Hidden Talent NESCBWI

There is so much hidden talent and so many dedicated people who work behind the scenes to support the NESCBWI Spring Conference every year. The planning for each conference starts long before the preceding conference usually kicks off (2013 is already in process). So over the next several weeks, I want to introduce them to the dedicated volunteers who make the magic happen.

Kathryn Hulick is a workhorse. While I was wrapping presents and drinking eggnog, Kathryn was working on the upcoming NESCBWI 2012 Spring Conference. While I was baking cookies, Kathryn was sending out faculty contracts. While I was decorating the tree, Kathryn was collecting faculty bios. While I was lighting the menorah and eating latkes, Kathryn was answering conference question emails. Kathryn is amazing and I am just having such a wonderful time working with her.

Shirley Pearson is also a amazing. Her dedication as the conference registrar is very behind the scenes. You don't see her until you arrive at the conference and walk up to the registration table, but she spends months working on the Regonline registration process and event website beforehand. So while I was doing all the holiday things, I mention above, Shirley was doing her NESCBWI Conference magic.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank them both for their dedication to NESCBWI. I've learned so much working with you both. Thanks and much gratitude!

Is there some someone that supports the NESCBWI Conference you think should be recognized for their dedication and work? Let me know. I'd like to thank them.

Kick Me!

Help me make my Kickstarter goal! Time is running out! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/joycejohnson/the-casting-an-ancient-adventure

About The Casting Meet Robyn, a twelve-year–old girl living in 350 A.D. Ireland, who must choose her future path before her coming-of-age ceremony at Samhaim.

In her time, most girls chose the more traditional roles of healing, midwifery or farming. Others less frequently chose to be warriors or go into Brehon law, but none of these choices appeal to her. Instead, Robyn yearns for red-hot crucibles full of molten bronze and the roaring fires of her father's foundry. She seeks the acceptance of the bronze casters, and the traditions of her father.

Unknown to Robyn, making the choice to be a bronze caster is the easy part—becoming a bronze caster will be the greatest challenge of her life. The biggest obstacle is Gilhey, her sister Lianna's betrothed and her father's top student. Gilhey convinces Lianna to turn away from Robyn, causing a rift between the sisters. Without the support of her sister, Robyn struggles to find her place among the other apprentices.

Robyn's life changes forever the day she accidentally sets fire to the foundry, nearly burning it to the ground and causing great injury to her father. Unable to face the consequences, Robyn decides she must leave the community. Before Robyn has the chance to run though, Gilhey has her kidnapped by wandering Roman soldiers.

When Finn, an unexpected ally, comes to Robyn's aid, she finds it within herself to face the challenges ahead and survive the fight for her life. At the end of her journey, Robyn learns to accept herself for who and what she is: a bronze caster at heart, a girl learning her trade, a life just beginning.Reaching This Goal!
To be able to achieve my goal, I need to raise enough money to fund the production, printing, marketing, and distribution of this book, for which I hope—with your help and generosity—to send to press this December.
My fascination with art and ancient technology, my Irish heritage, and the Celtic flavor of this primeval time, led me to the art of lost wax bronze casting, a setting steeped in tradition and beauty.
The finished book, The Casting, will be available in a 5.5" x 8.5" hard cover with full color dust jacket and high quality heavy paper for no bleed through on the illustrated chapter heading pages, and a 5.5"x 8.5 perfect bound soft cover edition will also be available.
A professional editor from the current children's publishing industry is working with me on both the editorial and copy editing of this book. While an experienced cover and book designer has created the professional trade-ready book for this project.

11 Days to Go!

I hope this holiday season is going wonderfully and that all of you are getting everything you desire!

With the big 50 (yes I am) next week and 2011 drawing to an end, I am trying to fund the printing of my first novel, The Casting, through kickstarter.com. I am reaching out to all of you because I believe you all have dreams and aspirations and understand how important it is to reach your goals. I hope you will consider supporting me now.

I have 11 days (expires at 7:00 AM on December 29th) left to raise the remaining funds I need for this project. I hope you will consider pledging $15 to pre-order a soft copy of the book or $25 for a hard cover copy of the book, and help me make my 50th birthday and my 2011 dream come true! I can't wait to get The Casting into your hands!

Please consider sharing your enthusiasm for this project, as will I, and we will hit my funding goal of $5500.00. If you would like to pledge more, there are some wonderful rewards available.

With warm wishes and much gratitude,
Joyce

Co-Directing a Conference

I am so excited to be co-drecting the 2012 NESCBWI "Keeping it Real" Conference. The past eight moths have flown by and now we are truly in the throes of getting it done.

I've traveled to the heart of Springfield, MA twice to tour the Sheraton Monarch Hotel. It is an amazing building. It has a soaring atrium, plenty of comfortable seating for intimate conversations or robust group gatherings between workshops.

The train and bus stations are approximately 4 blocks from the hotel. So get planning! Want to reserve your room now? Go to NESCBWI 2012 Conference, Springfield, MA.

See you in April!

22 Days Until 50!

That's right, I turn 50 in 22 days! Kind of shocking when I think about it. So many thoughts are racing around in the old gray matter but I won't go there now.
What I really want for my birthday, is for my friends and and family to pledge $15 and support my kickstarter Book Project, The Casting . Not matter what happens, this book is debuting on April 1, 2012.
Spending $15 gets you a dedicated and signed softcover copy ($25 gets you a hard cover copy), and some other awesome swag! Please make an old lady happy, and pledge $15 today!
Don't make me beg, it might get ugly.
Please!

Now go have a glass of wine and celebrate with me!
