Offical Launch of my Etsy Store and Art Page

Well, I'd planned to have this done by November 1st... but my life is running about a month behind! I could blame it on my new job, but I think spending as much time as I did playing the Sims, when pets came out, has more to do with it than going back to work...

This weekend, I am officially launching my Etsy Store (http://www.etsy.com/shop/hbpattskyn) as well as
Helen Pattskyn Art, here on Blogspot. I'm not posting my paintings over on Etsy, but I've been working with polymer clay and making both polymer clay and wooden rune sets, so little by little, those and my new line of primitive goddess and god statues will get posted to both my new page (http://helenpattskynart.blogspot.com/) and my Etsy store. Have a look and tell me what you think...or buy one! (No pressure, seriously... but you know, if I could make just enough money from this independant art thing and writing books that I didn't have to have a "day job"--or if maybe I could cut back to two or three days a week--that would be super cool! I do love my job, but I would much rather spend my time writing great stories and making cool stuff!)Helen Pattskyn, Fantasy Artist, Gay Romance Author

TGIF!

I am especially happy, because I'm not scheduled to work this weekend!

On top of that (which is no small thing, I worked yesterday afternoon, and I've got about 10 minutes before I have to run out the door), I just got an email letting me know that Heart's Home is fully edited and is being turned over to the production department! Whoo-hoo!!!!!!!!!!!

However, I am utterly convinced that editors simply do not sleep. The email was time stamped 2:16 AM. Seriously. Two in the morning. Editors simply do not sleep.

Last night, after work, I went to meet with the critique I belong to. Chapter Two of Bound to Please was on the chopping block... and did it ever get shredded!  It's funny, ten years ago, I might have come out of that feeling devastated--but last night, I came out happier than ever to have had ALL the mistakes pointed out, as well as some good ideas on how to fix them. And this from writers who don't really read the erotica genre. (Yes, that does mean that occasionally they hit on something 'wrong' that isn't really 'wrong'--like "is it all right to have this much sex?" in a book? but good writing is good writing, plot holes are plot holes, and usually they are spot on.)

I bring this up mostly to  point out the importance of belonging to such a group. Writers need each other. We need constant feedback from objective readers (and let's face it, Great Aunt Tilly isn't likely to be objective, even if she does teach the second grade and knows a thing or two about proper punctuation.)  Most of the time, our friends and family want to make us feel good (or at least they should, but that's another matter for another post). And it's good to get positive feedback--certainly I got plenty of that as well. I was actually surprised at how well everybody liked my Dom, Henry; I expected him to be coming off as a total prick (which he isn't, so it's good to know the readers saw him as he is.) But even better than positive feedback is "negative" feedback. I put that in quotes because I don't think of it as negative at all, even when it starts out with "I thought it was kind of icky" (said the fellow who has never read this sort of thing before--at which point the rest of the group laughed and said "oh that was NOTHING, you should see some of the stuff she submits!")

Which brings up the other point of belonging to a writers group. Camaraderie. Yes, my main reason for going is it give and receive feedback (because critiquing other people's work also makes you a better writer, if you're observant enough to see where you make the same mistakes as someone else). But there is also something really good about sitting with other people who share one's passion--be it writing, knitting, astronomy, what-have-you. I enjoy the company as much as the feedback--but that said, I wouldn't go if this were just a social club. If you're going to invest time in a group you need to have some idea going in what you're looking for; if all you want is a support network, that is FINE. That's what some people need. If you need more, you may have to look a little harder...but it's worth the search.

And on that note, I'm off to work!

Happy Friday!!

Don't forget to join me on Dec. 24th for a live chat
and don't miss the
December Stuff Your Stocking give away!

It's still not too late to get in on my give away, either!(send your name, address, etc. to my OTHER email: helenpattskyn@gmail.com) Helen Pattskyn, Fantasy Artist, Gay Romance Author

Thursday

Is it really Thursday already???

Yikes. I am, as usual, hopelessly behind on EVERYTHING.

I'm sure the editor for the ghost book thinks I've fallen off the face of the earth. I have until the end of Decemeber to submit 14 more 2000 word chapters. Bleep!

Okay, tomorrow.

No, really, I have to work today, in just a few hours, so while I may get my notes together so I'm set up to work on it tomorrow, I doubt I'll get much writing done until then. I was so planning on being done with most of it by now!

In better news, I have reached "the end" of my Work in Progress novel, which is an amazing feeling. It still needs lots and lots of polish, but I can let it sit for a bit while I hammer out the ghost book.  My WIP is a BDSM/kinky themed m/m romance called Bound to Please. I'd shelved it for a while because I wasn't sure I would ever be able to sell it. There is seriously sex (or sexually charged exchanges) on nearly every page--but at least one person has said it works the way it is and I trust Tia's judgement.  (I was also having a hard time finding a stopping place. Last nigth while I was re-writing, I realized I had found the last chapter. That meant chopping nearly 20,000 words... but I'm saving them for later. Maybe a short story or novella or something.) Currently, it's sitting at 62,000 words.  I'm sure it'll gain a few (and lose a few) as I edit.

I got the idea for this one at PenguiCon last year; there were a couple of cute little fanboys walking around, one of them in a mesh shirt. I was sitting at a table in the dealers' room, kitty corner from a guy selling leather goods.

Leather goods + cute fanboy = hot romance novel!

Now let's see if I can sell this thing. After I polish it.

After I write 14 more chapter on the ghost book. (To put that into perspective, even working, I can probably crank out a chapter that's ready to head off to my editor in two days--one day to write, one to edit.)

Okay, off to organize my notes.

But before I go, here's a heads up about this really cool give away I'm participating in (I'll post about it again, around the beginning of December).  Click HERE  for more information about the Christmas Blog Hop Stuff Your Stockings Give-Away!

Laws that make you go "huh?!"

Not because there is anything inherently wrong with the law, it's just mind boggling that some things need to be put into legislation.

Yesterday, I was driving home from a wonderful Shamanic weekend with Crow and Bekki in Ohio. I decided to catch a little local radio along the way and this is what I heard: before the Ohio State legislature is a law that would make it illegal to text while driving.

Isn't it common bloody sense that you can't flipping TEXT while driving?! It's bad enough that some people talk on the phone (occasionally guilty of that myself, although I try to keep it really short, pull over, or tell the person calling me that I'll ring them back when I stop for a break). But seriously, in order to text, you need to take your eyes OFF the road so you can see the keypad. What kind of asshat is busy looking at his/her keypad when they should be watching their fellow drivers (who, let's face it, can be pretty moronic, especially if lawmakers actually have to make it illegal to bloody text while driving!)? Is that text from you bff so important it's worth risking an accident?

And yes, I'm swearing. A lot. Because I cannot get over the fact that lawmakers need to take up their time with garbage like this when there are bigger issues that require their attention.

There's a company trying to open up a mine almost literally in my friends' back yard. Coal mining and fracking (Battlestar fans: is that not the correct term to describe the process? Fracking right, it is!) have devastated Meigs county (and other areas as well, to be sure...this isn't just an Ohio problem, we're dealing with it in Michigan and in other places as well). We all know the economy sucks. We don't really know what to do about it (everybody has an opinion, but as far as what will work? Who knows.) Yet lawmakers have to sit around Capitol Hill holding our proverbial hands telling us not to do something that we all should bloody well know is a Bad Idea.

Seriously, when are people going to grow up and start taking responsibility for themselves? When are people (you know, that broad group of human beings we don't really know, but speak of anyway) going to act with respect for themselves, their neighbors, and our planet?

Okay.

I'll get off my soap box, get some coffee and go back to writing romance. You probably like me better when I'm being sweet and sappy anyway.

I got my cover for Heart's Home over the weekend--check out the sidebar. And remember the give-away. Come on, make a writer feel loved, tell me how much you want a free copy of my book!

And for pity's sake, do NOT text while driving, whether it's illegal where you live or not.

If you don't know what fracking is... it's scary stuff. Fracking scary stuff.

Off my soapbox.

Getting coffee.

Give Away

November is upon us and that means two things:
Whichever Winter Holiday You Celebrate is closer than you think, and...My first original novel, Heart's Home, will be out NEXT MONTH!
So... in the spirit of giving, I'm doing holding a special Give Away, predominately for my wonderful and loyal fanfiction readers--those of you who gave me the courage to write an original novel, yet who have suffered for it, since it's meant so much time away from fanfiction writing. Here's what you have to do to qualify:

Email me at: helenpattskyn@gmail.com (this is NOT my regular email address; this box is much less active, so I won't miss anybody). Please put something like Give Away in the Subject (not an official requirement, but it'll help me identify the email)In the bod of your email, include your Name and Snail Mail Address (rest assured, I will not sell your address to anyone, or show up on your doorstep at two o'clock in the morning asking for coffee and pineapple danishes..) P.O. boxes are okay, as long as your post box company will let you accept packages. You absolutely must send me your snail mail address in order to win/receive something.
I will randomly pick winning "numbers" out of a hat (e.g. the fifth person who sends in an email will be a second place winner, etc.)

Now, the fun stuff, what's up for grabs:

Three Second Place Winners will receive: A hard (i.e. paper) copy of The Ossuray and Forget Not Me, bound together with two never-before-seen short stories: What happened when Kam looked in the Ossuary and What happened when John Hart looked in the Ossuary.  Those are two of the most frequent requests I've recieved. (This is going to be a professionally bound book most likely through Lulu.com. However, it won't ever be for sale on their site--or anywhere else for that matter.)

Two First Place Winners will receive the above book PLUS, a copy of my original novel, Heart's Home.

In order to win the first place prize you absolutely MUST understand that Heart's Home is an erotic romance . On a scale of 1-5, with 1 being Jack and Jill (or maybe Jack and Ianto?) went up the Hill and 5 being a no holds barred accounting of what Jack did with Ianto AND Jill (or maybe Rose? And/Or the Doctor??) up on that Hill, Heart's Home is about a 4.5. (Seriously, there are four or five sex scenes, with precious little is left to the imagination; I like to think there's more to those scenes than just sex, but the point is that there is sex and it's fully described.)   If for any reason at all you do not want to read about two hot guys having extremely passionate sex with one another, but still are interested in a chance at the third and second place prizes, just say so in your email. If you happen to be a first place winner, I'll swap you out with one of the second place winners).  No one has to like smut as much as I do in order to win.
I will take you at your word that you're old enough to read randy sex between passionate men in whatever country you happen to reside... and as a quick point of note, there are no restrictions on where you live. I know I'm lucky enough to have a few of loyal readers who live outside the U.S.

Now... it would probably help if I told you a little bit more about Heart's Home :

Set in Victorian England, Heart's Home is the story of Police Constable James Heron and outcast werewolf, Alun Blayney. Meeting over the body of a woman murdered in the streets, the pair form an uneasy friendship.

As both the relationship and the murder investigation progress, James and Alun must overcome a series of obstacles, including the daemon who has fallen in love with James, a sadistic werewolf pack leader who has it in for Alun, and James's immediate supervisor who is convinced that Alun is not only responsible for the recent string of murders, but the Whitechapel murders of the previous year, as well.

The title comes from the idea that when you find true love, your heart's true home, no obsticle is too great to overcome. So, in a nutshell, the usual angsty goodness you've come to expect from me. I was hoping to have the cover art before I posted this, but I'm still waiting for the final copy...but seriously, it is AMAZING!
All books given away will be autographed by yours truely and sent out via snailmail just as soon as I have copies in hand (don't have a solid publication date for Heart's Home just yet)... and the first one hundred people who enter with their name and snail mail address will get a little something from me as my way of saying "Thank You" for all your support. (And just to repeat, no addresses will EVER be made public, and I really won't show up on your doorstep... but if you ever want to bring me coffee or pineapple, just look on the side panel for the places I regularly attend and come see me!)

Legal bits: no purchase necessary, and although I'm giving away fanfiction, I'm not making any money off other peoples' copyrights, etc. Duh. I'm giving this away. On a technicality, I'm loosing money.

The contest will run from TODAY through December 10--so spread the word and sign up! This *is* my sneaky way of establishing a mailing list of people I can badger with updates on my writing, but hey, you get something in return for letting me pester you once in a while, so... (and I promise not to badger you too often. You've seen how often I blog, right? That should give you some indication how how much spare time I have!)

Winners will be announced on this Blog on December 10. Prizes will be mailed out just as soon as I have copies in hand to mail (for which I am partially at the mercy of my publisher).

You can check back here for more information on that publication date--and you can also check out my publisher, Dreamspinner (Dreamspinnerpress.com) for not only more on me, but more on lots of other great m/m erotica!  Dreamspinner publishes only m/m (and m/m/m) and they are truly the top of their field. When I say I'm proud to be a Dreamspinner author, I mean it!

I'll probably be giving away another copy of JUST Heart's Home during my release celebration/chat on Goodreads... just saying. It's worth your time to come by and say "hi" on Dec. 24th, too! Helen Pattskyn, Fantasy Artist, Gay Romance Author
