One of the things that troubles me about American society—about North America, and I include Canada in this, and Western European Christian society, to some extent, but it’s stronger here; it’s stronger here because of America’s particular heritage—there is a great deal of anger on the American Right at the moment. Have I thrashed this one over with you before? Let me just say a little bit about it, because it is troubling...

Book Review: Wednesdays Were Pretty Normal by Michael Kelley
When you first become a parent, you’re blown away by the immensity of the responsibility. Suddenly there’s this little person who you’re responsible for, who depends on you for, well, everything. But after the shock wears off, routines get established, and your kids start sleeping regularly through the night, you settle into a new normal. And it’s a lot of fun.
Until your child is diagnosed withleukemia.
That’s what happened to Michael Kelley and his wife when their son, Joshua, was just two ye...

Some of you may wonder if you are a proud person. Some of you already “know” that you aren’t proud. But there is a way to test yourself and see what you really are.
The simplest test is also the quickest. Find the nearest mirror and stand before it. If you can see your reflection, you are a testing positive for pride. I won’t get into the science behind that test, just trust me on that one.
Beyond that, let me encourage you toask yourself some basic questions.

If you have the reputation of being somewhat critical, “hard edged”, and defensive–it may reveal much more than you realize. Believe it or not, there is a direct and explicit connection between a lack of confidence in God’s unconditional love for you and your tendency to be critical, assertive, and defensive. When you function as if God’s love and acceptance of you depends onyourspiritual achievements, yourobedience, andyourperformance, you develop a...

While the second view, the more intuitive, the more historical view has more to go for it than the politically correct more modern view, I’m afraid they both seriously miss the point. Yes, the wrath of God is revealed against all unrighteousness. Yes, sexual perversity is both a result of God’s wrath and a provocation of God’s wrath. But a more careful look at the story tells us why Sodom was destroyed. It was destroyed not because of the e...

Too Low a Question
“Which of you convinceth Me of sin?” is too low a question. Who can find in all His life a single lack, a single failure to set us a perfect example? In what difficulty of life, in what trial, in what danger or uncertainty, when we turn our eyes to Him, do we fail to find just the example that we need? And if perchance we are, by the grace of God, enabled to walk with Him but a step in the way, how our hearts burn within us with longing to be always with Him,—to be strengthened by the almight...

The Stamp of My Christian Profession
Sincerity must be the stamp of my Christian profession. Though utterly unable to render perfect obedience to the least of the commandments, yet my desire end purpose will have respect unto them all. I shall no more venture to break the least than the greatest of them; much less shall I ever think of attempting to atone for the breach of one by the performance of the rest. They are indeed many commandments; yet-like links in a chain-they form but one law; and I know who has said, “Whoever shal...

My Bible… My Idol?
Periodically, the accusation of “bibliolatry” pops up in a book or a blog, usually as a shot at those who hold to a high view of Scripture. The idea that the Bible is the written Word of God, authoritative and free from error in all it teaches, is an uncomfortable one in an increasingly pluralistic and relativistic culture. It’s too… absolute, so it doesn’t sit right with many people today.
But is it fair to call a high view of Scripture—one that takes Paul’s words in 2 Tim 3:16-17 seriously,...
