Movie Review: World War Z
I had not read the best-selling novel by Max Brooks prior to watching the movie, which was probably a good thing. I had heard so many good things about the novel that it was unlikely that the movie would live up to the book. Coming into the movie with a blank slate and hearing mixed reviews, I didn’t set my expectations too high.
This movie was Brad Pitt’s baby. Not only did he star in the movie as Gerry Lane, the lead character in the movie, but he also produced it. At a reported cost of over $200 Million to produce the movie, this is going to have to be a big blockbuster to make up for it. With all of this in the backdrop, did it deliver?
The movie is tense and tightly plotted. The recent trend with these action blockbusters is to make them longer, but World War Z comes in at under two hours. There are no wasted scenes, no introspective brooding, and no pondering about the meaning of life. From the opening scene in my hometown of Philadelphia, it’s go, go, go all the time. This movie features hyper fast zombies, which are infinitely more dangerous than the slow, pondering zombies found in the Walking Dead. Gerry Lane and his family survive the initial onslaught and are taken to an aircraft carrier. A former UN investigator, Jerry is given the task of finding out how the zombie infestation started and figuring out how to stop it. No big deal, right? The movie shits to South Korea, Israel, and Wales as Gerry investigates the zombie plague. It’s not all action, however. The movie is also thoughtful, and lacks the big plot holes typically found with these types of movies. All that said, I give it a thumbs up. Go get your tub of popcorn and go see this movie.
