Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, originally of Genoa, served as Secretary, and later Prefect, of the Congregation for the Clergy in the Vatican under Pope Benedict XVI, and now serves as Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary under Pope Francis. A Doctor of Canon Law, Cardinal Piacenza has taught at the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy and was created cardinal by Benedict in 2010.
