And...another MMGM fail

Sorry to do this again, guys. But with this being a holiday weekend I'm hoping I'm not letting too many of you down.
I'm out of town right now because my husband ran the Disneyland 1/2 marathon, yesterday. And my hotel room has me relegated to the Internet on my phone. So building all the links was way too tedious of a job for what little down time I have--especially since I'm trying to steal pockets of writing time whenever I can for KEEPER 3. Oh the joys of deadlines... :)
I promise I'll have links again next week. And to those of you who emailed me---Sorry!!!
Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Bookanista Feature: THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US, by Kasie West

I realized it's been WAY too long since I've done a Bookanista feature, so I thought it was high time I correct that problem. And I've chosen one of my absolute favorite recent reads: THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US, by Kasie West.

Here's how the publisher describes it:
Seventeen-year-old Caymen Meyers studies the rich like her own personal science experiment, and after years of observation she’s pretty sure they’re only good for one thing—spending money on useless stuff, like the porcelain dolls in her mother’s shop.
So when Xander Spence walks into the store to pick up a doll for his grandmother, it only takes one glance for Caymen to figure out he’s oozing rich. Despite his charming ways and that he’s one of the first people who actually gets her, she’s smart enough to know his interest won’t last. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned from her mother’s warnings, it’s that the rich have a short attention span. But Xander keeps coming around, despite her best efforts to scare him off. And much to her dismay, she's beginning to enjoy his company.
She knows her mom can’t find out—she wouldn’t approve. She’d much rather Caymen hang out with the local rocker who hasn’t been raised by money. But just when Xander’s attention and loyalty are about to convince Caymen that being rich isn’t a character flaw, she finds out that money is a much bigger part of their relationship than she’d ever realized. And that Xander’s not the only one she should’ve been worried about.
Any of you who've been reading this blog for a while probably know that Contemp isn't necessarily my favorite genre to read. It's not that I don't *like* it. It's just that I usually have to be in the *mood* for it, largely because a lot of Contemp books can be kind of... sad. Lots of teens with issues that make me need tissues--and that's definitely not a bad thing. But I have to be in the right mindset for it.
Anyway, the reason I'm telling you that is because what I love best about THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US is that it's like that at alll. It's actually one of the funniest, sweetest love stories I've read in a long time. Basically, it's a John Hughes movie (if you don't know what those are--get thee to Netflix and watch Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles--STAT) but without all the 80s hair and weird clothes. And I LOVED it.
 Xander is so charming, and Caymen is so hilarious, and Kasie is seriously the master of the almost-OMG-just-kiss-already!!! It's a fun, swoony read that's so good, I couldn't put it down. And when I was done, I seriously wanted to turn back to page one and read it again (stupid deadlines wouldn't let me). So I highly, HIGHLY recommend you pick up a copy. And while you're at it pick up PIVOT POINT too. Same author, though it's not a Contemp. But it's equally awesome. I'll read pretty much anything Kasie writes.
And... I think that's enough rambling. But seriously, GO GET THIS BOOK.
For more awesome book recommendations, here's what my fellow Bookanistas are talking about:

In which I go into cheerleader mode

Okay--don't go into shock, but I actually have a proper blog post for you guys today!

(well, I hope it's proper. I feel like I'm getting rusty at this whole blogging thing--but THAT is a topic for another day).

I've recently heard a number of people all say the same thing, and I'm betting it's something that some of you might be feeling as well. And it's something that makes me so sad to hear--even though I understand why they might feel it--because it's simply NOT true, and I hate to see anyone get down on themselves when what they're going through is totally normal. So I thought it was high time I clear the cobwebs and dust bunnies off this blog and step into cheerleader mode.

This is probably the point where I should tell you what it is we're even talking about (again, going back to the whole rusty-at-blogging thing...)

(ahem)

So basically, I've had a ton of friends say something along the lines of....

"I feel like a fraud."
And I realize that needs a little context, so let me explain. The people telling me this are all fellow writers. They're active in the blogosphere and writing forums and various social media outlets. They go to writer's conferences and trade shows and author signings. Most importantly, they read, read, read and write, write, write and revise, revise, revise. And they've been doing all of this for years.
Basically, they're checking off every box on the Things You Should Do If You're Trying To Get Published list. And yet, for whatever reason, they haven't sold a book yet. Maybe they're also still looking for an agent.
And because of that--and because they're so active in the writing community--they feel like a fraud. Like there's some ticking clock determining how long they're allowed to be "aspiring" before they must cross over to "published", and any second someone is going to realize they still don't have a book deal and show them to the door.
I remember feeling the same way when I was struggling to get published. I worked with my agent for more than a year before selling a book, and I used to dread the inevitable moment when a fellow writer would ask me, "What do you write?" because then I'd have to tell them I'm not published yet and they'd of course immediately be disappointed in me and not want to talk to me anymore because I was a big old fraud.
But here's the thing: I wasn't a fraud
I was just on my journey to publication--and every single writer's journey is different.
And I know you've probably heard that a billion times before, and that it's not all that comforting when your journey has you knee deep in the muck and mire of rejections, meanwhile tons of people you know are skipping past you to Published Authorville. I know it's frustrating and heartbreaking and how easy it is to worry that you're just not good enough and it's never going to happen and maybe you should just give up. And I remember projecting those feelings on everyone else and assuming they were all thinking: go away little wannabe, you're not one of us
But here's the other thing: No one thinks you're a fraud.
Those of us who are published remember very clearly how hard it is to get published (we all have our own war stories, trust me). And honestly, every day this business is getting tougher and tougher to break into, so those of you working at it right now have it even worse than we did. We also know how much timing and luck can play into getting an agent or a book deal, and that whether you have one is NOT a reflection of your talent. All it means is that you're still on your journey, and we are here to cheer you on as you get there.
I know that doesn't change anything, or make the discouraging part of the publishing journey any easier. But please, PLEASE don't tell yourself that you're a fraud. You are NOT a fraud. The only differences between a published author and an aspiring writer are time and perseverance. Be patient, don't give up, and you WILL get there.
And in the meantime: CUPCAKES!

Happy KEEPER-Paperback-Day--AND AN EXILE ARC (plus swag) GIVEAWAY!!!!!!!!!!

There's a reason I've had "Paperback writer" stuck in my head all week--and not just because it's so darn catchy. (For those who don't know what I'm talking about, educate yourselves HERE)

As of today--I NOW OFFICIALLY AM ONE!!!!!!
(Well, maybe not *technically*--since I believe the actual definition of a "paperback writer" applies to authors whose books come out only in paperback. BUT IT'S CLOSE ENOUGH, OKAY???) :)

Which is my nerdy, roundabout way of saying...

*herald trumpets blast*
KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES IS NOW AVAILABLE IN PAPERBACK!!!!!!!!!!
I realize KEEPER has already been out in the world for about ten months now (wow, where does time go?) so this may feel like old news. But I gotta say, I'm almost more excited about this than I was on the hardcover release day.

Growing up, my family lived on a VERY tight budget. And since I cranked through books like nobody's business, paperbacks were pretty much my lifesaver (paperbacks and libraries. I would've been lost without both). So it makes me VERY happy to finally have a paperback version of KEEPER out there in the world, to make it a little easier on families like mine.

Even better: it only costs $6.99.

Even, EVEN better, they're just as shiny and gorgeous as the hardcovers--same gloss and everything:

Even, EVEN, EVEN better, it has this at the end:

Even, EVEN, EVEN, EVEN better, I'm having a contest to celebrate--and I'm giving away one of these:
plus TWENTY FIVE of these:

There. aren't. Enough. Exclamation marks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To enter, make sure you fill out the form below by 11:59pm PDT on 8/18/13. I won't have time to post winners (or contact the losers) so you'll know you won if the prize shows up in your mailbox--like a fun little surprise!!!! (And I'll let you know once they've been sent so you know to keep an eye out). International entries welcome!

Usually I like to keep my giveaways nice and simple. But since I know there's quite a lot of you hoping to win this ARC, I thought it was only fair to give you guys a few chances to get extra entries, and then it's up to you if you want to bother taking advantage of it.
All the instructions are in the form below (and if you can't access the form for some reason, you can find it HERE). Just fill it out to enter.And.... go!Loading...

MMGM Links--plus updates and things! (8/5/13)

Okay, first---HOW IS IT AUGUST????????

I have no idea where this year has gone, but seriously, can someone slow down time--there are people with deadlines who need a couple of extra months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ahem.

You can probably surmise from the above freakout that I have no MMGM this week. Deadlines + SCBWI LA + leaving for Texas in two days = AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Which reminds me. If you live in Austin, Dallas, or Houston, I hope to see you this week! You can find all the dates/locations for where I'll be HERE.
Also, you may not know this (because I keep forgetting to talk about it) but tomorrow (yes--TOMORROW) is the release of the paperback version of KEEPER (which--btw--has a sneak peek of EXILE inside!!!)--and I have a fun giveaway planned, with LOTS of winners. So make sure you check back. (and um, I messed up the scheduling on this, so if you already saw the contest and then saw it disappear--that's why. It'll be back up tomorrow once it's ready).
ALSO, also, I have a winner to announce! The winner of THE CENTER OF EVERYTHING is:
Melanie Conklin
If that's you, please email me at SWMessenger (at) hotmail (dot) com with your address and I will send you your prize!

Marvelous Middle Grade Monday: THE CENTER OF EVERYTHING, by Linda Urban--plus a giveaway!

I have now officially entered the KEEPER 3 drafting cage (we won't talk about how behind I am) so once again, I wasn't able to put together an MMGM for you. But luckily, the awesome Deb Marshall was willing to cover it for me with a guest post.  And she's chosen to feature THE CENTER OF EVERYTHING, by

Here's how the publisher describes it:
For Ruby Pepperdine, the “center of everything” is on the rooftop of Pepperdine Motors in her donut-obsessed town of Bunning, New Hampshire, stargazing from the circle of her grandmother Gigi’s hug. That’s how everything is supposed to be—until Ruby messes up and things spin out of control. But she has one last hope. It all depends on what happens on Bunning Day, when the entire town will hear Ruby read her winning essay. And it depends on her twelfth birthday wish—unless she messes that up too. Can Ruby’s wish set everything straight in her topsy-turvy world?
And like always, here's Deb explain for herself why all of us need to read this one. Take it away Deb!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~After reading several reviews on Linda Urban’s latest book I decided this was one to buy. Bought it, started reading and immediately started thinking “oh yeah, baby….this is going to be good.” It was, it is and like many I will be reading this one again. It’s also got some Newbery rumblings going on about it. I can see why-the characterization is spot on for the twelve year olds, the plot and theme are woven together beautifully and the author approaches the subject of grief in a powerful and unique way. Unique because the story belongs to Ruby and her grandmother. Unique because of the ripple effect that relationship has on Ruby and her other relationships after grandma dies. How does Ruby cope when her center of everything is not there? I found it heart breaking at times. Watching Ruby try to figure out how to figure everything out when life is moving along so fast. There were times I wanted to reach into the story for her and slow it down so she could have more time to deal. But as the author clearly knows it does not work that way. Life after the death of a loved one does go on and sometimes it really does feel like everything is moving forward to fast. The way this story is told I think kids will get it and they will relate to Ruby and feel for her, especially when her friendships start to fall apart. Some have noted that the plot is a tricky one because of how it moves back and forth in time. It is, but kids will stick with it and follow along because at its centre is Ruby-a completely and utterly real twelve year old who is struggling with the death of her grandmother and trying to keep up with her friends and all the excitement of the approaching Bunning Day Festivities. Plus, there is the wish she has made and desperately wants to come true. Before I leave you to carry on with your MMGM reading and booklist growing, I must mention the really cool history and town and townspeople the author has created! Not a one dimensional anything to be found there. Rich, rich, rich and a whole lot of fun. If you are interested in learning more about this book and its author the following Publishers Weekly interview is well worth taking a look at:

An interview with Linda Urban that is well worth reading: http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/authors/interviews/article/56321-q-a-with-linda-urban.html

Thanks for letting me share the love, Shannon!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Wow--that sounds awesome.  Thanks so much for spotlighting it, Deb!
And like always I'm giving away a copy to one of you guys!  To enter, make sure you leave a comment on this post by 11:59 pm PST on Sunday August 4th. I'll draw one random winner and post their name on Monday, August 5th. International entries welcome.
If you would like to join in the MMGM fun, all you have to do is blog about a middle grade book you love (contests, author interviews and whatnot also count--but are most definitely not required) and email me the title of the book you're featuring and a link to your blog at SWMessenger (at) hotmail (dot) com. (Make sure you put MMGM or Marvelous Middle Grade Monday in the subject line so I see it)
NOTE: I used to not have a cut-off time for adding links to the post, but with how insane my schedule is right now, if you don't email me by Sunday evening (usually around 11pm PST is when I put the links together) I can't guarantee I'll have a chance to add you. BUT, you are welcome to add your link in the comments on this post so people can find you!
*Please note: these posts are not a reflection of my own opinions on the books featured. Each blogger is responsible for their own MMGM content and I do not pre-screen posts ahead of time, nor do I control what books they choose. I simply assemble the list based on the links that are emailed to me ahead of time
