Debut author CHE GILSON is bringing forth her DOG FIGHT into the Swamp! #newread #BOB
Whether we’re plotters or pantsers (outlines not needed), creating our stories takes us on very memorable journeys. Sometimes we may be part way through before we realize some major aspect of our story is just not working (plot, character, setting). Have you ever hit this sharp, pointy snag and if so, how did you escape? We’re you battered and bruised or a bloody mess?
This usually doesn’t happen to me if I outline! I had to make a conscious decision to start outlining after this happened one too many times. I have a novel which I’m currently editing which completely died in the middle. I had the ending in mind so what I did was skip the entire middle section and write the ending. Only after I was done with that did the middle occur to me. Then I cut and pasted the middle into the book and had to paste in all the ending scenes I wrote in order. It’s not something I recommend!
After that nightmare I finally decided to start outlining again. I found a great little novel development plan another author uses and started using that. I used the development plan for a Middle Grade novel and it went off without a hitch! The middle is where I tend to start failing so the outline helps get the whole arc down.
But some projects have been unsalvageable.
–Yep, I love to say I’m a pantser, but as I keep writing, I find I’m sneaking in outlines on the side. So, perhaps I’m a closet plotter? Hmmm…
What’s the one genre you won’t ever try and why?
Historic fiction. Because I am a lazy, lazy, researcher. I like my history in documentary format and that doesn’t really lend itself to in depth knowledge. I’m also not much of a reader of historic fiction, though I can see the appeal.
–I’m with you on that one, Che. No way do I want to delve into worlds where if I’m off just a little on my history, it’s all over.
Growing up, what was your favorite book, comic, game or movie and did you create a character/player that might resemble you?
OMG. This question! I can’t even… Okay, here goes; I LOVED Star Wars as a kid and I did invent a character to insert into the world. However my “fan” characters tended to be more what I wanted to be, a badass, then resembling myself (who is a wimp). So my fan character for Star Wars was a female Admiral named Admiral Darkstar who had run a fowl of Darth Vader and been kicked out of the Empire. She was a bounty hunter for Jabba the Hutt.
–(handing over a paper bag) It’s okay, I totally understand…
What is some of the best advice you were ever given?
One good bit of advice I received from Cat Rambo in one of her writing classes. The class was short stories and she said “Don’t say no for them”. She was talking about submitting your short stories to magazines, but it really applies to everything. Even if you don’t think your story is perfect or even if you think it’s awful, a lot of writers, like myself, don’t know when we’re actually doing well. So submit that story, or book and let the editor say “no”. Don’t just stick it in a folder, because if no one ever sees it, it’s a guaranteed rejection.
–I like that!
We put Che front and center, and she’s dodging our bullet list like a pro…
Blades, guns, fists or feet?
Fists or swords in books, guns in movies.
Favorite Fairy Tale of all time?
Maybe “The Snow Queen”. I suddenly realize I haven’t read a lot of fairy tales…
–May I suggest starting with the original Brothers Grimm? (wiggles eyebrows)
Three titles and their authors sitting on your nightstand/bookcase/table/floor waiting to be read?
“A Passage To India” by E.M. Forster, “Sakuran” by Mayocco Anno, “Mortal Engines” Philip Reeve
Greatest one liner of all time?
“I can’t promise I’ll try, but I’ll try to try.” -Bart Simpson
–Ahh, the wisdom of The Simpsons, may it wax on eternally…
Sarcastic witticism, Southern sweetness or Geeky disdain?
Sarcastic witticism.
Strangest item currently taking up space in your writing cave?
Probably dolls… I collect Asian ball jointed dolls and they are all over the house! And a ton of art supplies.
Favorite supernatural creature?
Witches. I write about them the most.
Want to learn more about Che…

Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy
Even a wild heart can be broken…
A blonde, a brunette and a monster walk into a bar and all hell breaks loose.
It should have been the start of a bad joke, but days from a full moon Xander Cade, Tracker for the Northwest Motoki Pack, finds nothing funny about confronting an enraged Shifter in a crowded Portland nightclub filled with unsuspecting humans. The resulting carnage frays an already thin veil of secrecy shielding the supernatural Kyn community from public scrutiny, and ensures she can’t escape the one man she’s been determined to avoid…

I Survived RT 2014…#RT2014
Yeah, yeah, another Romantic Times Booklovers recap, but bear with me as I get my feet back under me from the nuthouse of May. Not only did this month (which is fading in the rearview) see me type THE END of Shadow’s Curse (coming Fall 2014), but we had SHADOW’S MOON hit the shelves! Plus, HUNTED BY THE PAST is scheduled to follow along on July 11th, so it’s been a little (okay a-frickin’-lot) crazy. When you’re a newbie author, promo items fall squarely on your shoulders, so I’m trying to wrangle a virtual book tour and post all over the web-a-verse for SHADOW’S MOON, and get a head start on HUNTED’s own twisted promo paths.
Enough of my babbling, on to the actual post–RT2014 in New Orleans, was it what I expected or not?
For those who haven’t been following, this was my first time in NOLA and my first time at a convention the size (think GODZILLA SIZED) of RT. I even did a book signing, first ever again. Yep, a whole world of firsts. Keep in mind, everyone will experience the same thing very differently, and if you’ve noticed some grumbling around the writer social sites about the organization of RT, don’t be surprised.
RT had some great points, the location was awesome. Of course, I’ve never been to the Big Easy before, so I was truly excited about that. Loved the Ghost Tour and the fantastic story telling skills of our guide. Got a love a city where a Liberal Arts major can not only earn a paycheck but have fun doing it. LOVED Cafe du Monde, so long as you hit at 2 am or after the line rivaling the Mississippi disappears. Did a psychic reading–nope not sharing, I want to see if it all comes about or not. Tons of great architecture (sue me, I love buildings). Jackson Square, very cool, the Mississippi-muddy, just like everyone says. People and food–fantastic! Of course, refused to suck the head of animal with beady little eyes. Made him turn away while I devoted his tail.
Regrets–wish I had more time, wanted to do a Swamp tour, Plantation tours, see a little broader views other than the French Quarter. If you have a sensitive nose (I do) be prepared for Bourbon Street. Everyone knows why it’s famous, so I’ll leave it to your imagination on why if your nose is a tad princess-y you should tread carefully.Next time, I’m going as a tourist. There’s so much history and I want it all.
RT Conference–holy moses! I knew it was big, but hadn’t quite expected what I got. The noise level at the convention hotel remained at a deafening dull roar the entire time. I think my ears are still ringing. People, real live humans, were EVERYWHERE! I had to hide in my room for a few times just to breathe before diving back in. Elevators, by the way, don’t like handling over 2600 people in a given 15 minute time slot. However, I did get plenty of aerobic exercise.
Featured authors–I had hoped to touch base with some of my past guests (Faith Hunter, Kevin Hearne, Cynthia Eden, Jennifer Estep) or even some of my fan girl type writers (Charlaine Harris, Jeanine Frost, Kresley Cole, Stephanie Tyler, Nalini Singh) but after watching them being mobbed by fans, I just couldn’t add to it. I think it’s because I’m an introvert, I hate to push myself forward if I think someone already has enough going on. The authors were just unbelievably gracious and positive, I was so impressed and no disappointments there. They were incredibly patient with their fans, truly thrilled to talk to all these readers. However, during the Book Fair (Yep, we’ll hit that big red, topic button in just a minute), I did send my Knight to get a book or two signed. He braved the crowds for me. (Sigh).
Panels–here’s where my expectations and reality began to disagree. I think I had mistakenly considered the fact the conference offered various tracks (Craft, Industry, Reader, Specialty) which meant if I stuck to those tracks where I could get something new out of it, I’d learn a well guarded secret or two. Nope. Don’t get me wrong, the panels were good. Sometimes there were a few at the same time, then it became which one do you really want to go to as a determination factor. There was a speciality course I was really, REALLY looking forward to, then on the first day, I noticed it was no longer showing up anywhere. I checked under chairs and behind walls for a cancelation notice of the course and found–nada. My OCD kicked in, and I was quite bummed. Once I stopped pouting, I picked the other course I had been considering. It went well, but still… Then the panels on craft kept themselves fairly general, with information I’ve heard/read before, with a few personal views thrown in. Those did help reassure me, my writing career was not plunging off the cliff into a whirling vortex of death. The industry panels–whoo baby. Talk about conflicting information. Depending on who was talking, their views on publishing/writing, crap, you’d need a Magic 8 ball to get better answers. My overall take away–the path of publishing is not GPS comparable–forge your own trails using whatever works for you and your stories. I did enjoy the marketing ones, mainly because the speakers were bluntly funny and didn’t hold back. LOVED them.
Big, Red, Hot Topic Button–The Book Fair on Saturday:
Yes, I’ve read various points of view on this. Yep, I was there, in the Indie room with over 200 hundred, very talented authors. Yes, our supposed table space was severely under estimated. Yep, the doors opened late. Yep, the AC failed miserably (you would too–New Orleans, largest book signing EVER((it’s making Guinness World Record)), lots and lots of people). Instead of going over all of it, here’s what happened to me. I was very nervous about this. First ever book signing. No one’s going to know who the hell I am, nor will they want my books, what if I have lipstick on my teeth? What if…what if…
You know what made my entire experience? The other authors. Talk about an awesome community. I sat next to two beautiful women, KT Grant and Katie Graykowski. Those two made my time there fun and a blast. Add in Kendall Grey and yes, I had fun. Kendall had readers who were lining up. So Katie and I did what ever we could to keep them entertained. We helped them laugh, provided free AC (via hand fans) and chocolate. We even encouraged them to check out KT’s sheep. I sold three books, but you know what, I count it as a success because:
1. I got to meet Sunny and Susan in person. These two readers were so AWESOME, they almost made me cry. Their obvious enjoyment of my books just made my day.
2. I made new friends with KT, Katie, Kendall and other writers, readers, bloggers around me. I got to listen to what they’ve done and experienced which in turn, sent home just how big the writer/reader community really is.
3. Writers are funny as hell. And completely fearless!
4. The RT staff (who volunteer) have to be hoarding patience pills, because I’m not sure I could’ve handled the crushing crowds they faced.
Were their downsides to the signing? Yep, there were, but the one I had the biggest concern with was the two plus hour wait in line for readers to pay for their books. Seriously? That’s a bit much. However, I know the RT people are getting tons of feedback and re-evaluating how the set up the check out process next year.
As for the division between “Traditional” and “Indie”, here’s my take: at some point in the near future, every writer will wear both hats at some point, because it circles back to what I mentioned about the industry message: the publishing path is yours to forge, just make sure you use the right tools for you.
With all that being said, will I be back next year in Dallas? Probably not, but only because I can’t afford too many conferences each year and I’ve already made promises to some friends to do the RWA one in San Diego. However, Mighty will be there. She’s pretty persuasive, so I might show, you never know.
Come back next week, because I have a new author to intro! Keep an eye out, I’ll be making rounds in June and July with Shadow’s Moon and Hunted by the Past!

We managed to lure her with the promise of visiting Snarky’s Dragons, then we whipped out our questions…
If you were to hold a dinner party for six, who would you invite and share at least one question you would have for each? Your guests don’t have to be alive and if you really want to make it fun, you can use favorite fictional characters.
I think I’d like to have the cast of FRIENDS over for dinner. And I don’t even have to be at the table. I can just sit on the couch [get it] and watch their shenanigans without the remote. I’ll have Monica prepare the food, Rachel whine about how she and Ross were on a break, Chandler can smoke by an open window, Joey must come wearing everything Chandler owns, and Phoebe has to sing the Smelly Cat. And when they leave, I’d like to dig up E. A. Poe, re-heat the leftovers, look into his mad eyes, and ask, “What the hell happened during the days you went missing?” I’d take notes of course, so I can write a book about it. Then I would thank him and say, “The Raven really isn’t all that good.” But I think I would have to quickly throw him back into his grave so he can roll over in it.
–I do believe you’d get a few extra guests…me, Eerie, Mischievous we promise not to embarrass you. Okay, not too much!
As children we tend to have an idea of what we want to be by the time we’re ten. Before you decided to pursue the artistic dream of being a writer, what did you want to be and why?
I wanted to be an astronaut. I’ve been infatuated by the cosmos ever since I looked up at the night sky and realized that we are no more than a speck of star dust. I wanted to be the first woman in space (missed that one). Still, space travel is on my bucket list, so I’m not allowed to die until I take a trip through the cosmos. Oh, and I would really like to meet an alien. Really.
–You know, we might luck out and find a few aliens down here. I could’ve sworn that guy at the coffee shop was from a totally different planet.
If your character(s) came with a warning label, what would it say?
Jeez, so many come to mind. But this one is definitely true: “She [meaning me the author] can’t control us. We control her!” Yup, no matter how I try to steer my character, they always do what they want to do, say what they want to say, and when I don’t want to let them have it their way, my writing sucks.
–Yeah, those damn characters get so testy when they don’t get their own way. *looking over my shoulder* But you didn’t hear it from me.
What’s some of the funniest/sweetest/strangest things you’ve heard from your readers?
I’m not sure whether one would consider this funny/sweet/strange; however, my readers say countless times that I must be crazy to come up with the stuff I do. Little do they know…I hear voices [insert wicked laughter].
–Just voices? Darling, wait until you start holding entire conversations in public with your “imaginary friends”.
What is some of the best advice you were ever given?
“Just make up some good shit.”
–Hmmm, I detect overtones of Chuck Wendig here…
What is the best advice you can share with others?
“In order to make up some good shit, you must read a lot, and I mean a lot, like a whole pile of shit.”
–Yep, Wendig all the way!
Poor Aneta, we even subjected her to our bullet list. The girl is quick, so don’t miss these…
Blades, guns, fists or feet?
Neither. Quick wit.
–snicker, giggle
Favorite Fairy Tale of all time?
The Mysterious Mandolin by Yours Truly. I’m not bragging. I really, truly love it!
–bragging rights are totally allowed here in the Swamp.
Three titles and their authors sitting on your nightstand/bookcase/table/floor waiting to be read?
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, Beloved by Toni Morrison
Greatest one liner of all time?
Atheists have the best sex.
–Okay, that’s the best one I’ve heard this year!
Sarcastic witticism, Southern sweetness or Geeky disdain?
Sarcastic wisecracks with a pinch of geeky disdain.
Strangest item currently taking up space in your writing cave?
My husband’s fishing poles. WTH!
–I have a hubby that appears in mine sometimes. I ask the same question.
Favorite supernatural creature?
Lucifer, Frankenstein, Grendel, Dracula, Hunchback, Veelas, Witches, Ghosts, Dragons… did I mention I love monsters?
–You’re in good company on this one!
Much love to Aneta for stopping by and bringing THE GUARDIAN with her. You too can bask in her presence, just find her in the following places:

Aneta Cruz was born and raised in the Czech Republic. She spent most of her childhood hiding in the library because her friends called her a liar. In her defense, she was only “telling stories.” There Cruz fell in love with books and vowed to become an author. She’d heard that dreams come true in America, so she packed her suitcase and got on the plane shortly after her twentieth birthday. Since then Cruz has earned a BA in English Literature, MFA in Creative Writing, and published a-Muse-me[a]nt, a Collec-tion of Poetry and Prose, Heartbreak Hotel, The Mysterious Mandolin and took part in the anthology, A Touch of Winter. Brenda Novak’s back w/her On-Line Auction for Diabetes Research! #Diabetes
The Brenda Novak Online Auction for Diabetes Research is the biggest online event for diabetes research in the world. Each year, with the help of generous donors–which include some of the biggest and brightest stars in publishing, like Nora Roberts, Diana Gabaldon, Sylvia Day, Suzanne Brockmann, Lee Child, and Steve Berry–Brenda offers up over 2000 fabulous items, creating a shopper’s paradise. As a cumulative total, she’s raised $2 million.
But the auction is more than your everyday charity gala. It’s a blast to participate in–a real community. They do drawings and give away prizes. One of which is a Nook Glow Light, which I’m proud to have SHADOW’S EDGE join with other great Paranormal titles. (Check it out here)
You can visit this link to register and browse the categories of prizes. Here are the instructions for how to bid.
As if being a mother of five and a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author weren’t enough (upcoming titles include COME HOME TO ME and THE HEART OF CHRISTMAS in her Whiskey Creek series as well as a new thriller, A MATTER OF GRAVE CONCERN), award-winning novelist Brenda Novak is also a true philanthropist.
Wrapping up its 9th year, Novak’s Online Auction for Diabetes Research, benefitting the cure-focused work of the Miami-based Diabetes Research Institute (DiabetesResearch.org) surpassed the $2 million mark. Held each May at BrendaNovak.com, the month-long online auction features personal meetings, lunches and dinners with celebrity authors, world-class getaways and state-of-the-art gizmos and gadgets.
These days, Brenda is contacting the previous years’ donors and looking for new people who might be interested in contributing. For Novak, it’s a labor of love and a concentrated effort to find a cure for her son, who has lived with diabetes since he was five years old. “I remember when this all started how excited we were when we raised $34,000. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought we’d come so far so fast,” says Novak. As in previous years, the 2013 annual auction boasted some incredible and very unique items that are of particular interest to budding authors due in large part to the participation of some of the most prolific writers in the country, who are offering their experience and expertise to help cultivate future talent. The Diabetes Research Institute, a center of excellence at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, is a recognized world leader in cure focused research. Since its inception in the early 1970s, the DRI has made significant contributions to the field of diabetes research, pioneering many of the techniques used in islet transplantation.
The DRI is now building upon these achievements by bridging cell-based therapies with emerging technologies to restore insulin production. For the millions of families already affected by diabetes, the Diabetes Research Institute is the best hope for a cure. For more information, visit DiabetesResearch.org.
Discover why Brenda is so passionate about this cause:
Q: What makes you so passionate about Diabetes?
A: My youngest son was diagnosed with diabetes at 5 years old, that’s when I learned how serious this disease is. After his diagnosis, I spent months racking my brain on how I could combat it.
Q: How did you come up with the idea for your charity?
A: Once my son was diagnosed, and I realized what this could mean for his future, I wanted to get involved, to do anything I could to give him a better chance at a healthy life. But I have four other kids and a busy writing career and wasn’t sure how I’d manage to make time for fund raising, didn’t even know where to start. Then I went to a silent auction at my son’s elementary school. There were some fantastic items that had been donated, but the turn-out was poor and the school didn’t make much money. I started thinking about the difficulty of trying to get a large number of people inside one building all at the same time, and the advantages of doing something on the web became very apparent. I figured I could use the support and traffic I already receive from my fan base to help my son and others like him, and the idea to do an on-line auction was born.
Q: How did it go the first year?
A: My first year was more of a test market to see if it would work. When we raised $34,982, I realized it definitely had potential. The second year, we nearly doubled that amount (at $63,000), and it has continued to grow bigger and bigger every year and, thanks to the generosity of my donors.
Q: How much time does it take to put it on every year?
A: It’s an incredibly time-intensive endeavor, but it’s also very fulfilling. We work on it year round. I started out running it on my own–just one person–and did that for three years. Then I hired a part-time assistant who has become a bigger and bigger part of the behind- the-scenes work as the auction has grown.
Q: How do you keep up with your publishing schedule, be a mom and run your charity?
A: It’s a juggling act! Sometimes I look back and don’t know how all the work got done, but I’ve been very blessed–with a supportive husband, good kids who don’t get into trouble (at least not BIG trouble) and good health. My assistant has been invaluable in helping me keep up.
Q: What makes your auction model work so well?
A: I think it’s the unique items that are offered, as well as the community. At the auction, readers can bid to win unique experiences–like having lunch or dinner with their favorite author, or staying in their favorite author’s guest house, or reading their favorite author’s
book before it’s ever even published. We also offer opportunities to aspiring writers of all genres–and millions of people want to write a book. Some of the most powerful agents and editors in publishing have donated their time to read submissions and give feedback, some with a turn-around time of twenty-four hours! In addition to these unique items, we have everything from trips & stays, to antique jewelry to celebrity items.
Also, the friendships we form, the prizes we give away, and the spirit of fighting back together brings us closer as a community each year. I’m not the only one driving this. We’re all in it together.
Q: Do you believe there is a cure for diabetes in sight?
A: I’m absolutely optimistic. When I went to Florida to tour the Diabetes Research Institute and actually talked with their scientists and learned what they were doing, I felt we were SO close. I got very excited because I could really see a cure coming in my lifetime, which is my goal. This is not a mystery disease. I believe it’s curable, and I believe we’re close.

We have Best Selling @CynthiaEden at the Swamp w/giveaway! #pararom #darkrom #giveaway
Not only did we manage to convince her (with large amounts of chocolate and elusive sightings of werewolves) to come answer a few questions, she even offered to give one lucky commenter their choice of either a PRINT COPY or DIGITAL COPY of ONCE BITTEN, TWICE BURNED. (It’s an awesome read!) All you have to do is leave us a comment with a one word description of the one person you know best…you! Don’t forget your email or we won’t be able to share the wonderfulness of Cynthia’s writing!
In case you’re feeling shy and need a little encouragement, here’s a pretty pic and something to whet your reading taste buds:
ONCE BITTEN, TWICE BURNED
Ryder Duncan keeps his secrets. With a twisted scientist starving him in a 10 x 12 cell, it’s not easy to conceal the abilities that set him apart from other vampires, or his plans for escape. But survival–and revenge–are worth waiting for. Until the so-called doctor tempts his appetites with something special: a woman, with a soft Southern accent and a scent like flowers. Sabine.
Sabine Acadia didn’t volunteer to be dinner. She was kidnapped and tossed into the cage of a monster. A monster with fierce green eyes, a body that speaks of ruthless power–but a touch gentle as a caress. Ryder knows things about her, secrets Sabine needs to learn fast. Because while they might soon escape this prison, she’s fighting an urge to set all her desires free. . .
Ready to meet Cynthia? Hang on tight, here we go…
As children we tend to have an idea of what we want to be by the time we’re ten. Before you decided to pursue the artistic dream of being a writer, what did you want to be and why?
I planned to be a magician—the best magician EVER!!!!!! My mom had to sit through countless magic shows as I tried to perfect my craft. The milk didn’t always disappear into the rolled up newspaper (the way it was supposed to do!) and, instead, we often ended up with a wet floor.
–As long as the rabbit made it out alive, I think you can call it a success!
If you turned your laptop/computer/pen/typewriter (yes, some of still use these!) over to your character(s), how would they describe you?
They would probably say I was obsessive, compulsive, crazy, and given to watching far too many fanfic YouTube videos of ONCE UPON A TIME, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, and CASTLE…
–And what’s wrong with that? Oh! Look, new episode of CASTLE is on…be right back.
Personally, I tend to be a bit on the introverted side so the thought of being in the actual presence of one of my favorite writers makes my heart race, my knees shake and tangles my tongue (yes classic fan girl behavior). Who could reduce you to such a level and how do you imagine your initial meeting?
Jayne Ann Krentz totally reduced me to this behavior. I’ve adored her work for years, and when I had a chance to get her autograph at the last RWA conference, I rambled like a mad woman.
–Okay, so you won’t be too stunned if this tongue tied mess tracks you down at RT then right? Right?
Many writers have that first novel which will never see the light of day. Out of curiosity, do you have one stashed somewhere? Inquiring minds want to know: what was your first attempt at writing and how old were you?
Oh, I definitely have a first novel—actually, I think I have the first five novels stashed some place. I’ve got a truly terrible Harlequin series book that I wrote for their long ago “Yours Truly” line (and when I say this book is horrible—I mean I had NO IDEA WHAT I WAS DOING!). I wrote that book almost 20 years ago, and I will never, ever show it to another person again.
I also wrote a YA book back then—more in the line with RL Stine/Christopher Pike. Kids were getting scared/there was a supernatural baddie after them…oh, good times!!
–Okay, so I have my own horrific YA novel that is never allowed to come into the light, nope, not ever. I refuse.
What is the best advice you can share with others?
Write—and write some more! Never give up on your dreams. If you love writing, then sit in that chair and get your hands on the keyboard. Write when you’re happy. Write when you’re sad. Write when you don’t even think you can pull the words out of your mind. Because the more you write…well, the easier it becomes.
–I’m holding you to that last part. I’m at the end of my fifth book right now and she and I are not getting along. Okay, that may be a tad harsh, she’s fine, the writer, well, that wench needs some help…
And now we pepper her with our fast and furious, bullet list…
Blades, guns, fists or feet?
Fists!
Favorite Fairy Tale of all time?

The Never Ending Story or Series…how long is too long? #serieswriting #writing
So according to my “official” poll about what may entertain you, my astoundingly intelligent readers, you indicated you were okay with writer rants. Strangely enough, I have one for you.
Perhaps it’s not a rant, per se, more a wondering question.
At what point does a series go too long? Is it book 94? 5? 23? Or when the main character has done it all/seen it all/fought it all/been there and back?
I prefer fictional series…yep, in case you couldn’t figure that out from the fact that I tend to write in the same way (Kyn Kronicles, PSY-IV Teams, you get the idea).
I’m going to hit this topic up from two viewpoints, first being as a reader.
Can a series be too long?
Answer 1: Reader Jami
YES! I have read a large number (okay so almost every damn book on my shelf is part of some series) of series, and without a doubt there are a handful that should’ve stopped by now. However, some are still stumbling on, while others tease me with a possible sighting of an end.
So when considering these series I adore, I started counting titles. Here’s my not so brainiac conclusion: If a series goes beyond book 10 on the same story arc (meaning the main problem is still there), then I get emotionally tired of dealing with and walk away. Not to say a series can’t go that long. There are some that do a great job doing so (specifically thinking Nalini Singh’s PSY/CHANGELING series). Yet, there is a difference–the main story problem, changes. It keeps things exciting and new. If your main problem remains the same, man, seriously, therapy might be an option.
Answer 2: Writer Jami
Honestly, I could expand within my world to the nth degree if I wanted. I’ve got some awesome secondary characters whose stories could be well worth pursuing. I have plot twists and story arcs that might end up rivaling As The World Turns, but I don’t think it’s wise or fair to my readers to drag them all through it, so for me, personally (not all writers, I would never dare speak for them), yes, a series can go too long. However, your job as a writer is to make sure that doesn’t happen.
As I’m finishing up the fourth book in the Kyn Kronicles (Shadow’s Curse), I’ve started to realize where a natural end to this particular story arc will fall–book 6. Unless of course there is this huge uprising in the reading world and demands (difficult, heart pounding, and awesome demands) are made, I will probably stop with the Kyn at that point.
Not forever, but for awhile.
I hear the question trembling on your quivering lips now…but, Why?
Because, as much as I love Raine and company, there are other worlds/characters/stories I need to get out before my brain explodes. Unfortunately, that means at my current rate of managing two full length books a year, I need to pace myself accordingly.
Because peeps, I have PLANS, I tell you, PLANS!
(coughing and brushing self off)
So, my question to you all, be you writer or reader or both, at what point do you feel a series goes that one step too far? Come on, I don’t bite (much) and I really am curious as to everyone’s opinion.
(Oh hey, stop by next week because the astoundingly wondering Cynthia Eden is stopping by! *clapping hands* Can Not Wait!)

EXCERPT FROM THE FORBIDDEN LIFE OF ALEX MOORE BY ERIN QUINN
“Have you heard anything out there?” Lilly asked.
Like the hellhounds she couldn’t hear or see.
Alex shook his head. “This storm is bad. I don’t think even hellhounds can track in this.”
She looked relieved. He’d always heard that hellhounds were made for the fires of hell, not the bitter cold of winter, but he doubted she’d feel reassured by the information. They’d held their own yesterday and it had been damn cold then. It made him wonder what other false information he’d been given.
Lilly stretched, an uninhibited movement that made Alex’s muscles tighten. Her back arched and her toes pointed. She looked so sleepy and soft that he could almost imagine the scent of her and he yearned to know her taste.
She was staring at him now, her mouth slightly open. Her beautiful eyes, wide.
She’d heard his thoughts.
The desire to act on them nearly pulled him across the room but the toy dog at his feet yipped, reminding Alex that he was waiting. Lilly stood and crossed to the door. She wore soft, clingy pants that accented her shape and a big t-shirt with a wide neck that gaped at her shoulder and hugged her breasts.
“Porch,” she said in a stern voice. Five dogs gave her the okay and she let them out.
Alex came to stand behind her as she waited in front of the open door, her body warm against the cold blast that chased inside. He felt her stiffen and yield in the same compelling moment. She wanted to lean back; she thought she should move away. Before she could overthink it, Alex stepped closer until he was touching her, chest to shoulder blades, hips a whisper from her round behind.
The dogs had raced down the stairs to take care of their business within a foot of the porch. In seconds they were back in the house. Each one of them shook a shower of snow at him as they passed.
Lilly swung the door shut, but she didn’t move away. Neither did he.
“They listened,” she said, her voice filled with breath and nervousness. “Usually they don’t. Not like they did when Amy talked to them.”
“Oh.” Because she seemed to be waiting for a response.
It was hard to think with her so close. Her hair smelled of apples and looked too soft not to touch. He moved his fingers through it, gently letting the tips scrape her scalp before he pushed it aside, baring the curve of her shoulder where the round neck of her shirt was loose. He felt her catch her breath.
“The storm hasn’t let up at all,” she said.
In case he hadn’t noticed, hadn’t considered that he might be stranded here for days. With her.
He lowered his head and she tilted hers to the side, giving him access to the graceful slope of her neck. He let his breath caress the satiny skin, afraid if he did more, he wouldn’t be able to stop. He should back away, but he couldn’t seem to do it.
“Maybe they won’t be able to find us,” she said.
The words held a wistfulness that wrapped around his senses. Maybe they wouldn’t be found. An idea so intoxicating and forbidden that it made him close his eyes and ground himself in reality.
“They’ll find me. But I’ll be long gone from here when they do.”
She spun to face him. The top of her head came to his chin. He wanted to tuck her into the curve of his body and shield her from anything that meant her harm. But that wouldn’t work when it was Alex’s presence that placed her in harm’s way to start with. She stared at him, confusion sharing space with something that might be anger.
At him? At the situation? At herself?
“You’re not here to protect us, are you, Alex?” she asked, her voice husky. “Humans, I mean.”
“Did you really think I was?”
