check out this first installment of a new series of interviews and features of other cool webshops im doing at the gatosaurio blog!
Webshopping at Price Tapes with Mickey Zacchilli
Hello friends! Today I present you the first of a new weekly series of features and interviews that I will be doing on this blog titled “Webshopping”. In the past two years I’ve felt like small online shops have boomed tremendously, maybe thanks to new webshop services like Storenvy and Squarespace, or maybe just because more and more people have realized how easy it is to make some extra money with what they love doing. Whatever the case, I’ve been feeling more and more like we’re all just promoting ourselves, shouting repeteadly into the void of the internet “buy my stuff, buy my stuff!”. I’m a bit bored of this self-promoting cycle, so Webshopping will be my way of shouting “buy from this other webshop too!” Also because I wanted to hear everyone’s crazy stories about the post office. I hope you’re into it!
Price Tapes is Mickey Zachilli’s label and online store for all sorts of cool stuff ranging from patches, comics, apparel and tapes. She is currently blowing up the internet with her patches, through which she transmits her positive vibes of a perpetual “who cares?”. She’s also the dog behind “Cool Dog”, a dog who is cool and who is being fundraised right now so she can, once again, reproduce him on thousands of stickers and other novelty items. I got in touch with her to know more about all these cool things she does.
How and when did you start your webshop?
i can’t remember when, but i started with a big cartel account to sell comics and tapes, then eventually switched over to storenvy.
You offer such a diverse range of items in your store, from experimental tapes, comics and even a jiu jitsu rashguard. What’s your creative process for products?
process differs from project to project. recently i’ve had a lot of fun doing design stuff…for things like tape covers and the rashguard, there’s a template and i fit the design within the template, obviously i guess… but i feel like it turns itself out more if if i think about it that way. the tape covers are pretty simple and the rashguards are also pretty simple, but more identifiable as something i made…. i guess i’ve enjoyed making stuff people couldn’t identify as my work if they saw it out in the world. i mean, since i have such a heavy drawing hand… it’s pretty limited visually. and designing little things comes from the inclination to be more free with stuff…. which maybe is kind of backwards. and i guess, no matter what i do… eventually i’ll always just feel trapped within my own aesthetic. is this answer even relevant? haha
I feel like you started doing patches fairly recently and now you’ve gone all out with them. How did that happen?
well, it’s fun and fairly easy to come up with ideas for them, i really enjoy designing them, i don’t have to fabricate them myself, and they are small and very easy to ship. ;-) people also really seem to like them.
What do you like the most about selling online? And what do you like the least?
it’s great to be able to just have a stupid store open all the time, even if it’s online. it’s also pretty hands-off… unlike a real store. the seasonal lulls can be pretty rough but i guess that’s true of any store. i guess i like it the least when i mail something and the customer doesn’t get it! as you’ve experienced.
Do you have any crazy stories about your local post office?
my post office is incredible, everyone who works there is a fucking angel!!!! olneyville p.o. 02909! shout out to cathy, denise, joann, galvin and the rest of the gang!!!
I know you also table at festivals frequently. How do you like it in contrast to selling online?
it’s pretty exhausting sitting behind a table all day… but, in terms of moving units it feels pretty good! also it’s nice to hang out with people i don’t see very often, or only know on the internet. i do get pretty overwhelmed! change of scenery is always nice though.
What new things can we expect to see soon on your webshop?
more patches… maybe some dice. more t shirts… eventually a new design. new comics….i move pretty slow! so, who knows? :-)
What’s the deal with cool dog?
cool dog is a good dog. he is best conveyed in sticker form. people love stickers. he is to be shared with all the people of the world. if you want a bunch of cool dog stickers, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: cool dog, p.o. box 3481, providence, ri 02909
