News! Photos! Updates! Oh my!
Wow, I am SO BEHIND on updating you guys about all the STUFF and THINGS that have turned the last few months / weeks / days (who can tell anymore--it all feels like one big never-ending blur--kind of like this sentence!) into a whirlwind of AIYEE!!!!!!!!
(and warning, there will be a lot of exclamation marks in this post!)
First up: LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is me, at the SIBA Trade show in Naples, Florida last week, signing one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen--FINISHED COPIES OF KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES!!!!!!!!!!!!
I still don't really know how to process it. I had no idea that's what I'd be doing there, and then I got to the signing and they were unpacking all these beautiful, shiny hardcovers and it was like EXCUSE ME WHILE I HAVE A MOMENT HERE, PEOPLE! It's amazing I didn't cry! (and yeah, I totally did later in my hotel room when I got to really page through one)
While I was there I also got to do a super fun panel with Adam-Troy Castro, Ellis Weiner, and Irene Latham:
(Huge thanks to Irene for taking the picture, which I totally stole from her awesome blog)
AND, I got to have one of those, "wow--this two series at once thing is REAL" moments when I had to change badges to say "Shannon Messenger: Let the Sky Fall" and sign these:
*stares at the stack of ARCs, trying not to worry about people hating them...*
I've also been really bad about announcing the events I have coming up, so let's fix that right now! I have two events this weekend that I'm SUPER excited about:
Bridge to BooksSeptember 15th, 10:30amMcKinley School, 325 S. Oak Knoll Ave., Pasadena, CA 91101A middle grade event with Lisa McMann, Margaret Peterson Haddix, and Helen Stringer. Admission is free and books will be available to purchase on site from Once Upon a Time Bookstore. But you will need to register online. Info can be found at bridgetobooks.org.
SCIBA Children's Books and Literacy Brunch
September 16, 10:30 am Hilton San Diego/Del Mar I'm so honored to be a speaker, along with the amazing Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian and Diane Lang. Full event details can be found HERE.
I've also updated my Appearances page, so you can find all the details about all the other things I have coming up HERE.
Another thing I've been TOTALLY remiss about is revealing EXCITING FOREIGN THINGS!
In case you can't read that, the quick sum-up is: Germany, Spain, Italy, and Brazil! I seriously don't know how to wrap my head around the fact that my books are going to be published in languages I can't understand, but I am so honored and humbled and grateful at the warm welcome my characters have gotten. And should I have any more news on that front I promise to keep you guys posted.
Hm... I'm pretty sure that catches you up--and even *I'M* sick of me and all my giddiness by now--so I think that's enough for today.
But I will be revealing something else--something I am SO INSANELY EXCITED ABOUT on Friday so check back for that. And thank you for reading all of this and sharing in my excitement.
In fact I want to take a second to thank all of you for your amazing support and patience with me. I know I've been a bad blogger, and I know I've gotten really bad about replying to comments and emails and lost touch with so many of you. But I promise I'm still here and I'm still reading everything you guys say and I am hoping to get better about some of those things soon because I really miss interacting with you guys. In the meantime, THANK YOU for understanding and supporting me and generally just being there as I try to keep my head straight through all of this crazy chaos. (also: come hang with me on Twitter--that's the one place I'm pretty good about staying current with my replies).
I knew this year was going to be an adventure and I'm trying to keep up with it all as best as I can. But I really appreciate you all sticking by me as I muddle through. I know I'm not doing it all perfectly, but I'm trying my best. And I could not do this without you guys!

Marvelous Middle Grade Monday: The Cavendish Home For Boys and Girls, by Claire LeGrand--plus a giveaway!
Ugh I am soooooooooo jetlagged from my whirlwind trip to Florida (which was SO MUCH FUN, btw and I will tell you about when my brain is working again!) So once again Deb Marshall is covering my MMGM. (THANK YOU DEB!!!) And she's chosen to feature a book that I am DYING to read: THE CAVENDISH HOME FOR BOYS AND GIRLS, by Claire LeGrand
Here's how the publisher describes it:
At the Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls, you will definitely learn your lesson. A dark, timeless, and heartfelt novel for fans of Coraline and The Mysterious Benedict Society.
Victoria hates nonsense. There is no need for it when your life is perfect. The only smudge on her pristine life is her best friend Lawrence. He is a disaster—lazy and dreamy, shirt always untucked, obsessed with his silly piano. Victoria often wonders why she ever bothered being his friend. (Lawrence does too.)
But then Lawrence goes missing. And he’s not the only one. Victoria soon discovers that The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls is not what it appears to be. Kids go in but come out…different. Or they don’t’ come out at all.
If anyone can sort this out, it’s Victoria—even if it means getting a little messy. And like always, here's Deb explain for herself why all of us need to read this one. Take it away Deb!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There’s a cold wind blowing for children who need some fixing. It’s time to stop them going about life, being all messy and disruptive. One would think that Victoria would be all for something like this. She is, after all, the queen of perfection. She loves it. She detests messes and disorder. And she certainly looks down her nose at those who are cast in that vein. Fix up the messes! Down with disorder!
But, when those kids, including her one and only friend, start going missing--she notices. She cares. And that is what I loved most about this book. Although Victoria has all the ingredients of what could be a hugely unlikeable character, the author does a marvelous job of letting you see between the lines and into Victoria’s heart. In other words, I couldn’t help but like her. She adores her friend, Lawrence, whether she shows it or not. It is only what she perceives to be his imperfections sometimes getting the better of her, causing her to say and do things to Lawrence that aren’t best friend actions. But, thanks to the author, you understand Victoria and you give her the benefit of the doubt. She’s a wonderfully complicated character with some seriously big (okay, huge!) flaws and yet you kinda like her even when she’s being her perfectionist, I am the best, I can’t stand mess kid self.
Next to characterization, the atmosphere and tension created is stellar! Both are heightened with the imagery and descriptions filled with swatches of red, mud brown and dark weaving in and out of the pages. And some of the glimpses of evil Victoria begins to feel and notice, especially in the adults, are down right creepy.
A sinister feel of something wicked this way coming for less than perfect children that begins in the opening chapters, unique characters and friendships and the way the author has with words made this a book I couldn’t put down! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yup, I DEFINITELY need to read this one. It is officially next on my list. Thanks so much for the feature, Deb!
In the meantime, I want one of you to have the chance to read it, so I'm giving away a copy to one lucky winner. To enter, make sure you leave a comment on this post by 11:59 pm PST on Saturday September 15th. I'll draw one random winner and post their name on Sunday, September 16th. International entries welcome.

If you would like to join in the MMGM fun, all you have to do is blog about a middle grade book you love (contests, author interviews and whatnot also count--but are most definitely not required) and email me the title of the book you're featuring and a link to your blog at SWMessenger (at) hotmail (dot) com. (Make sure you put MMGM or Marvelous Middle Grade Monday in the subject line so I see it)
NOTE: I used to not have a cut-off time for adding links to the post, but with how insane my schedule is right now, if you don't email me by Sunday evening (usually around 11pm PST is when I put the links together) I can't guarantee I'll have a chance to add you. KEEPER Launch Party Details!
Yes--the time has finally come for me to freak out tell you about some of the exciting things I have planned for the release of KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES. Specifically the terrifying Launch Parties!
And yes--I mean parties plural. I figured, I was already worrying that no one would come to one launch party, so why not double the stress????? :)
No, really, what it came down to is that there's one Indie Book Store that not only holds a very special place in my heart, but is a large part of the reason KEEPER exists. So I couldn't imagine not doing my launch there. BUT, when I started telling SoCal friends and family that the launch would be in Arizona, well... lets just say they were less than happy with me (I'm now very glad I didn't have a destination wedding--it would not have gone over well).
SO, I'm doing TWO launches in TWO different states in ONE action packed week---and then probably collapsing or fleeing to Mexico. Should be good times!
Here are the details for both events:
SoCal Launch Party When: Tuesday, October 2Time: 6:30 pmWhere: Barnes & Noble Oceanside2615 Vista WayOceanside, CA 92054
760-529-0106
Changing Hands Launch Party When: Saturday, October 6Time: 5:00 pmWhere: Changing Hands Bookstore6428 S McClintock DrTempe, AZ 85283
480-730-0205
I really hope some of you guys can come. In fact, I will love you forever. Like, SERIOUSLY. You have no idea how many sleepless nights I've had about this:
SO, if you live in or near any of those areas I am begging hoping you'll decide to make me the happiest person ever (seriously, EVER) and come hang out.
There will be rambling! And nervous giggling! And awkward moments where I can't decide if I should hug or handshake so we do that sort of clumsy half step-dancy thing!
Who DOESN'T want to be there for all of that????????
And since I am not above bribing you because I love you guys, there will also be exclusive swag and prizes! (Some pretty awesome things, if I do say so myself.) I'm also working on getting food and other yummy things. I'm not sure what the stores will allow, but I'll do what I can to have a few treats.
So mark those calendars! I'll update with any additional details as I figure them out and do my best to remind you guys (warning: I will probably be a bit obnoxious about this--I am SO SCARED no one will come). You can also find info on all my upcoming events on my Appearances Page.
Hope to see some of you there!

DONE! (Like, for realz this time!)
I feel like I've written a post like this a billion times already as I've reached my various deadlines for (the still untiled) KEEPER 2--BUT I'VE NEVER DONE IT WITH DANCING SMILEY FACES!!!!!
So see, it's like a whole new experience!
And I brought out the big guns this time because I think I might actually be done this time. Like DONE done (though this is publishing so there will still be copyedits and first pass and proofreader queries and...) Which is especially miraculous because guys, I swear, there were so many points along the way where I thought I would never get here--and not just the frustrated sense of "I am so behind I will never get there." The terrifying OMG-I-do-not-know-if-I-can-make-this-plot-work-AHHHHHHH kind of panic.
It was seriously, seriously bleak. And I have a post percolating on why this book broke my brain--plus a ton of other super exciting things to tell you guys about.
But dude, I am exhausted.
So the dancing happy faces will have to do for today and I promise I will be back tomorrow with something more useful.
Thank you so much for all your support and cheering me on and bearing with me.
You guys = AWESOME!

Marvelous Middle Grade Monday: Wonder, by RJ Palacio (plus a giveaway!)
Still finishing the last revision on KEEPER 2 (I need to be done by tomorrow--AHHH), so my hero, Deb Marshall is covering my MMGM again. (THANK YOU DEB!!!) And she's chosen to feature a book that's been staring at me from my TBR pile for months. WONDER, by R.J. Palacio.
Here's how the publisher describes it:
I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse.
August Pullman was born with a facial deformity that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. WONDER, now a New York Times bestseller, begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These perspectives converge in a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.
In a world where bullying among young people is an epidemic, this is a refreshing new narrative full of heart and hope. R.J. Palacio has called her debut novel “a meditation on kindness” —indeed, every reader will come away with a greater appreciation for the simple courage of friendship. Auggie is a hero to root for, a diamond in the rough who proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.
And just like in previous times, here's Deb explain for herself why all of us need to read this one. Take it away Deb!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I’d been hearing about WONDER by R.J Palacio http://rjpalacio.com for some time before I read it. Saw comments on twitter, saw blog reviews. Readers were loving it, wowing it saying things like:
“We've all heard about VOICE, and WONDER captures the middle school voice perfectly. What's more, there are a number of narrators other than Auggie--from Auggie's sister Via (Olivia), to his friends Summer and Jack. All of the narrative voices are distinct and pitch-perfect for those characters.” Michael of Middle Grade Mafioso
A memorable story of kindness, courage and wonder. Kirkus
"Full of heart, full of truth, Wonder is a book about seeing the beauty that's all around us. I dare you not to fall in love with Auggie Pullman."- Rebecca Stead, Newbery award-winning author of When You Reach Me
Betsy Bird included it in her list of top 100 Children’s Novels
And the lists of praise and starred reviews go on and on.
Well, finally I made it to WONDER in my NetGalley ARC “pile”. You know how sometimes you go into a book with exceptionally high expectations and it can’t possibly meet them? Not the case here. It totally met them and I read the book in a sitting. August Pullman (aka Auggie) is still with me. His personality and spirit is bigger than life. Empowering if you will. Anything is possible even when the impossible is staring you down. That’s what this boy left me with. That and a deeper sense of what it means to be kind. He is also a boy who will resonate with middle school kids because he wants to fit in just like everyone else. He wants his independence, doesn’t wanted to be treated like a kid. He needs friendship as he steps into the more often than not scary tween world where everyone is trying to figure themselves out. And boy oh boy you want those things for him. This book is classic.
Don’t take it just from me and the quoted reviews above, check out the conversations on twitter. What is great is you can hear from teachers, librarians, parents and bloggers who are hearing from kids what they think about #thewonderofwonder
As always, thanks for having me Shannon and Happy MMGM everyone! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I really need to make time to read this book. SOON. Thanks so much for the feature, Deb!
In the meantime, I want one of you to have the chance to read it, so I'm giving away a copy to one lucky winner. To enter, make sure you leave a comment on this post by 11:59 pm PST on Saturday September 8th. I'll draw one random winner and post their name on Sunday, September 9th. International entries welcome.

NOTE: I used to not have a cut-off time for adding links to the post, but with how insane my schedule is right now, if you don't email me by Sunday evening (usually around 11pm PST is when I put the links together) I can't guarantee I'll have a chance to add you. BUT, you are welcome to add your link in the comments on this post so people can find you!
*Please note: these posts are not a reflection of my own opinions on the books featured. Each blogger is responsible for their own MMGM content and I do not pre-screen posts ahead of time, nor do I control what books they choose. I simply assemble the list based on the links that are emailed to me ahead of time

Sooooooooooooo close
I know, I know, I PROMISED I was going to be a better blogger--and I really am going to be!
But... well... my last edits on KEEPER 2 arrived (along with the email I'd been dreading about us needing to name it something better than KEEPER 2 *sighs* *hates titles*) so... my week kinda turned into this....
Only with less sleep.
(like a LOT less)
BUT--I will be finishing this revision this weekend (I will I will I will I will) and hopefully it will be the LAST revision (*crosses fingers and toes*) and then I will have time to blog again.
Which is good because um... I don't know if you know this, but... KEEPER COMES OUT FREAKISHLY SOON!!!!!!!!!!!
Like, barely more than a month soon.
The good news about that is: I have some SUPER EXCITING stuff planned, and awesome things to share, and cool contests and launch parties and things that make you go YAY! (The bad news is, expect a lot more panicky blog posts--it's give and take...)
But for now, I have no choice but to leave you with this rather weak, lolcat filled post and get back to my epic battle against KEEPER 2. I have almost whipped this draft into submission. Just a little bit more to go...
Have a great weekend everyone!

Happy Release Day Celebration!!!! (yes, there's a giveaway!)
I don't know if you guys know this, but there are some SERIOUSLY amazing books hitting store shelves today by some seriously amazing authors. In fact, I really don't know how the universe will not implode from all this awesome:
DEFIANCE, by C.J. Redwine
Within the walls of Baalboden, beneath the shadow of the city's brutal leader, Rachel Adams has a secret. While other girls sew dresses and obey their male Protectors, Rachel knows how to survive in the wilderness and deftly wield a sword. When her father, Jared, fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector, her father's apprentice, Logan—the same boy Rachel declared her love for two years ago, and the same one who handed her heart right back to her. Left with nothing but a fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself. But treason against the Commander carries a heavy price, and what awaits her in the Wasteland could destroy her.
At nineteen, Logan McEntire is many things. Orphan. Outcast. Inventor. As apprentice to the city's top courier, Logan is focused on learning his trade so he can escape the tyranny of Baalboden. But his plan never included being responsible for his mentor's impulsive daughter. Logan is determined to protect her, but when his escape plan goes wrong and Rachel pays the price, he realizes he has more at stake than disappointing Jared.
As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can't be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

EMBERS & ECHOES, by Karsten Knight
Every flame casts a shadow.
Ashline Wilde is about to discover that when you’re the reincarnation of a Polynesian volcano goddess, “new beginnings” are just a myth.
Leaving the fiery ruins of her sophomore year behind her, Ash travels to the sizzling beaches of Miami, hot on the trail of the little sister she’s only seen in visions. But her happy family reunion isn’t all palm trees and paradise. A cult of evil gods-on-earth, known as the Four Seasons, has kidnapped her sister to use in its terrifying new religion. Soon, the streets of Miami erupt in chaos and violence…and Ash gets caught right in the tropical crossfire.
Ash isn’t without help, however. Unexpected romance arrives in the form of Wes, an Aztec god of night with his own vendetta against the Four Seasons. As memories of Ash’s previous life begin to flicker into her dreams, the boundaries between ally and enemy, life and death, and love and hate all bleed together. And when a mysterious trickster from her past reappears to derail her new quest, Ash must choose between the echoes of a once-forgotten yesterday and the embers of an uncertain future.
Because when old flames return from the dead, even a volcano goddess can get burned.

THE CAVENDISH HOME FOR BOYS AND GIRLS,by Claire Legrand

IF I LIE, by Corrine Jackson
A dramatic and powerful novel that explores the gray space between truth and perception.
Cheater. Traitor. Slut.
Quinn’s done the unthinkable: she kissed a guy who is not Carey, her boyfriend. And she got caught. Shunned by everyone she knows, Quinn loses her friends, her reputation, and her identity. Because Carey’s not just any guy—he’s a Marine who’s serving overseas, and beloved by everyone in their small, military town.
But Quinn didn’t cheat. She could clear her name, but that would mean revealing secrets she’s vowed to keep—secrets that aren’t hers to share. So she stays silent, and waits for Carey to come home.
Then Carey goes MIA, and Quinn must decide how far she’ll go to protect her boyfriend…and her promise.
Crazily enough, this is NOT an exhaustive list of all the amazing books launching today. But these are the ones I'm most excited about, because I'm lucky enough to *know* the authors. So I wanted to celebrate their release with a contest.
One lucky winner will win a copy of one of these books--and they'll get to pick whichever one they want. To enter, just leave a comment on this post by 11:59 pm pacific time on Saturday, September 1st (and make sure you tell me which book you'd like to win). I'll draw one random winner and post their name on Sunday, September 2nd. International entries welcome!

Marvelous Middle Grade Monday: Fantastic Links of Awesome (and some Shannon Whining!)
Ugh, I know. I'm *supposed* to be back on track with MMGM. I even had a shiny book all lined up. But then THIS happened:
That, my friends is KEEPER #2--and yes, yes it IS as ridiculously long as it looks. It's the longest book I've ever written--and the hardest, but we'll talk about that another time. For now I'm only showing it to you because well... it's the reason I fail this week. You can't see it, but those pages have the last marks from my editor on them, and the whole thing needs to be read one. more. time. and then hopefully I will finally, FINALLY be done. Well... "done" is a relative term in publishing--but done enough to move on to LET THE SKY FALL 2, which yeah... I still need to write this year. O.O
So needless to say, I have no MMGM. I'm hoping to be back on track next week, but it all depends on how much time these last edits take me. In the meantime, I did at least take time to assemble all the MMGM links, and I hope you have a chance to hop around the blogosphere and check them out. Some awesome middle grade love going on!*
