that it is treasured for today.
Schönbrunn Palace by Nagesh KamathThe palace is a splendid example of Northern European Baroque architecture, with its grand proportions and ornate aesthetic, including a series of sculpted gardens on the extensive grounds. The palace and grounds were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Since the 1960s, it has rightfully been one of Vienna's biggest tourist attractions, drawing millions of visitors each year to the 1,441 room structure. There are several tour options available.

Kelsey 2 is a new single from DannyDosha, blending styles and genres for an innovative sound in a crowded field.
Born into a musical family, Baltimore Maryland native DannyDosha, aka Daniel Maurice Barry, has been making hip hop records since the age of nine. An uncle was a hip hop producer, and a cousin worked as a mix engineer. He was listening to Sade and Luther Vandross on vinyl as a child, and was influenced by the hip hop greats of the 1990s. Just seven years ago, he moved out of the studio and taught himself to play guitar, studying jazz, blues, and rock styles.
You can hear a mix of influences on the track, an intriguing mesh of sounds that begins with a simple riff strummed on the guitar in rock minimalist mode. Then, the vocals begin, with Danny and Danielle Lee trading melodic lines. Next, a layer of oddly synched/unsynched rhythm and a moody guitar solo. The combination of flavours has a mesmesrizing quality that sticks in your head and demands replay.
Hoping to hear more soon from this talented artist. He lists his inspiration as cellist Kelsey Lu, with a three-part record in mind, so I'll look forward to Kelsey 3.

With an album just out on September 7, Australian singer songwriter Peter Senior is set to release a new Christmas single on December 7, with the proceedings going to help Australian farmers hit by drought. The new single is a rollicking pop rocker with the kind of flair he displays on the album.
Good times are coming
I saw it in a dream...
(Little Lovin')
Despite its name, On The Edge, the album, is all bright, bouncy piano pop in the vein of a Billy Joel - and with the same mix of pop and rock, with touches of country and Broadway for good measure. He's got an ear for catchy melodies and sparkling arrangements that add an almost theatrical sensibility to the release. Overall, the message is upbeat and empowering.
Peter's been singing at the piano since childhood, and he's been gigging with bands locally around Sydney since high school. On The Edge is his first release, and the response so far has been stellar. Cool Ride, the first single, debuted number 2 on the Australian itunes charts in the country genre. Baby I Love you was the second release and debuted at number 8 in the Australian itunes charts in the Pop genre.
Peter's voice is perfect for pop, with a nice range and the strength to belt it out on tracks like Little Lovin, and then croon on songs like Soft Rain, or Is This Real, with its existential musings above a piano line and atmospheric vocals.
I'm lost, but I'm trying to find the way
I'm trying to find the day...
The Edge, the title track, offers the only moodier sentiment on the album, and even its message leans towards resilience. Cool Ride, the first single off the album, is a stand out track that adds a jazzy trumpet line and harmony vocals above a driving rhythm section.

The Rose Ann Dimalanta Trio offers up a smooth slice of elegant, soulful jazz and RnB in It's Time, their latest full-length release. Rose Ann's big, beautiful voice is front and centre on the album, as it should be. She's got pipes that are big, but with a velvety finish that adds a rich tone.
The band goes through a number of genres and moods on the album with expert ease. Miles is the second single from the album, a slow and sexy jazzy RnB number. No Goodbyein', the first single, is a dancey electro-pop number with funky shades of classic Prince in the mix.
Forever Day by Day is funky, with interesting jazzy chord progressions, while 10 Miles to Empty ventures farther into jazz territory, with ethereal vocals and a jittery web of layered keyboard tracks underneath.
You don't need to know the band's background to be impressed by their chops, but if you do, it shouldn't come as a surprise. Based in Oakland, Ca, Rose Ann released 8 solo albums previous under the name rad, and played in Prince's band from 2003 to 2004 in the Musicology tour, along with performing at the 2004 Grammys backing up Prince and Beyonce. LA based Raymond McKinley (bass) has roots in gospel music, and has played with iconic artists like Patti Labelle, Sheila E., Tower of Power, and George Duke. Swiss born Berklee alumnus Massimo Buonanno is a seasoned session and gig drummer in Europe.
Dinner For One is a classic piano ballad, with Rose Ann's voice dancing around the spare keyboard chords and whispery cymbals. It breaks into a slow groove - one of the highlights of the release.
Happily's Never After is another stand out track, where the straightforward poetry of the lyrics complements with layers of keyboard and drum lines.
I wish I could love you
For more than one night at a time...
Measure of a Man is moody and atmospheric, with soulful vocals that carry the messag of love and respect. True to its name, Latin Soul adds a distinctively southern Latin rhythm to a contemporary jazz instrumental track.
On keyboards, Rose Ann adds layers of inventive accompaniment to her own vocals. That's All finishes the album with a nod to the classic jazz ballads of yesteryear. It's yet another mode where the ensemble excels.
Polished musicianship and a playful sense of invention give this release a big playback factor.

Rose Ann Dimalanta Trio - It's Time
(Independent / November 16 2018)
• Stream it on Spotify
The Rose Ann Dimalanta Trio offers up a smooth slice of elegant, soulful jazz and RnB in It's Time, their latest full-length release. Rose Ann's big, beautiful voice is front and centre on the album, as it should be. She's got pipes that are big, but with a velvety finish that adds a rich tone.

The band goes through a number of genres and moods on the album with expert ease. Miles is the second single from the album, a slow and sexy jazzy RnB number. No Goodbyein', the first single, is a dancey electro-pop number with funky shades of classic Prince in the mix.

Shadow of a Stone - Songs of Remembrance
(Bluecafe Music / 6 November 2018)
• Stream it on Spotify
• Buy it on CDBaby
Geoff Gibbons takes folk music back to its roots in this EP, not only when it comes to musical style, but in lyrics that talk about everyday human realities. In this case, that focus turns to the realities of war on a human scale, and a tribute to that sacrifice on the eve of Rembrance Day.
Shadow of a Stone plays an almost military style rhythm against a softer guitar line and soulful vocals. It evokes the wide prairies and a mournful mood while the lyrics are an elegy to the fallen soldier.
Never laid down my life for something I believed
But here, I believe in the world you left to me.
He adds a twangy guitar solo, and it adds to the effect.
Please Remember Me is a classic traditional folk tune with a Celtic infusion of accordion, and an upbeat rhythm. It tells the timeless story of a soldier going off to war, and leaving his loved one behind.
Soldier Soldier finds him in a grittier examination of the realities of the common soldier, stripped of sentimentality.
Nobody cares what you paid,
What you lost,
Or what you saved...
A moody violin line contrasts the elegant finger picking guitar line. It's a stand out track. The Other Side tackles the soldier's struggle to reconcile his conscience with his deeds in war. A lovely thick three-part harmony chorus and twangy banjo blend with a relentless rhythm.
A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Geoff is a musician, producer-engineer, and composer whose work has been on including Higher Ground, Just Cause and Robson Arms plus animation: Mook and the adult comedy series The Mr. Dink Show - winner of the jury prize for Best Animation at the New York International Film Festival.
In his 20s, he earned experience playing the tourist circuit on Australia's Gold Coast, before returning to Canada to form the duo Silverlode, opening up for acts like Emmylou Harris, the McGarrigle Sisters, David Crosby, and Levon Helm and Rick Danko of The Band.
Geoff Gibbons offers an inventive take on acoustic roots folk that tells a universal story of soldiers at war that resonates as much today as in - sadly - any other era of human history.
This Tribute EP "Shadow of a Stone - Songs of Remembrance" can be heard on Spotify and purchased at I-Tunes or CD Baby All Download/sales proceeds going to the Wounded Warriors Project. Thank-you for supporting."

Acoustic Roots:
Twisted Oak - Cold Coffee and Half Smoked Cigarettes EP
(Independent / September 21 2018)
• Buy it on iTunes
• Stream it on Soundcloud
Cold Coffee and Half Smoked Cigarettes, is a story about moving on from vices. Both cold coffee and half smoked cigarettes are what would be left behind if someone had decided to rid themselves of physical addictions such as caffeine and nicotine. This imagery symbolizes the remnants of who that person was, but not what they've become. In the case of the story of the album, we see love as the central vice. Love can build someone up and break someone down, but the most important part of being in love is realizing that it is not ours to have. When we cling to a possessive love, we let it take over us. This album explores different aspects of this learning. (Twisted Oak)
Twisted Oak - aka Matt Batory - mines the singer songwriter territory in a minimalist mode, managing to wring expression and variety out of acoustic rhythm guitar and vocals alone. The 22 year old singer, songwriter and producer hails from West Milford, New Jersey, and he's been playing music since he was 14. The EP is his first solo release.
Matt Batory's mournful tenor perfectly suits the spare acoustic guitar arrangement and wistful lyrics of Back To Me. The words are clever and insightful, even as they go over the time honoured territory of love and loss.
Although I can travel on my own
You're the comfort I've grown to know
His vocals can be low and raspy, or clear and melodic in the higher register. He's got a nice sense of flow and rhythm to his phrasing that adds momentum to the song. Hold On displays a nicely varied sense of song structure, with harmoney vocals that add another layer of interest.
The title track is a poetic meditation on life against a rhythmic pattern.
Why do we hate to be alone?
Why does no one seem to know?
My one quibble is that his voice is so much richer and more expressive in the higher register than the lower. It's evident on You Ran, where the contrast pops out.
Twisted Oak is a solid addition to the singer songwriter catalogue, lit up by intriguing lyrics and a driving sense of rhythm that characterizes most tracks.
