Bonnie Lautenberg: Art Meets Hollywood captures the creative zeitgeist between legendary filmmakers and iconic artists

BOCA RATON, FLA  The new exhibition “Art Meets Hollywood” is the museum premiere of Bonnie Lautenberg’s new series of digital collages, 28 diptychs pairing scenes from famous films alongside iconic works of art. Lautenberg’s only rule for her experimental process is that both the film and the artwork originated within the same year.

1957 – Funny Face / Clyfford Still, PH-971 1957 – Funny Face / Clyfford Still, PH-971

On view now at Boca Raton Museum of Art, Lautenberg channels the creative zeitgeist between filmmakers and artists during each year that she intuitively chronicles, starting in 1928 up until 2020.

Lautenberg plays matchmaker to the 1957 movie Funny Face by combining Audrey Hepburn’s bold pose with Clifford Still’s painting PH971--both majestic, and both glamorous. When viewed together this way in the museum gallery, the combination seems to make perfect sense, as if they were made for each other.

In another work from this series, the terrifying scene she selects from the 1975 movie Jaws literally screams above a Willem De Kooning painting that conjures what could appear to be blood spilling into the water below . . .

1975 - Jaws / Willem De Kooning, Untitled V 1975 - Jaws / Willem De Kooning, Untitled V

Her pairings can also be surprising and intriguing: who would have imagined the 1963 scene of Paul Newman from the classic movie Hud would look so ideal next to Warhol’s seminal painting of Elvis from the same year?

“Lautenberg pulls together visuals she feels speak to each other, taking us along on her colorful trip to explore how these two art forms have amazing parallels and are beautifully paired,” says Irvin Lippman, the Boca Raton Museum of Art's executive director.

“Through her careful considerations, she brings to life each moment in time, the spark of creativity these pairings might have shared. She possesses a keen eye on the visual elements of humanity and culture that arise."

1965 – Red Desert / Lucio Fontana 1965 – Red Desert / Lucio Fontana

During the past five years she has worked on this series, Lautenberg made a crucial discovery: the artist Lucio Fontana was so moved by the Antonioni film Red Desert that he created one of his largest red paintings, influenced by what he saw up on the big screen (pictured above is the pairing of the two, by Lautenberg).

“This solidified my belief,” says Bonnie Lautenberg. “Throughout art history, artists have always been influenced by some force going on in the world around them.”

“I started thinking about how artists who work in different art forms might have influenced each other. I decided to explore how one art form can influence another,” adds Lautenberg.

"The brilliance of these juxtapositions is how she illuminates the psychological connections between each film scene and artwork,” adds Lippman.

In her 2016 digital collage, Lautenberg combines a scene from the film Hidden Figures with the painting by Mark Bradford Tomorrow is Another Day.

Lautenberg is an artist, photographer and writer based in New York and Palm Beach. During the past 30 years, her works have been featured in gallery shows, museums and art fairs throughout the United States. Lautenberg’s work is currently on view at the New York Historical Society’s Center for the Study of American Culture.

Lautenberg pairs the painting by Georgia O’Keeffe titled Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 with a scene from the film Grand Hotel featuring Greta Garbo (both from 1932).

Some of Lautenberg’s pairings in this series featured at the Boca Raton Museum also stem from her own personal history.

In the 1960s her father purchased the Stuart Davis painting Hot Still-Scape for Six Colors ‒ 7th Avenue Style. In this pairing, she juxtaposes the Davis painting that she admired as a child growing up in her family home, with a scene from the 1940 film The Philadelphia Story (pictured below, both from 1940).

1940 – The Philadelphia Story / Stuart Davis, Hot Still-Scape for Six Colors - 7th Avenue Style 1940 – The Philadelphia Story / Stuart Davis, Hot Still-Scape for Six Colors - 7th Avenue Style

The family eventually sold the painting some 25 years later. Ultimately, the painting was donated to the Boston Museum of Fine Art. Years later, Lautenberg was reunited with the painting when she visited the museum and was heartened to see it was still in the same frame it had during the many years when it hung over their family fireplace.

This new exhibition in South Florida, Art Meets Hollywood, opened at the Boca Raton Museum of Art concurrently with another celebration of films and artmaking, Art of the Hollywood Backdrop: Cinema’s Creative Legacy. Both shows together at the Museum are a dream come true for cinephiles.

Pictured above from the Museum exhibition is Lautenberg’s “1952,” her combination of a scene from Singin’ in the Rain with Yayoi Kusama’s painting titled The Sea (both from 1952).

This year marks the 70th anniversary of Singin' in the Rain, one of Hollywood's most beloved films of all time. It was directed by Gene Kelly who also starred in this Hollywood classic. In honour of the film's milestone anniversary, Warner Bros. Studio is releasing a new 4K Ultra HD version of the classic movie.

At the opening reception for Lautenberg’s exhibition at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, one of the special guests of honor that evening was Patricia Ward Kelly (the widow of Gene Kelly). She is the Creative Director of the Gene Kelly Legacy Project in Los Angeles.

In keeping with Bonnie Lautenberg's keen ability to tune into the zeitgeist, this newly released high-resolution anniversary edition of the film is currently making headlines around the world with screenings across multiple cities and at major festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival.

Lullaby for Guli is the latest single to be drawn from Mohamed Assani's 2020 release Wayfinder. It's a musical ode to mothers everywhere.

Muhamed Assani - Wayfinder CD

Throughout the whole album, Mohamed draws from all his influences, both Western and Eastern, to create evocative musical journies. You'll hear elements from a cornocupeia of styles, including Indian/Pakistani Classical, Middle Eastern, jazz, funk, Western Classical, ambient, and electronic music.

Awakening, the first track, leans heavily into Middle Eastern and Pakistani elements, while Serendipity blends those threads into a hypnotic electronic dance rhythm. It's a kind of fusion music with a real sense of freshness and imagination.

The new single is called Lulla by for Guli. “Often a child’s first experience of music is in the form of a lullaby sung to them by their mothers. This was definitely the case for me - my mother sang me lullabies and told me wonderful stories - stories that shaped me and how I viewed the world,” he says in a release.

The track is melodic, with a lush sense of arrangement, and interesting instrumentation over an insistent rhythm that develops over the course of the song. Produced by Juno and Emmy nominated producer Adham Shaikh, the recording captures all the layers and nuance of the music.

Muhamed Assani

Based nowadays in Vancouver, British Columbia, Mohamed Assani’s musical journey began at Dartington College of Arts in England, where he earned a degree in Western Classical and World music. He studied sitar with a master in the traditional way, and became a senior disciple of Ustad Ashraf Sharif Khan of the Poonch Gharana .

Career highlights include co-writing a sitar concerto that was performed by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, performing for his Royal Highness the Aga Khan, and being invited to teach at London's prestigious Royal Academy of Music.

Personnel: Mohamed Assani - sitar, tabla, vocals and all compositions; accompanying musicians : Ustad Shahbaz Hussain and Curtis Andrews

New Age/Neo-Classical | Aleksandra Takala: In My Own Time (Independent / October 1, 2021)

New Age/Neo-Classical
Aleksandra Takala: In My Own Time
(Independent / October 1, 2021)

The genre lines get blurry in the music of Northern California multi-instrumentalist Aleksandra Takala. Her compositions take you on evocative journeys through melody and shifting moods.

Aleksandra Takala - In My Own Time CD

“This collection of all instrumental New Age & Neo-Classical styles contain 12 new compositions. Instruments include Acoustic & Electric Guitar, Woodwinds and Brass, Castanets, Italian Grand Piano, Acoustic & Electric Bass, String Orchestration, Percussion Instruments, Choral Voices, Church Bell, & Harp.

“The songs are shorter in length than the pieces on my first album, Visions & Emotions. This doesn't mean incomplete in any way. I want the listener to become involved with the interpretation, so that the music reflect parts of themselves,” she says in a release.

Well worn themes are seen with a fresh sensibility. Spanish Isle uses the sound of maracas in a traditional rhythm, while the melodic elements explore various moods.

Suite Nightmares & Daydreams is an atmospheric track, where the sound of a flute can transform from melancholic to dreamy to agitated. Aleksandra skillfully creates mood and emotions in the music.

Aleksandra blends a background discovering the classic pop of her childhood and teenage years alongside Western classical music, beginning studies at the piano at age 25. She also studied music technology to add to the mix.

“Classical music still leaves a great influence on me, but in the Eighties and Nineties I also began getting into new age music, seeing bands like Shadowfax, and guitarist extraordinaire, Michael Hedges, and listened to Windom Hill Label artist on Nirada Collections.”

“I turned to creating new age music because this genre is especially good about imparting feelings and pictures to the listener, be it is joy, hope, love, sadness or spiritual uplifting. It is what comes out when my fingers touch the keyboard, and it leaves interpretation up to the listener.”

Each track has a story to tell, and the titles suggest a mood that is fleshed out by the music. Helpless to Help spirals downwards in a minor key, with a moody string section.

En Tiempo perhaps most closely resembles a traditional piece of classical music in its outlines, in structure, harmony, and the way it explores various musical themes.

With a range of instrumentation and intelligent composition, the tracks offer a lot of replay value.

Tracklist:  1) Spanish Isle; 2) Suite Nightmares & Daydreams; 3) Helpless to Help; 4) En Tiempo; 5) Big Sky Ride; 6) A Tribute to the People; 7) Song of the Redwoods; 8) A Time to Say Goodbye; 9) A New Day; 10) Dance of Delight; 11) Silva’s Ride; 12) Masada Overture

There's a man with a gun so you'd better beware...

Newcomer songwriter/producer Mr. Grossman and veteran singer-songwriter Patrick Ames come together in a new single inspired by the fateful events of the January 6, 2020 attempted coup in Washington.

F.W.I.W. builds layers of groove, from keyboards to percussion to bass to vocals. It's got a hypnotic rhythm that incorporates recorded sounds and dialogue, emulating the chaos of the day.

Mr. Grossman provides all the instrumentation and production, with Ames on vocals. Ames has just the right sense of emotional understatement to make the meaning of the words pop out.

"The imagery came first - the dark signs, hidden threats to safety and against nature. Then realized this was coming from my ongoing concern about the rise of anti-liberal and overtly fascist movements," comments Mark Grossman in a media release.

"Musical elements came from decades of influences floating through - from 60's era anthems like Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth, Gill Scott-Heron's TRWNBT to Traffic in the 70's, to today's inspirations like Beck and Chelsea Wolfe. I had recently banked some home-grown percussion samples - sandpaper on concrete, and a suspended crowbar dropped onto said concrete - and these fit right into the feel of the track. I don't always like the way my singing fits with my compositions, so I enticed Patrick to do lead vocals, and this lent the necessary darkness and grittiness!"

Ames started writing songs in 1968 when he was 14 years old, and while he was active in bands in college, he turned to book publishing, dropping music for about 25 years.

It's an interesting collaboration, with perhaps more to come in the future.

If "keep it simple" had a musical expression, it would likely sound something like Doll House from Bloomingdale, Illinois's The Skye Bleu Crew.

Skye Bleu Crew - Dollhouse

The song was written for vocalist Jen Botka by Keith Fallico (any relation to basist Dominic?). The song blends elements of country rock and Americana, given shape by Botka's polished vocals, from clear highs to a growly lower register. Layers of guitar and percussion weave in and out of the melody underneath lyrics about a love gone right.

It's under 3 minutes, but feels just right.

You'll delve into more than the music with Unfortunately Steven's new release Groovy Avocado Disco - you'll delve into his story.

Unfortunately Steven CD

The album includes songs written and recorded between 2016 and 2020 in response to multi-instrumentalist and lead vocalist Steven RamirezGroovy Avocado Disco, is an acronym for Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

"The concept of the album is a full therapy session from start to finish. From walking into the session a human balloon filled with crippling anxiety and depression, to leaving deflated and ready to take on the week," Steven says in a release.

That journey takes him through breakdowns and therapies, including the medications that eventually helped.

"The medication makes it tolerable to live and no longer feel bad, but the unfortunate side is that I no longer feel good. I don’t feel depressed (yay) but I’m also not happy. The album  demonstrates that awkward middle ground where I have nothing left, but all of the nothing I have is for the listener. The reality for me is that there isn’t really a happy ending or any ending for that matter. This is a reminder that it takes continuous work and effort to fix your mind."

But, what's it like musically, you're wondering? He's assembled a veritable crew of musical collaborators for a rich instrumentation (see personnel list below). The result is groovy, dancey music...that fades into the opening of  a therapy session...that fades into a song about his state of mind that, musically, is a kind of cross between keyboard ballad and Beatle-esque melody with a dash of Klezmer.

The album is meant to be heard with the tracks in order, as they tell a story. While the music is polished, and slips easily in and out of genres, the lyrics are unfiltered - titles like People Are Stupid and The Art Of Failure tell it all. The songs are interspersed with snippets of his therapy sessions, each less than a minute in length.

He lists his influences as the Beach Boys, and his melodic take on pop reflects that. He's got a nice sense of songwriting that results in a range of moods and modes, and a story that comes through in the lyrics. His clear tenor has a ring of sincerity that fleshes out the story.

"As a society, we tend to shy away from dark thoughts or depressed feelings but they are simply a part of the human condition. Everyone deals with struggles and people who say they don’t are living in denial. My goal for this album is to establish the harsh realities of mental illness, and what it’s truly like in the mind of an anxiously depressed individual," he says.

Peace of Shit is both an amusing title and a standout track, an appropriately punk expression of the sentiment. Help Me Randall is another interesting track, with a spooky jazz kind of feel. Without listening to the words, you'd be forgiven for just bopping along.

Groovy Avocado Disco is quite a ride through lush multi-genre pop that tells a gritty and realistic story about mental health.

Dave Vamfer, aka David Reggie Phillips, is rolling out his next album with a new track - and a difference. The track is actually a medley of three songs - singles he's releasing in advance of a new album.

The music is firmly planted in classic rock territory, American style, with the welcome addition of a sax, and a nice fat organ sound, to flesh it out.

As a songwriter, he's got a nice turn for earworm melodies over a catchy beat. It's radio-friendly rock with a nice attention to detail.

"Starting to write a song usually comes quite easily to me. More often than not I start with a sentence or phrase, I know what I want to say, how it should 'feel' and how it should come over. From there, I 'instinctively' get an idea for a melody that fits. However, I don't usually finish a song quickly. Usually I work on it over a period, maybe days - but usually weeks, and quite often a lot longer," he says in a media release.

The lyrics are infused with worldly wisdom and a wry sensibility.

I thought tomorrow would be better than my past,
Expected something new..
I thought the future would bring better days,
And some of my dreams would come true
But it was just one of the tricks of this life....

A native of London, UK, Dave has been in and out of bands since he was a teenager, and is now located in Folkestone, Kent.

Experimental & Electronic | Chris Ianuzzi: Maze (Satellite Symphonics / 8 April 2022)

"My interest in electronic music never waned after the sound of a Moog synthesizer at a music store triggered an earlier childhood hallucinogenic memory I first experienced during a dental procedure."

Chris Ianuzzi - Maze

New York-based electronic music wizard Chris Ianuzzi takes experimentation into the realm of his music videos as well as his music. He incorporates AI tech (including a CLIP-Guided-Diffusion notebook called Disco Diffusion) into his new music video (below), created by Ethem Serkan Sökmen and İlke Köse.

Rooted in genres like IDM, industrial, ambient, glitch and techno, Ianuzzi likes to take things in unexpected directions. Upbeat, danceable, trancey and spacey - the music is all that and more, often at the same time. Hunger has a sense of urgency (appropriately), augmented by a mesmerizing combination of glitch and rhythm.

March of Madness adds sampled opera vocals and a bouncy beat, cartoony voices and lyrics that flow like a trippy story. Moods veer abruptly from bizarre to sinister to ethereal. In Saturday Night Confession, he gets close to a standard song structure, then veers away into a blitz of bubbly electronic sounds and odd harmonies.

"Though I have become a bit more grounded since my childhood psychedelic musical awakening, my creativity remains a driving force. Using classic analog synthesizers in conjunction with the most current digital technologies, my goal is to create immersive performances."

Chris Ianuzzi

"Maze set to be one of those albums that pushes the electronic music universe to expand just a bit more; On Maze, the ambient sound design and general woo feel are still there, but they take a backseat to more organized noise elements and post punk-style vocals."

All the electronic experimentation amounts to multiple shades of expression. In Infinite Prize, the mood is minimal, semi-melodic, and melancholy. Shuttles, in contrast, is bouncy and arithmetic. Lonesome Highway Superstar is like a rock song that's gone off the rails, with a splash of Middle Eastern rhythms here and there, and a visceral beat that creeps into the mix.

Fans of any kind of electronic music will enjoy Ianuzzi's sure hand as he plays with the genre's infinite possibilities.

Eric Anders and Mark O'Bitz explore the rich possibilities of the acoustic duo in their latest release, Variant Blues. It's their third.

Anders' expressive tenor and simple instrumentation flesh out stories about the state of the world, accompanied by musicianship that has polish - but not so much polish that it interferes with expression.

It's part of their four-part "Music in the Time of Coronavirus" series.

Speaking on their two most recent releases, "Stuck Inside" and "Variant Blues", Eric Anders says "Both albums are full of songs that try to capture something about these times of a global pandemic, climate change, and the rise of new forms of very old right-wing ideologies.  Some through references to history, some with references to the poet Emily Dickinson, and others that are more directly about these troubled times we live in."

"We had hoped to go into the studio to finish these albums during the spring and summer of 2021, but the Delta variant kept us all at home.  These two albums were done almost completely remotely--90% remotely--with regard to the three principles: me, Mark O'Bitz, and Mike Butler, our producer."

Far Gone has the easy acoustic groove of a classic era rock ballad. Gorgeous harmonies supplied by Jenn Grinels accentuate Anders' soulful tenor with a folk-rock sensibility. Those lush vocals carry the earworm refrain in Oh To Leave Here.

We'll Get There Soon is a standout track, exemplifying the duo's strong songwriting chops. It has a laidback groove you'll find yourself bopping to, with a melody that will stick in your head.

Eric Anders & Mark O'Bitz

Bang Goes The Gun is another memorable song, an emotional ballad with a spare instrumentation - strummed guitar, and lonely harmonica and slide guitar lines that weave in and out of the melody.

You may find yourself thinking of Tod Rundgren and similar songwriters and singers. In Just A Game, they need only vocals, acoustic guitar, and a mournful cello to convey the mood.

The lyrics cover the vagaries of love and the frustrations of society with an equal attention to the poetry. Tired Love talks about what happens when the fire of lust turns to everyday love.

Now I'm with you everyday now,
And the kids sometimes they fight
So there's really nothing wrong you see,
Nothing I see...

In 2007, the duo’s song "So Wrong" from Tethered to the Ground was used in the Michael Schroeder film, Man in the Chair, starring Academy Award winner Christopher Plummer.  The song "Big World Abide" from Tethered to the Ground was used in TV shows: the Dutch soap opera Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden, and the Courtney Cox TV show, Dirt.

Personnel: Eric Anders - Vocals; Mark O’Bitz - Guitars, Piano, Keys; Mike Butler - Producer, Guitars, Bass, Keys; Jenn Grinels - Backing Vocals; Matt Lynott - Drums; John O'Reilly Jr. - Drums

Track List: Far Gone; Oh to Leave Here; We'll Get There Soon; Err on the Side of Love; Bang Goes the Gun; Beyond Silence; Just a Game; Dusk Comes Too Soon; Tired Love; Lopsided Gyre (Revisited)
