Disneyland + YA Authors = SO MUCH WIN!!!

Hey guys!

I know I've gone back to being a VERY bad blogger (sigh). I promise, I'm going to TRY to be better. But in the meantime, I wanted to give a quick update about an event I have coming up at the end of March that I'm SUPER excited about.

Yes, that's right. An author event at DISNEYLAND. I mean, do you get anymore awesome than that??? I'm almost afraid it's so much awesome it's going to make the universe implode with awesome overload.

Here's the official event info from the organizers:
What’s better than books? Nothing! But rollercoasters come close. On Saturday, March 30, 2013, sixteen of your favorite young adult authors will put on their mouse ears for THE YAPPIEST DAY ON EARTH, the first (that we know of) YA Day at Disneyland. Bloggers, booksellers, librarians, and fans are invited to come spend the day riding with authors and chatting about current and upcoming releases. The event will culminate with a group signing at the Anabella Hotel, across the street from California Adventure.

To participate, meet the authors inside the gates of Disneyland at 8:00 AM on March 30th. Or, join us at the book signing at 5:30 PM at the Anabella Hotel, 1030 W. Katella Ave. Those too far away to participate may order books to be autographed through Mysterious Galaxy’s website at http://mystgalaxy.com/.

Participating authors include: Elise Allen, Carrie Arcos, Sean Beaudoin, Jennifer Bosworth, Martha Brockenbrough, Cecil Castellucci, Rachel Cohn, Kevin Emerson, Chris Howard, Lish McBride, Gretchen McNeil, Robin Mellom, Shannon Messenger, Cat Patrick, Kasie West, and Gabrielle Zevin.
The day will be tweeted live by participating authors and fans, using the hashtag #YAPPIEST.

The Epic LET THE SKY FALL Pre-Order Giveaway of Amazingness!!!

Holy cow, you guys!

We are one month away from the release of LET THE SKY FALL.

ONE MONTH!!!!
(and not even a full thirty-day-month, since February is a weird short month, but I'm trying not to think about that because it TRIGGERS THE SHANNON PANIC!!!)
(ahem)
ANYWAY, since this is a brand new series in a brand new age category, I wanted to do something a little bit special to celebrate the release and thank anyone who takes a chance on me and my little YA. So I've put together a special Pre-Order Promotion/Giveaway where everyone wins something!!!
Yes, that's right, EVERYONE!!! (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
And I wanted there to be as many prizes as possible, so I'm doing tiers of prizes--ALL of which are open internationally.
Here's the breakdown:
EVERYONE who pre-orders a copy of LET THE SKY FALL and fills out the form below before 11:59pm pacific time on 3/4/13 will win this:

 a signed LTSF bookmark AND a signed LTSF bookplate, (which can also be personalized)
(and pardon my lame photo skills--they're even prettier than this in real life)
Additionally, I will draw TWENTY-FIVE lucky winners (yes, 25!!!) who will ALSO win one of these:

Special LTSF scrabble tile necklaces handmade by me
(again, the picture totally doesn't do them justice--and yes, they include the chain!)
And finally, one especially lucky grand prize winner will ALSO win a $50 amazon or B&N gift card (winner's choice)!!!!!
(I... don't have a picture of that because it's kind of boring to look at)
(BUT ITS FUN TO SHOP WITH!!!!)
Even better? I'm NOT making everyone email me proof of purchase in order to enter. That's WAY too much work for everyone. So the ONLY person who will have to email me proof of purchase will be the grand prize winner (who will have 7 days to send it to me after I notify them that they're the winner.) Everything else will be on the honor system. But PLEASE don't cheat and fill out the form if you haven't pre-ordered the book. Every time you do that a cupcake fairy loses her sparkle and HOW COULD YOU DEPRIVE THE WORLD OF SPARKLY CUPCAKES????
Also, I know that some of you lovely, lovely people may have already pre-ordered LTSF, and I would certainly never want to punish you for that (in fact, I *kind of* want to hug you). So if that's the case, you are welcome to fill out the form. All pre-orders count!
I ... think that covers everything. But if I missed something feel free to ask away in the comments. And THANK YOU guys for all the awesome support. Methinks it's going to be a crazy month and I am so glad I have you with me.
((BIG SMOOSHY GROUP HUG))
Okay, here's the form. And if for some reason it isn't loading, click HERE. Remember, you HAVE to fill it out if you want to win the prizes (and, yanno, pre-order the book). Don't just leave a blog comment, it won't be counted with the entries!

Marvelous Middle Grade Monday: Geeks, Girls, and Secret Identies, by Mike Jung--plus a giveaway!

Given that I was in two states for two different events this weekend (exhausting, but SO MUCH FUN) and that I'm still on a rather tight deadline, I don't have an MMGM today. BUT, the good news is the ever-awesome  Deb Marshall agreed to cover for me. (As always, THANK YOU DEB!!!) And she's chosen to feature a book that is--no lie--sitting at the TOP of my TBR pile: GEEKS, GIRLS, AND SECRET IDENTITIES, by Mike Jung.

Here's how the publisher describes it:

Can knowing the most superhero trivia in the whole school be considered a superpower?

If so, Vincent Wu is invincible.

If not (and let’s face it, it’s “not”), then Vincent and his pals Max and George don’t get any props for being the leaders (and, well, sole members) of the (unofficial) Captain Stupendous Fan Club.

But what happens when the Captain is hurt in an incident involving BOTH Professor Mayhem and his giant indestructible robot AND (mortifyingly) Polly Winnicott-Lee, the girl Vincent totally has a crush on?

The entire city is in danger, Vincent’s parents and his friends aren’t safe, the art teacher has disappeared, and talking to Polly is REALLY, REALLY AWKWARD.

Only Vincent Wu has what it takes to save the Captain, overcome Professor Mayhem, rally his friends, and figure out what to say to Polly. But will anyone take him seriously? Seriously. Anyone??

And like always, here's Deb explain for herself why all of us need to read this one. Take it away Deb!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I, for one, take Vincent Wu seriously. Why? Because he is one seriously funny and likeable kid. And it doesn't end there. Mike Jung has created a wonderful comic book world complete with superheroes and super hero moments that Vincent lives in. Makes you want to step into the book and live there. This is a book with serious wide reader appeal from boys to girls to kids who may not be fantasy fans but are wanting to read about a kid and his friends just trying to fit in. Then there is the totally cool twist in the story behind Captain Stupendous's secret identidy, his origins and the connections it has to all the characters involved. That is some serious good writing going on right there. No wonder this one was short listed in the Cybils Middle Grade Fantasy. Here's what the first round readers thought of it:

“Geeks, Girls, and Secret Identities takes a light-hearted look at a world where superheroes are real, including humorous touches such as all kids having Stupendous Alerts on their phones. Ultimately, Vincent needs all his allegedly useless knowledge to figure out how to save his family, his town, and the world. This science fiction adventure is a geek’s fantasy written in a way so everyone can enjoy the ride.”

Mr. Jung achieved that great balance of quality writing with unique characters and plot lines that will have a wide appeal. The kind of book you can't wait to share. Thanks to Shannon for letting me share it with all of you!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yup--that's why this book is at the top of my TBR pile--not to mention Mike's one of the nicest (and funniest) guys I've met. I really need to finish up this draft so I can have time to read again!
In the meantime, I want one of you to have the chance to read it, so I'm giving away a copy to one lucky winner. To enter, make sure you leave a comment on this post by 11:59 pm PST on Sunday February 3rd. I'll draw one random winner and post their name on Monday, February 4th. International entries welcome.
Shannon-Events UPDATE!
Sorry it's been another quiet blogging week for me. I'm on another TIGHT deadline for LTSF #2--but I will hopefully be done with that next week or so and then MAYBE things really will get back to normal around here.
In the meantime I have some super-important Shannon Event Updates (well... I guess they're only Super-Important to those of you brave enough to attend a Shannon-Event. But I'm going to pretend you're ALL on the edge of your seats right now)
First--AND MOST IMPORTANTLY--the time and location of the LET THE SKY FALL launch party has CHANGED!!!! (this is why I should always have my publicist arrange things for me, she does such a better job!)
It's now going to be at one of my favorite independent book stores (I'm kind of geeking out about it because I've been to so many awesome events there): Mysterious Galaxy Books!!!
Here's the official deets--FOR REAL THIS TIME, I PROMISE!
 LET THE SKY FALL Launch PartyTuesday, March 5, 7:00 pmMysterious Galaxy Books7051 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., Suite #302 San Diego, CA 92111858-268-4747
I really hope some of you will be able to come. I promise rambling and embarrassing Shannon gestures (which will look super dorky in all of your pictures.) Plus prizes. AND YUMMY THINGS.  So you live in SoCal, please come. And bring your friends. GRAB STRANGERS. ;)
ALSO, for any of you who are writers, here's another event I have coming up that I highly, HIGHLY recommend you consider attending:
Big Sur Children's Writer's WorkshopMarch 1-3Embassy Suites HotelSalinas, CA
This is seriously one of the best Writer's Conferences I've ever been to--and I've been to a LOT of conferences. If you're a writer and you want to improve your craft, THIS is the place to do it. They have a very unique format where you get to round table workshop actual pages from your drafts with agents, editors, and authors. I went in 2011 as an attendee and got some key feedback that made a huge improvement in LTSF and I'm sure is part of why it sold, so I'm SO honored that I'll be on the faculty this year. Yes, it is a tad pricey (though considering the rate includes your room and your meals it's actually one of the more affordable writers' conferences) but it's seriously worth every penny. Registration info is HERE. Faculty details are HERE.
And don't forget, I have some awesome events this weekend--it's not too late to decide to come. Here's the event info:
Young Adult Writing Conference: When: Saturday, January 26th, 8:30am - 3:00pmWhere: Dobson High School1501 W. Guadalupe Rd, Mesa 85202For prices and registration info (plus a list of the full faculty) go HERE.
And one LAST thing to mark your calendars for (yes, I have a LOT of events coming up) is a signing/author panel I'm doing with my awesome agent-brother Chris Howard (ROOTLESS) and the lovely and hilarious Debra Driza (MILA 2.0) at the end of March. Here's the deets:
Wednesday, March 27th, 7:00 pmMysterious Galaxy Books7051 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., Suite #302 San Diego, CA 92111858-268-4747
Come hang out with us, I predict epicness. I mean, Chris has a British accent and Debra has pink in her hair--need I say more???
Okay, that's it for now--though I have some other events in the works and will update as soon as they're confirmed. Hope to see some of you guys there!
Awesome Upcoming Events!
Hey guys!
Sorry for the lack of blogging this week. I'm still struggling to catch up on ALL THE THINGS after the deadline of doom. Plus I had some AMAZING school visits yesterday, and those always take a big chunk of time to prepare for.
ANYWAY, enough making excuses. I just wanted to give a quick update on some seriously awesome events I have coming up in the next couple of weeks, in case you missed them on my Appearances page. If you are in SoCal or Arizona, PLEASE COME!!!
First up: the amazingly epic YAllapalooza, hosted by the ever-awesome Changing Hands. It's one of the coolest events I've ever been to--part writers conference (in the morning) part super-cool author panel/signing (in the evening) and people can pick and choose if they want to do one or both. Here's the deets:
Young Adult Writing Conference: When: Saturday, January 26th, 8:30am - 3:00pmWhere: Dobson High School1501 W. Guadalupe Rd, Mesa 85202For prices and registration info (plus a list of the full faculty) go HERE.
YAllapalooza:When: Saturday, January 26th, 4:00pmWhere: Changing Hands Bookstore6428 S McClintock Dr. Tempe,  Arizona 85283Attending authors: Tom Leveen, Cecil Castelluci, Amy Fellner Dominy, Shannon Messenger, Suzanne Lazear, Janni Lee Simner, Kevin Emerson, Erin Jade Lange, Lisa McMann, Suzanne Young, James A. Owen, C.J. Hill (aka Janette Rallison), Laura Ellen, and Lisa SchroederFor more info, go HERE.
The next day I am doing a SUPER-FUN event back in Los Angeles, so SOCAL PEOPLE MARK THOSE CALENDARS. It's called the Mother-Daughter book party, and it's a special afternoon event for mothers and daughters (grades 3-6) with 7 amazing authors (well... 6, plus a shenanigan causing Shannon Messenger). Here's the details:
When: Sunday, January 27th, 2:00pm - 4:00pmWhere: Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse1010 Foothill Boulevard ~ La Canada, CACost: $5 for a ticket that covers both mother & daughter (and gets you $2 off your first book purchase)Attending authors: Joan Bransfield Graham, Leslie Margolis, Robin Mellom, Shannon Messenger, Lin Oliver, Jenn Reese, and Joyce Lee WongFor more info, email Catherine Linka at: catherinel (at) flintridgebooks (dot) com
And last but not least, I have finally booked the launch party for LET THE SKY FALL!!!!! It's going to be at the same place where I did the launch for KEEPER, and once again there will be prizes and cupcakes and lots of awkward Shannon-rambling. And you all know how much I worry about nobody showing up to these things so please, I am not above begging. MARK THOSE CALENDARS!!!! Here's the details:
When: Tuesday, March 5th, 6:30 pmWhere: Barnes & Noble Oceanside2615 Vista Way Oceanside, CA 92054Who can come: EVERYONE!!!! Seriously, I know some launch parties are more like private events, but this one isn't. It's open to ANYONE. Bring a friend. Drag a total stranger. Doesn't matter to me!
That's all for now. Hope to see some of you guys there!!!!!!!
Marvelous Middle Grade Monday: DEAD CITY, by James Ponti--and a giveaway!
I'm due to go back in the deadline cave any day (alas, alack) but in the meantime I've been taking advantage of having a *little* reading time. So once again, I have an MMGM!! (I... wouldn't get too used to this, though. My reading time is about to go the way of the dinosaurs. But I will do my best to always have links.)
BUT, before I get to that, I um... totally forgot to draw a winner for last week's MMGM giveaway of 33 MINUTES (it's been a bit since I did a giveaway, I guess I'm a bit rusty) SO, since it's better late than never, the winner is...
Heidi Grange!
*tosses confetti*
If that's you, email me at SWMessenger (at) hotmail (dot) com with your mailing address and I will send you your prize.
Okay, now, back to today's awesome feature: DEAD CITY, by James Ponti, another book that was at the top of my middle grade TBR pile.
Here's how the publisher describes it:
The Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins says this paranormal action-adventure “breathes new life into the zombie genre” and has “a terrific twist of an ending.”
Most kids have enough to deal with between school, homework, extracurricular activities, and friends, but Molly Bigelow has something else on her list: hunting zombies. By day, Molly attends MIST—the Metropolitan Institute of Science and Technology—but outside the classroom she’s busy dealing with the undead. Because not only do zombies exist, they’re everywhere, and it’s her job to help police them and keep the peace. Sure, she’d like to be a regular kid, but given that her mother was the most revered (or feared, depending on your perspective) zombie hunter in the history of New York City, “regular” just isn’t possible. Molly’s got some legendary footsteps to follow—and some undeadly consequences if she fails.
I'm not *really* sure I need to add anything else to this feature. I mean, THIS BOOK IS BLURBED BY SUZANNE COLLINS!!! And in case you're wondering, here's the full blurb:
In Dead City, James Ponti cleverly weaves Manhattan history into an action-packed plot to breathe new life into the zombie genre. Brainy, funny, and socially baffled Molly Bigelow makes for an irresistible narrator as she drives the story to a terrific twist of an ending. If I’d had the next installment, I’d have dived right in.—Suzanne Collins, author of THE HUNGER GAMES trilogy
I mean, if THAT doesn't convince you, I don't know what does. BUT, since it makes for a rather lame feature to simply paste in a blurb and leave it at that, I'll TRY to add something useful. So I'll add this: DEAD CITY was one of those rare books that hooked me from the very first page. Pretty much the very first sentence.
A lot of books try to pull that off. But most of the time I feel like I have to sort of, "give a book a chapter or two" before I can really decide if I'm liking it. Not the case with DEAD CITY. I loved Molly's voice from the minute I met her. I love the hilarious chapter titles. I love the world/mythology Ponti created--and that's saying a lot because *whispers* I'm... not necessarily a huge zombie fan.
*ducks*
It's not that I hate zombies. I just tend to find the stories a bit... repetitive. I mean, they're undead. There's not a lot you can do with them besides have them chase down the main character. And yet, Ponti found a way to make that all feel fresh. He has levels of zombies--some even fit to live normal lives among us (it's the level 3s you have to be scared of). And when you add his unique take to the hilarious voice of his main character, well... it's just a combination that's made of win. Just the right amount of tension / action but still totally middle grade appropriate. In MY opinion at least. And I'm giving away a copy, so one lucky winner can read and decide for themselves.
If you would like to enter, leave a comment on this post by 11:59 pm pacific time on Saturday, January 19th. I'll draw one random winner and post their names on Sunday, January 20h (and I'll try to actually remember this time!) International entries welcome!
