Wine and Sadness
Nehemiah 2:1 And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.
Nehemiah had advantages and was in a good position. He had a vantage position to obtain favors from a powerful king. It was easy for Nehemiah to forget about Israel and just move on with his life. This is what many have done and still do, celebrating testimonies and joys which do not consider the true state of the Bride of Christ.
Amos 6:6 That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
So many continue to enjoy in the palace and have no grief for the afflictions that touch God. Nehemiah had no courage to talk to the king nor did he want to take advantage of the relationship he enjoyed …but he could not disguise the sorrow in his heart …for the state of Israel. Many do not know or feel the burdens of God … all they care for is the gains that they must have or their own deliverance. Nehemiah should have preferred to be free and to be able to go and build his own house … a free man. After all, many had been freed … but Nehemiah was not as concerned for his own freedom.
Selfishness is a terrible sin, easy to disguise and often cloaked in selfrighteous garb. It is a sickness of the heart that is not always easy to diagnose. What do you care about? Do you have any afflictions that have nothing to do with your own bondage? Even in business, there must be a greater objective … something above just making money and living in comfort and luxury. There should be a higher motivation … I call it a burden of God that is linked to your business proposition. Something that makes you sad until you do something about it … and not a selfish deliverance too. There was wine for Nehemiah to drink as he served in the palace … the king abhorred a sad face in his palace, Nehemiah feared he would be thrown out … as he could taint the king whose mood must always be kept up and cheerful. The consequence of his sadness could only be more trouble for him …yet he could not help himself.

The King’s Cupbearer
Nehemiah 1:11 O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s cupbearer.
Often we begin a situation wondering how God can bring a vision to pass. We have passions given by God and awesome dreams to do good … but the path to reality seems impossible. There seems to be no way, but God always has a way …God always has a bridge you can walk on to cross the river separating you from your dream. Nehemiah was the king’s cupbearer … a servant of a heathen king who was very unlikely to be sympathetic to Nehemiah’s cause …or so he thought. What do you do …when there is no way to progress your vision for an idea? You look around and see where you are and who is with you …close by is the “king” that God will use. It may not be a king or someone you think God can use, but you have been given access to the vessel God has chosen to use for you.
Nehemiah cried for mercy … a cry for mercy is a plea for God’s intervention. God controls all minds …not just the obedient but the disobedient …even the evil can – like Nebuchadnezzar – be turned to an evangelist in the way and manner God chooses. Open your mind and eyes … God has positioned a contact for you … to help you achieve His own purpose. Nehemiah could have asked for other personal favors … to progress his own selfish interest … but he did not do this. Instead, he cried for mercy for God’s will to prosper.
Go to God concerning the plan and burdens He has given you … ask Him for mercy with the “contact” or “divine helper” He has positioned to prosper His agenda. Do not be tempted to be selfish … be sure your plan is God’s plan. If it is – God will cause it to prosper. Get ready to go to the “king”.

Thy Strong Hand
Nehemiah 1:10 Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.
The God we serve is not weak. Though we may be in weak circumstances …servants in exile, our God is not in exile and He serves no one. Nehemiah establishes the great truth that God redeemed by His great power and His strong hand. God does not beg anyone nor does He need anyone’s cooperation. None can withstand Him and none can dispute with Him. Because He suffers long and is patient … we often misread God to be weak. He is not. His hand is strong …unmatched in strength. His power is great … exceeding all human, political, military, natural and supernatural powers.
Our supplications and prayers should reflect the God that we serve. We can go to Him with great goals and impossible ventures … because nothing is impossible to Him. If you can figure it out, then it does not need the mighty hand of God. If you have seen men do it before, then it does not need the unmatchable power of The Most High. Go to God with the impossible situations in business. Tell Him of the great challenges … of which you have no way of managing. Let Him hear from your prayers that you serve a great God and your prayers, worship and faith reflect this greatness and unmatched strength.
How do you recognize the calling of God in business, Ministry, leadership, government or in family? Does it require God’s strong hand and great power? If it does not, it is perhaps your idea…and not God. Tear up that plan, it is too weak to be of God.

Repentance
Nehemiah 1:9 But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
It is not too late to come back and begin to do right. Nehemiah says if and not “when” . This means there is a condition to be met before God will restore. Repentance is not just a matter of words … it is not a game … you cannot manipulate God with a false repentance because He sees our hearts and knows all our motivations even from afar. But God is dedicated to respond to true repentance. He does not force Himself nor will He keep pleading … we can choose to remain scattered or decide to return like the prodigal son to Him. Let it be clear … we cannot remain in sin and expect grace to abound … we must receive grace to turn from all wickedness and sin and turn to God.
God has a better plan … a chosen place … the best ideas are in Him … the greatest successes can be found through Him. God wants to be glorified so He has set His name concerning a place, a situation that you cannot reach on your own. He says eyes have not seen nor has the heart conceived of that which He has already set. God is a God of unimaginable creativity … the ultimate creator. Do you know that when we turn back to Him, He can restore to His set place in ways we cannot imagine.
To turn to God means to admit our sin and accept that there is a better way in Him. To rediscover the truths of God and live by it … to return and to leave the wrong path and come back to the path of truth. There are many crooked paths …and the end does not justify the means in business as in many other things. Resolve in your heart and make a quality decision to love God with all your heart and strength … pray for repentance and ask for guidance to learn the right way before you pray for your business. Soon you will be full of divine ideas that will set you on a sure but different road to success.

You can learn from every experience …even mistakes and errors.

Scattered no more
Nehemiah 1:8 Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:
To be scattered is to be as though you have no purpose … to be drifting. A people scattered have no shared vision or understanding . A business scattered has no mission and no apparent goals or focus. A life scattered is here today but there tomorrow …direction-less, found in different places. The devil understands that when people or agenda are scattered, they are weakened by disunity … often working against themselves. They can no more achieve divine purpose. Remember the Tower of Babel … to understand what people can do when they are united, consider they planned to reach even the heavens with their industry …and all God had to do was to scatter them by giving them different tongues.
Nehemiah rightly identifies why God scatters … it is a direct consequence of transgression. This is a violation of the laws of God. Does God still have laws ? Are there things that are still illegal to Him? We are in an era of “anything goes” …. we believe if we can get away with it, and it feels right to us …and we can convince others it is right … then it must be right. We no more check with the word of God or we have rewritten the word of God to make it more “user-friendly” …. are we surprised that we are scattered … homes are scattered …churches are scattered. We can be abroad but not scattered if we are united in God. It is not every growth and expansion that is positive. As you grow your business, focus first on setting godly shared values. Let your principles of buying and selling be understood and well set. Ensure there are ethical standards that you will not deviate from … then you can expand and grow knowing you will not be scattered. I read of many companies in emerging markets engaged in bribery while their home office in the West maintain highest standards. Go abroad as pilgrims and ambassadors … and not as scattered dealers. I pray someone’s business begins to expand to other nations … represented in many continents. But not in a scattered fashion. But planned and directed by vision and values.

Success comes more from masterful stewardship than from creative insight. Are you a steward?

Dealings with God
Nehemiah 1:7 We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.
What can we say of our dealings with God? We know our dealings with God from our dealing with each other. When we make gains corruptly our dealings with God are corrupt … for we say …this is the will of God. We use God to rubber-stamp our evils …. and on Sunday we give tithes of the fruits of our evil dealings. How can we sweep all these under the carpet and expect God to walk with us? When we hear a nation is corrupt, it means the people deal corruptly with God …for it is our dealings with God that reflect in our other actions. Do we truly know and care for the commandments of God or do we say these are now passed. How about His judgments … do we fear them?
Alas, most do not care any more … we simply do as we please expecting God to be merciful. Nehemiah repents on behalf of the people and on behalf of the nation for corrupt dealings with God. It is not that people do not go to God …but they do so with intent on corruption …even raising holy hands with hearts set on disobedience. Nehemiah knows that these are foundational matters that must first be dealt with. Examine your dealings with God … do you see the corruptions and evil presumptions. Do you see the falsehood in your worship and the corruption in your best thoughts? If not, ask God to reveal them to you. David cried to God to be tried … so he will not deceive himself in approaching his God. May God forgive us.
Psalm 139:23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting
Do not begin with presumption and on a corrupt footing or you will be building on sand.

I have Sinned
Nehemiah 1:6 Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have sinned.
Confession of sin is now a rare activity … the sin of others, the sin of our father’s house and our sin. We use different names these days for sin. We call it indiscretion, excess, mistake, error, misunderstanding, exaggeration, ignorance, folly …anything but sin will do. We are not asked to confess excess or error … but sin.
1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
“If” suggests there is a condition that proves and gives evidence to our reality. If we say we have no sin …the truth, Christ – is not in us. If we confess our (plural) sin …not just personal sin, but grieve for sins that touch us based on relationships, God will show faithfulness and justice in forgiving us. God is just to forgive us because someone else had paid in full for our sin … but that justice is triggered by our admission. But if we say it is not our fault and we have not sinned we make God a liar.
In beginning an important project, we need to clear baggage that disallows the presence of God to help, guide and assist us. That baggage is sin. Sin is grievous before God and the wages of sin is death …. but the saints have not been sold to death but to everlasting life. Today is a good day to grieve for your sin and the sin of others, confessing them before God …even the sins of your father’s house. Note God does not ask us to gossip or spread news on the sins of others … God does not ask us to dwell in perpetual guilt and shame but He demands a confession and putting away of sin. This must be done so you can move forward. Sin will paralyze resolve more than lack of opportunity or resources. God will hear you.

The Great and Terrible God
Nehemiah 1:5 And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:
I understand God’s greatness but not why He is called also the terrible God. We do not hear so much of the terror associated with God. God is full of inestimable love and greatness, but He does not want His capability to unleash terror, to be forgotten.
2 Corinthians 5:11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
Paul emphasizes that God terrorizes His enemies who refuse to hearken to Him when their cups are filled and from this we must be moved, in love, to warn that God is also a consuming fire … to warn Ananias and Saphira … to warn the betrayers of faith that there are dire implications. But God also does not fail in His love and grace. He keeps His part of the bargain as detailed in His word … and will show mercy when we need it … if we are truly committed to obey His commandments.
It is important to address our prayers correctly. Many pray to an imagined God of their own invention … a God that will wink at sin is not the God of Israel. A God who is hateful and unforgiving is not the most high God. The Bible is full of acts that remind us that God does not countenance nonsense for long. Get this truth right or you will be tempted to use God for your own agenda …like a genie in the lamp, you will imagine you can give Him orders, forgetting that you are only clay in the hands of the terrible potter.
In business, we have many lofty aspirations and visions of what we want to achieve … but first, set the great and terrible God before you …knowing He will not be argued with.
Many become successful and forget He is the great and terrible God … and begin to risk His annoyance. There are businesses we cannot be involved with …there are partnerships that are not for us. If we are not separated from evil doers in commerce we risk falling into the abyss of judgment … just as the company of Korah was judged for a sign.

A Time of Prayers
Nehemiah 1:4 And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven
Great endeavors for God begin with fasting. Christ started His ministry with 40 days and nights of fasting. Do not be in haste to move forward on a business idea or venture without taking time to fast and pray. Nehemiah focuses on the God of heaven after listening to the answers of men. Many pray with no focus on what to pray about …they have not listened to the hurts of the society. Others rush into projects without spending enough time with the God of heaven, not hearing what God has to say.
Today could be a good day to pray. Your research has exposed your heart to so many issues and a variety of matters … you need time with God to sharpen your resolve, to know what to do next. Prayer is best when aligned with a sense of destiny and purpose. Do not fear to start afresh or be intimidated by the negative information you have received. As you spend more time in prayer, you will feel the burdens get lighter and sense the weight of the issues lifting.
Lord teach us to pray … help us to pray … give us an understanding of the great value of setting our hearts to the God of heaven in prayer. The place of incubation of great ideas and innovation is in prayer. If you have not spent enough time with God on a concept, you are not ready to move forward with it.

Gates Burned with Fire
Nehemiah 1:3 And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.
Gates are different from walls in the sense that they are created to enable special access. Access to the inner life of people is more important than access into their homes. Have you considered that the eyes, the ears and the mouth are far more important gates than ornate metal gates. The eye gate controls what comes into our lives through what we see. Indeed we admit far more into our consciousness through vision. We are in an era of 24 by 7 media …but have you considered that media is a great opportunity to correct vision and repair the eye gate. How about sound …What do we listen to? Consider the music of current times … but the most dangerous situation comes from issues with the mouth gate. What are your conscious and unconscious professions?
Psalms 141:3 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.
Proverbs 6:2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
Proverbs 18:7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
A burned gate tells the invader that the entire city is available for destruction. Lips with no doors are like collapsed gates …and the wrong words can invite more troubles than we can handle.
Eph 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Nehemiah was told that the gates of Jerusalem were burnt. Meditate on the report concerning the gates of your communities.
