Comic contests

pictureroom:

I often get asked about how to get involved in publications, and I always reply to keep your eyes on the internet because there’s always contests and open calls coming up. Of course, some are better opportunities than others, and right now there is two that I think are really worth a shot, since they both offer a prize in cash! Check them out:

Foxing Quarterly’s comic contest

Foxing is a new magazine from Austin, Texas that intends to publish not only comics but also literature and poetry. In the two issues they’ve put out so far, they already have published work by Michael DeForge and Patrick Kyle, not to mention that they print beautifully in full color, all excellently designed by Jim Rugg. Their comic contest will be judged by Anne Koyama and will grant the winner $250 plus 25 copies of the issue in which their work will be published. More info here!

Comics Workbook composition competition

This is a contest put out by Frank Santoro, to participate you have to create a comic abiding to a format he proposes in the guidelines. In short, you have to create a 14 page comics (plus a cover and back cover), each page composed by a grid of 8 panels. There are prizes for the first 3 places, and the grand prize is $500 in cash. More info here!

Good luck to everyone participating! I think they’re both great opportunities, and even if you don’t win anything, at least you will have made a finished comic!
