Tunisian vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Emel Mathlouthi captivates with her intimate, lyrical style, fierce rock beats, and throbbing trip-hop and north African influences.
globalFEST '15 alumnus Mathlouthi tells the story of HER Tunisia: the dark years as a young rebel and dissenter; the strife of being a female musician; her artistic and ideological struggle after her songs were banned from the radio and TV; the dual love and suffering that came from longing for home while living in a free country.
Her music inspired Tunisia's Arab Spring revolution in 2011 and offers "resolve and passion," writes Jon Pareles. "Each song is a narrative, unfolding in multiple sections, moving between delicacy and fierce tenacity, mourning and defiance."
She stars in the 2014 release No Man's Land, a documentary about the female voice in Iran. She will release her upcoming Iceland-produced album this spring.

Travel/Art - In Search of Bauhaus: Dessau, Berlin & Weimar

In Search of Bauhaus: Dessau, Berlin & Weimar
The Bauhaus, or Staatliches Bauhaus, was an avant-garde movement in modernism that sprang into being in 1919 in Weimar, Germany, when Walter Gropius founded a school of design with a unique philosophy. It was one of the first academies of design and brought together leading architects and artists of the time. The Bauhaus philosophy synthesized fine arts, architecture, crafts and industrial design in a movement that exerted a huge influence on everything that came after.
The Bauhaus logoGropius gathered together a who's who of avant garde artists of the day, including Lyonel Feininger, Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer and László Moholy-Nagy, assembling them at his school in Weimar.
The school featured innovative teaching methods and workshops and produced work that still influences the world of art, architecture and design today, including the trademark cuboid functionality as an architectural principle.
Tracing the path of Bauhaus from its inception to its folding under threat of the hostile and newly elected National Socialist government in 1933 makes for a fascinating way to explore culture, modernism and early twentieth century German history.

Berlin
In 1932, the Bauhaus school relocated a third and final time to Berlin. Closely linked as it was to the Weimar Republic that was established between WWI and WWII, it became an instant target of Nazi aggression - the Nazis accused the school of being a hotbed of communist intellectualism - and folded for good in 1933 with their rise to power. Today, Berlin is home to the world's most extensive collection on the history of the Bauhaus school at The Bauhaus-Archiv.

This is the first single from the Chaco World Music release PETRONICA - Petrona MartÃnez Electronic Suite Vol.1.
This album is an eclectic journey that takes the listener through a unique tapestry of sound: Electronic beats with native Colombian drums, modern synths with ancestral vocals, traditional grooves with modern production techniques, and the local ethnic culture of Bullerengue of distant Colombia with the global culture of Electronic and Alternative Music.
Petrona Martinez's original music is ancestral, organic and mainly percussive with infectious grooves and outstanding vocal performances. "Petrona's influence has played a major role in the emergence of the current independent music scene, on which, young urban musicians discover and experiment with traditional musics from contemporary settings. This marks the very first time that a selected group of DJs, artists and producers are invited to collaborate with Petrona and her original production team" quotes Manuel Garcia-Orozco, Petrona's music producer and the brains behind the PETRONICA project.
The eclectic Suite offers a tasteful palette of moods and styles including House, Electro, Drum n' Bass, Afro-Beat, Minimal, Tropical Bass, Lounge and Pop among others. More than 500 recording hours were necessary to produce PETRONICA in 20 cities including New York, Los Angeles, London, Bogotá, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Amsterdam and Athens. From a media release:
GHANA'S ROCKY DAWUNI GOES FOR GRAMMY GOLD
Branches of the Same Tree (Cumbancha - March 31, 2015)
• Listen and buy
• If you are in Accra - get tickets to his Homecoming Concert December 18, 2015
We are happy to announce that Cumbancha artist Rocky Dawuni's latest album, Branches of the Same Tree, has just been nominated for a GRAMMY in the Best Reggae Album category. Dawuni, the only non-Jamaican artist in the running this year and the first Ghanaian to be nominated, is up against some of the heavyweights of modern reggae including Morgan Heritage, Luciano, Jah Cure, and Barrington Levy. It is also marks the first Cumbancha album to receive a GRAMMY nomination.
Reflecting on the prestigious nomination, Dawuni says that he feels, "truly honored and at the same time humbled. I’ve always focused on giving my best in my work and it’s a good feeling to know that it is being appreciated. I am grateful for the recognition. Branches of the Same Tree is about stressing the common roots that we all share in this human family. It inspires the listener to aspire to a place of hope. It’s about having faith in the power of compassion and oneness."
The final ballots to determine the GRAMMY winners are due by January 15th, 2016. If you are a voting member, we encourage you to include Rocky Dawuni on your ballot. The 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards will broadcast live on CBS on Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
About the album 'Branches of the Same Tree'
Influenced by the soulful beats of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, the positive messages and deep grooves of Bob Marley and the infectious, sing-along anthems of Michael Franti, K'naan and Matisyahu, Rocky Dawuni's songs straddle the musical boundaries between Africa, the Caribbean and the US to create a universally appealing sound that unites generations and cultures.

Hot Jazz, Cabaret & More: Town Hall NYC Presents Gotham Holiday Swing December 18 2015
From a media release:
THIRD SMASH YEAR!
Town Hall Presents: Gotham Holiday Swing
featuring
Butler, Bernstein & The Hot 9 with LEE FIELDS, MERCURY REV, HAL WILLNER, TERRY REID, Madeleine Peyroux, Raul Midon, Carole Bufford, and Basya Schechter
Hosted by Buster Poindexter
• Friday, December 18,2015
• Doors 7:30pm / Show 8:00pm
• Tickets Start at $45
NEW YORK CITY - Butler, Bernstein & the Hot 9, alongside host Buster Poindexter, celebrate the holiday season with a swingin' program of New York and New Orleans tunes old and new, featuring all-star guest musical appearances and readings by New York personalities including soul singer extraordinaire Lee Fields, alt-rock band Mercury Rev, Brit-rock icon Terry Reid, impresario Hal Willner
(reading from W.S. Burroughs' The Junky's Christmas), jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux, guitarist and singer-songwriter Raul Midan, cabaret star Carole Bufford, vocalist and Pharaoh's Daughter leader Basya Schechter, and more to be announced. Now in its third year, previous guests included Ira Glass, Jon Batiste, Nellie McKay, Garrison Keillor, Regina Carter, Sofia Rei, Anat Cohen, Monica Bill Barnes, The Hot Sardines, and many more.
New Orleans singer/pianist Henry Butler and trumpeter/arranger Steven Bernstein are two students of early jazz with decidedly modern voices. Together, with their band The Hot 9, they are setting new standards and writing fresh history. Blind since birth, Butler tells stories through the rise, swing, and rumble of his fingers as they channel sounds as diverse as his Louisiana birthplace: jazz, Caribbean, classical, pop, blues and R&B, among others. A giant among giants, he is a member of a special brotherhood that also includes Professor Longhair, James Booker and Allen Toussaint. His technical ability and expansive repertoire are legendary.
A veteran of New York City's downtown scene and a GRAMMY-winning arranger, Bernstein juggles a forward-looking perspective with a rooted sense of what's come before. Known for his work with The Lounge Lizards and SEXMOB, he's also the leader of the Millennial Territory Orchestra, a nine-piece ensemble that draws tunes and inspiration from the dance orchestras that toured the U.S. before World War II. "Their collaboration is both historically aware and fully prepared to cut loose," remarked The New York Times. (emcee Buster Poindexter pictured left)
The Town Hall is hosting a food drive in conjunction with Gotham Holiday Swing in partnership with City Harvest. Their organization delivers food to nearly 500 emergency food programs including soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters, AIDS care providers, senior centers, and children's daycare centers that serve hungry New Yorkers in all five boroughs. We are honored to work in tandem to help those in need throughout our city. On the night of the show we will accept dried food, food in boxes, cans, and bottles. Patrons can find collection areas as they first enter the lobby.

Let's face it, there's nothing better than drinking and eating your way out of the mid-winter doldrums. Icewine is a personal favourite - rich and sweet but not cloying like sugary liqueurs. It's a type of wine that can only be produced in a very few regions of the world where wine grapes can grow - and where temperatures in the winter reach below -9 Celsius. The grapes are left on the vine to continue to mature and ripen until the temperatures hit that low - typically in January or late December and the result retains the fruit's inherent sugars. Sweet, yes, but sweet like the fruit itself and not sugary.
The Niagara Region is one of the lucky places to experience those extremes in climate and have the soil for wine grapes. For three weekends in January, the Niagara Region is transformed into a wintry wonderland, celebrating one of Canada’s most cherished products - Ontario Icewine. From Gala evening toasts to chestnut roasts, ornate ice bars, ice skating and winery tours, the 21st Annual Niagara Icewine Festival offers plenty for every taste.

Slow Fashion: Textile Museum Of Canada To Present Rebecca Burgess Founder Of Fibershed January 27 2016
From a media release:
SLOW FASHION:
TEXTILE MUSEUM OF CANADA TO PRESENT REBECCA BURGESS, LEADER IN SUSTAINABLE FASHION AND FOUNDER OF FIBERSHED
Wednesday, January 27, 2016 - 6:30pm
Textile Museum of Canada
Part of the Series: Conscious Consumption: Crafting the City
• Tickets $20
Toronto – The Textile Museum of Canada (TMC) is pleased to announce the upcoming presentation by renowned ecologist Rebecca Burgess, founder of the Fibershed movement, on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, 6:30 pm. Rebecca Burgess established Fibershed in California in 2010 in response to the
environmentally devastating impact of “fast fashion” and global industrial textile supply chains. Now an international movement with affiliates around the world including Upper Canada Fibershed in Ontario, Fibershed is a model for local production and consumption using sustainable resources such as hand-processed organic cotton, wool and natural dyes in the making of textiles and clothing – the epitome of “slow fashion.”
A cooperative approach involving a range of members from farmers and land use planners to artists and fashion designers, Fibershed has also drawn former fashion industry workers from Ralph Lauren, Abercrombie & Fitch and other companies who are realigning themselves away from high-volume global markets to hand-crafted local economies. Called an “eco-warrior” in The Atlantic in 2011, Burgess is an educator, writer, and natural dye farmer, recently authoring the book Harvesting Color. “I enjoy knowing the biological roots of where everything comes from. Behind everything we own, use and consume is a story,” she states.
In Toronto, Burgess will speak on the “150 Mile Fashion Footprint,” highlighting her experiences with sustainable fashion and the connection between consumption and production at the heart of Fibershed’s commitment to making garments sourced entirely within one’s own community. “Rebecca Burgess’ ideas are being taken up throughout the USA, Australia, the UK and Canada,” says Shauna McCabe, Executive Director of the Textile Museum of Canada. “We are thrilled to introduce this leading activist and thinker to Canadians who embrace the future of fully conscious consumption.”
The TMC is pleased to present Rebecca Burgess with the support of the K.M. Hunter Charitable Foundation. The lecture followed by a reception will take place on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, 6:30 pm, Textile Museum of Canada, 55 Centre Avenue, Toronto, M5G 2H5. Admission is $20 per person; purchase online at the link or call 416-599-5321 x2228

Dundas West restaurant now serving full dinner menu, share plates, premium vodkas, cocktails and craft beers
Toronto, ON - After dominating the Toronto food scene for over two years as a pop-up restaurant and festival favourite, The Saucy Pierogi (TSP) is now open on trendy Dundas St. West (1282 Dundas St. W.). The restaurant pairs creative Pierogi dishes with a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere.
“This menu is without a doubt Polish in its DNA but since we’re in Canada, we wanted to celebrate its ingredients in our dishes,” says Konrad Obara, owner. “I wanted to blend traditional Polish cooking techniques with “out-of-the-box” flavour combinations in a cool venue with good vibes.”
Meant to be shared, the dinner menu features pierogi stuffed with gourmet fillings like braised beef, pulled pork, jerk chicken, and classics like cheddar potato. Pierogi and all other menu items are made in house; including soups, stocks and schnitzel. The cocktail and beer menu features signature cocktails, founded on the classics as well as a rotating craft beer menu and both premium and rare vodkas.
TSP blends a standing cocktail bar and sit-down restaurant, serving through to late night, offering house creations inspired by traditional polish Pierogarnia. The lively atmosphere is suitable for a quick after-work snack or a top spot to end an evening on the Dundas and Ossington strip.
TSP’s 1000 sq. ft. interior seats 77, with 10 comfortable stools at the bar. Boasting floor-to-ceiling front windows that slide open for the summer, and wood finished accents under candle lit table tops; the venue draws a warmth and rustic balance to the contemporary design, which, displays Polish-street art and photography throughout.

The Saucy Pierogi is open from 6pm until Late, Tuesday-Wednesday, and noon-12am Thursday through Saturday.
