Breakthrough Entertainment presents
LOOKING IS THE ORIGINAL SIN
a film by Gail Harvey
Opens in Toronto
Carlton Cinema – 20 Carlton St.
Begins November 22, 2013
During this run, a rare exhibit of Gail Harvey’s photos will be on display at the Carlton Cinema.
CAST
Maria del Mar, Katie Boland, Linda Hamilton, Kent Staines, Jayne Eastwood, Dewshane Williams, Kris Holden-Reid
(Toronto) Fresh off the heels of its world premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival, comes the Toronto theatrical premiere of director Gail Harvey’s now award-winning film Looking Is The Original
Sin, having most recently picked up a Best International Feature Film award from the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival.
The film will screen at the Carlton Cinema, beginning November 22, and with this theatrical run comes a very rare photo exhibit of director Harvey’s works. The exhibit will consist of approximately 50 photos, half of which were in the film, and others that include Harvey’s stunning trademark photographs including portraits of celebrities.
Looking Is The Original Sin follows the journey of 19-year-old Anna, played by Katie Boland (Gail’s real-life daughter and co-producer along with co-star Maria del Mar, of the film). Partly inspired by the tragic life and work of famed photographer Diane Arbus, Looking Is The Original Sin is a story about “love, loss, discovery, alienation and the transformational power of art.”
As the daughter of an acclaimed, depression-prone “outsider-art” photographer named Helene (Maria) Anna has grown up with pressure from multiple directions. She is at once her mother’s daughter and mother’s “mother,” fretting over her disappearances and feeling guilty with the burden she has placed on her. With a camera in hand, Anna seeks to find an identity by retracing the absentee Helene’s footsteps, and hopefully to solve the mystery of her disappearance via clues in her painful photos. Once immersed in her mother’s underworld, the question becomes, is Anna obliged to follow her into the darkness, or can she create her own destiny?
“When Whitney Houston’s death happened,” Gail continues, “the similarity of that news with the story in my film, made me feel sad for Whitney and her daughter. So many artists through the ages have had difficulty in living life in a happy and fulfilling way. Maybe if you see and feel so much it makes it hard to be ‘normal.’
Katie (recently named Playback’s ’10 To Watch’) welcomes the chance to share in her own mother’s career, and admits there are surface parallels in Looking Is The Original Sin. “My mom previously was a photographer, says Boland, “and she always photographed life as she lived it. But the mother in this film is very different from my mom. She’s mentally ill and unstable, and my mom is incredibly stable. But our relationship is definitely infused in everything we do together.”
Looking Is The Original Sin was produced by the generous support of ACTRA Toronto, and produced with the participation of Telefilm, Canada. Written and directed by Gail Harvey, Director of Photography: Peter Benison, Colin Hoult, Josh Fraiman, Gail Harvey. Edited by John Nicholls, and Composer was Dillon Baldassero. Produced by Gail Harvey, Katie Boland, and Maria del Mar. Breakthrough Entertainment has world rights for distribution.

Los Macuanos, a buzz-heavy trio that brings together traditional Latin rhythms with modern electronic dance beats, have announced their debut album “El Origen” will be released November 19th on Nacional Records.
The group has already been featured at NPR, PRI/BBC’s The World, MTV Iggy and Vice, who described them as the “Mexican Kraftwerk.” They also recently had 2 songs featured in Indio Beer ads
Los Macuanos belong to a generation of producers that came of age in a violent and rapidly-changing political climate in Tijuana, Mexico.
Like many of their contemporaries, their productions echo a once hedonistic lifestyle, taking cues from the rave styles of the era, with elements of minimal techno, dubstep and glitch. Their music has since evolved with a more nuanced, stylistic approach that incorporates live instrumentation and elements of cumbia and norteño.
Los Macuanos' “Ritmo de Amor” is used as the theme song to a cutting-edge show on Seattle tastemaker station KEXP.

Buddies in Bad Times Theatre Toronto Presents The Gay Heritage Project November 17 to December 8 2013
From a media release:
THREE OF CANADA’S LEADING THEATRE MAKERS OFFER AN IMPORTANT INVESTIGATION INTO LGBT HISTORY
The GHP Collective in association with Buddies in Bad Times Theatre present the World Premiere of
THE GAY HERITAGE PROJECT
by Damien Atkins, Paul Dunn & Andrew Kushnir
NOVEMBER 17 - DECEMBER 8, 2013 | BUDDIESINBADTIMES.COM
TORONTO- Three of our country’s most gifted creator/performers set out to answer one question: is there such a thing as gay heritage? In their search, they uncover a rich history not often shared and shine new light on contemporary gay culture. The result is a hilarious and moving homage to the

Buddies in Bad Times Theatre marks its 35th anniversary with a timely investigation into queer history.
Developed over the past three years in the company's Artist Residency Program and presented in workshop at The Rhubarb Festival in 2011, The Gay Heritage Project marks the partnership between three of Canada's premiere queer theatre makers and the country's largest queer theatre. The project is helmed by creator/performers Damien Atkins (recently onstage in Soulpepper's Angels in America), Paul Dunn (PIG at Buddies in Bad Times; Dangerous Liaisons, Peter Pan, Anthony and Cleopatra at Stratford), and Andrew Kushnir (creative director at Project: Humanity and writer in residence at Tarragon Theatre). The show is directed by Ashlie Corcoran (Artistic Director of The Thousand Islands Playhouse and director of A Boy Called Newfoundland for Theatre Smash) and features designs by Kimberly Purtell, Thomas Ryder Payne, and Cameron Davis.
THEATRE PROJECT FILLS A GAP IN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF LGBT HISTORY
After centuries of queer history being hidden in the closet and the loss of almost an entire generation to HIV/AIDS, The Gay Heritage Project is an important step in the excavation, preservation, and promotion of a community's cultural history.

Paul, Damien, and Andrew bring these people and stories to life on stage in rapid-fire succession using a highly physical, comedic, and fast-paced performance style. They offer us an eclectic mix of historical characters and reenactments that shed light on the forgotten champions and occurrences that created our community. In doing so, they educate us about our past and inspire us to further unearth an expansive but overlooked part of our history.
THREE OF CANADA’S LEADING THEATRE MAKERS COLLABORATE FOR THE FIRST TIME
With The Gay Heritage Project, three powerhouse performers and writers come together for their first major collaboration. All three are well established on stages across the country, and have been key players in seminal works at Buddies.
It was Paul who originally planted the seed for The Gay Heritage Project. In researching a role he was playing in Hannah Moscovitch's East Of Berlin, Paul came into contact with the book The Men With the Pink Triangle by Heinz Heger – a horrific account of one man's ordeal as a gay prisoner in Hitler's concentration camps. Paul had a visceral reaction to the story and was overcome with a feeling of having an ancestor through a kind of queer lineage.

Buddies is thrilled to welcome these esteemed artists back to our stage for this important project. Each have played key roles in seminal works with the company. Damien's solo show Real Live Girl was one of the most successful projects the company has presented, Andrew premiered his first play Captain Princess at Buddies, and Paul Dunn played starring roles in shows as recently as this season's PIG and as far back as Robin Fulford's Steel Kiss and Gulag and Greg MacArthur's Snowman.
