Zack Jackson & The Hives of Valtra

Zack Jackson Arc

I have finished the first draft of book three in the Zack Jackson series, Zack Jackson & The Hives of Valtra. Unfortunately, due to holiday madness, editing won’t start until after the holidays. Once I get a second draft, I’ll be looking for Beta Readers. There are a few heavy issues the characters have to deal with, and I want to make sure I deal with them in a serious, respectful fashion. I want to do it right.

While it lingers waiting for my editor’s time to free up, I am going to try to get a good start on the next World of Calliome novel. Scars of the Sundering petered out this year. I knew what I wanted to write, I knew where I wanted the story to go, but I just didn’t believe in certain characters’ motivations. As the year dragged on, I started to suspect the problem was the number of human characters in the story. I think part of the strength of my World of Calliome novels is the non-human characters (not to mention a certain lampshading of traditional fantasy novels with human protagonists). Wish me luck as I go back to the well, and start this next story back in Drak-Anor*.

*Having said that, any book that I might write will NOT be part of The Foundation of Drak-Anor series. It may follow the events of those novels, but will not be a direct sequel, per se. One will not need to have read Wings of Twilight or Iron First of the Oroqs to enjoy future novels in the World of Calliome.

Zack Jackson & The Hives of Valtra

Zack Jackson Arc

Work has begun in earnest on the third book in the Zack Jackson series: Zack Jackson & The Hives of Valtra. I anticipate releasing this book in late Q1 or early Q2 2014. In this installment, Zack and his Junior Ranger troop take a trip to the Valtraxian homeworld, Valtra. While there, Zack will have to learn important lessons dealing with the up and downs of friendship and how important those ties are when things are at their worst. That description makes it sound like a “Very Special Episode,” doesn’t it? We’ll have to see how it turns out when I’m finished! :D

Sadly, this means work on my next World of Calliome novel (Scars of the Sundering) has stopped. Frankly, I was having a difficult time with this novel. I just couldn’t get into the characters the way I needed to; I wasn’t believing in the story. I thought it was best to step away and work on something else. Hopefully I’ll find my muse for it again.

In the meantime, I will be having a book signing at the Half-Price Books Outlet in Bloomington, IN this Saturday (November 16). If you’re in the area, stop by and say “Hi!” I’ll have copies of all of my novels for sale.

On a Podcast

So, in all the excitement I forgot to mention that Underdiscussion: The Undergopher Podcast interviewed me at Gen Con. You can listen to the episode here: http://undergopher.com/blog1/2013/08/16/ud128-gencon-hans-cummings-interview-and-day-1/

Actually, I think there are TWO interviews with me in that episode. One deals with me as an author, and the other with my position as ENnie Award Submissions Coordinator.

There will be another podcast coming up, Genretainment on SciFi Pulse Radio. I don’t have an exact date yet, but I will link to it when it goes live. That one will be very interesting to listen to, because I’m fairly certain I not only put my foot in my mouth regarding one of my favorite characters, but I chewed it to a bloody pulp in the process. I was so embarrassed, and I don’t think it’ll get edited out.

In other news, I’m still scheduled for a book signing at the Half-Price Books Outlet in Bloomington, IN in the afternoon of Saturday, November 16th. Come on down and see me!

Zack Jackson & Cytherean Academy now available for Nook, iPad, etc.

TZack Jackson 2 Kindle Cover Small professionalhe exclusivity period I had with Amazon on Zack Jackson & The Cytherean Academy has ended. Effective immediately, you can purchase it at DriveThruFiction where you’ll be able to download PDF, .epub, or .mobi versions of the book for your e-reader or tablet. You can also purchase my books at the Kobo Bookstore. I’ve uploaded the files for Zack Jackson & The Cytherean Academy, so they should show up there in a few days.

I hope to have an announcement soon about a short story of mine appearing in an anthology. The story is titled “Forgotten Dreams” and it’s a space fantasy set in the Seven Galaxies, a new setting I’ve been developing. It will be a few years before the first novel in the Seven Galaxies appears, though, so “Forgotten Dreams” will offer a tantalizing first look.

Gen Con Wrap-up – An Author’s Perspective

If you’re looking for a gamer’s perspective, see here.

While I am only semi-recovered from Gen Con, I think I can be coherent enough to tell you all about it. Let me get something out of the way first. This is my reaction to the amount of books I sold while sitting at my little table on Author’s Avenue in the Dealer Hall:

So yeah, it was a successful con for me. I met with a lot of new readers and sold books to both people I knew and complete strangers. I truly hope everyone who bought one of my books enjoys it. I made some contacts with people who might try to get the Zack Jackson series in elementary school science classes (making an effort to use real science in those books is paying off) and I spoke with a representative from the local library system.

I did not sell out of my Gen Con-exclusive limited edition omnibus of The Foundation of Drak-Anor; I sold just over half of them. I’ll hang onto the rest of the until next Gen Con, but I won’t be printing anymore because I stand by my assertion that it was a LIMITED EDITION. I printed 50 copies and 50 copies there shall be.

Now that the convention is over, it’s time to get back to work on my next book. I have a short story called “Forgotten Dreams” that is going to be in an anthology. “Forgotten Dreams” takes place in a new science fantasy setting I call “The Seven Galaxies.” I’ll reveal more when the anthology is officially announced and more things are locked in; we’re all still in the editing & peer review phase of our stories. My next book, as I’ve mentioned in an earlier blog post, is called Scars of the Sundering. It is a fantasy novel taking place on the World of Calliome (which you may remember from Wings of Twilight and Iron Fist of the Oroqs), but we’ve moved further south, to the once-prosperous mining town of Curton. It is now five (five, five plus…still working that out) years beyond the events in Iron Fist of the Oroqs and we’ll see that a magical world like Calliome cannot be sundered and then healed without a few problems occurring in the deep places of the world. You’ll see what’s become of Tasha Galperin, though the novel focuses on a wayward transmuter and enchanter named Vasco Dragonblade from Maritropa and on the Constable of Curton, Knight-Commander of the Royal Order of the Shield, Aveline Durant, a woman whose family immigrated south from the coastal port of Vlorey to settle among the miners and mudders of Curton in a more prosperous time.

I will try to update this blog more often, but despite my success at Gen Con, I still feel like I don’t have a whole lot to say about my craft that isn’t already being said by folks more experienced than me.

Where I will be – Gen Con edition

If you’re going to Gen Con (August 15-18, 2013),  you can find me most of the time in the Dealer Hall at my table on Author’s Avenue. It’s table AA, near the back of the hall across the aisle from Stan! and the Media Guest of Honor Autograph area.

I will have paperback copies of all of my books there, as well as a hardcover Gen Con-exclusive limited edition omnibus of my fantasy series, The Foundation of Drak-Anor. This edition is limited to 50 copies, so you should get it as soon as possible. I will also have CDs with electronic versions of all of my books in three formats (epub, mobi, and PDF).
